Can you suggest game which has a fun ranger class?

NoxulasNoxulas Member Posts: 9

I've got a soft spot for ranger classes and I'm looking for a new game to play. I don't mind if it's Single player or MMO as long as the experience is entertaining. What i'm NOT looking for is a game where you pick the ranger class then can only get two shots in before your enemy has closed in on you and you're forced into whipping out your melee weapons. If I want to stab stuff i'll pick a warrior! Let my bow sing. Also I am quite a graphics slut so bonus points if the game you suggest is visually appealing. I also like crafting but i realise i may be getting a pit picky, still cookie if you can suggest a game that ticks all of these criteria. Games that I've heard of and opinions below.

Guild Wars - Enjoyed the versatility that the whole ccg theme brought to the class. Loved the difference that the type of bow you equipped made to the range/speed/arc of your shots.

LotRO - Only played for a few days but found it enjoyable, however the place looked freaking deserted and i got lonely, maybe better on a more populated server?

WoW - Never really tried the hunter class here, maybe i should revisit it?

Lineage II - Never played this game, is it worth checking out?

Vanguard - Graphics were too oldschool for me, didn't like playing it.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Try Darkfall if you havent already because you may like it as much as me.

As far as a Ranger class goes, the funnest Ranger that I have played would have been in AoC. When someone comes close, you should do melee though . .. but Rangers in AoC have all sorts of traps so you could trap them then run and turn and cripple them and then run and turn again for some bigger hits so they get to kite a little bit but melee is a big part of their damage as well.

I really liked the ranger in Vanguard as well but you mentioned that the graphics are too 'old school' so that made me think that you may not last long enough in Darkfall to find out how fun it is and look past the graphics.

Asheron's Call ranger was pretty fun too but not sure how happening that game is anymore . .. and again with the graphics . ..

As much as I don't like WoW, playing as a hunter is really, really fun.   Especially Beast Mastery spec'd hunter.  Ton of dps.

try a hunter in wow.Very well designed and fun class.Traps, snares and pets. You can tame almost any animal in the game(spiders and insects and moths included) and make it your permanent pet. They have lots of abilities and are customizable.you use a bow, crossbow or gun and do dps from ranged while your pet malees the enemy and keeps their attention.

I suggest you try Fantasy Earth Zero. If you choose the archer class there it feels as if you're playing a shooter game. Try it to see what I mean.

Darkfall is the only one that really makes it feel like you shooting arrows.

DDO Arcane Archer --> insane dps and for some reason tanking abilities too (at least in the low levels). The game is free in America if you don't feel like paying a subscription.

    Eleanor Rigby.

Oblivion - been a while since I played, but the archery required proper aiming for range, not just point and shoot, as I recall.  There is a ton of mods out for it (perhaps too many!) and the graphics are top of the list.

For Lotro, consider visiting Landroval, the unofficial RP server.  It's fairly populated,  and it's likely to become more so once it goes F2P (if DDO's population change since going F2P is of any indication).  I used to use my dwarven ranger for resource gathering runs in and around the Bree area.

I too enjoyed the Hunter when I was playing WoW, and was the only class that I ever played to max level (at the point when I quit).  My only issue with it, at the time, was not having enough stable slots for all the pets I wanted to keep.

If you can handle the agonizing, boring, long ass grind that is Aion, then you will be rewarded with a really fun, powerful ranger. It's got the graphics that you are looking for as well. It's difficult for me to recommend this game because it fails for me in other areas, but being a ranger lover myself, I'll admit that I loved my Aion ranger.

Cool animations, stuns, and a knock-back ability keep your target away from you. You will have to kite a bit but that's part of any ranger class. (except easy-mode WoW ranger where you don't take a single point of damage due to your OP'd warrior pet). Slow going early on, but around level 20 wehn u get some decent shots its great.

Ermm, i don't get it, you say that Vanguards graphics are old school yet you have no problem with Guid Wars or WOW graphics, lol are you sure you have even played Vanguard.

Anyway, Vanguard has one of the bests ranger classes you will see in any mmorpg and with the server merge going on as we speak there will be plenty of people on the new server.

Vanguard graphics, old school! no offense mate but perhaps you need to take another look or your PC isn't powerful enough to run at a decent graphic level, that's not the games fault.

Ok, I suggest trying DDO, archers there are quite fun. Since you've played WoW I don't reccomend it (you know, you will play diffrent class, but the game is generally the same). Lineage II if you're prepared for grinding ... a lot. Aion if you're prepared to suck to about mid levels (it picks up later) - this is the worst ranger ever that i played in lower lvs (and you MUST be a meele to lv9!) but after you getting higher and higher it's getting better.... and really 'rewarding feeling'.

  • wildtalentwildtalent Member UncommonPosts: 380

a lot of people have directed you to ddo for a good ranger class.

first it is fun to play, but unless it has changed since I last looked into it, there is a problem.

ranged dps, doesn't measure up to melee dps.

because of this you will find at higher levels they only rangers people tend to want to group with are melee twf builds.

you can get into groups but you will have a harder time finding them.

