I don't think there should be this mysterious stigma against F2P. The game is really good now, and going F2P would mean more players (and presumably more $$ for Funcom if they do it right). Both WAR and AOC should go free to play and I expect both to be F2P before the end of 2011, probably sooner. If FC have any sense they will go F2P before the new Conan movie comes out as that we almost certainly drive interest in the game too.

I'm all for it. If it's done right, like the LotRO thing seems to, F2P could be really good for AoC. That holds as long, of course, as we won't have to pay for in-game advantages like items or combat pets.
Just to clarify, I'm currently subbed to AoC and I've been subbed since launch, so I do like the game as it is. It could, however, use the population boost.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.
I think a lot of MMOs will be veering in this direction. With the fat WoW shadow covering the eyes of gamers to most MMOs with their same sub fee, now they have an out to become more popular and still rake in the cash if it's done right. I think it's a great idea but I don't think it's happening XD
No. I will quit if AoC adds an itemshop.
Both P2P and F2P have it's advantages but I prefer a game where you can't buy yourself a good character.
Besides, AoC doesn't really have enough content for that. DDO have loads of zones that you have to pay for, AoC have just enough to be fun. FC would have to add a lot of new dungeons and raid zones to sell. And FCs team isn't large enough for that, they would have to add a lot more than they added since launch.
Unless of course you want them to sell gear instead, but that would really suck.
Vanguard would be good to make F2P. AoC is not right now, maybe in 2-3 year when the content is large enough but I still prefer it to be P2P.
..with Godslayer I think they have the content for it. Everything old world could be F2P (except for a few dungeons) and then the expansion is made into 'pass access' etc like DDO. I think they could get away with it now given all the new content they have added over the last two years.
NO!
Yeah, that would be cool. I didn't like AoC much when I tried it, but I would give it more of a chance if it went f2p. I would definitely be playing WAR right now if it went f2p. It's not good enough to justify paying $15 a month (imo) but f2p would be perfect.
If they made destiny quests payable and rest of the content free then that might work.
DDO was easy to convert to F2P, AoC being instances would also turn over rather easily. Tortage is free every other zone is bought. New race... bought. Dungeons... bought. VG and LotRO will be harder though since there are no real lines to cross though I guess in VG you could do the whole buy quest lines thing or sell it as chunks. Chunks being zones in VG.
Way off topic but I was playing VG last night and frankly its exactly the same as EQ1 as far as open world and zoning. EQ1 was chunks too that outside of original EQ1 became less open as to where you could cross to the next zone. Think the Karanas, then think VG... same thing.
That said I'd rather see the AoC team working on DX10 threading issues since its currently not and as such makes DX10 performance terrible compared to what it could be.
AoC has enoug content now. Lotro doesn't have an item shop more different package. They 9Turbine) have stated you will not be able to buy items which will assist you in-game.

DX10 works fine for the vast majority of players.

Or instead of paying for instances and stuff you can pay a monthly fee so you get them all aslong as you pay the monthly fee, seriously im playing darkfall now and if it ever goes f2p im going to look for a p2p mmo i dont like the community in f2p mmos i dont like the gold farmers+sellers in f2p mmorpgs and in f2p mmos evri1 uses bots and hacks since they dont care cus they didnt pay the game.
and if you think the monthly fee is to mutch for a month of fun then you are having money problems and shouldnt play games.
or instead of buying a cheese burger some fries and a small soda you can pay the same ammount to the mmo company and have A MONTH of for for it
looks like they already did

I miss DAoC
I tend to agree, F2P seems to draw some less than stellar players.
Sorry, but I've seen gold seller spam in every P2P MMO i've played, or tried. I've also saw horrible communities in P2P games (specifically WoW and AoC on a server Tyranny I think). Also, botters will bot in any game P2P or F2P. People will buy gold in any game as well.
Also, it's not that the monthly fee is too much. I don't mind paying a sub fee at all for a game I like. What bothers me is the waste of time and money when I don't like a game.
I can't judge MMOs in a matter of a few levels, so I usually level up a decent amount before dismissing the game. Regardless of if I use the 2nd month or not, I'm out about $60 on a game. Unless you come into the game late and get it cheap, or there are trials, you're stuck with it. You can't trade MMOs.
$60 isn't much, but it's still money you wasted. Also, unless you're the type that levels for 30 min and hates the game, you've put some time into the game. With the f2p model at least you didn't have to spend $60 to find out you don't like it.
There goes the neighborhood.
But of course all those crappy items is stuff I already can claim since I already own a collectors edition and they have added all the crap to those people. I rather see it as you can upgrade your game from regular to CE.
I can claim every single item there except the amazon bow (which people who bought the game from Amazon got, I have a Rhino and a War Mammoth instead) .
So calling that an itemshop is somewhat misleading.
Actually, it does but it needs more optimization. My old computer couldn't max it (Q9400, 4GB ram, 295 GTX) and my new one still gets a lag spike occasionally when I max out (AMD Phenomena II 3.2 ghz x6, 8Gb DDR3 1600, 480 GTX).
So I wouldn't complain either if they spend a little more work on Dx 10. And maybe add Dx11 support also.
There are free trials you know... Yes, they are usually for 20 levels only or so but it will at least help you from that 30 minute thing.
No item shop, but just add ads in between loading screens.
AoC is loaded with loading screens so lots of room for ads... I think a 10-30 seconds ad would be fair...
Didn't say it wasn't fine said it wasn't optimised for threading like the DX9 client is. See in DX9 AoC uses available cores, in DX10 it does not. So my FPS drops because my CPU cores are sitting idle which makes my GPU sit idle waiting on data. So ya, its fine but its not as good as it could be. Its kind of in the same state the DX9 engine was in beta.
Anarchy Online didn't become partially free to play until after 3 major expansions and 2 booster packs. So when AoC reaches at least that much content, then they can maybe think about it. Until then, no.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.-
-And on the 8th day, man created God.-
So you consider Collector's Editions of all mmos a "cash shop"? lol
Because that's all it is, they just made the CE's digital instead of a box like the original CE.

perhaps when they have a shitload of content and a social armor tab for appearance armor, they could do a cash shop. until then? no
Link please, because I think you are wrong about that.
LotR most definitely IS adding a shop. Check the threads about it in the LOTR forum to learn more.

7. Will I still be able to play and enjoy the game without buying items from the LOTRO Store, or is that my only option for gaining weapons, armor, potions, and other goodies such as premium loot?
The purchase of items in the LOTRO Store is entirely optional. While items in the Store are designed to immediately enhance your in-game experience, premium loot and rare gear are the rewards of adventure and are only obtainable through gameplay.
