SWG was my 1st MMO and that probably damaged me for life - since every MMO since that I've played has never lived up to what SWG has and here's why:
*Multi planet immense worlds to explore - you can spend hours upon hours just exploring.
*Space - again - plenty of places to explore - multi-player combat (multi-turret) ships with interiors you can decorate and even call home. Asteroid mining with specially outfitted multi-player mining ships with multiple mining laser turrets - bring your friends on a mining party.
*Player housing and cities - any player can start out right away with players housing on day one and can even start their own city with shuttle port, cantina, bank, cloning center etc There are tons and tons of decorations for the interior and new awesome structures and decorations to be acquired from the SWG Card Game loot cards
*Player vehicles - from beast mounts to Speeder Bikes to multi-player vehicles, AT-ST's (Imperial walkers) and all kinds of other "special and rare" vehicles.
*Crafting system like NO OTHER - the crafting in this game is by far the most involved and fun system you'll ever play. Resources are gathered with special mining equipment which are placed at spots located with survey tools and gather materials like minerals...chemicals...organics and gas automatically until the resource runs out. Also - resources spawn periodically and with different stats which affect the quality of the end product. Once a resource has been depleted it will never respawn again - leading to collecting and selling of rare resources which is like a game itself. The player with the best resources can make the highest quality items - no cookie-cutter stuff here!
You can craft vehicles..pets (in incubators) for combat, mounts and even hologram or stuffed decorations, weapons, armor, clothes, stat foods and drink and many other items essential to gameplay.
*It's Star Wars! I mean - that should be a good enough reason to play SWG than any - no elves here!
And - before all of the NGE haters start posting - I've been around SWG since before NGE and yes..I loved the old system but after playing tons of other MMO's and always being let down - I've come back to SWG and here I will stay unless something else comes out to blow it away (and I don't think SWTOR will be it) NGE hate is old - don't give into your hate - it will lead you down the "dark path"
If you're on the fence about SWG or perhaps thinking about returning - come to the Shadowfire server and send me a tell - I'll be happy to help you get started!

wohoo dark path is kool:
grind in 14 days from level 1-90 completely alone rocks. not.
play as jedi and be the same like 202010432598583282 other players rocks. not.
play on dead servers. rocks. not.
/thread
*Same old SWG hate I haven't played since NGE or ever thread
*Servers have been merged and are not dead.
*If you want to "grind" your toon to 90 in 14 days alone - that's your problem
*There are more profs than Jedi
Please tell me which awesome game you're playing right now - I'd really like to know
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
I hate to say some of what the op says is true SWG has many huge planets to explore the only problem is that there really isn't much of interest on any of them once you go there nothing very engaging. Space is fun although at this point it is pretty bland as far as I know it's the exact same as it was at launch of JTL and playing in space alone on SWG reminds me of the shallow gameplay of STO (Cryptic it's horrible when one part of SWG is equivalent to the fun gained from your entire game). Player housing system is mostly awesome I enjoyed it (when I was married in game and could get my wife to decorate for me) unfortunately her hands were in my pocket more than in my furnishings, and the player cities have from my experience always been dead, I even played a trial last year and gave in and subbed for one month because I really wanted to see some people in the player cities and in a month and a half I never saw one person in them. Player vehicles absolutely no bad side from me for this one. Crafting is great accept there is no one to sell to in game I spent half of my trial and one month sub last year crafting practice junk to level up (wasting resources) and wonder how even if I got good it would matter since there is no one to sell to, I'm certain by this point the small community that remains is pretty tight knit and know what they want and who to get it from so if you haven't been playing and crafting since the debacle known as the NGE what good is crafting?
For the record I really don't consider myself an NGE hater because after playing other mmo's after SWG which was my first Iearned how crappy SWG was pre CU/NGE as well, bugs that lasted for the entire life of the game, mostly uninspiring graphics (I hate all SOE graphics just not my cup of tea), and a corporate philosophy that encouraged lying and deceit. I still have a hard time arguing your points in some ways SWG is a game chocked full of stuff but to me it's the equivalent of the road to nowhere there is no end in sight craft all you want, fly for hours, run around all eight planets but that's all there is to it run, fly, craft no payoff at all.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Havent played in some time, wasnt a subsciber when they did the combat changes etc that everyone still is bitter over.
The guild im with still has a chapter in SWG: Fist of the Empire (FoE)
I heard they went with a tab targeting system now. And still only 2 toons per server, and buffs are still manditory for pvp.
