Rift: Planes of Telara: First Look at the Ranger

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

The folks at Trion have decided to reveal the classes for the upcoming MMORPG Rift: Planes of Telara. Today, we start with The Ranger.

image

Our preview of Rift classes kicks off this week with a look at the Ranger. Classically designed through game philosophy the Ranger is the ultimate Hunter. If playing a ranged or pet class is your particular style of gameplay than look no further. Rangers have always held a close spot in many gamer’s hearts as mythical heroes the likes Robin Hood. Woodsman, archer, hunter, and tamer of beasts all make the Ranger a fun class in any game.

Trion continues to provide us with a preview of the Rift classes as we get close to E3 next week. Below read the write up of the Ranger class and get ready for more next week when we are on hand to check out Rift in person.

Elven archers with companion pets.. seems like I've seen this before somewhere...

If you ask, maybe they can rename it to Gelblaster and it can do ranged attacks via tiny pieces of gel which are tasty but will cause you to keep eating the pieces of gel until you can no longer move. That might be unique?

It does look like a fairly 'standard' ranged pet class, but I like the lore around it. Can't wait to read more about the lore...

too bad rangers are a pretty standard thing in most MMOs and way before WoW. You really cant change the fact of what a ranger is...

Well, I loved WOW's hunter class, and I'll be looking forward to playing a Ranger in Rift!    The environment will be a fantastic place to hunt and explore.

By the way the class is explained, it seems a lot more dependant on their pet to be able to survive, but that's just me. Either way, since it's a heavily fantasy themed MMO, you need a non-magical ranged class. They could cover up the familiar look by giving it another name but I don't think it would fool anybody.

Don't really care about the whinging hate fanbois, nice contribution claps all round.

Anyone who releases a decent MMO world to play in can only be good. It is all about the game and the content. World view looks expansive good distance on the shots.

Could be a nice game to play. Looking forward to more updates....

Lets see the game and the gameplay before you try to compare, implimented right a ranger/scot class can be a fantastic Clas type.

WoW may be succesfull , but it is easy. New developers do not have to go too far to innovate within the standard MMO classes. It hasn't added much to the genre other than taking existing ideas and introducing easy mode , some people like it some don't.

I agree.  No hunters in Rift.  No mages, either.  No warriors.  Been there, done that a thousand times.  No priests, necromancers, warlocks, paladins or rogues.  In fact, enough already with the elves and orcs and things with heads and arms legs and stuff.  I mean, seriously; it's like every mmo has creatures with a mouth.  What copy cats.

Let's REALLY create unique fantasy.  Let's do phased, formless, asexual color-based races who do battle with phonetics and music.

Crap, that's a bard.  Making MMO's is haaaaard!

I lol'd myself until milk came out my nose., wait "lolumcomn" NEW ACRONYM!

I get a kick out of the angry posters and their wow comparison, usually its the same people that swear Warhammer stole WoW's art, or that WoW created the theme-based questing system. Guess they never heard of pen&paper RPG games of past like D&D and Warhammer, or the fact EQ and UO existed WELL before WoW, oh well you live & you learn.

Rifts is looking interesting, can't wait to hear more.

too bad rangers are a pretty standard thing in most MMOs and way before WoW. You really cant change the fact of what a ranger is...

Strider or Aragorn or whatever was a Ranger long before D&D and he didn't have any pets. Well, he had a horse...

Of course everyone looks back to what came before, they are called archetypes.

But there are many different variations on the same archetypes. I'm sure there are plenty of ways to do a Ranger that don't involve using long ranged weapons and having a pet.

I tend to think of Rangers as being more stealthy rogue types, part tracker and part hunter. Not a stand up archer with a pet.

I for one am sick and tired of the "tried and true" variations of the archetypes that they seem to use with EVERY new fantasy MMO. Give us a new mechanic or a new variation on the archetype, tie it into your lore, don't be lazy and take the "D&D and WoW and everything else do it this way so we will too!" approach.

