I guess the question has to be asked, though, why does it fall to forum members to collate and publish this info only a few short months before release?

I haven't been on the website in a bit, but the last time I did...most of this info was not present.

Anyway, looking forward to the game. Sounds like there are a couple of interesting things in it.

If you mean "why us and not the company" then I think I can answer your question, but not right now.

I'll edit in the next subject, "S-E as an MMO developer" to the OP later (today or tomorrow). I think it's important to let you guys know because well, they do things their own way to say the least. It might be a culture shock to some.

Is it wrong that I'm more bothered by the lack of jumping than the lack of pvp?

I'm a PvP wh0re! I love killing other players (killing, not ganking).  But I get that the mechanics can take some time, and maybe they didn't have it, or they decided it wouldn't be enough of a draw so wasn't worth it.

But jumping?  Even if it does nothing useful and is not needed, I just expect that when I hit the spacebar, my character will jump.   :)

Fortunately for you there are other great upcoming MMO's coming up too if this doesn't suit your interests ;).

Just a noob question, are you sure that fisher have been included in the game, i check through the website, not listed?

And, is it only 1 character slot for each account we play?

    Thanks.

Well, I took a little liberty and included in the list although it's not currently in the Beta, it'll be included in the retail.

There are also other classes which I predict will make it into the retail version, but it's not set in stone yet.

As for character slots, you can have potentially 8. First character is free, the ones after cost $3 a month.

In fact, I'll edit that info in as well.

I think it's 1 toon slot to start with and you pay a monthly fee per each addition slots up to 8. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: Hyanmen types faster than me. :P

The maximum size in FFXI was 64 players. I am not sure if this is the case in XIV, but I think we can expect those kind of numbers for Companies at least.

Oh yes, another bit of info I'll edit in: It is quite likely that you can have as many Linkshells as you want, just like in XI.

This is great.  Most MMO, I'm playing I get so mad when players are forced to abandon their guilds aka linkshells if they want to experience end game content.  Really kills off the small guilds by not allowing people to have multiple memberships.

btw, thank you for gathering so much info. into one post.  I've been hitting various site & trying to put together what I'm learning about the game but it's too much pita.

Is the auto-translator currently being used in Beta?  If possible, just a yes/no will be good enough for me

While Beta will begin this week so there's no way to know for sure, I can say with 95,47% certainty that it will be used there, as the servers will be up for  24/7 and all nationalities will be playing with each other.

Thanks for answering my question, i was once Wow, Warhammer player, FF still very new to me regarding the game system.

Another question, what is retainer? What we need it for?

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

In other games you put items for sale in Auction House or the likes.

In FFXIV, you give your items to your Retainer NPC to sell at your own Marketplace.

It's hard to say how exactly it will function, with S-E you never know :D.

How do the loading times between zones work? Is it once your out of the city/town/npc friendly area?

or is it more of when youre entering a dungeon/instance or another "zone" (one of the 10 big ones)?

so, basically, is it like guildwars or a mixture of guildwars and wow?

When you enter a different region, there will be some loading.

Also if you enter an instance, there's a small loading time as well.

Real instances, so far at least, only happen in the Class Quests and when a cutscene is loaded from the HDD. The scene you saw in the Benchmark happens in an instanced area, for example.

Aside from that, the dungeon in the beta version for example contains no loading times. It is smooth transition, and not an instance.

You do not have to load once you exit a city/friendly area.

It is much more like WoW than GW, if they were compared. The "regions" are huge.

This means that you need to watch out for your MP usage so you don't run out of mana before getting to the next Aetheryte.

Does this mean that partys will be limited on where they can camp/xp because of MP restrictions? Or is the whole "camp" mentality going to be out the door with this game?

S-E wants us to roam, potentially from one Aetheryte to the next, so yes. Camping, if not completely abandoned, will not be the primary method of progression.

They are trying to make parties more mobile where you will be on the move instead of pulling to a set camp.  As far as how long a party can stay out it will depend on a lot of things.  Especially since there are multiple classes you could have warriors that change to mages and mages that change to warriors to extend it.

How about inventory management? Are there severe limits on it similar to FFXI or is it more WoW like where you can buy huge bags and also have bank slots etc. to store gear?

In the Beta you have 80 inventory space on your character right from the start. I'd assume it stays the way it is in retail too.

We don't know enough about retainers to know how they fit into the picture, but I think they can store stuff too.

I have a question, not sure if u can answer or not. Basically i want to know if this game has keyboard + mouse support like most modern mmo's. I know lots of people dont care about this as there used to the last FF but its important to me and im sure many others.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the #1 priority for them at the moment.

I'm sure all the newer testers will be very vocal about this issue though, so we might see a shift in priorities as the beta goes on.

Since the Alpha version's first few months only included testers that had played FFXI for great amount of time already, they were used to the controls as is and so they didn't really report it as a huge problem. Thus even though there may have been a lot of reports concerning the sluggish controls in the last weeks of Alpha, SE has not yet reacted to it.

Anyway, currently it needs work. If I were to think of some concerns about this game, this would be the #1.

It is. The problem is the mouse, not really the keyboard.
