Good, maybe gamestop will lose some of there "ill pay $5 less for a used copy" customer base, and will stop being able to just sell the same copy of the game 100x.

E.A odviously don't have enough money. But seriously as the above the poster says, this may bring down the price of second hand games. But that creates a new set of problems.
Yet another reason why EA is evil and must be destroyed. They have no concept of ethics or morals. GameStop is equally to blame. The nature of the console platform lends itself to the buying and selling of used copies. It's perfectly legal and there should be nothing wrong with it, yet EA seems determined to use their partnership with the big retailers to curb this practice. If this were only in regard to PC games I might be a little more understanding, but because consoles are so secure and one must have the disk, I see no reason why access to multiplayer content should not travel with the owner of the disk.
I already do not play console games anymore, and I am swiftly beginning to avoid all EA titles like the plague. Sooner or later practices like this will catch up with them.
That's the way to treat your customers EA! Block them from enjoying the games. When they think about looking for a new purchase they remember being blocked!
Do you people in EA not understand marketing? Image in the marketplace? Amazing! First year business major classes. Perhaps a seminar on basic business theory.
Vote with your money! The only way to get these losers attention is to hit them in the wallet.

lol, the ONLY people this effects are those who constantly buy used games, though have fun hurting legit devs and padding places like gamestops wallets.
May not be the best course of action, but better then being screwed over by cheap "gamers"

I don't play many console games, but I have to ask...what about people who rent games? Same difference as a used game right? My co-worker only rents games occasionally to play with his friends back in his home state. Sounds like this will kill that, and possibly a lot of people from renting games.
"The company's apparently gained the support of retailer GameStop, which has been watching with a close eye efforts on the part of publishers to discourage its thriving used games business.
According to the retailer, encouraging premium content add-ons still benefits GameStop, since it sells PlayStation Network and Microsoft Points cards. It praised EA's Online Pass as "forward-thinking.""

I remember the good old days. where if you bought a game, and it was shit, you could sell it again. or even return it for a refund.
So I will say again: EA: maybe you should focus less on stopping people buying games second hand, and instead focus on why people are selling them in the first place!
Because all I see all of this stuff doing is making it so if people buy a crap game, they are stuck with it. that doesn't bode well for the quality of games in the future...
Are they going to make selling used cars illegal? After all, Toyota doesn't get any share of that. I think its unheard of to be unable to sell something used. Its happened since the dawn of time. Good thing, I almost exclusively play MMOs. I'm glad I don't have to stop buying EA products, since I never started.

I know some rental places get special "rental" copies, so it may not affect the rental copies. If it did, I'm sure Blockbuster would throw a fit.

It's amazing as time rolls on these publishers really don't like anyone benefiting but them when it comes to games, I usually buy a lot of used games I gave a first pass on due to the fact screenshots, and reviews don't do enough justice to determine whether it is actually worth buying to begin with.
More trials and demos of these full games instead of just nickel and diming customers to death would be the first step , even a much better step forward and actually releasing the game with all the content included for a extra 10$ would even be better instead of dropping 10$ here and there like I did for Fallout III for its DLC.
Of course it makes sound sense to the consumer but from the business perspective fleecing consumers is the way they like to do it vulture capitialism I like to call it.
Just wait, they'll start charging monthly fees for non-MMOs... oh wait, Cryptic kinda did it already.
I rarely buy console games so I don't really know how important the market for used games is (not to mention how far away I am from "major" hubs), when I buy them they either are cheap due to price cuts or they are something brand new that is too good to enter the "queue" for what to play next.
I totally understand this change by EA. Why should they spend their money supporting servers if they never see a cent of money from half the people who are using their services. If companies are going to undercut them by selling used games, then they have a right to take action to protect themselves.

That is a veyr bad argument.
You see, when you buy a used car you buy something that may or may not have some issues that are effect of said car being used. The engine will be used up, the breaks, tires... pretty much every part of car will be used, it wont act like new. With games situation is different. You get same bits of of data the previous owner got, they dont disappear or become less-readable by your computer/console.
Used car is more likely to break down or need money investements to bring it up to shape than a used game. Logics, my good sir.
Personally, I think anyone who spends 5 dollars less for a used game vs. a new one is just kinda foolish. I mean, come on, you're already dropping 55 bucks, whats another 5? Only time I buy used is if they're down to about 20 bucks or so, and well, once the sports games hit that price, the new version will be out fairly soon.

I hope so. Otherwise it'll seriously hurt the game rental business and end up doing nothing but costing EA Sports, and all the companies waiting to copy their idea, sales.
hehehe.....this is an example of "Bind On Acquire" economy in the real world
Not only should you be able to sell your old games freely, but you should be able to sell your old MMO gear as well.
See how this works?
With the small difference that you do not own any of the stuff you aquire in MMO. Its still the property fo the company holding the MMO, the gear like everything else there is just a service they provide.
Since I don't keep up one these things, do emulators allow you to play multiplayer? IE it's a used copy that is copied over for the emulator which you had then shared to many people, all allowed to play online till now?
so basicly ebgame style store wont buy those title anymore!its a good deal i think!player will sell them for higher price online and the gamer will buy the licence in the end gamer will gain from this the only loser is ebgame style scam

I agree. It costs EA money to run their servers. Maintenance, electricity, hardware upgrades, and employees are not free. Now assume they build that cost into the price of a new $60 game. They probably cover those server costs as long as each person using their servers pays for a new $60 game. But for heavily traded used games where each second hand owner plays on their servers, it's going to cost them more per user in the long run since they don't get a dime from the second hand owners.
However, I think the $10 or whatever they are going to charge seems a little on the high side. Sounds like they are looking for a way to increase profit rather than just cover their server costs. I suspect $2-$5 would probably cover their expenses (and then some), but who knows for sure.

Time to stop buying used games that are only 4-5 bucks cheaper than New.
My only issue is that sometimes you can't find the game new anymore.
Maybe with this change we will have more new versions of games in store.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP

For those interested, there is another article at http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28482/EA_Sports_Introduces_Online_Pass_For_Premium_Content_Online_Play.php. According to the article, GameStop supports (or at least doesn't openly oppose) this move. From the article:

The hell is EA's problem??
Ubisoft is starting to pull the same bullcrap too really
But EA used to be a decent company now they're just running it into the ground at warp speed over and over and over again.
I feel sorry for ANYONE who works for these Corporate Greedy Pigs!
Shame on GameStop too for supporting retard decisions