In fact it makes more sense for a Wizard to have a pet companion if you think about it. Why would a animal ever want to stick with a person who spends their days killing and skinning/eating other animals? Why don't we have dogs in MMOs? I mean seriously it's the only "pet" a true hunter would ever have. Wolves don't count.

BTW good job missing the fact I've been playing MMOs since before most of you kids probably got rid of all your baby teeth.

Actually, there has been a lot of variety in the ranger class over  the past couple decades. Definitely not as much as some of the other classes, but certainly not every ranger is the same as WoW's hunter.

The hunter plays very differently from LotRO's hunter

Look @ GW's ranger vs. FFXI's ranger, or even EQIIs ranger.

Some play like machine gun-toting dps machines. Others are more slow, careful, and persistant. Some are buff heavy, who take more preparation, while some play closer to a mage (glass canon) ie LotRO.

I would personally like to see more games trying to do something new with this class. The Ranger is a very versatile class, and doesn't need to play like Legolas everytime.

Or rather than putting players on rails that follow the same patterns as every other game on the market, how about putting out a game with interesting skills and the freedom to develop what you want to play?

There is so much griping about the Holy Trinity and a hunger for something different -- yet when a developer takes the easy route and literally copies what's already there, people like you jump right in to defend them.  This lets the industry continue to stagnate.

I will most likely play Rifts.  I do like the lore and graphics, as well as the rifts themselves.  But gameplay is going to have to be incredible to make up for the feeling of simply rehashing what I've already done with my characters in other games.  If not, I'll be jumping to GW2 in short order.

    Just remember:

    Before WOW

The earth was without form and void!!!

Gary Gygax was never born, D&D was never invented

    JRR Tolkien never created orcs

as all classes and races were created by Blizzard

And according to WOW nuthers MMORPG's must be locked in place with the phrase

"Its just a copy of WOW"

I could say the same thing about WoW. Guess who "invented" ranged pet classes in an MMO? Oh yea, it's called DARK AGE OF CAMELOT. Ever heard of the "Hunter" in daoc before? WoW literally RIPPED the hunter class from DAOC. So stop and check yourself before you start comparing this game to WoW.

This game looks more of a copy on UO + Daoc.....which I like the looks of it, however I'm still madly sceptical given my past with Alpha/Beta testing only to see the game burn in an eteranl hellfire once they pickup a publisher.

Well the game's name will be changing pending the lawsuit from palladium publishing, and I can't say I disagree with that action by palladium, I'm a long time Rifts*tm player and am anxiously waiting for a rifts based game to come out that isn't only on a cell phone that died.  I'm so much of a fan that I wouldn't care if it lasted 3 months and was worse than the initial launch of world of warcraft with every server problem they had that should have stopped them dead cold immediately(and sometimes wish it had).  This game looks good, graphically that screen looks better than some I've seen, but that's a hq uber shot.  For the record, if your comparing any *NEW* MMO to any existing franchise you HAVE to compare it to the 1st release of said game.  Aion's launch was the smoothest of any P2P MMO in history, but people were bashing it because it couldn't stack up to world of warcraft on some points but world of warcraft was being compared in it's current state.  People who bash and never play or keep bashing after playing because it's not as good will miss out on games that have all the capability and potential to rock better than the others and they fall to the wayside because something else has the bar set too high and people are consistantly dropping off and new are coming on because what drew the initial croud(some of them) has left world of warcraft entirely.  I'm not saying I want a really difficult game that takes a while to level in for the casual player, but I don't want to go BOOM max level 3 weeks in playing casually also.  Unless you make a modern or some other game non fantasy or based on an existing world, like palladium fantasy or rifts, or vampire the masquerade you're gonna have to do some major work to create new classes that truly become unique.  wracking my brain for a few minutes and I can't even think of a class that hasn't been done in some form or another.  The only thing I can think of would be a class based around engineering that instead of using guns or bombs or turrets created steampunk armor to pilot.  NO guarantees that hasn't been done.  But this game looks interesting but I don't want to add another game to my stack of I could resubscribe to it but... pile.
