Not sure why everyone is complaining about the driving. I find it less annoying than the driving in GTA4 and no one complains about that. I'm finding it a very frustrating game but that's because I'm rubbish at the PvP, or my computer isn't as good as other players. All I know is I can hardly hit anyone one on one.
I've been enjoying the game, and may sub for a month when my time is all used up. I find the driving just as good as in any GTA game and that's acceptable to me since driving in the game takes actual skill and practice and feels slightly different with each car / truck / van. I've also heard if you don't have more than 2G of ram you're screwing yourself performance wise, that may be why people can't drive properly.
The game is a bit shallow I admit, and in the end if you're not paying to play you can't unlock all the customization options to use in the social district... speaking of which I never see anyone use that district to "socialize". I do think the districts could be bigger and could hold far more people to make the districts seem more alive... I'll go countless missions without being APB'd and it can get old playing virtual delivery boy. The combat is fun and better balanced than I first thought it was, the only people not liking the combat must be traditional MMO types who can't aim, have I noticed a few aim-bots? Yes, but not near as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Overall decent game, but I won't be surprised if they eventually have to take the route Global Agenda did and go free to play with paid extra content. I didn't buy the game for the customization, I bought it for gameplay... and it's acceptable, though yes. I have doubts of long term playability.
Oh and one more thing, play with friends in full groups... the game becomes 10X better easily.

I think this is the main problem tbh. People seem to think they can jump into a game they've never played before and go solo. in the FPS world 'going rambo' is a bad thing unless part of a strategy, even then only attempted by the veteran player. Yet its quickly forgotton with APB for some reason.
I don't disagree with 55%. It's a pretty bad game.
It looks good and the customization is good. The driving is difficult but once you get used to it you can destroy people who aren't able to adapt to it.
For something with so much customization the weapons seemed horrible. The missions at first seemed random but after a number of runs it seemed like the same missions always happened in the same places so people who had played for quite a while would get there and set up ambushes in positions you couldn't get them out of within the time limits allowed. That's what destroyed it for me.
I don't agree with the review at all, nearly all of those critisisms are subjective.
The game is a kind of mmo arcade fps. The vehicles are not 100% physics accurate but neither are a lot of games it's hardly a huge step back (or forth) in comparison to other games of this ilk and I wonder how much of this is to do with the level of the vehicle they are driving.

Agreed,
If the reviewer played the game as a solo player and maybe joined with random people to form groups who didn't use teamwork or VOIP I can see why the game would get a 55 in his eyes. The game is built around teamplay and team makeup. If you don't have a well balanced team weapon wise it's all over VS the better teams.
I do roll solo at times to get backup calls and bounties... but in the end the most fun is to be had with a group of people you have in a private vent server where you can laugh at the stunts you pull off... or that poor soul you just ran over with your car.
I've got to say, I haven't had load screens last longer than about eight seconds since the beta. And how often do you switch districts?
My rig is fairly good and I load for maybe 20 seconds at most, the only part that gets annoying is if the game crashes or my internet decides to go up-and-down making me always have to load back in... then after each load you suffer through what I call the "loading sickness" where you may still lag slightly for awhile until everything in the districted has loaded in properly.
I can see why people get frustrated, and if you contantly have to switch zones to get with your group... or the game decides it doesn't like you today... the time spent loading into the game can add up quickly.
The game every other reviewer hates and says is horrible, he rated it an 81. I think that should give you an idea of how serious to take his review of APB.

Me however, I spent considerable time watching and studying these "ambush's" as you call them. They are in fact the easiest things to overcome since they have one critical flaw. They are stationary. A team of two working together can have them running like girls very quickly.
Its unfortunate that you dodnt have the will to survive and adapt, but I do understand why, for someone like you, it can be game breaking.

I love this arguement for a game's value, "The game is awesome. You are just not good enough for it." Give it a rest. Let me guess, you jump up and down on the dead bodies after you win a round? Thought so. Read a review on Massively.com that stated it clearly for me. THe writer stated the game is borked but she had fun. ENough said. I think the only question left is are you going to pay for APBs fun? No game is perfect.

So basically.. you're saying because you couldn't beat your opponent... you think the game is horrible? What do you mean the weapons seemed horrible? A blanket statement like that needs to be explained. I've had several opportunities to kill my opponent on every run that get's an APB called on me. If I didn't kill them, it's not the games fault. A few well tossed grenades do the trick. If you're an enforcer, you can toss a grenade and while they are reloading or evading you can use a stun gun that renders them useless. Shotguns are very useful in tight spaces as only a few well aimed shots can kill you.
Have you ever played CoD? Aren't there times where the opponent is simply better than you? The answer is yes. To call a game horrible because you don't possess the abilities to succeed is really stupid IMO.

