TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea: E3 Hands On With TERA

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com's Garrett Fuller spent some time with the folks at En Masse to talk about their upcoming MMORPG, TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea and to take a hands-on look at the game.

image

This past week at E3 we got to see a lot of MMOs. One of the more surprising titles we got to look at was TERA. I say this because when TERA first came onto our website I was wondering who they were and how they were being made. The more we learned the closer we grew to the game and the team over at En Masse. Now at E3 they gave us one of the best hands on demos we had seen at the show. I'll try my best to describe why TERA kept the classic MMO spirit and game play even though it was a ten minute demo.

We entered the En Masse booth for our demo and were quickly moved toward a computer. Each player was given a class, I played the Slayer, my colleague was given the Warrior class. There was also a Berserker, Priest, and Sorceress. While all of these seem rather normal for RPG classes, the look and feel of the game set them apart. Despite being somewhat Eastern in art design, there are still some major Western influences. It almost put the world into an undefined realm that crossed a lot of borders in terms of visual style. This was a good thing, because overall, the game looked cool.

Read the E3 Hands On With TERA.

Looks very interesting, can't wait to see more :)   (or even better, do its beta)

I hope this one will arrive in 2011.

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

gotta admit, reading reviews about this game everyday just really increasing the hype for me on this one.

Also massive props for giving DAoC a shoutout on the similiarities, lots of MMOs fans(myself included) really thought daoc had the best MMO around and I'm really hopeful that this one's combat follows in the footsteps of a great game that hasn't yet been reproduced similiarly.

DAoC's combat was actually really horrible.  I had just come off D2 when I played it, and I found it hard to believe how slow and clunky it was.  Still, there was something magical about DAoC's RvR zones that has yet to be recreated in another MMO.

This and Rift appear to be the sleeper hits waiting to happen.  Odds are good one of these is going to knock it out of the park.

Combat sounds great, but did you get a chance to sit down and ask some good questions, or did they give you any new and exclusive information about the following topics?

    - Typical korean grind?

    - Use of instances?

    - Non-combat gameplay?

    - PvP?

    - P2W or P2P?

    From the official Twitter

@Melkren: What would you say to the people that snub this game off as another grindy Korean MMO?

Brian Knox: We have the green light from Bluehole to create the right leveling curve for the western audience. This is a huge priority for me personally

Yes and no. There are both instanced and non-instanced dungeons.

The game plays like a third person shooter and it uses hitbox detection instead of rolling dices.

Yes. There will be PvP and PvE server sets. In PvP servers world PvP is enabled.

    P2P.

I would strongly disagree about DAoC's combat being slow and clunky.  By today's standards it seems a bit slow and clunky, but at the time it came out, it was epicsauce.

I just had a friend tell me he is really looking forward to this game and by the sounds of it, the article's author was very impressed.  I have played a fair number of MMOs, and I wonder what really sets this apart from the pack though, if anything.  I find it a little difficult to be interested in any of the upcoming MMOs except SWtoR, because it is made by Bioware.  It is tough to imagine that any of these games are going to be able to compete in terms of quality and volume of content with WoW or Bioware's upcoming monster being described as the most expensive game ever made.  I am not saying that these games won't be decent, just that for some of us who only play one MMO at a time it is hard to get into the ones that are only running with the pack and don't distinguish themselves as one of the best.

    Currently playing:
    Rift
    Played:
SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot
    World of Warcraft, AoC

I don't understand why people howl and moan about instances so much.  They have never been an issue to me.  The korean grind or lack of pvp, however, would be a major concern.

Fanboi to the core.  I don't see any moaning in my posts, but it is a hot topic for a lot of people, and I personally do not care about the amount of instances in a game.

    @ Locien

My bad.  I was looking for more updated, new, and exlusive information.  I already knew about the stuff you posted.

So the game is fast, has the typical classes with their typical jobs, typical graphics (albeit somewhat different in an undefined way) and... has stuns?

Sorry, doesn't sound great to me. I also looked up some video on youtube, and when I see there a sorceress with barbie-proportions prancing around in high heels in a pink skimpy dress, and that's her supposed to be fighting, then I know the game ain't for me.

Give me an old fat ugly stinking hag that can use her spells to make enemies explode into a bloody mist with bodyparts flying around, and who eats children as a way to recharge her energy... and not these barbie-dolls.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

    @ Garrett Fuller:

"I do not know if their interface allows for using the mouse to click icons on the screen."

No you cannot, Those icons are on the screen so the player can keep track of there cooldowns.  You can however use a 360 controller, speedpad, or reprogram the keys to your mouse buttons.

As for myself, I will probably go with a mouse + speedpad setup (might try a controller).  I'm really bad when it comes to WASD + extra keys for skills ;)

I wouldn't call the game fast as per say its constant. When fighting you are doing something at every moment unlike most MMOs where you just hit number keys and only move if you want. The classes while have typical purposes are not typical in themselves. As far as graphics, thats just a personal opinion but I think you need your eyes looked at or a better monitor if you think they are typical. Like a lot of MMOs have the typical CC abilities like stun, knockdown and knockbacks.

