I've got a couple questions to pose to you guys...
I'm pretty much a noob in EVE still, have started and quit the game 2 times prior but lately been sticking with it mainly because of the recent excitements of tyrannis and future updates involving walking in stations, dust, etc...
Question 1. Do you guys think the walking in stations will create an environment that will help to draw a female base? (of the several mmo's i've played, EVE has the LOWEST female base of them all... I suspect it's because of the cut throat mentality of pirate ganking, the lack of avatars you can dress up ...this is a fact women like, we all know this... and the generally harsh nature of space gaming even the non combat proffs are rough and subject to pirates)
Question 2. Will walking on stations introduce some new non combat proffs to the game? i.e. clothing vendors, entertainers, etc.... let me mention a couple mmo's that had a GOOD deal of females in game.... SWG, massive amounts of ladies were chefs, clothing vendors, crafters, etc..... another one with a high degree of women is SL, like it or not, women flock to it guys....do you know why? clothing. dancing. general clubbing mentality. fact.
As I sit and play Eve at night next to my girlfriend who plays LOTRO with several other women in her guild, and I notice NONE in my corp....i can't help but wonder if the world of EVE is lacking something.
The anti carebear mentality may be all cool to the 13 yr old eve player, but to the adult player who LIKES to have the ladies play too and appreciates that dynamic is wondering if something needs to adjust a little.
and i know women do play EVE, just nowhere NEAR the same lvl as other mmo's I've been in
let the gank fest begin....

What does your girlfriend think about you wishing there were more females for you to play with in EVE?

I don't quite get why developers should design games for a stereotypical "gamer woman". They should design a game first according to their vision and make it fun for the people they want in their game.
If the particular design attracts a different demography than others, I don't see a problem with that.
Having said that, my corp had a fair share of women playing in various positions. Some of the best scouts in my alliance are female. Ambulation will not change anything in that department.
I highly doubt that a separate minigame area will attract a demography that was not interested in Eve in the first place. It's not like CCP is making a new game there.
I'd be pretty surprised if there were people who will only come to Eve because of Avatars. There won't be enough possibilities there.
CCP said something about new production possibilities. But knowing them, it'll probably just be new bpos, used with the old, cumbersome S&I interface.
I would bet that most women that play Eve would never publically admit they are female for extremely obvious reasons.
1. Yes - although I disagree with the idea that women are scared off by the harsh nature. There are plenty of harsh cutthroat women out there just as many as men. Lack of avatars are probably the biggest factor. Spaceships only go so far. Women like to be creative and artistic more than men do and not having an avatar to express that creativity is a game killer.
2. Maybe - but don't get ahead of yourself. People have been talking about this walking in stations thing for what almost four years now? Still waiting... Get the toons done then lets see what happens.
Walking in stations or Incarna is what I am most excited about in EVE. If CCP came out tomorrow and said we're not adding Incarna, I'd cancel my accounts a few minutes later.
I read the blog. I still do not get it.
Fleetmate: Quick, need help - somebody undock!
Toon: Sorry, got to shower, change, get back in my pod - twenty to thirty minutes good for you? Be right there...

Any word on the release of Incarna?
Even then, when Incarna (WIS) hits the server sometime, EvE will not change at all and be just as attractive or not for the possible players like it is today.
Incarna (WIS) doesn't really offer playable content that interacts with the rest of EvE, so even if some people may try EvE after Incarna is implemented, they'll just leave as fast as they got attracted, as they've got nothing to do then walking down the promenade or play a mini-game in the bar.
EvE is what it is, it's about blowing up spaceships and gathering ressources to build new spaceships to get blown up again.
Incarna (WIS) won't change anything there.
It's almost like your going to have to have two seperate games and screens running to have both games interact with each other
You should try and exersise some imagination there are plenty of things that can be done with WIS.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
Wasn't me not imagining anything. CCP themselves said it, that WIS will have no real impact on the rest of the game to prevent the tea-spoon-effect.
I disagree here. Oh, as far as what is done in the game - nah, nothing. I think it will increase the overall load on the login servers, make local in hubs all but impossible to deal with, and generally degrade performance... it will do plenty (of bad), one need only not hide in the denial while off setting themselves up for dismal failure at the realization that all of their expectations have led to them being let down.
Have to admit, it does make me laugh when people say think of all the possibilities - use your imagination!
Well, if these people had any imagination - they would not need humanoid avatars, and CCP could focus working on things that matter to folks that realize this is a game of internet spaceships and spreadsheets.

