Heh another block of complaints...if you have that much worry and concern then why are you even interested in FFXIV. Go play something that you know has those features and stop with the whining, "oh this better have or else"; we don't care if you're not going to play it if you can't jump around like a chicken with its head cut off, go play a game that allows it and begone....sheesh

You saying it's not legitimate reply?
If someone comes to Halo forums and says "I'm concerned that this game is not like Gran Turismo, the devs should make it so it is" do you tell him "yes I hope the devs look into it" or "go find a game that is like Gran Turismo instead of coming here trying to change the game to fit your preferences"?
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
So I have a few concerns about this new FF MMO that I hope are not in the final version of the game.
It's a little long winded, so please bear with me. If you know that any of these are true, just let me know to soften the blow.
#1 - There may be no jumping. I know it seems pointless, but without that ability, I feel as though I am plastered against a 2D plane. Whether the game is in 3D or 2D, if I cannot jump it bothers me immensely. Imagine playing Mario and never being able to jump...
As others have pointed out, that's a weak analogy - I'm not going to repeat why. This is a matter of personal taste, and really not having anything to do with the quality of the gameplay experience overall.
#2 - A mysterious invisible barrier that instantly stops me a foot away from touching all objects, like a box, wall, or lamppost. When this happens, it makes a game feel so restrictive and linear.
Yeah, that would be kind of annoying sometimes. Then again how much quality play are you going to get from crawling on said box...? And how many games have zero invisible walls? Some games just make them more apparent than others. We don't know anything about this for FFXIV.
#3 - Unable to enter bodies of water. It is very rare to find a new 3D MMO these days that do not allow you to enter water. So rare, that I do not even know of any current ones that limit you in such a way and are of high quality.
Aion.
#4 - Very slow movement speed. I understand all MMO's try to immerse you in its game-world, but I don't need it to be so immersive that it literally takes me ten minutes to walk from the bank to the auction area. FF-XI was painfully slow.
Yeah, FFXI was like that. FFXIV is not FFXI. The running already seems faster from what we've seen in the videos, and not all forms of transportation have been detailed yet (basically none have).
#5 - Overly complex crafting element. I love gathering things and making something functional from them to use or sell... However if I must click on little boxes 10+ times to generate 1 item of random quality or complete failure, I'm going to be very disappointed. I do not understand why there cannot be both methods of creating items -- One-click creations and the Multi click skilled creations... maybe make extremely rare recipes a skill game and all the rest one click wonders. By extremely rare, I mean extremely rare... Maybe 15 to 20 recipes require a "skill game" to complete. Another idea for having both methods would be after you have mastered a particular tier, all recipes in that tier become one-click creations. For instance, you're cooking a tier III fish recipe and you get enough cooking experience that you finally mastered tier III cooking... now that T3 fish recipe only takes one click to produce with a better chance of getting a high quality result.
I'm not even sure where you are getting this - sounds like you are applying your experience with other games to this one for no reason. Maybe I'm not keeping up with all the announcements for FFXIV, but I've seen little to squat on crafting at all. What we do know is that you'll have to switch to a separate class just to partake of it - and they've said that you can be a pure crafter if you want - so it makes sense that the system would be pretty involved. Again, just speculation either way.
#6 - All game servers may be in Japan. There is no point to explain why this would be bad. It should be common sense.
I didn't have problems with FFXI when this was the case, and technology has only improved since then. Besides, if they are international servers, it's always going to be bad for someone no matter where you place them. Separating them out kind of defeats the purpose of having those international non-specialized servers, because more people will choose their local ones. Ultimately, we don't know how it'll work out yet.
#7 - Transition animations prior to every single battle. Ok, this used to be cool I guess, but it is extremely boring now. I can see it used on boss encounters and only bosses.
Not sure what exactly you're talking about here...you mean in FFXI where the character readies their weapon for a moment before starting combat? I think FFXI is probably the only mmo that ever did that, so there's not necessarily any indication FFXIV would do it. Honestly, that seems like major nitpicking regardless...
#8 - Unable to tell a friend what server I am on so they can create a character on it. Never have I seen this done before...ever...until FF-XI. This better not happen again.
They've already addressed this issue - you can choose your server from the start.
#9 - Artificial limitations to crafting skills. I should not have to be level 50 to be able to use certain crafting or fishing instruments. I can see you being unable to use a tier III fishing rod unless you have tier III fishing ability... just don't also make the requirement need a level 30 character as well. Levels and crafting skills should be completely independent from each other.
Have you read about the armoury system this game features at all? Crafting is it's own discipline, with it's own classes, with their own skills. Crafting skills are treated as separate and equal classes to combat classes, and the leveling works the same way.
#10 - Artificial limitations to consumption items. It is odd to see a drink or food item that says you need to be level 65 to use it... Just make the stat increase that the item gives a percentage based on your level. If I am level 12 and want to purchase a top tier item that increases HP for three hours, then great... I give away my Gil and consume the item granting me +48 HP for three hours. At level 27 consuming the same item gives me +312 HP. ...and so on.
It's possible, but that seems like a lot of unnecessary coding time for every single item in the game, when you could just assign them some skill level. Then you have to worry about balance at every level for every item on top of it. There is a reason they do that, ya know. You don't touch things you don't know how to use properly - what's odd about that?
--- I have a feeling though... a horrible one... that all of the above concerns will be true. Every single one of them. Even #6 which they said there would be servers in other locations this time around -- I have doubts. I just wish they'd realize that #1 through #8 are simply not fun in MMO's that take far more time than a single player game ever would. I guess I can only hope for the best and expect the worst. As an FF fan, I'm going to have to try it regardless.
A little more research would have shown you that some of these are already prevented from happening, some of them we have no way of knowing whether they will happen or not, and some are only "not fun" based upon your personal taste. Personally, I find most of those easily ignorable - you're nitpicking too much imo.

