terrible terrible terrible idea. if she does die it will be one of the longest most painful most agonizing deaths you can imagine. Being swept away by the sea, potentially living for days under a beating sun with water saturated skin and a extremely dehydrated body, with constant emotional and physical pain wishing you had never come out to sea in the first place. If shes lucky she'll drown quick or get eaten by a shark. Whoever advocates this has no clue as to the dangers of the sea. And if a 16 year old girl by Gods grace actually makes the voyage, its nothing short of a miracle. Ill be looking forward to hearing about the search and rescue mission in the news... If she decides to go through with it. I thought it was funny the OP that compared this to driving and other things.
Well I guess if it is a legit trip? Even on her website they arent furnishing tracking data. She could be shadowed by a support ship ,no one really knows .If it is on the up and up.
I hope for the girl's sake that it's a big freaking hoax (like that man against wild guy) and they've got a professional crew sailing the boat for her. A goddam publicity stunt isn't worth a young life, and it is fairly obvious she doesn't understand how potentially dangerous this is.
deviliscious: (PS. I have been told that when I use scientific language, it does not make me sound more intelligent, it only makes me sound like a jackass. It makes me appear that I am not knowledgable enough in the subject I am discussing to be able to translate it for people outside the field to understand. Some advice you might consider as well)

Here is a link to her blog. She is now saying that they will have a tracking system setup in a few weeks.I guess on her first attempt they did have one up for like ..1 day LOL..
Her parents think the the other ship intentionally turned off their signal which caused the collision. We all know how parents are especially little girl parents ;its always someone elses fault.
Sabotage her trip I guess. I really doubt that considering the ship of that size it could have been fatal.I was just wondering if The International communtity for sailing records has ways of verifying these attempts?
How many people at 16 years of age realize risk of activities anyways. There was a study I saw a couple of years ago that that part of the brain in young adults that processes risk doesnt fully develop till 23 to 25 years .There is plenty of proof when you see college kids these days as there has always been.
Edit: Also you may know about this .When in International waters if you have Satellite TV is it available wherever you go as well as Internet access through Satellite Internet or do you need to be near some shore?
Hehe I also bet if she has another accident she wont update it on her site
Can you imagine this ..... Jessica's update for "such and such date" ," I uhhh,I ... I....Like Ran into an Island today,Even though it was 20 miles wide and stationary ,it was the one who Hit Me .
IT was the islands fault though because I was busying playing with my Hello Kitty stuffed animals .As soon as my boat is repaired I will be on my way.Bad,bad island...LOL.

When she inevitably fucks up and starts crying "help", we should all ( including the sea rescuers ) say in unison "it ain't our business".
Then watch the boat sink while sipping cognac in the comfort of our homes.
Sail on, little girl. Zorvan needs some entertainment.
Did you see where officials are going to stop recognizing a "youngest" category in this event because they fear it's too dangerous and maybe the next person who is even younger may get hurt or killed. So even though she will be the youngest, she's not going to officially get credit for it. Also, there appears to be some credit as to whether or not she went enough miles.
But what she did was still amazing and I congratulate her. I didn't think she would make it.
While I do congratulate her, I wonder if people would have made the same fuss if it she wasn't female. In a way, I think it's sexism. The way I hear people talk about her voyage, they seem to talk about it as if she can do it 'despite being young and female'. A guy that did the same thing and was not even a year older didn't get quite the same attention.

What? Why is it sexist? She's trying to accomplish something no one her age and sex has done before. And I totally believe a fuss would have been made if it had been a 16 year old boy, too. It IS more common for men, even boys, to acheive things like this and she wanted to push that boundry and dispell the myth that women can't compete equally. How is that sort of thing ever bad (views on the danger aside)? That comment just makes no sense to me at all.

By making a bigger fuss than usual because the person is female (compared to the then 17-year old Jesse Martin, and a barely 15-year old Belgian sailer who tried and failed) makes it seem like it is all the more exceptional because she is female. I don't know how I can put it any simpler. It reinforces the myth that the average girl is somehow far less capable than the average guy her age, making Jessica's feats seem all the more extraordinary. A difference of perspectives, I guess. I do understand your view.
Just an amazing young woman and what an incredible person. She will go far. I do not think we have seen the last of Jessica Watson. Keep your eyes and ears open - who knows what she'll do next. ^_^
Why people do less complaining if it were a male is because men do more and willingly stupid thing compared to woman, who got that testosterone in our body that sometimes make us think we are invincible. When a female do such thing we scratch our head and think should they not be more sensible and all with that fragile body of theirs.
It's incorrect to think so because some woman got what most male have that sense of doing sensless thing pure out of enjoyment and challange. (Same thing but reverse: men who play with dolls)
Ever had the feeling rumbling around full of scratches and bleeding all over but feeling the king of the world invincible, the feeling of euphoria? Then the next day bed ridden and moaning about all the pain? That is something more typical male than woman. (Ofcource their are woman like that and I love those woman, great to hang around with.)
It really all depends if she comes back alive. Most people like her that have a dream of becoming something, and going out to adventure; they mostly never come back. I guess some parts of this world are to never be found. This may be a myth to you guys, but you havent read what I have.

I don't care if she gets the record or not-Just want her to make it back/turn back home alive.
