Understandable, but frankly....all the herds of humans there are far creepier. (IMO)

first time i went into gusgen mines to get that stupid magiked skull freaked me out a lil bit, but that was only the beginning. The scariest zone ever was when you zone in deeper into gusgen mine, and you start seeing the ghost children hanging from the ceiling. that part freaked me out so bad, i used a scroll of instant warp out of there and said screw my RSE!

How about the sirens? Man, those make you jump right out of your socks. I still remember the first time I heard one--it went off just as I zoned into Newton Movalpolos. I thought I had tripped some kind of intruder alarm and was expecting a pissed-off Moblin to show up and kill me.

Naturxatu is right; FFXI has a several great haunted zones--Arrapago Reef comes to mind as another one--but Gusgen always tops the list.

I'm still waiting for something like the Shalebridge Cradle from Theif 3 to make its way into an MMO. Hell, even The Ocean House Hotel from VampireTM: Bloodlines. Those two creeped me out pretty good. The Cradle for it's suspense and terror, and the Ocean House for the funhouse "GOTCHA!" type scares. Once that bulb blows at the entrance, it's on!

But this is a topic about MMOs... Well, I guess Duskwood for me, too. It's got the horror aesthetic and all, and the suspense came from knowing there were mobs there that would shred me at the level I was when I first wandered in.

Lots of old zones in EQ (very dated and boring design), Silithus in WoW, Antonica in EQ2

ps/ oh nvm, misread the thread name. Cant remember anything creepy in MMOs, maybe Greystone in Vanguard. In games overal Dead Space' Shimomura beats anything in creepy stuff easily

Thats what I thought when I saw the thread title !

I dimly remember a really creepy level in Vampire: Bloodlines. It was Ocean Hotel.

There was some creepy level in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes too, but I dont recall the name at all.

  • I don't know why exactly but no zones have really given me the creepy feeling since the original eq1, something about the ambiance, death penalty, mobs chasing you to the zone, or it being my first MMO I guess.. but the scariest zones for me would be Kithicor forest I would jump in my seat when I thought I was safe and something attacked me.. Original Unrest .. Lesser Faydark.. befallen..

Definitely the prison tower in Demon's Souls

Everquest absolutely the creepiest zones of all time, due to the environment plus the "dungeon crawl" factor.  If you wiped deep inside one of those areas you knew you were screwed.  Like Nek forest, good luck retrieving your body, well at least until the next sunrise.  Or any of those dungeon areas, the fear of being killed and having to figure out how to retrieve your body always helped make it extra terrifying.

i go for unrest in eq2

I dunno about the Olthoi Horde Nest in Asheron's Call. I learned pretty early in that game how to murder Olthoi by the bushel with my Swordsman, and as long as I kept my back to a corner and my stamina potions and first aid kits held up I was good. (Although that place was not somewhere where I spent a lot of time with my Mage.) But I'll mention another dungeon in AC1 that did put a shiver down my spine. Balzaeron's (sp?) Lair.

Kudos also to the main Alb forest (can't remember the name) in DAOC. Not that it was scary so much, as that it regularly managed to disorient me. Something that I think a good forest should do in MMORPGs.

Though I'm a bit of an oddity when it comes to things like this, meaning, I actually enjoy creepy and scary, and don't get scared by it.

I really liked the zone Duskwood in World of Warcraft, loved that zone back when WoW capped at lvl 60.

Though I will have to say that the most freakingly lovely place ever would be Nektropos Castle in Nektulos Forest zone in Everquest 2. I remember I loved that place, and in the basement you would hear a constant heart beating noise, lovely! =)

I also remember the first time I was in a group and we were questing and you do this thing with the boar head and the boar spawns in the hallway behind you, trapping you so you are forced to engage it, that was great.

The people and the friends that we have lost, and the dreams that have faded, never forget them~

Definately Plane of Fear in EQ around 2000-2001. First attempt, being part of the first wave... that scared the hell out of me. Then came the 5 hour corpse run =/

Ahh the good (?) old days...

Oh yeah man, Nek Castle was really creepy! I had forgotten about that one. So many cool things in t here, Billy always freaked me out in a chucky kind of way.

  • The sewers under Qeynos in EQ. It was so cramped and claustrophobic, and the level of the monsters could jump vastly in just a few steps. One of my first characters was a Necromancer who had to go down to the Shrine of Bertoxxolus to do his starter quests, I almost lost bowel control when I go underground and walk right into a spectre (huge grim reaper looking fellows with giant scythes), only to realize it's friendly to me because I'm evil.

And what are these Goldshire children, I have heard reference to them before?

  • MiffyMiffy Member Posts: 244

I remember in alpha Everquest 2 had a Dragon in Nek Castle but in the final version there was no Dragon :( So that place was a disappointment to me.

Also them Qeynos Catacombs I got lost in there for ages cause there was no map down there and I think I spent like 4 hours trying to find an exit and didn't notice I was going around in circles and always missing one exit lol.
