Less than a year and already server mergers. Not a good sign for any game.
Hogwash. They simply built out too many darn servers on launch. Besides, we have zero information regarding server merges. All we know is that Chris is talking about this.
Server merges do not mean reduced servers. It is only a balancing of the game at this point.
WHile the numbers and profitability of Aion are good, it could be better.
I am in a 4 yr old guild that has lost most of the top players and nearly all of the guild officers. These people love pvp but open pvp along with the grind starts to feel like a job for some, myself included. The guild is growing in-game due to new recruits
More areas will help but not as much, imo, as more areas that will allow people to level without having to constantly check out the map for roving bands of gankers. There are nights I just don't feel like being at a high level of attention when I simply don't play as this is not possible.
One of the issues with the grind is the lack of desire to level multiple characters which would extend the life of the game for many. People run to max level and sit, repeat content, get bored and loose interest. Very few have multiple high levels at this time.
Dunno what will happen but I'm looking a bit now and waiting for GW2, a game NC should take longggg look at. Great PVP, great PVE and a game that most people had multiple max levels.
I'd still expect Aion to have 20-21 all good populated servers in the West after merges, which is pretty good and where the game should be.
It had already found its niche since a few months, and those merges are a godsend to the unfortunate players on low pop servers who can't enjoy the game to the fullest.

Don't worry, that will be the alarm pet's job from 2.0 onwards! xD (provided you shell the millions needed to buy him -.-)

People need to realize that every game has a critical mass.
People flocked to Aion because it wasn't exactly clear what it was. The WoW people thought it was going to be WoW with a different skin.
The pvp people were hoping it would be a spiritual successor to Lineage 2 pvp or pick your favorite more hardcore pvp game and insert.
The pve people weren't clear as to whether they could avoid pvp as it seemed that you could (and you actually can but it does tend to limit where you go).
The game isn't a bad game at all. It is however bad if you are one of the above and were greeted with something different.
In any case, polished beautiful game is going to get a lot of people. However, the reality is that only so many people would really like this game.
Server mergers are a "good" thing because it means the devs are paying attention. If they stood on ceremony and said "we don't need server mergers" then there would be all sorts of people on under populated servers who would leave anyways because there just wasn't an acceptable amount of population.
With any game, after you hit that criticla mass, the people who actually like the game, you are going to have to deal with population. The people who play aion and who like it aren't going anywhere. So the devs are looking at the population and saying "hey, these people aren't going to be happy, we need to get more of our core players together.
The only thing Aion suffers from is that it didn't meet expectations of players who would never have played it to begin with if it was clear what the game was about.

Combining boring, recycled content with a horrible grind is not a recipe for success.
Bad PvP and non existant end game is the icing on the cake.
