Vanguard: After 3 years now.. and it still hard crashes this much? Really??!??

Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

{sigh}

I went back and tried the trial of Vanguard this weekend to see how far it has come since I bought it at launch back in 2007.

And I was pleasantly surprised to see a decent amount of low level players on the isle with me running around. I never expected to see more then a handful of players the whole time. The game was running pretty smoothly when I was playing, and the graphics as nice as ever. The game is actually pretty fun.

But..........

WTF.

Crashing like twice an hour to my desktop and three times completely causing my PC to reboot from a severe error?

...Really?

Now, before everyone jumps on and tells me that it's gotta be my PC.. I tried playing on THREE different PC's. One with a clean install of XP and all the drivers. My main PC with a clean install of Windows 7 with all drivers current and updated. And my wives laptop. I'm pretty savvy on being up to date on my computers... AND no other games have had any problems like I've seen with Vanguard this weekend.

So.. is it just me... or is Vanguard still this damn buggy three f'ing years after its launch?

Truly is SAD to see a game with so damn much potential in the sorry and inexcusable state that it sure seems to be in at this point in it's life. Sheeesh.

I don't think it's just him. When I tried the games a few weeks ago, I don't remember having any crashes, but I DO remember the game feeling very buggy overall.

Not sure what to tell you zaxtor, I haven't had one crash. oh sure the game is still buggy but I haven't experienced anything like that.

I have tried the Vanguard trial a good 3-4 times just to see if it hooked me. I usually played it for a day or so, trying out different characters, and just never really liked it. I would say I logged at LEAST 50 hours play time on the isle total, and that is a low ball number.

And I have never had it crash. Ever. Not quite sure what your issue is, since you insist it is not your computer, but seriously... I think it is your computer. You claim you tried it on three different machines and blah blah, but I find that pretty hard to beleive. I just dont think you would have actually spent the time to download it on three different machines. Or do you mean you copied and pasted the files? Because that might be your problem right there.

At the end of the day, if a game is crashing, and ESPECIALLY if the computer is needing to restart completely, it is the machine. Even in Age of Conan, during beta, it would just crash. I never once had to completely reset the machine. I am going to assume that it is an issue with your RAM, or maybe your HDD's. Drivers are a maybe... But I dont think it would drop the whole machine, or else it would do it a lot more often. Might also be cooling issues.

Really? Because I haven't crashed at all, nor have I encountered any bugs :/

I tried the game after hearing how it was a misunderstood gem. It performs horribly for me. This is on the same PC I play AOC DX10 with the highest settings. I can handle minor hangups, but it hitched constantly and crashed several times. I'd expect to play a far less graphic-intensive game with no problem - that didn't happen so I uninstalled.

I dunno, maybe it is "just" me. But I got frustrated with it and went out and bought the newest expansion of Everquest 2 this evening and gave SOE a little more money, heh. I installed EQ2 Sentinel Fate or whatever with all the EQ2 expansions included.. seemed like a decent deal for $24.88. Been playing it without a hiccup for about the last four or five hours after nothing but bugs and frustrations with Vanguard yesterday and this morning.

Probably won't play either of them a lot anyhow, as I had a cold rainy weekend alone this weekend and was looking to pass the time. Been since the launch of EQ2 and Vanguard since I had played either of them, so was curious anyhow. EQ2 would definitely be my choice of the two games now though based on stability and smooth game play over constant frustrations in Vanguard this weekend.

Speaking more on Vanguard... If I come back as a pretty savvy computer guy and install what should be a professional mmo like Vanguard that has been out about three years now and experience what I witnessed - well, it's a HUGE turn off. I shouldn't have to spend hours of my times searching Vanguard support and forums for fixes or work arounds on a game like this which has been out this long. I guess this is my point - and my major disappointment in what truly does look like a high potential game otherwise. I dunno.

Played it for a few months not long ago. Had no problems with crashing. Mind you, I am still using X.P. Some of my freinds with better systems where having a few problems with freezing/crashing. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

  • metalcoremetalcore Member Posts: 798

I play it regularly on Windows 7  64 bit.

I use to play it on Windows Vista and Windows XP (have two accounts) and still do from time to time.

Not crashed in a long time.

My Vista machine use to crash from time to time, but I deleted all files, reinstall and now it never crashes.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

Haven't crashed in about a year

  • DmyankeeDmyankee Member UncommonPosts: 135

I run VG on two computers granted it is XP Pro, but i am upgrading to Win 7 home prem. But so far been playing for 3 weeks and it is really smooth.

I am sorry that the game did not work on your machine, I am glad to see that you did decide to give the game another go. In all honesty this game is fun and hard (mainly for trying to figure things out) and a lot of challenges.

