CCP employee, Torfi Frans Olafson, stated during the streamed Tourney coverage that Incarna will have a soft rollout, does this mean Incarna is coming soon, for them to be planning how to roll it out?
It was originally scheduled for the winter 2010 release too.
Hmmmmmm
Edit: added the actual eployees name.
F2P/P2P excellent thread.

I can't wait to walk around in space stations!!
Incarna is supposed to be the second xpac of the year but with all the lag and bullshit dominion stirred up who the hell knows.
Im sure most people would rather CCP fix Eve before they add something the magnitude of Incarna.
I hope it comes out soon, but it's been about to come out for years now. I like EVE, but it takes CCP forever to get anything done.
Well they do release two xpacs a year. thats a pretty good dev cycle.
Incarna could break eve i would rather them take their time.
We'll see it when we see it. It's been "nearly ready" for so long now. It was "nearly ready" when I started playing in 2006 ffs.
Give me liberty or give me lasers
This is what I'm talking about. It's part of the reason I started playing, because I wanted a space game, but I also wanted to play as a person. They also said that Dust 514 was supposed to be out this year and I don't see how, but they may surprise us yet.
Dunno who "they" is, but CCP have never announced any kind of date for Dust-514 AFAIK.
Give me liberty or give me lasers
there were a few screenshots of maya renders of heads nothing that amazing.. he did say that the first part of incarna would be the character customization.
Everyone will be able to create the actual avatar, what was interesting is he said there would be no sliders, it sounded like you would push and pull the face to change the features.
If the first release has actual walking around it remains to be seen.
I hope we see a little more at gamescon in August
They specifically said that the fanfest was pushed back to march 2011 to make time for Incarna. For me that means we will see the first part of Incarna before the fanfest.

Personally though I see no point with Incarna, see it as only causing additional problems by a game becoming falling further under the malaise of growth on a single shard, and did I mention see no point to it given it breaking game lore et al...
...I cannot wait for it to come out either.
Yes, it is one of those wagging finger told you so things that I am looking forward to....
Will be interesting to see all the folks that are not satisfied too - will make me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Heck, think of the possibilities though, eh?
Check out the red carpet at Alliance Tournament IX... you thought those Frekis in AT8 were expensive, check out the outfits on Lalph Rauren as their team makes their way down the carpet! OMFG, I wants... uh huh, yeah.
Kind of ticks me off about one of those nerdragequit moments I had where I deleted everything - would have been interesting to have actually been able to see the janitors clean up after the homeless, eh? Or perhaps find some proper functional uses for the Exotic Dancers or that odd Frozen Corpse we all have hidden away...ahem.

Felt the need to add more along the lines of what I mean by people being disappointed.
Are they looking for custom costumes where they can have a wardrobe of multiple things to wear? Are they looking to be able to hold objects - from a long stemmed rose to a cup of Quafe or even a doll? What kind of emotes? Do they want objects they will be able to interact with? Do they want to be able to sit, to lie down, look at themselves in a mirror?
What do they want to be able to do with their human avatars and will they just be happy with a 3D version of their picture?

Think of all the highsec wardec "victims" that have been stuck looking at a spinning ship all these years. Now they can get out and spin their avatar!
Joking aside, I think the feature could go toward increasing immersion for a number of players who just have trouble relating to a spaceship and portrait. It's one of those features that you don't ever have to use so, if it's not something a particular person likes, they can pretty much pretend it isn't there. Unless you are forced to get our of your ship for some reason or another which would be odd. One thing is for sure, shortly before, during, and after implementation, players will find ways to use it to scam each other
edit: as for the subject....I'll believe it when it's deployed. I'm anxious to check it out and see what is implemented, but been hearing about it so long, I've developed a "meh" attitude about release date speculation :P

Sometimes you need to get offline, to get things done... Things you don't want to register on any network.
Hrm. I hope it just means some friendly in-station gambling.
Though you say all joking aside, face it - that is what some people see this as offering. The blogs, the posts, etc - all talk about it offering some great immersion - but to me that would mean being able to do something, no?
For the most part, it literally does come off as the ability to spin the avatar - or instead of seeing the picture of the person while you are having a convo, you will be looking up and down from their avatar to the convo or simply ignoring the avatar to carry on the convo...
I'm all for it if it meaningful and CCP does something about the load issues folks are complaining more and more about so it does not make things worse... but if it ends up being spinning avatars instead of twiddling thumbs and makes the load worse... nope, stupid, fluff, garbage...etc, in my not usually in the least humble opinon.
Oh yeah, I'm also interested in how they get around the lore thing - cause that will say a great deal about CCP; whether they go with another cop out do as we say or if turns out to be a damn, look at those guys rock this hardcore...
As for it being sooner than later, lol - yeah, have to agree they have some heavy things on their plates at the moment leading to a later.
Still, make some popcorn - open a fresh soda - watch AT8 qualifiers on YouTube over and over again... it is better than spinning a ship in a station...heh.

I think we will have to wait and see what the purpose really is in terms of the over all game design. It may expand on the universe of New Eden in the ways that apply with the new Eden lore, which could translate into gameplay. Other than that I think it will have the social elements with mini games and player owned content on stations. I think the community will really add some creative direction for CCP once we see how the first stage will evolve the game. I know I am wishing for players to walk around on player owned asteroid bases one day. I just don't expect the game to ever have kill 10 rats and go to azeroth-lol
It is kind of funny reading some of the early dev stuff on it, because most of it fit into the PvP theme of EVE - the devs wanted to blow folks up - not their ships - but the capsuleeers, lol.
Is that why it bothers me then? This could be the first non-PvP aspect in EVE....

Bar fights please? Yeah yeahhhhhhhhh!
Wasn't AoC supposed to have them? Do what Funcom couldn't!
They had already mentioned the reason that combat had been ruled out was the combination of Concord and being outside the pod left one susceptible to permanent death...
...which really leaves me interested in seeing how they get around that.

See, I would think clones would get around perma-death. Sure there would be some t's to cross and i's to dot, but the concept is still basic enough.
Personally, I think walking around should be like being in space. Some stations have a higher "police" presence and the risk/response of doing something is factored accordingly. I'm not a big fan of just not being able to do something. Of course, the first few days of walking around would basically be throw away characters ganking everyone who got out of their pods :P.
As far as my earlier comment about spinning in stations, sure, for some people it will be just that. But, the underlying point is, for some people, a feature like this would make the game. How many threads have people commented on where they say they just can't get into "being a ship"? I look at it like mining. Some people like it. I know a few people who fleet up and go mine and they enjoy their time. Me? I'd get bored of that pretty quick, but I have other things I can do for fun. Incarna could very well be someone else's "other thing".

Being in the pods is what allows the backup of your character up to the point of your death to be installed in the clone if it has sufficient skill points to accept that transfer. (I highly recommend always making sure that if you get podded that you make absolutely sure that you purchase a new new clone before leaving and the clone has sufficient SP for your character - no rushing out for vengeance.) Lol, sorry about that - but during FW sometime back, in my hurry to get back I fat fingered which clone I bought on my way out and ended up losing around 1.3m SP.
I have posted in a few threads on the "being in a ship" thing, and my views are kind of jaded against the need for a humanoid avatar. I see the ship as my avatar. I change ships like I might change armor or gear on another character. I do not run around naked in other games...I do not run around "naked" in EVE. Still, I accept that for some people that they want what I consider fluff. CCP has said that Incarna will not require any changes for those people that do not want to get out of their ship, but I do not believe them...lol. Aside from the possibility of not being able to interact with some terminal in the player stores from the terminal in my ship (have to figure this is going to be part of the economy), my main concern involves whether CCP has the hardware to handle it - people have had different tolerances for the lag in the game, some started complaining years ago while others have started complaining recently - and I have to wonder about the additional load people being "social" will have on the system - not only with rendering of it all, but with the increased number of people that will remain logged in - the new people that will come to play 3D chat in space - etc. If the lag/latency/etc issues were not what they are, then it would be less of a factor - and it could simply be filed away as something that does not affect those not interested in it...but alas...
And lol, as far as mining - I have not really mined since the change to cans so long ago. Still, I mainly had fun while mining by killing rats with a peashooter on the hauler or with drones. Heh, no - I did not mine in either low or null sec. It did not take long though where it became pointless to try to mine...bots galore, oh well. Left me missing the days of the suicide Kestrels...

Don't get me wrong, I understand the current concept/implementation of cloning. My thoughts are that, as a generic mechanic, it could be adaptable to Incarna. For example, imagine a headline, "Poteque Pharmaceuticals revolutionizes remote clone knowledge synchronization: details details details".
As far as CCP making it something you don't "have to" do; I believe them. I mean, Wormholes were introduced and I don't "have to" do anything with them to still enjoy the results of others exploiting what is available there. As for lag/latency/etc, I can't imagine this feature would share the same hardware as EvE directly. If anything else, I imagine docking and offloading to an avatar would be a transition to another cluster. This is naturally just speculation, but CCP has put up a pretty impressive hardware solution so I would be surprised if they don't have something equally impressive to accommodate this.
And yeah, mining was an example of something I don't generally bother with that someone else might enjoy. Incarna will be the same thing. Many existing EvE customers might not enjoy it, but overall, it could bring in some of those people who have been on the fence that would really enjoy the game barring this one mental hurdle. As with everything, time will tell whether this is a great thing CCP is doing or an "implement and forget" feature.

mklinic, that is the main thing that I'm interested in seeing about Incarna - is the explanation. Will they weave a carefully crafted mechanic that stands scrutiny or will it be a "because we said so" sort of thing.
As highly evolved as technology is in the EVE Universe, even recovering from all the wars - the rate of advancement in technology is woefully slow.
Will this just be some deus ex machina thing...you know?

"I highly recommend always making sure that if you get podded that you make absolutely sure that you purchase a new clone before leaving and that the clone has sufficient sp for your character -- no rushing out for vengeance."
Good advice and it bears repeating. However lose the caps bro...
Walking in stations opens the game widely. I remember people in CCP back in 04 who said eve would NEVER have walking. So to that end if someone in CCP says that stations will NEVER have PVP, I say never say never... This game will most likely be around for the next 10 years; and you can take that to the bank.
The caps appeared with the memory of the emotion that flooded all over the place the the time. I think I may have actually tried to kick myself when I did that. I ended up not being able to fly a bunch of ships, because although I had the piloting skill for the ships - I lost points in a bunch of the secondary skills. I looked at the amount of time it would take me to retrain those skills, and it was just painful.
CCP could keep EVE going and growing if they maintain their slow and steady pace. If they get ahead of themselves... but that is along the lines of borrowing trouble, as they say.

I don't quite understand why people want incarna. Why leave your ship when you can do everything from there?
Are we going to have space stations of idiots doing dances and /train?
There better not be missions/pvp etc with that, I would be thoroughly disapointed, as thats what dust will do.
I can see it adding a bit of depth and making the game a bit more personal. Plans can be hatched by a group of mercs in a seedy station bar somewhere out in a backwater system. Corporations can hold board meetings in corporate offices. Stuff like that could add a whole new dimension to the game without sacrificing what makes EVE the game it's die-hards love.