I'm pretty sure that's what he was saying yeah, and it's true actually.
Whether that person should or should not play a different game is irrelevant to whether the features being discussed should be present. You also used a weak analogy and straw man by likening it to someone attempting to change the genre of the game, which clearly no one is.

Yeah, I agree my analogy was a bit extreme there, but it doesn't change anything.
Jumping is a platforming/sometimes an action feature. Now he is not saying "Plz make XIV more like Crash Bandicoot" but he is saying "Plz make this RPG more like a platforming game!"
And now just because every other MMO has become more about platforming doesn't mean every MMO should do the same.
Even though some FPS games have RPG-style character progression, are people asking for every FPS to have such thing? Nope.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I don't see where anyone said that. What was being discussed was that jumping should or should not be implemented, and whether the game world should be designed to take the feature into account. Genre really has no relevance to the discussion, because whether jumping is added or not, the game is still very much the same genre. This wouldn't be the first time that some elements common of one genre would be present in a game of another genre.
I agree that anyone saying "there is no excuse for a current game to lack x feature" (when that feature is something mechanic dependent like jumping) is missing the point. If we were only talking about whether this one game should have it though, then a valid argument can be made for either position.

The point here is that you in your stuborn egocentric attitude fail to realise that although a feature like jumping may annoy you, it adds a lot more depth to the gameplay AND the world. It also saves alot of time..

I shouldn't reply to this one, but...
What made you think jumping annoys me? I don't care.
And holy crap we are about to beat a dead horse here, doesn't sound like a good idea.

Unless you are discussing just for the sake of having a discussion.
Pretty much... and believe me, this is not the first time on these forums that we're having this particular discussion.
If you dig deep enough, you can find a thread (or 5?) solely about jumping and I've probably posted there as well. We're going through the same things, pretty much. I just can't be assed to repeat it again.
I can even tell what your next reply will be, and next, and next.. /bleh

#8 - Unable to tell a friend what server I am on so they can create a character on it. Never have I seen this done before...ever...until FF-XI. This better not happen again.
As far as I am aware, since launch the game TELLS you what server you are on at the character select screen AND when you log in to your characters. World passes which allow you to invite friends to the server you are on were present since at least PS2 launch which then were pretty much defunct a few years later when they decided that the servers no longer needed artificial poplulation balancing and made server selection part of character creation.
For future reference when you want to list off concerns/aurguments, word your statements better and get your facts straight.

