Its comical to watch the WoW bashers swing and miss.
Really, the gear grind is there because of how the game is designed. If you don't like it, then don't raid endlessly to gear yourself to the max when you know the next expansion or major content update will invalidate all of your work.
I, personally, don't much care for getting the absolute best items out there. But I do want to run some dungeons and grab some gear. I love playing the game and don't find it a treadmill as most do because I don't run on it non-stop. I do different things.
Really its about playstyle and preference. If the xpac is crushing your epeen and you can't take it, please move on to another game or find a new way to enjoy your current one.
Because the reality of the matter is that no matter the size of your epeen, there will always be someone with a bigger one.

How you could last through progression reset after progression reset is beyond me.
Everytime something new releases everything you earned in game is given easily to everyone so they could all do the content.
Being able to progress through wow used to be fun for people like me. Now why would I even try the challenging content if in two-three months they will give higher item level heroic gear to me that will automatically make me equal to the players that actually cleared previous content.
It kinda destroys what progression in these games were originally intended to be.

You see, this is an incorrect assumption Rockgod. What you earned in a previous state of the game ISN'T easily given away to everyone.
Greens in Cataclysm do NOT equal raid obtained purples in WotLK. Item level doesn't mean squat when comparing the overall potency level of the items. A green L81 item will not necessarily be better than an ICC L80 item. Why? Because the "rarity" category tells you the full extent of the stats on the item differ to that of different rarity categories.
For instance, whilst a green may have more Int and Stam, it won't have the extra stats that are found on purple items, let alone on purple items obtained from raids. So in actual fact, the green won't be as potent as the purple. Maybe one stat will be a bit more, but not all of the stats on the item.
However, it would be futile to expect a L60 raid item to be applicable all the way through the expansions and beyond. There come a point whereby you need to eventually ditch the item. That's just how things are in MANY MMO's that have expansions. However, that doesn't mean that the raid item is automatically defunct and useless the moment an expansion is released, because often the devs ensure that the stats on the raid item ensure that the item is still useful for a good few levels of progression. Blizzard did it with Tier 1 and Tier 2 when TBC was released.
And so if they do what they've done in the past, I'm betting they'll make sure the ICC raid items are good enough until about L83ish. You can't say fairer than that really.
Its comical to watch the WoW bashers swing and miss.

Greens in Cataclysm do NOT equal raid obtained purples in WotLK. Item level doesn't mean squat when comparing "quality" level of the items.
To put it simply: a green L81 item will not actually be necessarily better than an ICC L80 item. Why? Because the "rarity" category tells you the extent of the stats on the item. e.g. Whilst a green may have more Int and Stam. It won't have the extra stats that are found on purple items, let alone on purple items obtained from raids.
So in actual fact, the green won't be as potent as the purple. One stat may be. But not the whole item necessarily.
I wasn't refering to how greens replace epics during leveling but how trivial actual progression is since the second a new raid tier is introduced all previous tiers within that same expansion become obsolete and pointless due to heroic items that are easily giving to make everyone "catch up" to the new content.
I find it shocking that anyone who cares for raiding and the validity of progression at all still plays WoW.

I agree with you that progression in WoW is only as relevant as the most recent patch cycle. Perhaps this has do with the length of time that each expansion comes out (it will be 2 years since WolTK launched before we see Cataclysm). I don't have a problem with gear becoming obsolete once an expansion hits, but not within the same expansion.
To your other point, I think by and large the 'hardcore raider', by how we used to define that term, really doesn't exist anymore in WoW or at least is a endangered species. By this point in the game's lifecycle, a majority of players don't do the 5 day a week raid anymore, in large part due to the way the game is designed now. Sure, you have progression raiders who are trying to achieve world firsts, but for the most part they make up a very, very small part of the playerbase. I'd say the average 'raider' probably does 3 days a week, which to me isn't 'hardcore', especially when most of those raids only take an hour max.
I quit WOW right before the BC expansion because it became obvious level 62 greens were going to be better than the raiding gear I had acquired raiding up through AQ 40. In fact, once this was confirmed my guild quit raiding entirely for several months until the expansion actually went live because no one could see the purpose in it.
I couldn't see the purpose in continuing to play so I moved on. To those that seem to think this is the way it has to be they're just not thinking out of the box enough, for instance, crafted gear should be the best gear in the game, raiding should be done to gather the materials to make said gear.
EVE doesn't have raiding per sec, so there's no such mechanic in the game which is why I guess I've stuck with it over 3 years now.