Actually, the person you're responding to has a legitimate argument. It's just like any other shooter. TF2, CS:S, Unreal, Quake, CoD, BF. When you first play those games, you get your ass kicked all over the place. It's the same thing, either you practice and adapt or you whine and quit because you can't beat anyone. If you suck at shooters, why even try playing this game? Perhaps there will be a PvE map as well where you can kill dumb AI for cash, but right now there isn't. CoD managed to do quite well for itself even though there were no doubt a bunch of people who quit because they sucked. I'm sure APB will be fine if that's all they have to worry about. This game should be on XBOX live, it would do very well IMO.
Eh, it was fun in beta, nothing I'd buy though. Game got old, the customization is great don't get me wrong, but the combat got stale after awhile. There were plenty of good fights, but once you've maxed out everything and have the best of the best weapons/upgrades, it's pretty dull. Sure a patch or 2 could add some more to it but honestly 3 shotting noobs with a bit of spray from 100m away with a slotted savage ak was lame as hell(like i said i played beta, not sure if that has changed or not). And don't even get me started with car thief levels!!! OMFG, I hope they changed that since beta, I had level 9 car thief and you do NOT want to know how many cars it took to get that far. I think that alone was the worst grind I've ever experienced lol, and there was 15 levels! I couldn't take it anymore. This game does have alot of potential, but I think it's lifespan is pretty short IMO.
I don't think it's a 55% though, I'd still give a good 88% or so, it's not that bad of a game, just not for me.
I played in closed beta, and I enjoyed it, it honestly couldn't have gotten worse from there.
Wish you would elaborate. I've played the last few days and I haven't run into a single bug, glitch, server crash, client crash or anything. For the amount of detail in the maps, my rig runs fairly smoothly and it's far from a good one. Load times aren't bad. Installation and patching was a breeze. The amount of customization is unrivaled in any game available on any platform. What's wrong with the combat? I find it very similar to GTA, and that''s a good thing. There maybe be some unbalancing here and there, but it's not overly noticable. Driving is quite easy after a few days of practice(it didn't take me that long). You can solo and play in a group. All of the missions work as intended. There's almost no lag and no warping of characters. The world detail is pretty damn good. The tutorials and tooltips are excellent. The UI is very good. You can jump in and get action for 5 minutes or 5 hours. You can design your own car, or clothes, tattoos, body, music and there is a pretty nice variety of weapons and upgrades as you progress through the game. I mean really, what isn't there to like about the game? I see people saying it's horrible and there isn't anything bad. It's the smoothest launch I've seen for any MMO style game, even though it's not an open-world MMO. The VOIP works great. You can play your own death music that people can listen to when you kill them. You can blast your own music in your car. You can import songs from your HD to play with a built-in music player. I'm failing to see anything that should run people off.
There are a few things that they can add that would make it even better, but it's all a matter of content. The games core is as solid as I've seen any games core systems. A FFA zome that will put people against everyone else. A team based map where teams fight against each other. Gang territorial conquest maps. Perhaps a PvE map for all the crappy players. Expanded weapons, upgrades, equipment, clothing... etc etc etc. Maybe some further network and client optimization, but as I said.. it runs pretty well currently. Perhaps they could expand the player limits to 150 or so. I'm not sure how bad this will affect the performance though. Even then, with 100 players running around.. there's firefights all over the map.
If it's not your style of game, why did you even try it? If it's not your style of game, then say so. Don't say the game is bad just because it's not your cup of tea. I've been a part of quite a few game launches, and this one is by far the best launch I've seen.

It doesn't sound like you've played the game very long. Come back in a few weeks and tell me what you think.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I am amazed he gave it 55% after reading the write up and the awful systems I would thought it would have gotten closer to 5%.
Now obviously if you have the good guns and the better character you will say his talking rubbish and its all about skill and the lack of head shots isn't an issue and the sluggish controls is just something you have to compensate for and not knowing what you can drive through and what will stop you dead in your tracks is obvious. But by the looks of things this game needs to be pulled back and worked on for another 6 months or a year. The talk of spamming F got me thinking about STO and how unrewarding most those missions were though I suspect it might have a bit more story and flying your ship is probably close to the driving experience.
But more than this ware is the advertising for the game, out side of these forums and bad reviews I'd be amazed that anyone knows about the game. Who is publishing the game cause they really don't seem to be doing much to get people to try it out, and at this rate if your hoping on magazines to promo the game APB is out of luck.