To be honest, when I played WoW I did find the jumping hurt the immersion.
Also in other MMORPG's I found this jumping annoying.
Yes I would prefer if they let it out, because it is the most annoying, frustrating thing to see. Even thinking about it make me annoyed. I find it hard to believe why people defend such thing.
I like platform games, I love free-running in Assassins Creed, but please don't add it in a MMORPG. Let that kind of thing be a part of single player, or normal multiplayer, but not in a persistence world. The abuse from such abilities is more annoying.
I never see people jump around. It just doesn't make sense
If a MMORPG adds jump, they should make it so people can't act like bunnies who can't stop jumping.
Make it like sprint ability in some games, that after 1 jump you lose some stamina/endurance, or give some few sec delay before you can move, so that people find jumping annoying.

Well I wonder, some of the games were you can get closeyou have the problem sometimes a arm, or other part of the character get's in the object. I find that more ugly. It is better if they can do it right, if they can't, then I prefer to stand a foot away.

I find this also unrealistic, but I hear you could swim in this thread? I have no idea myself. I hope you can swim, I don't have to go underwater, but at least swimming across a river.

Well I think everyone should be able to sprint, and some classes should have some better sprint abilities. Also if they have mounts (which FFXIV has) then you have a reason to get one. But it must be in balance.

The point here is that you in your stuborn egocentric attitude fail to realise that although a feature like jumping may annoy you, it adds a lot more depth to the gameplay AND the world. It also saves alot of time..
The flaw here is to suggest that to include jumping is to also include content that takes measurable and worthwhile advantage of the feature. This isn't the case, or anything near it. While they could include jumping in such a way as to provide further depth and immersion to the gameplay experience, they could just as easily implement it poorly and to the detriment of those same things. Or, because it's unnecessary to the game they're wanting to provide, they could leave it out. To demand a gameplay feature that has proven excessive and/or unnecessary is to ask for a feature that probably would contribute negatively to the whole.
More to the point: Jumping? Seriously? I admit that jumping randomly at least gives me a button to jam on to some effect while idling in WoW, but where in any major MMO have we seen content added that takes significant advantage of the feature? That may sound snarky, but it's as much an honest question as anything. What content are you intending for them to include along with the feature that might take advantage of it in such a way as to add actual depth, rather than the shallow and irrelevant function it would otherwise serve? Thus far, i've only seen it really suggested as a means to bypass minor travel time inconveniences that may not even be an issue in FFXIV. And if it's just to ease ADD and boredom from idling - ah, well - log off. You should probably have something better to do than nothing, yeah? The absence of a jump feature didn't hinder FFXI's gameplay, and while occasional bits of geography might be a nuisance to bypass while traveling, it was far from game breaking. This, as has been said, just seems majorly nitpicky to me. Definitely more a product of personal preference than a flaw in gameplay mechanics.

dungeons and dragons online takes significant advantage of its jumping mechanic.
actually now that i think about it, every mmo i've played has actually taken advantage of jumping.
having to jump across a gap during a boss fight, jumping across broken bridges, jumping 180 degree instant cast spells followed by another 180 turn back the other direction all in the air to keep running in one direction during hectic pvp situations.
jumping is pretty sweet............... i understand the concern of jumping abuse, but jumping is inherently cool. i think a sprint type mechanic is a good idea for jumping, some sort of stamina exhaustion.
WoW had lots of dungeons which had jumping required to reach certain areas, terrain features you could jump up and over to avoid running around them, and also short cuts which allowed you skip areas which you had already cleared.
You could make games which don't allow running too. You don't NEED running in an MMORPG - but it would be less real and immersive.
Don't take a flaw in the design and treat it like a plus. You know what kind of posters do that.