Thats a turn off for me. But im a twitch gamer, not a tabber. To each thier own right. Like i said we have guildies that still enjoy the game and the pvp, and we own quite a bit of land there so...
But mind you everyones waiting for TOR so after that i dont expect many to stay with SWG..
Or warhammer 40k online. "Fear Denies Faith!!"
FoE Fist of the Empire
SWG sadly its not the game it used to be, so while im glad that there are still people who can enjoy the game, i know that i can never be one of them, i played the game from beta, and i have played the game several times since the NGE, usually after each of the publishes i've resubbed for a month, just to see if the game improved enough that i might enjoy playing it again.. a vain hope.. i know.. but no matter how often i try to like this game again, the truth is, its just boring now, its too limited, and its too empty, and thats something that i really dont see changing, even reverting the game to its pre-cu configuration probably wouldnt help now, though it certainly couldnt hurt it any more than it already has been.
Here's my rebuttal:
*SWG is what turns players off to SWG, not NGE and not players who have never played - SWG has had 5 years to recover from the NGE...it didn't and it wont. Halo's, Fairy Wings, zombies, pink flying ewoks with purple hearts, npcs that WARP to you at speeds that make Star Trek fans weak in the knees, TCG "loot", continual grinds, bugs, lack of bug fixes, lack of Developer support - SWG only has 2-4 Devs mate, no more. Teesquared is posting Test Center notes...that's like Obama doing his own laundry - THOSE are just a few of the many freaking issues that turn players off to SWG.
*Servers have not been "merged". They CLOSED half of them and need to close AT LEAST another half (the current population is THAT bad with maybe 10-12,000 players max). Sony wont allow players to move to new servers for free, they charge an industry high $50 flipping dollars PER character! Players are cancelling in lieu of paying this ridiculously high fee.
*Grinding a toon in 14 days beats the worthless Legacy Quests ANY day! They're bugged, camped, farmed, BORING as hell, repetitive, identical and utterly worthless to your character's development because everything you do changes as you progress. SoE even offered players insta CL60 in one of their promos last year because too few new players make it past the Legacy quests and they simply don't have the manpower to "fix" them.
*The majority of players play Jedi - I'm pretty sure that was his point. The lunacy of 20+ Jedi being in a cantina in Mos Eisley at a time when Jedi were all but extinct speaks for itself.
*Dragon Age last night. Hate medieval sword and sorcerer crap, but damn...Bioware makes a helluva game. Also, Call of Duty MW2 and Bad Company. I'll install GTA's latest game in the next few days as well.
This thread is asking to be flamed. But oh well.
I was one of those who had SWG preordered, and I had the collector's edition. I loved pre-CU SWG, and I accepted the CU. Once the NGE hit, I tried very hard to like the game and I couldn't. I've been back several times, only to quit a week later and curse at myself for doing so.
SWG churns up so much anger because of the potential this game had. OP, you listed off a slew of reasons why SWG could've been something amazing. Combine that with a near and dear IP in Star Wars, and that's enough to rile up anyone. The SWG of today is still being played, but you need to make sure you join one of two servers (I believe Starsider is the one server that is the most alive and well). For the record, I pulled another "why did I do this?" with SWG a mere week ago. I do have a recent taste of SWG.
Honestly, if SOE would've reverted back to pre-CU a year ago, I firmly believe a massive amount of rabid fans would've poured back in. At this point, SWG is on life support until SWTOR releases. When Smedley comes out and publicly says "yeah, we screwed SWG up," then you know the game took a wrong turn.
SWG offers something for people, and I will never fault SWG for offering so much sandbox to play in. But the game is caught between wanting to compete on the same level as other modern MMOs while battling a very aged UI and quest concept. SWG could've been a great niche game.
Yes SWG offered alot in a single MMO but SOE killed it, end of story.
As for buffs, sheesh if you spend time pvping then you'll see some people with as many as 55 buffs, funny that the CU was originally made to eliminate the need for alot of buffs and so was the NGE in a way.
I see whats going on here. You like a game and list the reasons why you like it. Others come in and insist that the reasons you gave as to why YOU like the game are bad... or some crap. Im glad you like the game. Others will just argue till the end of the earth against you. Also... these are the people that think their s*** dont stink, so I would just take their words as amusing filler till other people come in and offer something constructive.
Any post in support of SWG is flamed to death by the angry SWG veterans...
I agree with you that, even in its current state, it is a more full-featured sandbox MMO than really any other game on the market except EVE. Still, the fury and hatred caused by the NGE will overshadow everything else when it comes to this game.
The fail in this thread strong it is.