It's not just you... I don't know if it's certain types of hardware or what but when I last played the trial it was crashing a lot for me too.

  • KruulKruul Member UncommonPosts: 482

You quite possibly have some corrupted files in your client and when you copied them over to your other PC's you get the same errors.

  • Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

Okay. Uninstalled it on all three computers.. and to be fair, neither my 2nd computer or laptop are equipped with a good enough video card to play this game properly even though they do surpass the minimum required hardware.

Downloaded a fresh new install of the game as I slept last night on my main gaming rig. I'll play some more tonight after work perhaps and see if it runs any better or crash-free.

  • Unexplained crashing is a pita and part of oyur lives these days. I have had rare crashes to desktop with Vanguard, but they are very rare. Are you runnning it in administrator mode?

  • MurashuMurashu Member UncommonPosts: 1,386

I had several crashes to desktop this weekend and ended up deleting the cashe then rescanning. It took about 15 minutes to run but I havent crashed since then.

Playing on Vista 32, Nvidia 8600 GS, Quadcore 2.4GHz, 3.25GB RAM, high settings

Game sometimes crashes, when I often alt-tab to desktop. (i.e. a friend annoys me via skype)

I am trying Vanguard for the first time here.

Installed it from Station Players (HUGE, freakin' download).

I can play for hours without issue (well, some freezing) and then there are times when I can't stay logged in for more than five minutes.

I am connected through high-speed over my power lines, so that could be some of the issue.  Reading here makes me think that there may be more to it.

Living in a rural area with spotty internet, all MMOs are buggy for me.

Can't say I've had a problem with it. VG has crashed twice on me in just over 2 weeks since I came back. Each time I had just hit some whacky key combo on my keyboard or something... not that it should have happened, but it could have been the cause.

That said, if it's crashing constantly for you, while it's hardly happening at all for others then you could safely assume it's a system specific issue.

Unfortunate that you're unable to play it reliably, though. The game's come a long way and is, in my opinion, worth far more attention from SOE than it's getting.

I rarely crash.  Maybe once a month.

Running 2 accounts at the same time, on more than one PC, Windows 7-64 bit. No crashes, just the usual bugs, now and then(no mini-map, inv items...)

  • DarbiiRueDarbiiRue Member UncommonPosts: 832

Well I crash, but its my whole PC and I get a BSOD. Now I can live with that and I'm working towards a fix. I personally think its my PC. I have a good one, but I think a setting is off somewhere that is causing this because I've had issues with AoC overheating too, which makes no bloomin' sense, so... definitely my problem and not the games.

As far as your crash goes, I've not ever had a crash like that, where it actually goes to desktop. Sounds like maybe you have either a bad install or a system issue... Because I've not heard of a crash like that happening, and even the BSOD, I seem to be the only one with that issue.

Shodan, do you have a UI mod? If you're using Drox, I'm fairly sure it has not been updated. There was a bag modification done by SOE a little while ago that made the default bag larger. Those items you speak of, they're still there you just can't see them because the guy who made Drox never updated his UI mod for that.

My suggestion, either search vginterface.com for a bag mod upgrade (one that tells you how to make the changes yourself) or try a different UI.

Then again if you're not using a custom UI, I have no idea what that issue is as I've not experienced it with the default UI.

Same, VG for a month now and no crashes of any sort.  Have flown through a mountain, had quest items not in game and interesting button responsiveness but no crashes of any kind.

I'm running Advanced Map Info and the default UI on Win7, AMD Phenom II and AMD 4890.

Now it is super hot in my office lately and EQ2 faceplanted due to heat but VG has been fine.

Okay, so heres the deal I've done a few things recently and it seems to have helped.

So I don't know what OS you're running, I'm going to assume Vista or Windows 7. I'm on Windows 7 and heres how I've combated my BSOD and crashing issue and while playing yesterday I had zero crashes/BSOD's.

First off, whatever .exe you use to launch the game, try adding -dx9 to the end of the target field (make sure there is a space between the target and -dx9).

    Example: "C:Program Files (x86)SonyVanguardVanguard.exe" -dx9

That way it forces Dx9 to run.

Secondly, go here C:Program Files (x86)SonyVanguardBinVGClient.exe

Right click on that .exe and hit properties > Click the Compatibility tab > Check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and choose "Windows Vista Service Pack 2" > Check off Run as Administrator

Now I don't know which of these stopped my BSOD, but the dx9 suggestion was on a Bioshock forum where someone was having BSOD's on a constant basis like I was, and the second was a suggestion from a friend who used to have a crashing to desktop issue as well, and so I decided to just do both. So far, everything is working a lot better. Hopefully it will stay that way.

    Good luck to you! :)