Not to promote hatred for the game itself because I personally enjoy it even with its flaws but one of the biggest issues I have with the company is the fact there is something funky with their websites / servers where if I had not accidently stumbled upon a random forum that told me to change my DNS to a certain set of numbers I wouldn't have even been able to play the game let alone view the NA forums.
I learnt that my ISP has trouble normally connecting to their servers... which I find odd and frustrating because I spent over an hour just trying to find the work-around to the problem.
It's a good game, but the company needs to work their shit out.
I do agree now that everyone is upgraded and has good weapons new characters / players have it very hard... the newbie weapon is alright, but in close quarters like most fights are it just fails making it nearly impossible to win whatever APBs you do get. I made a crim after playing an enforcer for launch... and christ was it hard to beat people with upgraded weapons and characters, advancing my crim will be a bitch and I feel will turn away new players because they don't stand a chance.
I love how Dave Jones claims that he expected mixed reviews because "It's always hard when you create something new as it requires a natural learning curve. Also because APB is online multi-player focused, it's best played as intended, with 60 to 100 people in the city with you."
and completely misses the main reasons why the game scored badly in both reviews:
1. Poor shooting mechanics
2. Poor driving mechanics
3. Poor mission concepts, you can't walk in a bank to rob it or take hostages etc, missions are to repetitive and not immersive at all. The only way you interact with the environment is by pressing F on objectives...
4. The matchmaking feature which gives you a mission 1000 meters away while your opposition is already securing the objectives or gives you enemies with upgraded weapons while you have none. Have I mentioned that weapon upgrade system is a complete failure as well ? It actually gives you damage, range, accuracy advantage in...a shooting game ?
These are the flaws which few reasonable people in beta were pointing out all the time and hardly anything has been done. Poor shooting mechanics is in my opinion the biggest flaw. The guns are characterised by poor range, accuracy, damage and often rate of fire. They just don't feel autentic enough.
Your chances to win/lose a fire fight depend mostly on who manages to get his opponent is the optimal range of his gun. If you ever decide to give the game a try, you will find yourself in situations when you shot a guy from a semi-automatic rifle 3 times in his back and he will spin around and take you down. In contrast if you play CoD: Modern Warfare and find yourself in disadvantage inside a small buidling agaist a guy with a SMG while you have G3 your chances of wining this fight are almost completely depended from yours and his player skill.
In APB combat there is simply not enough player skill involved. The devs claim it was done on purpose to make the game accessible to people who are not good at shooter games and to create a tactical based game play, but it hurts the game experience more then helps. You seriously don't need to turn guns in water pistols to make the game experience to feel tactical. Most of the time in APB you shot so it would be nice if that part of the game would meet the shooter game standards.
Furthermore the game offers less content then a good FPS and asks for a monthly sub. Just make a fast comparison: APB against Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Those two titles offer actually more guns and combat upgrades then APB with a sub. All packed with superior combat/shooting mechanics, higher quality lag free local dedicated servers and higher number of opponents per average match.
Some people will say: but what the customisation ? Tell me how many average action/FPS gamers give a flying duck about the colour of they lances ? I admit it can be a fun feature, but it doesn't really add up with an average FPS gamer expectations. Just don't tell me that APB which 90 % of content is a drive by shooting game is not aimed that those players.
100 000 per game world ? So what you still have only 100 per instance and in fact maximum only 20 involved in few missions. Most of the time you will spend in 4vr4 skirmishes. Leagues, leader boards ? Any active gaming community has those. Have you ever tried clan based combat and joining a FPS game league ?
I'm still in love with the character creation. Yesterday I bought a bunch of clothes, started customizing them, then got my car and customized it too. My character looks great and I love the customization features. It's amazing!!!
I joined my first group yesterday. A guy in game yells at me over my surround sound which was turned up pretty high, "God damn f*cking b*tch!!!! Move your ass you stupif f*cking c*nt! F*cking moron!!!" On and on he went. I don't know how to mute players yet so I just turned the volume off. And finally when I ran up to him I tried to shoot him in the head but I guess we can't kill our own team mates To make matters worse, I started lagging so hard I couldn't hit anything once the action started.
Anyway, I bought a new computer today. Can't wait to load up my mmo's and see how they run I might be revisiting my old games.
One thing I like is that it at least "Seems" like RTW is listening to it's fans. In an interview they talked about a racing district that many fans have been asking for and talking about since beta, A zombie district etc. With the district design RTW has they are able to add on to the game in ways that makes players happy because not only will it add more to the game but it will do so in a way that has no negative impact on those that may not enjoy it.
I can tell you one thing for sure, and that is that RTW doesn't listen to their fans/customers.
There were literally hundreds and hundreds of really excellent solutions to fix/add A TON of stuff in APB, that would have made it a way better game, but not 1 single thing that was suggested on the beta forums has ever been added (Atleast not from what I've seen).

Well..... fear not.... because a racing district and a zombie district are just a few of the numerous things asked for and discussed in beta. A pro district as well with things such as head shots.
They seem to have listened, and at least are considering doing these things.
What you post seems to suggest, is that either A) Your impatient and don't realize a great deal of time goes into development or Your ideas were picked, which you in turn became upset and jaded.
So.... from what I've seen so far they are listening. So we will just have to agree to disagree.

I just quoted this snippet, but the entire post pretty much sums up my feels on APB as well.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."

Agreed well said.

I played in closed beta, and I enjoyed it, it honestly couldn't have gotten worse from there.
I'm free on Friday.

Also because APB is online multi-player focused, it's best played as intended, with 60 to 100 people in the city with you."
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=254245
and completely misses the main reasons why the game scored badly in both reviews:
