Wow so there must be little to no story then if you are expected to be able to "see it all" from one race's perspective. I know next to nothing about it and it already sounds like a huge grindfest.
A friendly suggestion: don't make an assumption if you 'know next to nothing about it'.
Yeah, I feel the same way. Square Enix seems to be really losing their magic. What's up with all these bad decisions? FF13 was the most linear game they've ever released under the FF banner and I thought that was a wasted effort. FF14 doesn't look all that great either... I hope they surprise us with something great, which is basically impossible nowadays.
I really don't understand where this assumption has come from... In FFXI the stories were based on what nation you called home. Each nation had its own storyline and each player could only have one home nation. It was possible for a player to change nations via an expensive quest thus there were multiple storylines and yet they could still all be entirely explored on a single character with enough time (and gil).
That's without even getting into the individual job storylines that were required to unlock the artifact armour sets and in some cases to break the level caps (for the jobs added in later expansions). Every job had its own place in the overall storyline of the world with divergent subplots.
Seriously, if XI is anything to go by there are going to be a huge number of interweaving storylines and so far everything looks set to follow the same model in XIV.
Why would they sell something tha people wont need? There must be some reason why you would want alts or no one would pay $3/month for them.
You need to have alts? Do you need a candy bar at the store or need cable TV? Are you saying that anything for sale is something everyone needs?
I guess you're operating under the assumption that SE is just being greedy money whores and this is a way to show a lower monthly sub price while really getting everyone to pay extra because they'll need 16 alts. All I can say is look at the people trying to explain why that assumption is wrong. FFXI is a very similar character system (in that you don't really need alts) so look at it and see what people use their alts for. (I'd guess most are only for the same things the retainable characters will be for)
Also I don't expect FFXIV will be like WoW or other recent MMOs where you can max level in any class in a week or two. Rolling an alt to level up wont be a main feature like it has become for some of these other games.
Abit defensive?
I have no problem with it, i think its a pretty good idea to have a lower monthly fee and then charge extra for alts. But Hyanmen claimed that there is no reason for alts which seems strange if they offer it for $3/month which means there must be a reson why people would want alts.
And yes I Need a candy bar at the store!
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Yeah sorry. Most people have no need for them.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Hmm my comp can run it np, was wondering does anyone know if a radeon HD3600 can run it. My wifes comp has np on everything just not sure on the graphics card?
So the exp boosting goggles is only for the per-order for the standard edition? And if you get the collectors edition your just get the onion helm?? I think that is kind of a ripoff. If it is even remotely like FFXl then you will want that exp boost.

Well since u can start a few days earlier with the special edition all the extra exp from the standard edition really does is letting u catch up on exp i would say
Read that the onion helm increases recovery rate while in battle... still would rather have the exp.
Until you finally need a helmet that affords some protection.. My guess is the xp glasses will probably offer enough bonus xp to be usefull early on but will become far less of an impact over actual armor type gear..
By increasing recovery, do you mean like MP recovery? Becuase if you've been following the details of this game, I can pretty much guarantee that shortening MP downtime will garner more XP than the goggles.

This is good news indeed!!! can't wait for this...just in time for when i get back and 2 days after my birthday wooo...but am not surprised they kepted the pay for alts thing since you never needed alts expect for mule and or if any else played on that account...and if your new to final fanstey mmos you can be every class in the game no alts...duh and oh yea there were ways in the FFXI to make it look like you were a different race as well..hope they let that one slide in this one
Played:TheRealm,FFXI,WoW,FE,Eve Playing: Nothing( stuck on a ship) Future play: FFXIV,SW:TOR

Well then whats the point of getting the 8 day headstart if the exp item will let everybody catch up, and then extra. FFXl took months and months to get max level. So if it is like it somewhat then i might wait for the standard.
Just put your PS3 pad into your PC Bam, play as if you were on a PS3 simples!
I take it euro/usa servers are seperated?
Nope the servers are global. Everyone from USA, EU and JP (and everywhere else) will be playing together. Same goes for the different platforms as well. PS3 and PC will share servers.

What bothers me is the 74.99$ price tag if i dont want to wait a week to play...
Is there any info if the security token will be given or not with the normal version of the game too?
And I went and bought a PS3 last month, oh well. Still very happy ffxiv coming in september. Hope my 3200 score on high in the benchmark is enough
I only want yoshitaka amano box art =/
..Alright who am I kidding.
I dont mind they have a special edition i just think they should release both versions at the same time
First week will be laggy as hell anyway. You won't really lose much.
What the....!!
I was hoping to grab it for PS3 but Im not gonna wait 6 months (!!!!) for it, gonna do preorder for PC and forget that the PS3 exists
Tha date will be the same for EU version or we will need to wait too?

FF11 had the same alt system but i never needed one, played one character the whole time.
Can't wait, it is going to be so sweet! Finally a real mmo in 2010.
Totally pumped about this as well ... and it's been a long time coming in the mmo world.
Anyone else more interested in the in-game item that comes with the standard than the one that comes with the deluxe edition ? Seems backwards.
I would much rather have a bonus to XP.
Anyone know if deluxe gets both perhaps?

This is good news. I wanna explore this world. Nao.

I never had an 'alt' either. I had a mule. And since we get a free retainer, I won't even need one of those.