SWG was my second MMO as I played Earth and Beyond before it. I have left and played many of the others that have come out since. I am now back enjoying SWG. I have friends that have returned. I have an active guild and I belong to an active pilot association. We make things happen in game and create roleplay events and such for space, ground, whatever. I have never had as much enjoyment in a game as I have in SWG. Some have had pretty graphics, newer systems, etc. but all have ultimately failed to keep me engrossed enough to maintain a subscription. I agree in that SWG still offers me the most of any game out there that has even kindled my interest. It is fun to play!
Hey Grandpappy,
I see from the official forums that you recently returned to SWG, glad to hear that you are enjoying it.
I must say that after about a six month break myself I'm enjoying SWG more than ever, there's just so much to do and I really enjoy the PvP.
This true and the reason for my post here is to inform players that may be thinking of trying SWG and are being put off by all the negative posts on this forum.
The current state of the game is much improved and if you're looking for a game with a lot of depth with both plenty of solo play as well as group content - this is it.
In regards to the comments that the servers are dead - well...this ain't Wow (no game is in regards to population) and most of the players do not congregate in one area (Wow has some main areas like Dalaran and Ironforge where all the players come for training...the auction houses or portals to other areas of the game) so it makes SWG look kind of empty. There's also many new instances like Hoth, Exar Kun, IG-88 and others where many players are. And - there's space as well - so players are spread out all over the vast area of the game.
SWG has tried to bring players to common areas with a previous patch dedicated to factional play (Imperial vs Rebel) where regular daily city invasions take place which award players with faction points and tokens to get some really nice stuff.
I've heard the same tired argument that SWTOR is going to kill SWG - not going to happen. Bioware is an awesome company but SWTOR is not going to have the depth that SWG has. I'm sure it'll have a great story and awesome graphics but it's going to be more like a console game for the PC and will attract (and keep) a different kind of gamer from the kind that likes SWG. This is my opinion based on what I've seen with recent MMO's coming out - most have the depth of a puddle in the Sahara.
If you post negatively here towards SWG - then please list your favorite game for perspective.
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
Hey Badger - nice to see you and thanks! There really is and I'm trying to let people know what's happening now in SWG - it's a much improved game and I'm hoping people reading this will at least give it a try (or try it again)
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
About 3 years ago I wanted to try something in the space genre so it was either EVE or SWG. I went with EVE and have been happy with my choice, however I'll concede it certainly doesn't offer many of the features listed in the OP.
As I've never played SWG before, I'd probably enjoy it but not much free time in my schedule and I'm not a huge fan of how SOE runs their games in general.
But glad to see its alive and kicking, and who knows, if the current crop of new MMO's continues to disappoint I'm might just give this a whirl sometime.

I'm not going to argue the Legacy quest problem but most of the MMO's I've played involve a grind to top level - and some are far worse (Darkfall Online anyone?)
SOE did close servers and we have at least 4 of those severs populations now on Shadowfire - so your statement is not accurate.
*Dragon Age last night. Hate medieval sword and sorcerer crap, but damn...Bioware makes a helluva game. Also, Call of Duty MW2 and Bad Company. I'll install GTA's latest game in the next few days as well.
The above statement explains why you don't like SWG - and there's nothing wrong with that...you just like a different kind of game
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
Please explain why any part of my statement is "not accurate". Just because a few of the players from closed servers play on Shadowfire, does not make me wrong in any way. Every word I typed IS accurate. Please read it again if you thought I was "not accurate".
A" different kind of game"? I take it you mean GOOD ones? I'm a die hard Star Wars fan who owns nearly every released Star Wars game to date - including titles as old as Dark Forces and as current as Force Unleased Ultimate Sith edition and God forgive me, SW Clone Wars from 2009 as well...I'm one of the few who probably actually bought Jar Jar's Journey.
There are more than just a few players from those servers - all of the players from each of those servers were moved to Shadowfire - you think SOE just destroyed those accts when they "closed" the servers?
No - a different kind of game means...a different type of game. The games you listed that you love are FPS twitch games and not complex - just shoot em up besides Dragon Age which is an excellent game - but fantasy crap is correct.
SWG is an old game, but still offers more than any of the games you listed - and just because you say the game is good or bad doesn't make it so - it's just your opinion as is mine.
