In the past week, due to the article that had made the front page of MMORPG.com, people decided they really wanted to give the game another shot. Initially people were worried about the population, but by not playing the game when you want to play it, you are contributing to the problem.

However, that being said, in the past week we have seen an even large amount of MMORPG.com people return to the lands of Telon. A guild was created by our leader, Vikin, called "After Hours", he expected no more then 15-20 people to show up, and in just this week we've had over 100 people join and we have several people trialing who are waiting to join. Now, let me emphasize this by explaining that all 100+ people in this guild, are subbed. We have very few alts in the guild, at most 10-15. So I think we are doing incredibly well.

Do I expect to see Vanguard disappear off the face of the earth anytime soon? No I don't. It's a great game, and SOE knows it, thats why they don't put their money there, because they knew early on that it could kill EQ2 (their flagship MMO).

If you are at all interested in giving Vanguard another shot, nows the time man, it's going good.

After Hours is located on the Seradon server, and you're welcome to message Vikin/Splinki/Cyrsi/Aimen/Sovrath to get an invite to the guild. Otherwise if you have yet to sub its /join mmorpg to get into our chat channel. :)

Don't get me wrong. I loved the crafting and diplomacy system, and the classes were fun too.  But playing solo 99.99% of the time wasn't that great.  Lack of people causes more lack of people <.<.  So I would not prefer to pay 14.99 a month for something that I might not enjoy playing solo.

Okay, as I have said in other places on this site, that is not the case at all. I have been grouping with people non-stop since I came back and my guild is now 120+ strong, everyone has been grouping with each other on a normal basis and its been going great!

Even while wandering around Telon, I see people on a constant basis, even in the middle of nowhere.

The problem is Telon is absolutely ginormous, much like Dark Fall, so it feels like there are less people than there really are. I assure you, if you came back right now, you'd wind up being pretty darn surprised.

Give it a trial, you lose nothing except a few gigs on your HD and if it doesn't seem good to you once you trial it, then just uninstall it! :P

The after hours guild is a blend up to level 20 (there are a few higher). Here is the good thing, VG did get Mentoring from EQ2 and also has the brotherhood system (Level while you are not playing so you can keep up with friends and family).

My highest is 14. Though we have various 20s up to 40's that have not had any problems thus far getting things done. One person is in his 30's and he's been getting groups and levels without issue.

If someone were to come back right now, starting over would be no problem, by prime time the Isle is completely packed full, tons of groups going on, and off the Isle there is a lot going on as well.

    Truth-be-told, it's been pretty awesome.

I'm not plugging it for the hell of it. I'm not some fanboy, I just enjoy the game and am happy to see a lot of people returning and enjoying it as well.

After Hours itself, has a variety of people of all different levels, so its not been hard to get things done, and with the addition of the Mentor system, it makes things even easier.

That's certainly interesting because I can give you a story that is completely opposite from what you report, yet both of us play the same game.  Yes, I also try to form my own groups.

Update: Just asked him about it, he said its not "easy" getting them, but they do happen and usually last for hours once he gets one.

It is possible that I was mistaken in levels. We do have tons of people in the guild currently, so I'm willing to recant that statement. But groups have been forming. Lower level groups are definitely forming, I know that one for a fact, because the majority of our players are lower levels (1-20) and they've been discussing it.

SOE saved it. Everyone hates SOE (so do I) but what would've happened if SOE hadn't bought it?

If SOE didn't "save" vanguard it would have died a quiet death and not been subjected to one of the worst mmo releases in history.  If anything Vanguard only stands as a caution to other developers to avoid games of this depth.

    @Original poster

Is vanguard dieing, yes.  The game itself is not dead and you can log in and play right now.  Right now there are a lot of people from the forums here joining up in a guild which gives more people to group up with.  So now is most likely a better time to join if you were thinking about it.  Better chances of getting groups and seeing the parts of the game that can be more difficult to see without groups.

Just know that going in the game is sort of "as is" with no warrenty.  There is still some new content being developed.