Do you honestly realize what you're saying?
If an RTS has no levels or ways to progress your squad, is it a bad RTS?
If you can't control an army in an action game, is it a bad action game?
If there is no driving simulation in Super Mario, is it a bad platforming game?
Are those 'flaws' in the design? If so, all games have 'flaws' in their design, since according to you, every game should have something from every genre in them.
What would become of the games in that case? When you have a, lets say 80 million budget, and you used it to create RTS features in an action game, or RPG features in an RTS game, would that make the game better? Or would it make the RTS features as well as the RPG features lackluster? We'd get Spore, a game that does everything 'alright' or worse, but nothing exceptionally well.
This is why you're MMO doubter. You are above the developers because apparently, you are not limited by such irrelevant factors such as time or money. Of course jumping function would allow the developers to create encounters that require Platforming skills, but it also limits the developers on what they can or can't do with their time and money.
And if their decision is to make an MMORPG, not MMO platformer, you are silly for blaming them.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
In any mmo with mature community jumping is not a problem. In wow its a problem. In VG it is not. Since by all accounts FF has a mature community jumping should not be an issue.

It wouldn't be an issue anyway. All you have to do is put a cooldown on it. Who cares if anyone jumps every thirty seconds?

A cooldown is a good option.
If they add that, then I may like the jump function.
And if their decision is to make an MMORPG, not MMO platformer, you are silly for blaming them.
how many MMOs doesnt have jumping.
and as said before hate my adventure games to be limited by things that shouldnt be a problem to pass by the normal functionallity of your body.
and as baio2k said Id hope they dont put it in FFXIV since its not been developed with this in mind....like any other feature putted in, in last min its very likely to be flawed....but you still defend a lack from my perspective

Yeah I feel ya. I also hate to have features in my adventure games that should be a problem to pass by the normal functionality of your body, but aren't, like falling from 10+ feet just to lose 10% of your hit points that regen back in few seconds anyway.
I also hate to be limited to few select classes on the race I want to play just because of lore.
But I'll also get over these issues if the game is good. Might be a good idea for all of us to practice that kind tolerance.

Oh look, another 'go play something else if you don't think this wonderful game is perfect' post.
People have a right to express concerns about games here.
Perhaps the posts on the official forum would appeal to you more?
Invisible walls and lack of jumping do hurt immersion.

Nope.
I think that in this case, the developers know it better than we, ignorant ones, do.
And currently, their answer is "no."
So coming here and making an argument on the topic is silly at best.
I shouldn't reply to this one, but...
What made you think jumping annoys me? I don't care.
And holy crap we are about to beat a dead horse here, doesn't sound like a good idea.
Its not about knowing better, its about being to lazy to filter out area bugs that may occur.
Edit: I think it annoys you because you are against it. I can't see any other reason.
Apparently. Maybe someday you can? Good luck!
Why don't you explain it then? Unless you are discussing just for the sake of having a discussion.
Pretty much... and believe me, this is not the first time on these forums that we're having this particular discussion.
If you dig deep enough, you can find a thread (or 5?) solely about jumping and I've probably posted there as well. We're going through the same things, pretty much. I just can't be assed to repeat it again.
I can even tell what your next reply will be, and next, and next.. /bleh

There is no point in adding jumping into a game where it is not required/ used for travel or exploration purposes, see SWG.
SWG had/has a jump emote that shows your character leaping into the air, it's amusing but has no value, you can't go over objects, only around them.
As stupid as SOE is, sometime around NGE they made jump a default keyboard command, set to spacebar.
But, you still can't actually jump, it still is just an emote, and it is annoying as hell and pretty dumb imo.
I would much rather have a game with no jumping, than one where you can jump, but it is not usefull; i.e. not possible to jump over anything.
So unless they have designed the game world to allow for jumping, they better not just toss it in randomly to please a handfull of people.