Jar Jar's Journey :::shudder::: hehe
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
i loved pre cu SWG... sure it was buggy as hell when i started playing and it did not even have viecles. so you had run everywhere you wanted to go. but still i loved it becouse i saw the potential that the game had.
and for a while it was moving into the right dirrection. viecle patch came... so did the city patch you started hearing whispers that somone had actually unlocked the Jedi class. it was a huge world with as it seemed limitless possibilities.
and i actually loved it.
when WOW was comming out alot of players started talking about moving over since SWG was still yes buggy and there was always something missing. I always loved the idea of "whatever" feature but it was never implemented in a way that i really felt worked. so i followed the flock over to wow... played it for a month or so but i hated how linear it was and how i was being forced to do everything. Wow never had the same feeling SWG had... where i did what i felt like when i felt like it.
so i went back to SWG... and after playing Wow i really saw how buggy it was and how basically everything was not working as inteded but still working well enough. (and at this point SWG had become a solo grind quest to unlock Jedi.. which i never really liked) but then the NEG hit and i felt that the only thing that SWG had going for it was killed.. the freedom.. the sandbox feel... and to me the game just felt like a retarded spawn of it former self.
how ever i did try out the NEG couple months ago and it has improved alot and imo actually playes quite nicely. but for me it is too little too late. since i did end up spending alot of time in Vanilla wow since all my game-ing buddies which of where 3 went over to wow... shortly there after around 20 of my previusly none gamer RL friends (some more buddies rather than friends) where playing wow... that made the linear aspect of wow totally okey for me since i was always playing with someone i knew from RL.
but now everytime i go to another mmo i always miss having this little community of RL friends playing the game and i have never been able to bring a single toon higher than the midlevel range in anyother MMO. and i susspect many of you guys have a simelar story.
(sorry getting way to long but had to make this point)
the point being... I have never liked the Linear progression in MMO's and with the current Quest grind that almost every mmo has it is so Hard for me atleast too meet people ingame to level with.. since everyone is always on a diffrent quest or has played more over the last couple days so you cant group with that person anymore. And that really just makes the whole point of an MMO redundant.. since its almost always a single player grind to the end game where you are forced to group in order to continue your progression.
that is why i wont be going back to SWG even tho i have tested it out and it looks enjoyable enough.. i am simply not ready to pay a montly fee for a single player with couple MMO aspects to it
and way too long i know
Sorry for typos... dyslexic and just too damn lazy to proof read every post for 30 min
(yes i am aware of spell check but it does not help that much
Warning...Wall of text coming...
I'm almost as big an SWG Fan as anyone...Almost...I started in Pre-CU, LOVED the CU, and played PLENTY of NGE...Ground 4 Characters to level Cap...And this is the God's honest truth...I brought 10 different Characters (on 2 Servers) all the way through the Spider Bunker Legacy Quests on Talus...I have serious problems...lol
But in the end what made me walk away was mainly the 2 Character per Account deal...It's just such a rip-off in todays Gaming world...To keep My 3 Accounts running so I can have 6 Characters on a Server it's freaking $45 per Month...I get 9 on LOTRO for $10 per Month...A 60-day Game Card for AoC costs Me $14.99 at Best Buy...I get like 8 Characters per Server on AoC...I think it's more than that (toons per Server) on Vanguard and EQII...It's just such a rediculous rip-off...
I've now played a TON of LOTRO, and quite a bit of Vanguard, AoC and EQII...And while Galaxies is top notch in some areas (mainly Housing, Crafting/Harvesting, and Exploration), it REALLY lags behind other Games in many other areas...What I think most Folks miss, is the fact that SOE made PLENTY of mistakes AFTER the NGE...Even with the complete debacle of the NGE SOE managed to run a TON of Folks off with really dumb decisions...The 1st major update after the NGE and Musty took almost a Year and it was Restuss/GCW...Once again SoE spit in the face of it's loyal Customers by stripping Faction Ranks...I ground every single Faction point on 2 toons to Colonel and one toon to Captain...I did almost all of this by patrolling the Forests of Yavin II looking for ST Camps...It took FOREVER...I went from Colonel to Private on 2 toons, and Captain to Private on one, with the flip of a switch...And Folks wonder why Base Busts were so popular...lol...Most Folks (like Me) were simply saying F-U to SoE...Strip Our Rank and here's what we'll do...One of the only carry-overs we had from the CU was our Faction Ranks...I was SO proud of Our Base Bust operations simply because it was My only way of protesting...I refused to grind Rank in Restuss or any other way...It was principle...Nothing less or more...
