I am a very picky gamer when it comes to MMORPG's, this is mainly due to Ultima Online, which was in my opinion the best MMO ever created. Since OSI practically destroyed that game with unnecessary updates, I have been on a ten year search for a game that not so much mimics it (that wont happen), but can hold my attention and give me that same feeling of immersion.
Now hear me out, I have played over 30 MMO's since, most of them for about 5 minutes, some for about a week. Most MMO's suffer from either being a WoW clone, or simply is too foreign for more taste (Korean grindfest, ect.) I damn near gave up on playing MMO's, (especially after trying Mortal Online)
Other than UO, one game I loved to death was Star Wars Galaxies, (of course pre-CU), and now I have found a game that not only fills my thirst for a good MMO, but exceeds my expectations in various categories.
Simply put, this game is remarkable. You can see all the effort put into this game by the dev team.
I can name off-hand ten things I love about Fallen Earth:
Vast landscapes
Awesome combat system
Detailed cities, objects, characters (I love how every single item you equip shows up on your character)
Missions that never feel like a grind
Awesome character customization
Wonderful support from devs and fellow players
Extremely in-depth crafting system
Rare drops (weps, armor)
The setting! (Post-apocalyptic)
If I were to really try to explain this game in reference to other MMO's, i'd say it's SWG meets Anarchy Online with super awesome combat.
Honestly give this game a shot, the client and patches take an hour and a half to download, and now they have a free trial, excuse my language but this game is fucking awesome. |

It is fun, and I find myself itching to play again.
The problem is that I lack the money to suscribe to anything right now :-(
Life sucks.

Hey, I love the game, been playing almost daily since launch, but this?
"Rare drops (weps, armor) "
What do you mean? There IS no such thing in FE?!
(better me than the trolls....)

Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.
Actually, with th elatest patch. Now there are veteran monsters that appear randomly and drop rare weps or armor
Hm... I wasn't aware of this. Not sure I like it, I'm a crafter....
DB

Well, the weps are not bette than what you can craft, their equal, but they have a unique look and title
It's the serendipity system DB, rare veteran spawns of regular mobs that drop "unique" gear, which we are assured is not better than crafted, just different (looks/stats).
That's make it rare gear but not epics like in some other game.
I got the feeling from what the devs said at the gathering of the clans that a lot of the drops will be more social items - due to the different appearance and the gear not being better than what you can craft.
There's a few threads on the FE forums about it, requesting info on mobs found / item drops, but it would appear that the spawns are so rare that not much info has been gathered as yet.
I think its all good except one tiny detail. You can kill your own faction without penalty thereby its one big FFA and not teamed battles it was supposed to be..
Welcome to the wastes!
I feel the same way as you OP. I tried the trial and subbed within' a few hours. Its nice to have that feeling back again. The community is great, found some awesome RP, and its just gritty and fun. Its a breath a fresh air out there... go to your local walmart and make sure the boxes are on the top shelf and faced well!
See you out there!
Its been a while since I played but fallen earth is still one of my most favorite games on the market now.
Eventhough I'm moving on to other games, this one still has a special place on my hard drive.
Yeah, I enjoyed the 11-day trial. I'm thinking about giving in and buying the game.
As an old UO/SWG vet myself I can only agree. 100%.

Thanks for the review Ramo! I've been doing a lot of research into what game to pick up and enjoy after redeploying back to the US here in another month. I'm really looking forward to stinking my teeth into another MMO just to relax and enjoy after being away from 'em for over a year.
The typical choices out there on the market right now haven't made me very excited, but your review has made me suddenly really interested in this title that I knew nothing about. I too miss the old glory days of UO and a big fan of novels and books based in this genre.
Looking forward to checking it out.
A question though to those playing Fallen Earth:
I've read on a few threads that the population on the servers are extremely low. Whatever MMO I decide on, my buddy and I will be enjoying it together so I'm not too concerned with grouping as much as economy and social concerns (ie just meeting people, guild communities, etc).
Seeing that crafting plays a big role (something that I really like) it sounds like it would be benefical for a new player to be on a pretty active server to reap the benefits of a good player-based economy.
If it's healthly, any recommendations on servers?
Thanks in advance!
Theres only 1 server so you dont have to worry about that...
As far as population goes, the game seems pretty healthy to me. One thing that is different about FE than most games out there is the huge open world. You can definately get lost in the wastes and not see anybody for a while, but then again once you get the feel for the enviroment you understand why. The major hub cities are always busy and usually decent activity around the smaller cities too. Since it is 1 server that means all timezones internationally are mixed. I've seen Russian, Chzek, Spanish, German, French clans (off the top of my head).
I digress, but yeah, you can run around for a long time and not see anyone if you so choose. Check out T.E.M.P.S when you first start. Its just a guild out there to help people get on their feet. The game does have a steeper learning curve than most and that clan is a combination of player's Alts from bigger clans to help people along. Also the help channel is usefull too, but after level 5 you have to manually select it to display in chat.
Hope this helps!
I agree, it's one of the best MMORPGs I ever played. If they'd scrap the item shop, I'd be resubbed right away. But they won't.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
Dunno about the actual stats. However, I think while playing the game the population seems lower than it actually is, because the world is completly open. In games like WoW or WAR or whatever, where the players are most of the time cramped into smaller areas, confined by invisible walls, mountains, the ocean or whatever, servers seem more crowded. In FE the people can spread out over the whole area.