Thank's for this suggestion, the gameplay more than makes up for the graphics and the fact that you actually have to aim is something new to my experience of the fantasy genre.

I didn't mean to upset anyone calling Vanguard oldschool, it's just not my kinda style. I like Guild Wars because it's fairly unique, the same goes for WoW graphics and the same again for Dofus if you've ever heard of it. Another game i really liked was Cabal because of how much detail went into the skill animations, sure it was your generic eastern grinder but i'll be damned if every skill you used didn't look spectacular.

So yeah there needs to be a balance of skill detail, gameplay, world detail... But to be honest i'm just looking for a filler game until Blade & Soul and Guild Wars 2 come out.

I tried Aion as well but I didn't like it. Got to 50 and found it was more fun levelling alts than playing my ranger main. I also hated the first 9 levels as scout B[. Kiting elites was kinda fun but the pvp was a let down. Zergfestsrus.

I guess i'll give DDO a shot too, I've only tried it briefly before

Anyway, thanks for the help/opinions/feedback and keep them coming!

I would strongly suggest Warhammer Online for that. Since you do not want to melee anything I usggest a Squig Herder. 2 reasons.

I'm a all-out spellcaster-type of  player, usually, though SH is by far the most fun and entertaining class I have EVER played in any game what so ever. Their personality and humor is almost overwhelming and the story of them is great. Squigs is by far the coolest companions you can ever encounter.

Second is that you have skills which builds-up even tho you run so kiting is fairly easy and alot of fun. Also you can keep shooting regular arrows at your target as you run, if you run sideways so they are in LOS ofcourse.

I was going to say aion becuase of how fluid the ranger is.  I swear when I played the ranger in aion, it felt like no other character Iv ever played in an mmo.  It moved around as if it were a balarena dancer jumping in and out of crevouses with shoes made for rangers.  The bow shot like a expert bowman thats been shoting arrows for decades.  Granted I only played for 8 or 9 levels, in poeta, but I really loved it.  Since you have already played it though as you stated.

Honestly, if your looking for a nice polished feel to gameplay and just about everything else play WoW. It has a really good archer class that's really fun to play in PvP. You'll find yourself kicking some major ass if your actually a skilled hunter. I've played just about everything else and unfourtunately until GW2 comes out thats my final opinion.

Most people go through life pretending to be a boss. I go through life pretending I'm not.

It's a matter of preference. I don't like games that try to imitate reality in such detail because they always fall short due to the limitation of the game engines, maybe when a mmo built with the crysis 3 engine is released i'll think differently but i doubt that's going to happen anytime soon. Anyway, I tried the game for a week and barely saw anyone else. It has a lot of potential but the playerbase is way too small and they're trying to patch things up too late what with the arrival of SWTOR, GW2 and Blade & Soul over the next 12 months.

Wait a second . .. you are 30. Fantasy Earth Zero? well see for yourself:

In Darkfall you have to aim and most players are around your age:

These vids are from people trying out the free-trial which was posted recently . ...

Here is a better ranger vid though with the old graphics/effects that have been changed (vid is over a year old?):

He is actually a ranger/mage before the archery specs came out. I would like to see more archery skills/specs added, only have been about 7 in the past year. This is the funnest MMORPG that I have played. Good balance of PVE and PVP. Risk vs Reward so you can get quite the adrenaline rush. Dying matters and so does winning . ..!

As much as I hate to pimp anything made by SOE, Rangers in EQ2 are kind of fun. And they have a decent free trial.

I have to agree with the AoC Ranger being one of the most fun archer classes i have played. They have enough melee ability to help you if the target should get close enough and they have plenty of traps and a pinning shot that will keep the target snared long enough to finish them off before they can get to you...or at least when i played they seemed really good.

  • csthaocsthao Member UncommonPosts: 1,123

No other game out there can let you kite more than 20+ mobs as a ranger than Vanguard. Pimp yourself out with mana regen and some shaman buffs (mana regen) you're good to go. You've got crafted bows that does AE snare, short mana regen burst buff etc. You can basically pull as much as you want as long if you can handle them. The outdoor world is a rangers playground in Vanguard. From the get go, rangers are the best class to play in that game. Another game would be EQ 1. Endless quiver, Archery Mastery, Trueshot discipline line of abilities, you'll be critting for over 25-30k damage easily.

I'm trying out DDO atm and it seems fun so far. Loving the depth of detail you go into with your character and the level of customization. Maybe i should revisit vanguard but i swear i tried the 14 day trial and didnt get very far with it. Plus like i said, oldschool.

There's no reason to force yourself into playing Vanguard if you didn't like it, that's what trials are for!

Anyway, you have plenty of games to try, if you'll get bored with DDO that is.
