This game has come a long way.

First off, a little background. I was in the CLOSED beta for this game for months. Played for a couple months after release, but was driven away by the performance issues, bugs, and lack of upper level content.

I've been keeping an eye on it though. Didn't really like the sounds of some of the revamps that have been made since release, but recently started to miss the game quite a bit.

My schedule has opened up, and I finally have time to game again.....so since the expansion was coming soon, I decided to resub and re-evaluate the game.

The first thing that struck me was the MASSIVE work that's been done in the performance category. It really does run and look a lot better than it used to, which is a major plus in my book.

Overall the game seems to have grown and matured nicely since release. A lot of things have been added, and more importantly, FINISHED.

We'll see if the game can hold my interest for a while....and what problems I discover once the "pleasantly surprised" phase wears off.

But....if you havn't played this game in a long while, like me.....you may want to check it out again. It's come a long way.

LMAO. My experience is the opposite.

For me performance is much worse than it was at launch.

    At launch it worked great.

Now the performance is so horrible that it is not playable. I tried the ROTGS beta (which is going live tomorrow). Totally unplayable. I can't even turn the camera without the game freezing for 10 seconds. The 3D drawing is so slow that it often takes more than 10 seconds to draw the area arround me.

I have tried DX10 and DX9. Lowering the details makes it run better but still not playable enough to be enjoyable. Even the tortage beach is now freezing and stuttering (it is constantly loading from the HD, it looks like it can't read fast enough from the disk).

So for me there seems to be some major issues with this expansion that is supposed to go live tomorrow.

BTW, my system is a 2.8ghz core2duo, nvidia 8800gt (factory overclocked), 4gb ram, win7x64. As I said, at launch this system was working great (was vistax64 instead of win7); DX10 was working fine too last year.

Prob with win 7 maybe?  I have run the game on less and it has worked fine.  A lot less buggy then launch.  Crash issues were pretty small for me at launch also.

     You do know that 2.8ghz core2duo nvidia 8800gt 4gb ram win7x64 is like, a 500$ laptop right?

In todays graphical standards you can't even play WoW full maxed out resolution and details with that.

I'd expect lots and lots of performance issues with a game like AoC, especially in a free beta preview weekend as the population is going to explode for such an event.

I'm betting even with settings turned WAY down 90% of your latency issues were network lag on the servers from all the free trial/weekend players.

Should run fine on that. May need to flushdns on the beta client. You may have a trash IP saved. I told someone to do that in test and it completely fixed their problem.

This is weird because when I first played AOC a couple years ago I couldn't even enter some of the buildings because the fog and smoke would crush my fps down to 5 from 30-40.  Now two years later on a E6600 and a GTX260 I can play the entire game slick as snot in dx9 mode.  It is truly a next gen mmo engine so it's only natural you'd have to severly limit your draw distances, shadows, and particles to get it to run on your system.  This engine still has a long life ahead of it for hardware upgrades and increasing quality.  Just the grass alone is a reason to upgrade, it's far more efficient grass rendering than most any other mmo engine and puts EQ2 grass to shame.

I remember it was working fine last December with win7 when I tried the welcome back.

So I really don't know what happenend, but they definitely have screwed up somewhere.

    Hope they'll fix it.

I agree with OP hands down.  It really has come a long way.  I came back a month ago and have finished off my HoX getting it to level 80, and have gone through Tortage again and played some in mid levels.  I am really stoked about the expansion.  I am actually really excited about the next 3 months of gaming and it's over an MMO.  Holy crap that hasn't happened in a long time.

I also resubbed and found the game ALLOT better so much so i bought the expansion. As far as performance issues,im running the game on a dinosaur on high settings with some thngs turned down.Ill give you my system so you can see it doesnt take crap to run this game anymore.e6400(2.13ghz),8800gt,2gb ddr2.Seriously i run on high just fine around 40 fps in cities and pvp.I used this to help me out with settings, its an AWESOME guide.

I run win7 64bit it runs perfectly fine.  I use the latest Nvidia drivers, xfi drivers, full hard drive defragged, 4 gig mem with ramboost and I run the games sound system in floating point mode which fixed a couple sound glitches I was having in big raids.  It was no big deal it would just make my surround system cut out for a sec every now and then.  I have heard this game is really sensitive to overclocked videocards though since it's so demanding but I haven't experienced any problems.  I run the game at 1920x1200 so my system is definitely getting a work out.

I came back to the game as well and have been enjoying every minute of playing. This is one of the few mmo's that I have heard was worth returning to and it really was/is. I cannot believe how much smoother the game runs, how much faster and more enjoyable the combat is, the more fleshed out midgame, I havent ran into any bugs, etc...

I play the game on high on my Asus G73 in dx10 with no issues with some minor tweeks from a guide similar to the one posted by a poster above me.

My hat is off to the folks at Funcom, they really did a great job polishing this game up.

    Cheers!

The game is a lot better than it was, but the community is the worst i have ever seen, it beats WoW for the #1 spot.

Putting 10 to 15 people on ignore greatly improves the community.

I agree the global chat is littered with juvenile delinquents but they make a special function just for that.. the mute command.  You spend 10 minutes muting all the morons and you will never deal with them again.

In my time back with AoC I have found 2 fantastic guilds and the only reason I switched from the first one was because they played mostly when I was sleeping.  Mostly everyone you meet out playing will be happy to help you on a quest or whatever, most people have muted the same global troublemakers so you won't even notice anything different.

    There fix it for ya...

Bet ya didn't try any of the new video optimizations all over the net for AoC or peruse the official forums for help or use the posts/guides to tweak any of your ini. files, did ya?

Try some modding, and or tweaking before running the game for ten minutes and then moaning about how they screwed it up.

And I hate to break it to you but that is not very good system specs.  However you should be able to run Aoc just fine...

AOC is nearly perfect now and should start to quickly pull subs away from WOW and all other MMO's now with this expansion tommorow. When it comes to content and PVP AOC is hands down above all else.image  AOC runs perfect on my system and has since launch. I wish other companys would take note on how to properly run an MMO and also how to get peak performance in  their games. image

Never did AoC at launch but find the game very nice graphically and quest wise. I do have to ignore a few of the whiny kids in global but once you find a decent guild I just turn off global usually.

My system is not the problem. I am currently playing Darkfall, Aion, Assassin's Creed II, Crysis, Lotro, Risen, Dragon Age, etc... all of them at full settings in 1920x1080 with no problem.

AoC was running fine last year at max settings (including maxed out  settings for picture quality in the nvidia control panel, which puts some more strain on the hardware on top of AoC's own max settings).

But yea I am the problem and I should waste hours in searching the web for how to edit some ini files. Hilarious.

And 10 minutes? I spent almost my entire evening on this crap.

Regarding the AoC forums and the web, I have seen several reports from other players who said that since one of the updates sometime ago the game was running worse than before for them.

As for the live game now, I myself don't know as I have only tried the beta, which is going live tomorrow. So it isn't beta anymore, is it?

Anyway, I was lucky I could try it out, otherwise I would have purchased it and would have been screwed. This once again shows an mmo should never be pruchased with no trial.

Well I don't think AoC is perfect (what game is) but it is moving i the right direction and I think it is the best mmo out there atm.  The team behind really have kicked it up it's arse to get it into shape.  The only real problem with AoC is the lack of attention to PvP content, anyway here's hoping as i feel for the PvP guys.

AoC truely is a great game though. :)

Rise of the godslayer seriously is a great expansion, Awesome Sauce!
