Why do you play Age of Conan?

LuckyDuckyLuckyDucky Member UncommonPosts: 268

Personally I am not playing the game because it is an MMO. In fact I am playing AoC in spite of the fact that it is an MMO. I started this game up because I really wanted to play a Conan game, and AoC seems like the best one out right now.

I haven't been playing very long. I started with the free trial and built up 3 or 4 characters before settling on my Conqueror. I subscribed, entered the main game,  and right now he is lvl 24.

I am not really a huge MMO buff, which makes me something of an anomaly around here, but I did play WoW for a few months around launch time. Until starting up AoC that was the first and last time I played any MMO.

The appeal for me is playing in the Conan universe. I really wanted to play a game based on Howard's work and this is the one I picked.  The more  AoC captures the Conan aura the more I will enjoy playing it. Of course the game is an MMO first and foremost, so that means grouping, questing, PvPing, dungeon crawling, grinding and all the rest, but the main draw for me is playing in Hyboria.

Along with playing AoC I am reading Howard's Conan stories, really getting into the lore. I have The Bloody Crown of Conan which is a collection of   3 original stories. I am big into Conan right now, reading the books and playing AoC!

    Ok, here's my reasons:

    - the Conan setting is great: I love how they tried to capture the rawness of Conan's world in the quests and brutal imagery of the world, you can even pick up some of the Lovecraft influences => Robert Howard's Hyboria is situated in the same universe as for which Lovecraft wrote his Cthulhu mythos-stories.

    - Graphics are among the very best of any MMO's: very detailed, highly textured and not cartoony as a number of the other prime MMO's. AoC's graphics are very distinctive from the other MMO's. Walk around in AoC in DX10 and you encounter many awesome sceneries.

    - melee combat: simply some of the best and most engaging combat I've encountered in any of the MMO's I played. The positioning to maximize your damage, trying to align your combos to the weak spots of the mobs where they haven't shielded themselves well, the visceral feel of the hacking and slashing, the brutally awesome fatalities that become more and more varied with the more levels you gain,  all these things work together to make the melee combat a highly enjoyable experience.

    - guilds, community, friends: the server(s) I'm playing on, I like it how there's all kinds of events being organized by the community. Overall it's a friendly, constructive bunch to hang out with and do stuff with together, whether it's raids, sieges, PvP, dungeons, or even joining the events that are happening. I like it.

    - Khitai: at the moment I like exploring the RotGS expansion and trying out the new dungeons and new mechanics in them. They did a great job with this expansion

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's

Meh, I'll just go with this. Pretty much sums up my reasons as well.

-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.-

Ah, yea the graphics are very good, not only for an MMO but any open world RPG! I have a pretty good rig to play it ; i7 920, 6gigs of ram, Win 7 64. I am some what behind the curve as far as a video card. I am using a dated ATI 4850 512mb. It does fine with DX 9, but I tried pushing DX10 and it turned into a slide show. If I really start liking the game I will upgrade to something that can handle DX10 a little better. But DX9 doesn't look too shabby and I can run the game with most the sliders maxed out and still keep the FPS around 40 or higher.

The combat really is pretty cool. You have to pay close attention to your opponent to get the combos and massive damage going on. If I get too tired I don't play well, it takes alertness and concentration to carry on well in combat!

So far I think Funcom did a good job in capturing the world of Conan, it is much the way I imagine it when reading the stories. From what I have read around the web the expanision area does an even better job of it.

This is a very good summary of AoC's strengths. I am a big literature buff so I also enjoy the references that AoC puts in towards Howard's novels as well. Most importantly the game is fun.

because its the only mmo I have FUN!!!! in

  • DrowNobleDrowNoble Member UncommonPosts: 1,297

First and foremost I been playing AoC because of the links to Howard's original stories.  Funcom did a great job staying true to the stories and ignoring the terrible Ar-Nuld movie adaptations.  Though in Ymir's Pass they did put it a nod to the movies, which was ok by me.  No matter how great the graphics, gameplay or whatever if this game wasn't true to the original stories I would never have subcribed.

Second, the melee combat is very enjoyable.  So often companies throw around the word "innovative" but Funcom really made something good here.  No auto-attack makes the combat fast pased and fun.  Unlike That Other Game, I don't mindlessly spam 1 or 2 hotkeys, I actually have to pay attention and react to how the mob (or player) is reacting to my attacks.  Course the fatalities also have something to do with that too.

Next, I also like how the classes are well done.  Some other games if you spec a certain way you're gimped.  Each class here can solo well (some better than others) if you want to while bringing something to the group.  There is no "we need Class X" moments like in Certain Other Games.

Great storytelling, fun combat, motion captured graphics all make for a great game IMO.

    Not sure really.

This game has less features and content than other mmos, community isnt all that great atleast on fury it isnt.

    Class balance isn't great.

    Quite laggy at times

But for some reason i can play this near to 24/7.

The combat system and the theme of the game are so cool that I dont even care about the negative points.

Kind of makes the bad community a +ve factor, can meet that annoying prick somewhere in the world and rip his head off with a fatality.

The combat feels so real and tactical.  It is definetely "easy to pick up and hard to master" type of combat mechanics.

    The music.

    The graphics.