Lots of great comments...
however...
I wholeheartedly disagree that women are as cutthroat as men (there are always exceptions, but really really far inbetween compared to the general)
I know of 3 women directly that have seen the game, showed a slight interest at first and then absolutely said "no way" when they saw a gank squad get away with killing a miner or stealing a jetcan and get away with it......(and tha'ts fine for space) Confrontation is still a man's game in general. (again, there are some exceptions, but not so many)
but... again, i'm going to use a game that had a much higher percentage of women ....swg. there were PLENTY of NON combat proffessions, ones that were used in game and thrived without ever entering a ship. (image designer, dancer, entertainer, musician, etc) all of which provided a valuable service for the combat strong. Most of the women that played these roles in game LOVED it for just that and had no interest in going out and blasting away at things... the concept is the same here. and someone who dismisses this outright clearly has not experienced it. Wars have been fought and corporations have been destroyed over women, don't give me that line that it's nothing.
If ccp gives some thought into this, they'll have created a gender balance in the game that could massively increase player base. I'm not way off here either, it's completely within reason.
of course it's just a game...
but i hope you realize your line of reasoning is the exception and not the rule in mmo gaming.
In the beginning WIS was suppose to be completely avoidable/fluff, but this has been changed as is hinted at in the teaser. They will however still not have combat to prevent the tea-spoon effect.
Wouldn't be surprised if they change their goals for Incarna again.
How so? Whether you are in WoW, CoH, DDO, LotRO, AION, EQ, EVE, etc ad nauseum - if there is something you cannot do in a game that you want to do . . . you use your imagination to pretend you are doing it, no?
Heck, think of all the people in FFXI that pretend hitting their space button is making them jump?
In EVE, you have your avatar - it is whatever ship you are in. Much like how your appearance in other games changes when you change armor/outfits, your appearance in EVE changes when you change ships. How much time do you spend completely naked in other MMOs? Then why do you want to be naked in EVE?

I don't disagree that viewing your ship as your avatar is acceptable in EVE...
however....
in the context of an avatar, and walking in stations, ....completely different. I have no real issue with space part/combat/sim (would prefer more animations for ship/structure explosions or weapon effects than there are now but no biggie.. i.e. homeworld 2 ship explosion)
when you are a person, not a ship, you have a natural set of expectations. when you are playing a human as a human, it's way different than when you are playing a ship or pilot of a ship. this is a socialogical rule of humans. you behave differently when you drive a car too, etc..
I'm most interested in ccp making a REASON for ppl to interact on a station...i.e. non combat needed skills that directly help the other functioning needs of the game. example-- before tyrannis and before dust we didn't touch planets....now we do, they created a whole new reason to interact with planets...and dust will further create a need for players to interact with planets.....natural progression in my opinion.
creating an ability to walk onto a station to look around is pointless.... but if say you could go onto a station to get a drink buff that gives you a 3 hour buff to targeting speed...hmmmmm....i can see going there right now. can you?
...ok maybe I just haven't been around that long...but that sounds like complete and utter rubbish.
Are you suggesting that video gamers LARP at the time as playing video games? I might be out of touch, but the average gamer, even at the nerdiest, doesn't sit there playing a game where he takes the skin of an ancient barbarian warrior in a land of magic and mystery, AND sits in his apartment pretending to cast "Magic Missile" at his keyboard.
I see the merits of your EVE-related points, but the "pretending to jump" button, posed as a serious supporting fact, really doesn't help your argument.

I don't know about you guys. But I can think of 101 reasons why Incarna is going to be good for EVE. It's just going to add to the game, in fact I think CCP are aiming for the ultimate Sci-Fi simulator.
1, It's going to completely add a new dimension and game interactivity.
2, Can you imagine, if you want to capture an alliance station. You have to board it and actually clear out the former owners in full hand to hand combat as well as taking over the system.
3, The possibility's of owning and running your very own public house, casino, shop, etc.
4, You could be sent on missions inside stations to assassinate somebody, capture, etc.
Those are just some quick ideas, but the possibility's are endless. And once you add stations, it's only a step away ”forgive the pun ,” from walking on planets and moons and who knows what else. I think it's just going to add to the game. Until now they never had the technology, but I've got news for you, since EVE was launched. Technology as evolved along way and it will continue to do so.
I for one am looking forward to Incarna, simple because it opens the doors to new possibility's and new adventures in the EVE universe.
It is a joke. There is no jump in FFXI. There will be no jump in the next one. It is funny, but if you ask the majority of people - they probably have no idea about either of the games other then the fact some people complain that there is no jump and some people complain about those complaining.
It is the signatures of several people, that they are pressing the space button - hoping it does something, pretending it does something...

Getting back to some of the OP's points about female gamers finding EVE more appealing once Incarna goes live...
...Granted I don't expect the actual "game" of EVE (as far as space/ships/combat/mining/etc.) to change drastically. However, when you see this tech demo of the APEX clothing and hair system (I believe it's for the World of Darkness MMO but will also be implemented in EVE station walking)... http://www.mmorpg.com/showVideo.cfm/videoId/1657
You can imagine that at least a few female gamers who weren't interested in EVE previously may give it a second look, if for nothing else than to sit in the station trying on clothes and socializing and admiring the beauty of the engine.
In any case, it would help those of us male gamers with female counterparts (girlfriends, wives, simulated femme-bots, etc.) to get them to play the game with us...
Someone at some point made a statement about "Bogging down Local chat and any station with a hub..." ...yeah I don't think that the folks sitting at a game table in a cantina-of-sorts will be at the same time broadcasting to all ship frequencies with everything they say to the person across the table from them.
"Watch out, gank gang near Asteroid Belt III."
"Need assistance?"
"More of them incoming, just warped in as I got out."
"I move my rook to King 4."
"*sigh*...please be quiet if you're in the station."
"Can I buy you a drink, madame?"
"Check out my new hot pants!"
"DUDE SHUT UP!!"
"Wewt I love the Night Elf Dance...hawt."
Makes about as much sense in the game world as it would if the in-game world were reality. I'd bet they'd be on seperate chat channels at the very least, once you leave your ship you don't have the solar-system-wide transmitter attached to you anymore.
As far as lag, I'd almost expect them to be on a different server or shard or whatever.
