There's so much stuff I'd like to tell you all about in the version update notes but can't... but damn, there's a lot of stuff, some of which we haven't even heard of before.
Maybe I can give my honest opinion about what I'm reading though: "Soloing" in this game is truly for the Real "casuals" (the ones with 1h playtime a day), the rest of us better get used to partying, in a casual or hardcore way .
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Well there goes all hope of FFXIV being my next MMO. I don't care how good the auto-translate feature is. I just find it ridiculous that SE still thinks this is a good idea.
FFXI was completely ruined for me because I couldn't communicate with half the people I met. The ingame translation tools were utter crap, and I couldn't even say something as simple as "yes" or "no" to the japanese players everywhere. Totally ruined the game for me. Now, this was back when the game first launched so maybe it got better, but I didn't stick around to find out.
Why the hell should I have to put up with people speaking a dozen plus languages and having a hard time finding groups that can communicate well. It destroys the ability to form PUGs, which in turn hurts your ability to make new friends, seeing as how you can't understand half of them. I don't have xenoglossophobia or anything... it just seems incredibly silly that SE continues to do their servers this way, the opposite of every MMO i've ever heard of.
I think that this time around the importance of this issue is going to be considerably lessened 'cause you'll be able to choose your own server at launch. I'm sure there are going to be "unofficial" English speaking servers and whatnot.

NDAs make me saaaaaaadface.
Is the soloing bit because of the rewards gained just aren't good enough? or are you not allowed to say?

When Aion launched in the US there was an "unofficial role play" server. I can't remember the name of it, but I was curious to how the word spread enough about it to make other people aware that this was the place to be to RP.
I like the ideal of people from different countries playing together but only if a majority of the population goes along with it. If too many on the server decide to split along language lines and not group with people they cant speak with then it is an awful idea.
Thinking back to my time in FFXI, I can recall only a few times that I did not rejoice about getting invited to a leveling group made up of Japanese players, or hanging out with a group of Australians, etc. Even when playing WoW, my server had a strong population of French Canadians, most of whom spoke no English, and my French is worse than my German (e.g. none), yet we found ways to communicate even without an auto-translator. For those who have never experienced it, I wouldn't worry, for those who have, let's hope the vocabulary is a little more expansive.

Indeed it did/does, so does that mean that the NDA has been lifted? or does Beta = Alpha - Final Phase?
You can think of linkshells as invite only chat rooms. What I loved about them in XI was that they could serve an infinite number of uses because you could belong to as many linkshells as you could hold (inventory space).
So you could belong to you "Guild". And then you might find an active raiding linkshell and a crafting linkshell you wanted to keep tabs on. I liked the comparison to social networking as that is essentially what it was (Linkshells being groups with some common interest such as raiding, crafting, trading, your reallife buddies, etc..) The only downside was that there was no highly developed guild/uber linkshell feature.
It sounds like Companies are more akin to "Guilds" in other games and I'm glad they did this.

Awww quit teasing us! :P
Glad to hear SE has kept up the party focus though!
Really great job Hyanmen on this write-up. You're credit to the FFXI's old school community. I've already pre-ordered, but I have some questions:
My load times for the benchmark were in the 40k's. If this will only effect my load times, I don't mind waiting an extra 2 seconds. But if you think it will also effect combat or other parts of the game, I may need to get a faster HDD.
Other than that, do you have any controllers you recommend that will work well for the PC? I have my old Xbox type controller that I used for FXI.
Aww, there's quite a bit I don't like. Was really hoping for something different. Ah well.. Lots of other games coming out. Hopefully one of those will suit me.

I don't think it'll affect combat in any way.
Wired Xbox 360 controller works well I think.

All I can say is superb job Hyanmen, preordered the game today...CE for only 65 $ bucks which is an absolute steal.
Alough I despise the no localized server idea there are just too many things I really like in this game. Seems like they're combining sandbox with themepark features. Loving the fact that you can freely customize your stats.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Can't say for sure yet lol

Nope. It's not as strict, but it's definitely still there.
So, what can be shared now? Maybe a complete class list? or maybe info on the Retainer system?
We wait with baited breath.

I noticed that you are updating the thread topic as it goes along, so forgive me if this has been asked already.
Q. Will there be a built-in Voice Comm?

I am actually OK with this personally. I tend to only use voice chat when a guild I am in requires it or maybe a group I am in.
You can only have one char/account?
