Creepiest game zone you've been in?

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630

For me it was the City of Sanctus Seru in Everquest 1. It doesn't look creepy. In fact it looks bright and clean.

But no one was ever there ....

You go in and you look and look and scatch your head, wondering what the heck this place is. And the longer you are there, the more you have this feeling of "you shouldn't be here." Which in Everquest is a bad thing because when you feel like that, it's usually true.

Not very much is there. Except Lord Seru. Who in his day was a very bad man, and a good reason for feeling uncomfortable.

Anyway, what zone and in what game did you most get the creeps?

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Being the first to zone in to the plane of hate in everquest always made me poop alittle.

Velketors Labyrinth....You have to head upwards to get to the boss, across slick ice, it gave me vertigo everytime.

Funnest and funniest at times was that EQ1 zone with the pumpkin heads that we all used to Train.

Actually the original Nektulos Forest in EQ

For me it's the Gusgen Mines in FFXI... I still jump when a ghost leaps out at me in that place. First time I was there I stopped for a brief moment and a ghost materialised upside down on the ceiling inches in front of the camera... I seriously freaked out after that one, haha.

I think Promyvion deserves a mention for just being weird.

The Old Forest in LotRO did a really good job of capturing the creepiness of that place as well... at least until they nerfed it and made it impossible to get lost. :(

Don't know the name, but that spider (Mereks?) cavern in SWG... An arachnophob's worst nightmare.

not really a zone, but an area. I think being in a cave in Mortal Online was the first time I was ever legit scared in a game that wasn't designed to do so specifically.

But if I had to pick a ZONE, I would say...ummm...crap...the desert area starter zone in AoC...but I would say that's mostly because of me being afraid of other players in a PvP server.

As for creepiest...I don't really know...no areas really seem that creepy to me in games....probably something in WoW....because not many other games have that many creepy areas. Also, I never got that far in games like EQ1 and 2 and SWG

I hate to give it to WoW, but the upside-down sinners area was very creepy.  Probably the darkest I'd seen in game and it made me long for more mature content.

SWG....Dathomir was always a little creepy with the darkness and music.

Definitely has to be olthoi's nest in AC1, it was dark and dripping with acid and slime and you had to open the nests and you never knew when hordes of olthois will face rape you along the corner of the dark corridors. Good times.

Domain of Pain in the Realm of Torment (GW Nightfall)
floors, walls and columns looks like the insides of some foul creature

reminds me too much of the flesh level in System Shock 2

Nice one I actually forgot about GW, yeah I'd have to include this one myself.

I'd have to say EQ1 and trying to get thru Kithacor Forest  for things, swear you'd die before you new what killed you there. lol You'd wasn't sure if to walk slow and dodge, or do a mad run thru it.

Why didn't you include regular games? Never really found any creepy zones in MMOs but in some classic games like Resident Evil 1 the first time playing thru where you go down the long corridor for the first time and there was these windows and it was storming outside you get closer to the door and all of a sudden CRASHHH!!!! the dogs jump thru the windows scared the hell out of me.

Estate of Unrest before revamp in old EQ.

And lots of zones, especially dungeons, in which there were a sense of danger. After EQ, i never felt it in any other mmo.

    Unrest in EQ2 :)

I was going to say this one as well. There's something really unsettling about the fact that the manifestation of this evil within the world... is turning everything into intestines. A demon esophagus is not exactly the most pleasant of places to be hanging out.

I agree with all of these! I think most of the world of FFXI had some "scary" spots, especially any caves or abandoned castles filled with enemies. Man that game made you "feel" in danger.

Same here, I never came across anything as scaring as the olthoi hord nest (OHN) in asherons Call.

I miss that old time feeling.

Lineage 2.. the swamp area near Dark elf starting town.

FF XI.. gusgen mines.. the one in North Gustaberg. I spend once a lot of time wandering this place trying to do some quest. I got lost becouse I didn't have map. perfect scenario for some horror story =P

In some areas in Earth and Beyond, you really felt like you were out in the middle of space just floating around.  At points, the entire 'emptiness' of it all was creepy.  (and no, I am not pocking fun of it's low subscriber base).

EnB is the MMORPG that I wish would make a comeback.   EVE is fun, but it is very much like running a giant spreadsheet at times.  EnB was much more casual and 'light'... and sometimes that is fun.
