    Big weapons are not necessarily heavy. It depends on what kind of metal its made of and what kind of enchantments it, or it's wielder, possess.

    They are actually re-writing a lot of the quests for western release. In fact they are changing s**t loads of stuff just to make us westerners happy!

    Just need to get rid of the silly girly running animation, high heels and the ridiculous Popori, and they'll probably double their subscription numbers!

    Oh, and one last thing. Rift: Planes of Telara runs on the Gamebryo engine, which is what DAOC runs on. :D I think someone made the point of the graphics engine being to old.

    It does well and truly boggle my mind that certain people get so obsessed with sword sizes.  If I were a Freudian I might have some theories on that, but luckily I'm not.

     

    I do wonder how they can get so annoyed over an artistic interpretation.  I would advise, however, you stay well away from abstract art museums for the sake of your own health.  Just a suggestion.

    There are a few other factors at work here also.  The weapons are not sized for each race (A baraka & Popori will have the same size weapon even though the baraka is much larger).

    The reason is because every weapon has got to have the same reach for what ever the weapon is rated for. You can't scale down an axe to 3m in order to fit a popori if the weapon is rated at say 6m.

    So the weapon is gonna look crazy big on smaller races (sword looks big on everyone besides Baraka).  This might be the reason they MAY lock out some races to classes.

    All it matters is that graphics are top of the line at least for the mmo market.

    Having only one game (AoC), which is actually 90% popular ONLY for its graphics to compare with the graphics of TERA is total bulls**t. Not to mention that TERA will be an fps game and MMORPGs with fps gameplay are not known for their amazing graphics, animations, models and everything that has to do with the visuals, but somehow TERA manages to have amazing graphics combined with fps combat.

    I'm a huge fan of the asian art style, be it huge swords, axes and stuff or core things like character models.

    I probably WOULD be in a debate of whether to play this or FFXIV, but for the shake of pvp this is what I'll (hopefully) get.

    And I stand by my post about the eastern art design being representative of more than just "a hunk of metal".

    It's very representative. There is also quite an interesting traditon when ti comes to eastern art that most likely has something to do with the evolution of  their art design in games.

    I also read where having large eyes was actually started by one anime artist who was influenced by cartoon characters like Betty Boop. Reason being, he felt that a greater range of expression could be created using this technique.

    The problem is that westerners can't see the forest from the trees. they are too literal, at least in their approach to understanding eastern art design in games.

    Well, that's a very good question.

    We do know that a decent amount of bluehole designers were NC Soft employees who left enmasse. We also know that at some point, NC soft was not happy with where Lineage 3 was going so decided to try another way. Did this piss off the team only to have them leave and make a new game? Did they take their work with them?

    I also believe NC is (was?) suing bluehole and did win a civil suit which was then going to be appealed. Apparently some of the new Tera people tried to get new investment and disclosed some of the technologies that Lineage 3 was supposed to have and that they were going to use in Tera. In the end only the people involved know. I do know that NC is now designing their own engine to be used with Lineage 3. In any case here is some mention of the suit:

    The Story:

    In terms of Lineage 3's code disclosure lawsuit, the South Korean court has recently ruled that the 4 core developers of Lineage 3 (including the former development director) and their current employer Bluehole Studio should compensate NCsoft by 2 billion Wons.



    This is the civil ruling, following the criminal one in which the core developers of Bluehole Studio were found guilty (on Jun. 26, 2009, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced the former development director of Lineage 3 - Mr. Park to a fixed-term imprisonment of one and a half years with a 2-year suspension of execution for malfeasance and disclosure of business secrets). According to Bluehole Studio, they're not satisfied with the judgement, and will lodge an appeal immediately.



     

    On Jan. 28, the civil department of the Seoul Central District Court rendered a verdict and required the 4 involved defendants including Mr. Park to compensate NCsoft by 2 billion Wons. Meanwhile, the defendants were also ordered not to disclose NCsoft's business secrets to any others, but clear up all related data in hand.

    Though at present, NCsoft wins the lawsuit no matter in the criminal judgement or in the civil one, it's still unknown if the MMORPG TERA under development by Bluehole Studio will be fatally affected.





    Mr. Park, formerly in charge of Lineage 3's development, got in touch with a Japanese company in 2006 with the aim of attracting investment, and disclosed certain plans related to Lineage 3. Mr. Bae, who was responsible for other projects at that time, was also involved in this matter. Moreover, the former developers of Lineage 3 including Mr. Kang and Mr. Yo switched over to Bluehole Studio after the cancelation of Lineage 3, and applied certain technologies originally adopted in the development of Lineage 3 in Bluehole Studio's new project - Project S1 (currently named TERA)  Story from:  MMOsite

    Yeah I kind of heard about some of that and saw some old videos on you tube of lineage 3 and looked an awful lot like Terra. Also heard a rumor that the original L3 code had been stolen and tagged with the Terra name. I didn't realize they were still on for an Lineage 3 though. Thanks good info there man!

    You call that raging? Man, people are too sensitive. In my original post, I said I would like the game to succeed. I will most likely give the game a try. Heck, even I gave Aion a try. But within the first 5 minutes of playing I knew that game was garbage ;). All this leads up to having a discussion that doesn't completely involve rampant fanboi'ism. People get these super expectations of future games built up in their head like they are the best thing ever without even playing the game. Don't talk bad or critique my future game, that's blasphemy!

    I played AOC and i think Tera has better if not on par looks. As far as other things they are just icing on the cake.....ie dx10 godrays, shadows and such.

    Tera has a huge western staff as well thats is there to development story, quest and tweak it more for a western player base.

    I find it funny that they had to make a seperate Western design staff to actually make content. How the Asians can sit their mindlessly grinding away to advance with no skill or depth to the game amazes me.

    You gotta understand this game is made for the east market and the weeaboos on the west. Just like Aion only weeaboos will support the over-sized weapons, character screaming like 10 year old girls etc...

    I have yet to meet a person that plays or does not play a game because of immersion.  Entertainment yes, Immersion not so much.

    Many people play to be immersed in the game world - it's why they make a themed game world in the first place.  However, immersion is bound to be broken at some point.  As soon as you look at your abilities to see which attack would do more damage in what situation, as soon as you bring up your in game chat box, an ui menu, etc - so that allow isn't necessarily a strong reason to stop playing any particular game.

    Yea reading a book or paper & pen games give good immersion and maybe throw in a well made SP game.  But mmo's tend to break very early in the game.  Back ground stories and quest lines just don't cut it.

    Only one's that may get immersion out of a mmo is the RP crowd.