I disagree. I found the combat tedious and annoying. The world is uninspiring and bland. To each their own though. Games are becoming like movies anymore, people either like em, hate em, or are in between. All a matter of taste and circumstance.
Thanks for the information everyone, it's good to see intelligent responses from people that play game... complaints and phrase alike.
Cavedeth, I'm not sure how I missed the one-server mechanic during my research thanks for that information! I can see why people have commented in the past about the population being an open-world. My close friend that I serve with and I are planning on teaming-up in whatever game we decide to play so the fact that we can either enjoy the community or seperate from it all without the fear of being on a 'dead' server like on some MMO's is a real selling point.
I've seen recommedations about TEMPs before, I think from the feature articles written here on MMORGP. I'll look them up, sounds like a perfect place to at least get all those initial newbie questions answered when starting a few game.
I won't be back in the States until mid-to-late July, but I'm leaning towards Fallen Earth as the place to reside, at least until some of these newer MMOs are released.
The current state of the market is pretty odd, coming back to civilization in a middle-period of several MMOs that have been around for awhile and so many larger 'next-generation' MMOs on the horizon.
Thanks again!

Couple of 'why dont you just read the bloody website' type questions...
Any housing implemented or planned?
How does PvP work?
The second question is more important to me because, as a rule, I've yet to find a land based MMO that has a PvP system that doesn't make me want to kick a kitten. Not literally, mind. Is FEs any different? Never played it but the Post Apoc setting is a bit of a temptation for a Mad Max 2 fanboy like me.
The ruptured capillaries in your nose belie the clarity of your wisdom.
One question do i need to craft or can i make money doing missions/quests and buy crafted stuff? Or do i need to harvest to get money to buy things?

Regarding crafted gear, there are two ways to get access to it. Befriend crafters or join a big clan that have a lot of hand-me-downs.
Serious crafters are usually busy with projects so it takes time to fit in smaller orders so its a good idea to keep in contact with several crafters.
To give you an example; I am building a car for a clannie right now, started today and if all goes well it will be ready in 5 days, that is 5 days real world time. The project is in 5 steps though so I could make something simple like a new gun in between steps but it need to be planned.
"You are the hero our legends have foretold will save our tribe, therefore please go kill 10 pigs."
thanks for the answer but it doesnt rly answer my question regarding money, will i have it if i personly dont craft? Do i need to harvest to get money to buy stuff?

Minters, yeah you need to harvest non-human mobs you kill (extra click after you loot them) in otder to get all they drop - and the harvesting is generally where you find the more valuable stuff to sell.
Depends on what role you're interested in really. Melee is cheap, just need to have chips to upgrade your gear / weapons and pay for repair kits. Pistols / rifle require ammo, which you can buy, but which is a constant drain on your funds if you can't make it yourself. You probably would squeak by quite well just looting mobs (and harvesting them) and selling what you get. Then if your coffers get low, you can scavenge stuff to sell too.
I run a pistoleer / crafter and was permanently broke, because I held on to a lot of stuff for crafting that I could have just sold otherwise. Once you hit S3 though, chips (money) shouldn't be an issue at all, however you choose to play.
I'm confused. I did the trial. Uninstalled the first day that I played because of clunky combat, clunky graphics, and generally clunky gameplay. I was highly disappointed since one of the main things that I keep a look out for are post apocalyptic type games.
Have to say though, that if folks are enjoying it - then good for them. It is great to be able to find a game that you can enjoy out there.
edit: To kind of go with what was said later, yeah - when I did the trial it was not recently. Has the game changed?
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Explorer: 87%, Killer: 67%, Achiever: 27%, Socializer: 20%
Me too. My impressions have nothing to do with the scenery, character customization, graphics, combat or open-world.
I found the game-play, mechanics, assets, content, to be utterly boring and shallow after playing for a month, not immediately. It was an entertaining month, but:
- Very single-player game-play feel and mechanics to it.
- Factions are meaningless with no open-world conflict or purpose to factions from the beginning of game-play, which you spend most of your first month in Sector 1 from the beginning.
- PvP is tiny isolated combat areas that adds nothing to the game, story, rewards, or motivation for participation.
- Everyone has multiple characters and can be independant on just about everything; independence of crafting means everyone is doing it, and there is no economy or value to an in-game auction house, let alone community reliance.
- Crafting is perhaps 80% of the game, and you can be completely self-reliant. Again, very single-player esque, and leaves little to be desired for a massively-multiplayer game or purpose. Crafting is fun and encouraging, but with everyone having their own crafting mule, doesnt contribute to any massively-multiplayer enconomy.
- Extremely quest heavy game-play of fetch this, deliver that, kill 5 mutants here, 5 rats there, rinse, repeat. The questing is a grind, and I never use that word, but mean it literally.
- Character progression is slow and redundant...very slow and redundant.
In short, a very pve-centric, slow character progression, non-massively-multiplayer type, single-player-eque, crafting simulation game. Thats my take-away; I just couldnt trudge through another month of the same redundant quests and slow character progression to make it into sector 2.