Then about a year later, when they FINALLY realized they needed to ask the Players what they wanted, the Polls overwhelmingly favored Heroic Instances and PvE Content...So that's what we got...Problem is the Instances were not really all that Jedi friendly, and that's about as dumb as it gets when you know Jedi are over 50% of your Player Base...I'll never forget being a Leader in My own Guild, a Guild that was the biggest Reb Guild on our Server, and still never being able to get into an elite Exar run cause no one wanted more than 1-2 LS Jedi...And all I hear from the hardcore Players is "Just respec to medic to get your 5-piece!!"...It's just stupid...I picked Jedi for a reason...It's a SEVERE flaw in the Game when you have to respec your chosen Prof just to be able to run Instances for your 5-piece...I know at least 4-5 guys I still Game with that only got their 5-piece because they respeced to Medic...It's just SO dumb...
Then finally they come up with the 90-day Pack-up rule cause the Transfers whined and cried for their own Cities...That one rule completely gutted My Guild...I know it sounds crazy, but that one rule was the straw that broke a ton of backs in My Guild...Go back and look at Server Pop before and after the 90-day Pack-up Rule...I promise you'll see a direct relation to the decline in Players there...
So to the OP I say this...I agree on most points but in the end the negatives finally outweighed the positives for Me early last year...I just grew tired of having things I earned taken away...And more than anything I grew tired of paying $15 per Month for 2 toons per Server...If SWG went FTP with micro's, or cut the Sub fee down to $5 bucks a Month I might re-up for a looksee again before SWTOR comes out...But until then I'll be just biding My time waiting for a new hope...If Y'all know what I mean ...

There's no doubt that SOE made some really mind numbingly stupid decisions in the past - and there are many players who will simply never forgive SOE for what they did with the NGE and beyond but I'd rather play a game that has what I feel the best gameplay OVERALL - I emphasize this point because there's so much more to SWG than just the combat, but it seems like most players only want that aspect of gaming - and SWG offers a whole other world of gaming options. So - to sum up - if you only like combat and nothing else and think Bad Company is the shiate - then SWG may not be for you.
Also - I think the Star Wars fans waiting for Bioware to bring them the "New Hope" as you put it will probably be disappointed - based on what I've seen coming out lately in the MMO world. Bioware is under enormous pressure - both from the fans and financially to pull this off. SWTOR will certainly not have the sandbox aspect of SWG but rather more the console game for the PC feel. The days of the epic MMOs are seemingly gone and SWG is one of the few still standing.
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
The point you find so fascinating about SWG is also what I feel is probably one of it's biggest flaws. SWG DOES do it all and DOES offer a sh!t load to players to do...unfortunately, it doesn't do any of it 'well'. Space sim players will quickly get bored with the limits on space zones, PvP fanatics will find the lag horrific and lack of any meaning frustrating, PvEers biggest "challenges" are in the form of increased health or weeks worth of a grind, collections are all the same, just in different locations, crafting was great, until the TCG came out, entertaining is fine, if you like to be used as nothing more than an ATK buff bot, new content is never anything "new", it's all just a new grind. Meatlump Themepark was one of the few things to buck this trend, but they stupidly made it a mid level quest that few 90's have ever even tried, Storyteller/Chronicles could have been massive, but again, it's half ass'd and completely redundant quests like only SoE could develop, and Star Wars fans looking for a "Star Wars" experience will never find it in this game.
SWG is a jack of all trades, master of none.
That may be what YOU are looking for...but it doesn't fit many people obviously - the numbers speak for themselves.
I recently re-subbed for a few months just because I went through a starwars relapse and just had to play some starwars games hehe. Pretty much the only thing keeping swg alive is the fact that you can live in the star wars universe and it feels like the starwars universe. If you couldn't run around as a storm trooper or bounty hunter etc. the game would have been shut down years ago. They managed to merge casual gaming and role-play really well. The engine is still a piece of crap and the amount of bugs that are still around since launch are really annoying but it's starwars! I have no idea why SOE has apparently abandoned swg but it was probably the worst thing they could have done. The starwars license isn't something you get and then just ignore. It's not to late for SOE to get it's head out of it's ass and fix the game but thanks to the rich capitalist scum that run the games industry I doubt it will happen. Not unless some bastard gets a new boat out of it. As for population, Starsider has a nice population but most other servers are dead.
I just subbed to SWG last week, Ive tried every MMO and this is by far one of the best I've played (Excluding UO, that will always have a soft spot in my heart).
SWG legacy quests are fun, it gives you objective and a feel tat u accomplish something.. not just aimless grinding from one quest to another.
The content is made, just going around in a big world, I see players rping all time an d I love that fact.
I think some people are too opinionated when it comes to opionons, they slame down someone whos enjoying something.. because they think their OPINION counts only...
Opinions are like arse holes, everyones got one.