As for the game dieing, it most certainly is.  The development team was cut down again and the development plan was gutted as a result.  Server mergers are coming if the team can get the plan in motion, which should be good for the game.  The lead dev has been pulled away from the game to work on EQ2 and other soe projects for months and months at a time.  The last producer left without a replacement or even saying goodbye.   Everything about the game has been trending down for a long time now.

I don't think the game is going to close down anytime soon, but it is a possibility.   I would really worry about it when a new game gets added to the station pass.

If you have never tried the game it is worth it just to download the trial and see some of the games vistas.

Its the only MMO game I have played in the last 5 years that didn't have kids going on about 'my momma' and chuck norris. i think this is where all the 30+ players go to do what we like to do in a sandbox.

its never going to get populated again thats for sure.

like as was said above Sony are still thrashing EQII so they clearly dont care at all. no matter...

I think at the end of the day Vanguard will be always seen as a benchmark on scope and innovation. Both good andbad... in fact, both good and bad.

We just started a guild from mmorpg.com, 123members now, and only a handful of them are alts. Look up after hours if you are interested.

Yeah, groups do form, but not in the sense that they did in EQ or do in EQ2.  I mean, I got into a group the very first day I came back to Vanguard and also the second day, but the second group was me just helping out some level twenties in CoI where I got no XP.

Every other attempt to look for a group or to form my own group has been met with utter silence.

I have a couple of ideas. I would recommend either leveling an alt so that you're in the same lvl range as most of the guild and/or mentoring down and participating with the guild in the lower lvls. If that seems like a chore to you, I have a 35 war and a 50 bmg, and i don't mind mentoring down to group with guildies.

It is a nice active guild we have going and due to what it is like in the LFG world of VG, I suggest re-focusing your efforts on to guild centered activities. The more help lowbies get, the faster they level and you build relationships for future grouping through the guild.

I agree with you - some days finding a group in VG outside of the guild is like pulling teeth. So I decided to follow the advice above and I'm having a blast.

But to each his own, we all have different tastes in gaming. Just as a side note, I actually re-discovered VG because I re-sub'd to the 'successful' EQ2. Over 2 months of regular play, I never could make a group or get invited to one. I actually found soloing in VG more fun and I found grouping has come more often. EQ2 is really only alive at the top end. Just don't switch to EQ2 thinking the groups will flow unless you have a max lvl toon.

I am in After Hours and today I was hav ing trouble doing a quest on the island and  a guild mate ran right over and helped me complete the quest, on the other hand i have asked some questions and was met with silence at times- could be no one knew the answer or the questions was dumb! LOL

A good reason as to why I haven't been on in awhile is that for some reason I'm having to re-download 7 gigs worth of files through the launcher, and I'm just now getting around to that.  Thought about starting up a necro or I could do more mentoring.

The thing about EQ2 is, there are several more servers than VG, but there are only about three or four with decent populations at all level ranges.  The game shows the server load when you pick a server, so there's no reason to pick a lightly populated server thinking it will be easy to find a group.   Off the top of my head, the popular servers were Mistmoore (personal bias there), Nagafen, Antonia Bayle, and Lucan D'Lere.  Some servers had a medium load, and some like the live exchange server were absolutely dead.  Antonia Bayle is probably twice as populated as any other server in the game and is very easy to get a group going.  I transfered over from Mistmoore last summer, and while I was leveling up on MIstmoore after last having played the game six months after launch, I had trouble finding groups.  I had the advantage, however, of  knowing the pre-50 game pretty well and was able to get groups started to the point where I pretty much stayed in a group from 20-70.  At 70, for some reason the groups slow down and don't pick up until around 77 and by 80, it's grouping and group x2 raids all the way.  My problem is I largely hated the level 80 instances and that stupid group x2 raid, so I quit :P

Honestly, if you like grouping EQ2 was the best bet for a group oriented MMORPG until Blizzard developed WoW's dungeon finder and DDO went F2P, so I'm not sure what you did wrong.

Just got back to this game couple of weeks ago.  Played about 6 months back and the game seemed dead, but currently it seems Vanguard is picking up steam.  A lot of people who played the game couple of years ago are now giving it another try and are sticking to it.    Hope to see more people on Xeth server.
