something cyberpunk. Ghost in the Shell would do, Shadowrun not so much. proper Warhammer. Mechwarrior/BattleTech, with more than just combat. Elder Scrolls maybe.
See lol... I couldn't play Battle Tech as an MMO. I use to play it in chicago on the pier with the pods. Once you've experienced Battle Tech in the pods with the Hydraulics and everything going there's just no going back lol.
Voted for Mass Effect. Second choice would be Ghost in the Shell.
Outside of the presented choices, for fantasy if some developer had the enormous cash reserves to get it right, I'd go with Malazan Book of the Fallen. For Sci-fi, I'd love an EvE-esque game set in CJ Cherryh's Compact Space. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chanur_Novels#The_Compact
Multiple factions, rich lore. Hell I own the out of print Dune Encyclopedia which would be enough to get any game developer started!
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
Underworld... vampires vs werewolves and humans in between. Could even be done in the time period before the original movie.
Also I would love a french and indian war period mmo with viseral hand to hand combat, bows and arrows, flint locks etc.
lastly but not least a Mafia based mmo complete with driving, tommy guns, boot legging, gambling, assasination / hits, territories and more. The last Don + The Godfather + Lastman Standing + Road to Perdition lol.
edit: my first post in 5 years of reading, good topic.
I would definitely wish a MMO inspired from the Babylon 5 universe ...with avatar and ship combat gameplay , able to fight from the cockpit (able to use HOTAS , TrackIR, gamepads - for comfort , as playing a mmo is time consuming and I would like just to lay on my couch and play the game at my TV, with some beers next to me). However I would wish him to continue the story after Babylon 5 and I would hire Michael Straczynski to continue the story.
It should also have good economics, a system somehow similar to POTB ... I mean I don't enjoy wasting a lot of time gathering... but I would like to be able to hire (more stable workers, that u have to pay them so stable flow of expenses, but less effective) or have enslaved miners (free workers, not so stable as they often riot against their master, therefore u need to pay security troops to keep your slaves under control, but more effective) to perform this work for me ... and a marketplace similar to Eve (lot of fun considering the risk of transporting your goods from the mine to the factory then to the zonal marketplace).
Also I don't want to see "text quests" but instead visual and interacting quests ... therefore a dynamic world something similar to what NCSOFT is advertising for Guildwars 2
A good IP for a MMO would also be one based on Dune universe ... which is so wonderful, especially if you have read the books.
As far as fantasy goes, a MMO set in Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen) could be really, really awesome. However, I'm kinda tired of fantasy atm, so I'd much rather see a different setting.
With that in mind, I'd really love to see a The Longest Journey / Dreamfall type MMO. Or really, any setting that incorporates a modern or futuristic setting that doesn't involve everyone using robots and power suits.
I voted for the Wheel of Time, but what I would really like to see is Magic the Gathering. The multiverse is absolutely perfect for a MMO.
Edit:
Pern would be so awesome, I have to agree. There is no world quite like that one.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
For a fantasy type game i would love to see "Might and Magic" become and mmo (the series from the 90's).
For a non fantasy game, i would love to see a George Romero mmo from the "of the dead" series (night of the living dead, dawn of the dead, day of the dead, etc).
I do not want any more MMOs. I remember this thing from way back though, called a MMORPG. I would not mind one of those that was not based on an IP that they would eventually butcher, but rather they created their own lore - did it well - creating a game where one could easily feel the immersion without being bombasted by the blatant compromise of an IP... just saying.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
You know what I personally am sick of the big IP MMO's that are being released. Maybe because of the way most simply don't capture the feel of the IP because they are being shoe horned into 2 faction 4 classes per race (if your lucky) PvE focused cash grabs.
Now while there are IP's that can fit that mold a vast majority don't. If you can't figure out a way to build a game around an IP without removing certain cornerstones that attracted the fans to the IP then leave it alone. All your going to end up doing is pissing off the very people you were aiming at when you announced your making an MMO on such and such an IP. This makes it easier for said fans to quit when the inevitable bugs crop up with excuses like you destroy the IP because you couldn't make the stuff work but the stuff you left in doesn't evan work right.
For example there is a reason Blizzard didn't get the licence to make a Warhammer RTS and that is Warhammer's IP didn't fit with the RTS mold at least not in the way Blizzard implimented it. Now while Blizzard kept alot of things similar to Warhammer Warcraft was different enough to avoid litagation and because it was similar but a different IP made up on the fly by Blizzard it managed to succeed.
My idea until you can figure out how to do the IP properly how about using an IP to get insperation. Change the IP around get insperation from other souces and build your own IP around stuff you know you can make work hell it works in every other form of entertainment why not MMO's.

yes, i know that there is a new twisted metal game fcoming out but i want it MMO werew we can go to different cities(zone) and kill others =( and the faction thing from the new TM story would fit perfect into the story.

I like how you think.
I'd like to see Dragon Quest or Breath of Fire get a MMO run. Just cuz they're IPs that I think could handle it.
Other than those. Something new please.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
Judge Dredd
Dragon riders of pern
"All expectation leads to suffering" Buhhda
Hell yes that would be cool.
The main IP's I would like to see made into MMO's (not really in any particular order):
1) Shadowrun...sooo much potential if is done right, pretty much every video game entry dealing with Shadowrun has sucked so far
2) Mechwarrior and/or Battletech...clan arfare and giant mech combat/PvP
3) Robotech...especially if it was 2 opposing factions and lots of big flying/space/mech action
4) Freelancer...could make for a vast openworld game with largely player driven economy/society
5) Transformers...really suprised this hadn't been grabbed up for an MMO, maybe it has and we just don't know it yet
6) the lore of H.P. Lovecraft
Underworld... vampires vs werewolves and humans in between. Could even be done in the time period before the original movie.

I wouldn't mind having a Koudelka/Shadow Hearts MMO but thats a bit far-fetched...
Maybe Resident Evil MMO, like Outbreak.
I'd like to see a violoent version of the Gummi Bears become an MMO.
Bouncing here and there and everywhere
High adventures that are beyond compare
Give me some gummy bear juice now!
Bleach.
What??? Yeah well screw you too! I like the show.
It'd be cool to work your way up through the ranks in the 13 court guard squads/ or work your way up the arrancar ladder to Espada.
Especially if you were able to henshin into Banki or Resurreccion form. Design your own zanpaktu...
Learn Kido, train against your friends in arena combat, fully destructible environment, faction based PvP...
This game could be the shit, but it'd end up being a crappy grindfest so forget I said anything.
EDIT: I forgot to mention hunting down hollows as PvE on both sides.
