Have you actually played that combat system, though. Having a slower combat system can make for a more skilful battle, many games by attempting to be fast end up merely mashing of buttons with very little skill beyond that.

Meh, blabla same boring arguments as in the last year.
Doubters will get to see for themselves, and if they're not horribly biased against anything Final Fantasy, they'll see how good/bad it is.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Exactly, I give up trying to convince those that don't understand. I will say though that from what we're seeing that if you don't like how FFXI played, FFXIV appears to be extremely similar for now, and you may not ever like it.
Let me start by saying that I loved FFXI and the new combat video for FFXIV looks great.
Unlike FFXI, where the combat was paced in a manner that neither keyboard or controller users had an advantage..... it seems clear that keyboard/mouse is going to have an advantage.
If you have to scroll up/down/sidways to get to a skill, you will not be faster than someone using the keystroke. Especially people, like me, who use a G13 gamepad. In alpha, the combat was slow enough where it didnt' matter. The combat is much better looking now, but it seems like I'll be forced to use a keyboard to become optimal, though I enjoyed using a controller more in FFXI.
Or, I'm completely guessing as to how it plays....(either way, i'm still worried, ever so slightly).

The reason why I hated FFXI. Square punished pc players for peoples like you who don't bother to get a keyboard. Seriously how hard it is to put a keyboard into your console? An entire game become unplayable only because of that reason.

I see this worry often from console players. I don't get it.
Does no-one else use the macro system to quickly access the spells and abilities they need during battle? You can hit them just as quickly as a PC player with a little practice.
Looking at the new Beta combat video, the action is much faster. It is faster than being able to scroll to your next ability. A person using a keyboard and mouse will have a distinctive advantage.
Pressing the number 5 on the keyboard is easier/faster then scrolling to the number 5 ability using a controller. That's the issue. For people who want to play to their best ability are forced to use a keyboard and mouse even though it is designed for a controller as well.
As to the argument of "get a keyboard for your PS," I have to do that anyway to be able to chat. That doesn't solve the problem of not using the controlloer to play the game does it?
In FFXI, the combat was spaced in a way where there was no distinct advantage whether you CHOSE to use a controller or keyboard. I LOVED the controller. But, FXIV looks to be considerably faster with way more abilities at your disposal than FFXI.
The problem remains, given the speed of combat, that a keyboard user will be more efficient and faster in their response time compared to a controller user who has to scroll to each ability. And no, macros won't help because you hve to scroll to the macro as well to be able to use it. A keyboard user can do both without any repercusions.
And what about the fact that I use a G13 gamepad. Which has a thumbstick. That's even more of an advantage compared to a controller user.
Bottom line, I want to use a controller and not feel i'm giving up skill based on the speed of combat.

I think your fear is unfounded. FFXI worked better with a controller. The difference with the keyboard is you made personal macros. I played with both at times and found they are about equal. Besides, you don't really know how it will play with the PS3 controller but I'm sure it will be as good if not better than FFXI. Really need to just wait and play once it launches then you will know. Getting cold feet now is just silly.
As long as your stamina gauge is constantly below 100% it doesn't matter whether you're playing with a pad or a keyboard.
Since when you scroll through actions your stamina gauge keeps regening at the same time, so there's not any "wasted" time as long as your stamina gauge doesn't cap out in the meantime. Which is not likely at least after getting used to it and setting your skills correctly.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Things to note: There is a separate bar for "Traits" probably like in XI, but now it seems you can take traits from many classes as you wish. Oookay
Then there is the fact that the skill Rousing Provoke has "Earth affinity 10" listed and is an "Optimal skill". Whatever these mean, we'll sooner or later find out!

If your lazy use a controller, if not use a keyboard and mouse. If you want to get the most out of fast paced games then this is the setup I use.
Razer Naga:
Keyboard: Wolfking Timberwolf
and my G13
Why should a controller be able to keep up with this setup? I went out and bought these, learned to use them etc.
In the end though... what does it matter? It's FF, not like there will be PvP lol at least not any that will matter.
So far, so good. The quality of the videos we've seen from E3 are terrible though. Waiting for some HD not handycam gameplay.
SE sucks at PR. If they did it right we'd see combat featuring some huge-ass boss they have planned in a group vs group setting with actual professional presenters instead of these "lol im trying it for the first time lol" noobs that don't know how to engage the Dodo.
Well, hype stays in a reasonable level at least >_>

LMAO you have more peripherals than you have arms!
There is such as thing as TOO much interface...it becomes cumbersome. Engineerings use a system called HOTAS (hands-on Stick and Throttle) when setting up the controls that a Fighter Pilot uses in Combat.
It is universally accepted that the more his hands have to leave these to control interfaces, the more attention the Pilot must pay to there his hands need to go... and that means less attention on the hostile trying to kill him (or perhaps losing sight of the target he's trying to engage).
Unless, of course, you have a third arm...I which point, you are probably the deadliest MoFo in the game :-)

In other news, GT has posted two gameplay videos on it's site; combat and character creation walkthrough.

Another gameplay vid, this time Lancer. The combat speed on 2h is pretty much like WoW's 2h speed so shut the hell up about the combat speed already.
Also why the heck do the players not know how to play the game? Look at the dodo for 5 more minutes please, engaging is for pussies.
...Anyway!
