Rift: Planes of Telara: Class Teaser: The Ranger

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

The folks at Trion have decided to reveal the classes for the upcoming MMORPG Rift: Planes of Telara. Today, we start with The Ranger.

Rangers are consummate hunters who know the strengths and weaknesses of every beast, taming animal companions to augment their considerable prowess in ranged combat. This synergy between bow and beast allows Rangers to handily overcome the most daunting obstacles.

Read Class Teaser: The Ranger.

That's all? No video? Just one little paragraph that sort of tells me this is a pet class?

A tad dissapointing. We wants more!

While we're at it, might as well preview every other tired D&D archetype class...

I'm not liking the design of this game at all so far.  It's basically: "Let's produce the same MMO that's been produced 100 times, but with a slight twist (the rift system)."

So once you get tired of running out to rifts in order to kill 1 of 5 sets of randomly generated mobs, all starting with minions and ending with a boss mob - then what?  What does the game offer that others don't?

Not to just jump on your post, but the game's biggest draw is the dynamic world system. Basically your actions are going to affect the world. In big ways. The example given was something like, you are tasked with saving the village which has been set on fire. If you succeed, you save the town, get rewarded, get access to npcs etc. If you fail, that village is gone. No reward, no quest hub, no npc's. Real consequences for real actions.

At least that's the gist of what has been released so far. Seeing how it is implemented will be the true test.

Well it should be similar to GW2 in terms of dynamic content. Trion were talking about it nearly a year ago, but have been emphasizing the rift bit lately. Supposedly there will be a 'unique' class system. Regardless we'll see soon enough - supposedly they'll talk about the latter at E3. I do hope it's not just the same as every old MMO...

E3 is 15-17 June 2010 I believe (to the poster before the one I quoted).

This game looks promising!  Massively wrote up something nice on it as well.  http://www.massively.com/2010/04/26/massivelys-hands-on-look-at-rift-planes-of-telara/

I checked out their website, but it does not have a lot of info on it yet.  Maybe they are waiting for E3 to get out the news and help the community grow.

As someone who plays a ranger I am not fond of games that make a ranger a pet class. I hope they are more of a small added bonus to damage and not like a summoner type class where you have to have your pet out to be useful.

I don't know much about this game, it looks very nice but following a 2011 release too closely leads to madness. But so far it could be a good game.

Ugh sounds like they are going to be hunters aka pet class. Lame. Should start saying i want an ARCHER class, maybe devs will get the idea.

    how original

As much as people like to bash Aion, I think they did the Ranger class fairly well there. Snare arrows, DoT arrows and a few quick type shots. Though the whole jumpshotting was awkard and unusal, but they didnt have a pet!

What did they call it? Ranger? How did they come up with that?! That's so awesome! These guys are crazy!

They should make a class that serves some kind of weird fantasy God and uses maces and staves and heals people, and a class that's sneaky and uses knives, and a class that wears heavy armor and uses big weapons

OH MAN, WHAT IF THEY PUT A WIZARD TYPE DEAL IN AN MMO?! WOULDN'T THAT BE INSANE?!

I'm so pumped for this game!!!

    dude

I hope people aren't complaining about the name... There is another thread here where someone is whinging because one of the classes doesn't have a 'standard' name, so you can't win in this area. ;) I can understand if the mechanics seem boring or 'same old same old', be we honestly don't know much other than this being a 'ranged' class that seems to have pets. In 7 days we should start getting some more detailed info which will make it easier to quantify your whinging. :p The devil is in the details, and there aren't many in a teaser.

I love the people, and there are a lot of them, who constantly complain about "oh another same old boring fantasy mmo with the same old classes, whoopety doo.", and then proceed to make proclamations of failure based entirely on the IP.  Guess what, this game is going to be succesful. Why? you might ask. Three reasons:  1. A very diverse, extremely experienced team is designing. 2. The game is not being designed to be a WOW killer, and the investors are fully aware of that and OK with it (this means no rushed releases prematurely killing a game, like Vanguard). 3. It isn't trying to fix what isn't broken.

WOW has proven that there is still a market for "the same ole fantasy elements", What they're doing is taking things that are proven and work, and the majority of the MMO playerbase (which isn't well represented on these forums, mind you) likes, and using what works and innovating where they should be.  Before WOW came along, MMO's were moving towards non static worlds, thats what all the devs were talking about what they wanted in next gen mmos.  That all got sidetracked by WOW coming along and making things so casual that they brought in an all new playerbase.  This resulted in the investors, who have only 1 thing they care about, which is getting a return on their investment, SALIVATING at the idea that an mmo could eat a chunk out of the WOW pie.

Several AAA games that could have been fuck awesome fell to the hands of greed, Vanguard and AoC are example.  Both games that if had not been released early and been fleshed out and released with advertised content and features, would have been STUPIDLY succesful.  AoC had over a million box sales, if it had been like other MMO's and kept about 70-75% of that playerbase it would of been the second most succesful mmo after WOW.  Vanguard had a similar issue, sold over 600k, but only kept around 30%.

The guys at Trion developing Rift: PoT are playing it smart, they have a team of developers who are part pc devs and part console (console devs are used to working within a strict time/resource budget), they have investors who are aware that the game IS NOT going to generate 10 million subs.  They've already made statements that if they acheived 1 million subs that would be 100% success for their goals.  Given that i can bet there are at least 500 thousand core mmo'ers still out their just jonesin for a game that isnt a fucking hand held playground like WOW, which offers some form of challenge, grouping, etc.  Combine that with the number of people who are becoming disillusioned with WOW and i can say that i wouldnt be surprised to see this game acheive that 1 million sub goal, assuming of course they deliver on promises and release a quality product.

Now, yes, there are going to be other AAA games to compete with, IMO FFXIV is going to be the only real competition. The new Star Wars mmo is looking like its shaping up to to be an overglorified single player game, with very few actual MMO elements to it, and even if it does manage to bring an MMO feel it still from all early reports is going to be WOW easy if not easier.  So in all honesty that will appeal to a different demographic and won't really be competing with Rift.

FFXIV will compete to some extent, though being a JRPG is going to appeal to a different demographic as well, although i think there is a lot more overlap between the demographics of people who would play rift and ffxiv than between SW and Rift.