The Challenge.  You will die, and you will die regularly.  This is not an easy game....it's not carebear PvE wise and ona pvp servier it is even more brutal.

Best way to describe AoC is that it is a very mature game in terms of content, mechanics, and difficulty.

For those on the fence in trying it out, do the free trial.   I've been playing the expansion and absolutely love it.  But, try to have a really nice computer to play it.  The better computer you have the more in "awe" you will be of the games graphics.

Preferably a card that is Directx10 compatible.  Love Godrays.

IMO...best MMO I've played.  I love the lore above all, and on the Cimmeria server there is a great, and very large, RP community....I'm an RPer so I'm lovin it.

A bit buggy and laggy at times, but the gameplay (quests, raids, combat, classes) is just awesome.  Graphics dont matter much to me, but damn this game is beautiful!

And the gankers......I love the gankers....they make the game fun and add an element to the game that can keep you on the edge of your seat because you just never know when they're gonna strike....it gives it that unpredictable brutality that defines Hyboria.

    PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM

Seriously, that is the single dumbest reason i have ever read. I have been a rpg player all my life. I even played zelda, a link to the past WHEN IT FIRST HIT THE STORES. They didn´t even have Dinosaurs back then.  How can you dwell on 1 universe that long? You could just watch the movie just over and over you know.......

almalexius ; you talk as if having played Zelda: A Link to the Past when it debuted as if that qualifies you as "old school" or something.  Perhaps I and others are showing our age when it comes to experience gaming.  Experience and perspective are relative I suppose, but I simply have to laugh when someone makes a statement like that, or even worse, when implying they are old school by having played Final Fantasy 7 when it first hit store shelves.  There was no reason to jump on anyone's case about their reason for playing a particular game.  You disagree, so be it.  No wonder the state of games is deteriorating as it has over the last several years.

You talk like you are some kind of intellectual, knowing exactly what i said but you don't. I simply said that any mmo around the conan universe will get boring and simply saying you are playing this game because of conan is bound to be the wrong reason. It will not last.

I find it interesting that you know what reasons someone else uses will be sustaining or not.  So because another person's reasons are agaisnt your own, therefore he will get bored fo the game?

If the man loves Conan and everything Hyboria, that's all the more reason he'll likely stay for the long run.  It's funny why you took offense for someone else's reason for playing a game.

It's like saying to someone else, "Your love for Vanilla Ice Cream is stupid and not sustainable."

I am the OP and the main reason I am playing the game is the fact it is based on Howard's writings, the Conan lore. I am not playing it because of the MMO structure, although I don't mind it. I am playing it because it  brings the stories to life in a way I can actually participate in. It is experiencing Conan in an interactive venue with much of the universe faithfully represented. If you are in the mood for Conan this game is a blast! If you are not, then I suppose AoC is just another MMO with an interesting combat system and good looking graphics. Being a Conan aficionado gives the game a depth and appreciation that would be lacking otherwise.

As far as lasting, any game will become boring if you play it long enough. I expect to play AoC  for as long as it holds my interest, might be weeks or maybe months. I played WoW at launch for about 9 months, thought it was a great game. Was my first ever MMO and I found the whole concept of an open world filled with other players a stunning experience. But I am done with it, and don't see myself ever playing it again. I don't expect AoC to last me as far as the eye can see either, I will play it as long as I  appreciate it, then I will move on.

I play it for the visuals and the combat. Best combat of any mmo that I've played, the melee combat anyway.

  • slim26slim26 Member UncommonPosts: 645

I play it because it  is better than any other MMO thats out, pure common fucking sence. Should be MMO of the year but nooo WoW must have that "tag" everytime, and that is some serious bulll shit to me. WoW is a good MMO  but got  nothing on AoC, not one damn thing. Now here come TerA-GW2-RIFT-SWTOR and WoW will manage to still be lead MMO with the same outdated ass graphics and everything else in it, and that is the pure truth.

  • ValentinaValentina Member RarePosts: 2,108

I play it because it's probably one of the best MMO's made. It's the only MMO that has a truly imerssive storyline and world.

I like how interactive it is, as well. Everything from the combat to the dialogue.

I played AoC for a few months before (beta) and after launch, and I WANTED to love it.  But a well-rounded game it is not.  There's no PvP to really speak of.  I know I know, it's not a PvP game, but I don't have the time to play 1 PvE game and 1 PvP game.  My MMO of choice needs to do both well, and AoC simply drops the ball any time they get near PvP.

Have you tried the AoC  Tyraney  server? It is all PvP all the time. You can't even quest alone on that server, you will be ganked before you know it.

I really only hoped on since the EXP but other than that i have been loving this mmo. There's a grind just like in every mmo but they really try to mask it well with how the quest are delivered and executed. Today was the birth of my Dt reaching level 80 and im excited an all but i all of a sudden know theres more content with the Tiger and Wolf factions (and more) and the level 80-85 mob's and all the 6-12 dungeons and raids. On a side note i was struck by Funcom's choice of not lack of variety amongst gear and weapons but the epic look of them. Blood something was the name of my level 80 raid tier(2) one hand sword and it really looked BUT compared my lower level epic, actually i believe if im not mistaken that its just the stats being thrown on random gear than it being pre set on it already. It doesnt really bother me that much because most of my gear was crafted by my guild for either resources or recipes.