I don't know what your issue is with good looking people. It's just a game, wanting to have a good looking character is not a bad thing. Maybe you have Caligynephobia which you might want to look into.

The combat sounds fun and meaningful which is what I'm looking for but I'm not sure my wife will be able to handle it.  Though if I can get the Xbox controller (as mentioned above) mapped for it then that might work.

P2P?  *Sigh* That's fine but at this point in my daughter's life that probably means I won't more than Demo/Trial/Beta the game.  :

Well, your in luck, sir. If round is what you want then your in luck. Both the Popori and Baraka race are roundish. Popori's are more like fat little furries and Baraka are bigger stonish like people.

I have gotten both a 360 controller and a PS3 controller to work with the game.

Unfortunatly, P2P is how it's going to be. If you want something action based that is F2P look into Vindictus which should be release by the end of the year.

Looks great, wonder what my motivation for PvP will be.  I enjoy PvE too, at this point I'll enjoy anything remotely polished and fun, considering how bad the games have been in the past few years.

For the people concerned this game will be too Korean.

Bluehole studios are west coast founded in Seattle and they have the greenlight to completely change the game for western audience (COMPLETELY, including coding themselves) versus Aion which gave the west coast producer NO power.

Go to tera-online.com and educate yourselves. :)

En Masse is the company that is located in Seattle. Bluehole is the korean company that is developing the game itself. Also Brian Knox the person who made the statement your reffering to only mentioned that they are allowed to edit the leveling curve to fit a western audience. Everything else is part of the westernization process which is being taken care of during the focus testing and beta test phases. Though it is assumed that Bluehole has given a lot more power to En Masse then NCsoft does to NCwest.

Chronicles of Spellborn was one of the most interesting and fun MMORGPs to have come out in the last few years. (The horrible noobie experience and the lack of a big name publisher really hurt it, though.)  A comparison to it can only mean good things to TERA for me, especially in light of the predictably mediocre reports coming back from E3 about Bioware's Star Wars.

I loved the fact that the reviewers avatar could have died, his team wiped out rather than having a ‘Kill All’ button. Even game industry reviewers need to step up to the mark. :)

I should point out that new coding for the western version of the game has to be minimal, otherwise you are going to open a can of worms come patch day.

Certainly one to keep youe eye on.

Would also have to disagree, the controls are different. But it plays smoother than aion, and most mmorpgs for that matter. It also have very fast and responsive positioning, which to me defines anti clunky.

But i agree that it doesn't match up with wow's combat movement but few do, lerts be honest.

That being said tera's system seem very different other than the position based fighting. Which aion claimed to use , but it was a sad joke.

Interesting write-up which gave me more of a "feel" of the game's combat system.  It's definitely a game I'm looking forward to; let's hope it lives up to its promise.

p.s.  "The Sorceress reigned down spells,,,"  should be "rained", of course ^^

I don't know your issue with people not having the same opinion as you, that you assume that you are incapable of having a normal discussion, and instead start to attack people in trying to tease them.

That beeing said: I'm personally just bored of heroines that all look like generic anorexic teenagers clones. I've no fetish for fat people either, instead I'm a fan of diversity in games. Why play different games if all characters look the same? There are only few ways how to create the model of an anorexic sorceress to please the teeny crowd. However, there are many ways how to create a sorceress model, if for a moment you forget the target audience consisting to either of children who never considered a woman to look differently than the actresses in hollywood flicks, or of teenagers in their puberty who fap fap fap to their female chars.

It bores me. It's as if all restaurants decide to serve food that tastes the same no matter what you order, only because that taste is popular. Or if you read books and all characters are the same, because that type of character is popular too.

I guess the reason why characters look like this is only to some degree that they appeal that much to the teeny crowd. Another reason probably is: innovation costs money. Tell someone to create a model that looks like thousands existing ones: no problem, done quickly and efficiently. Tell someone to be creative: that takes time, that costs money.

I really do hope that they do not increase the lving speed to that of the dreaded WOW I am max lvl in 2 weeks. I would rather play the Korean Version then.

Does anyone know if the payment options will be that of guild wars? or better yet DDO?

  • sfc1971sfc1971 Member UncommonPosts: 421

Lets hope they learned from Age of Conan, no not the lesson of fixing bugs before shipping.

But the simple lesson of being honest about who your game audience is. Funcom failed at that and got many a PvE player trying out a PvP game.

And with this game, I don't know still. It sounds great in some respects but are they just trying to win over everyone?

Will this be a PvP or PvE game? Quest based or grind based? Be honest about it, so that a PvE player doesn't have to deal with constant revamps because the PvP players are complaining about class balance and the PvP player doesn't have all these carebears running around that consider a lvl 99 beating up a lvl 1 unfair.