I know its hard for you to read the part you even highlighted but the word MOST does not mean everyone. Sure some people play for fun but MOST of the WoW player base play to get that instant gradification from getting a reward for doing anything.
I played WoW too, I quit before the first expansion because it was not the game for me, I understand I am in the minority here but lets face facts. WoW is all about instant gradifictaion and all about getting that next shine peice of gear. I left because everything was about gear, we need this to do this to do this to do this to be able to do this. That is not MY idea of fun. Others like it, cool have fun but does not change the fact that Gear is the end all be all of WoW, has been and will be.
It doesn't matter if you're attempting to speak for all of WoW's playerbase or most of them - you simply can't. You don't know what's going on in the minds of millions of players.
WoW, like any mmo, is what you make of it. If you allow yourself to take on the perspective that it's all about gear, then it will be for you. If you make it about having fun with friends, it'll be about that. You could argue that the game mechanics are such to encourage certain behaviors in the community, but you cannot blame the game for your own perspective on it.
I mean honestly.. you didn't expect this? It is so the casual people will have a chance to keep up if they chose to do so.. It is just another brilliant idea by blizzard.. There are far more casuals than hardcore raiders...
I just looked through the list on mmo-champion, and none of the 272 "entry level" greens are better than the gear I have now, and I'm not ICC 25 decked out, i'm not even ICC 10 decked out. I remember reading alot of similar things when WOTLK came out and on my two most played toons, I didn't replace any of my gear til i hit 75ish, which I was OK with because I didn't expect it to last forever.
This is not a surprise. It's also the reason I think that people shouldn't raid unless they enjoy it.
I think most people would enjoy raiding if it was done for fun, and not the same encounter 20 times a month.
This is why I don't understand how people praise WoW. It is fundamentally flawed and poorly designed. Most people say the best part is the end game, but the end game is just repeating the same small handful of raids over and over until an expansion comes out. But that's what you get when you model your game after EverQuest and don't innovate at all, you run into the same problems EQ did.
I'm really hoping some of the new MMO's will have better endlevel mechanisms in place, less neverending treadmill, more variation, unpredictability and different goals. In my eyes a next step would be tactical or strategic world objectives like territory conquest or domination.
They did create something like that, Mortal Online. The "Rare encounters" can only be encountered ONCE, once it is dead, it is dead. No respawn on it or anything. IE (Rare big dragon that wipes out everyone gets killed, well it is dead now. No waiting 1 week to re kill it, nothing DEAD GONE BYE)
And to the people complaining about this. SERIOUSLY? Try getting full t2 and most of your t3 to have it erased by greens. When I raided, it actually was HARD, now it is tank and spank, quit your QQing. If you haven't quit by now, like I did when TBC ruined everything, then you deserve it.
Thats why i liked UO... I could whoop that a$$ with a spear and just a bone helm and steal all your loot and you can have had a vanquishing halby and you'd still have aten dirt.
MMOChampion just released what appears is the beginning loot drops in Cataclysm. Lvl 272 GREENS better then ICC raid gear.. Now that is just damn funny.. We saw this in TBC expansion, then WoTLK expansion , now here we are again with Cataclysm expansion.. Same thing.. Greens will immediately replace epic gear people spent over a YEAR in raids grinding.. In the 5 expansion levels you'll be doing the same thing as before, replacing all epics with new greens, and after a month IF that.. Players will be farming dungeons at 85th level getting Blues and an occasional purple epic item, then go thru the cycle again of farming heroics for more purples and emblems to do raids..
I wonder how many players will be regearing in greens at level 81 and off to ICC to farm boss targets for achievements..
Good. It's almost worth resubbing just to see the raiders cry. Can hardly wait until I'm in my green gear so I can tell the raiders, "Gear Check, please."
I really like how people who supposedly don't play or have stopped playing years ago feel the urge to voice their opinions on how bad this yet-to-be-released-still-in-closed-beta game will be. I'm curious about this too. There are people in this thread who openly admit they haven't played the game since before TBC (which by my count is over 4 years ago) and yet they still feel the need to visit these forums to make a comment. You have admitted you can't stand the game, haven't played the game in forever, yet still feel the need to visit that game's forums to make a comment, usually on things you have no clue about since you haven't played the game in over 4 years so you have no idea how things are 'in the game'.
It would be like going to the Everquest forums and bitching about that game even though I haven't played it since PoP.
This forum has become a cesspool for trolling, which is ironic since the rules clearly state:

So what about gear reset. The whole point of the game is to progress. So we can progress more with better gear.
This is not a surprise. It's also the reason I think that people shouldn't raid unless they enjoy it.

Luckily for me, like the vast majority of the playerbase, I dont have the time to put into WoW to raid constantly like I used to.
Before TBC I did have a bunch of sweet stuff, but when TBC came out I didnt QQ. I just played the game and enjoyed all of the new content.
The issue is motivation. I am not motivated by end-game loot. I am motivated by having fun which will eventually take me to end-game loot.
I used to raid and I gotta say its not worth it to me to spend that much time. I could raid. I could spend 4-5 hours a night playing if I wanted. But I dont want to. No point in sprinting and burning out if I can jog and enjoy the scenery.

So what about gear reset. The whole point of the game is to progress. So we can progress more with better gear.
I raid to kill the bosses and get in touch with the lore, gear doesn't matter to me that much.
