These race choices, hmm

OzivoisOzivois Member UncommonPosts: 598

I never played the older Final Fantasy MMO but I really don't care what races they had there.  It doesn't mean they have to use them here.

But whats the deal  with the race that looks like 5-year old children??? Are we supposed to take them seriously?  What kind of sicko came up with that idea?

That giant guy is a bit disappointing  with that undersized, non-intimidating head.

Cat-girl reaks of an overdone FTP MMO class, e.g., Archlord

So it's choose between human (effeminate male or tomboy) or the goat boy/girl with those goat ears.  Choices, choices...

It seems they are unneccessarily limiting us to few race selections.  I guess all I can hope is that they are going to suprise us with some more!

Am I the only one thinking this?  Please give me the smack down if I am off base here

Sorry you think the choices are lame.....

But something on my mind, and no offense to you sir, what happened to beta testers these days, I have tested several games and follow by the strict rules in place.  Have people forgotten that they agreed to a NDA.  Looks like people just click accept nowadays just to get to the next screen.

And you wonder why games get shitty subs/responses cause people ruin it before it's made public.

  • KuatosuneKuatosune Member UncommonPosts: 219

Didn't see anything in the prior posts that break an NDA for the game but anyhows to each his own on the races if you don't like it don't play that simple.

What does his complaint/concern about the race choices have to do with beta, that info is public knowledge and you can get a pretty good idea what they'll look like in game from the benchmark tool if you really wanted to.  Frankly I think the female of the elfin race is freakishly disproportionate, its personal choice.

FFXIV has the typyical archetypal race choices big, human, elf, small, etc.  Their art style just presents them differently like every other game.  They don't ALWAYS have to be tolkienesque, and I'm really tired that there's nothing more unique these days.  One of the few things I'd applaude EQ2 for would be better than average variety of race choices, even if their engine makes most of the humanoid ones pretty grotesque.

First off, please don't call me sir.  "I work for a living".  It's Oz

Secondly, I am not a beta tester, I am just expressing my opinion from what I saw at their website.

I believe the game will be pretty awesome and I plan on playing it - just thought I would share an opinion after all this is a forum

@torment: I agree with the comments about EQ2 races

I was initially bummed out by the race choices.  Having enjoyed FF for so many years, I was curious to see what new/epic races SE would make for FFXIV, and then seeing its the same ones from FFXI I was like "awww sad face."

But then I saw a leaked weaponlist and went "OMFG a whip!  There's a @#%^$ing whip!"  /calls friends "No stop playing wow and come play with this whip!"   "No, it's a whip!" ahahahahahahahahaa

I agree to an extent, but I've been disappointed in most MMOs of the fantasy genre and their race list.

FFXIV isn't a game for people who like alts anyway. Considering you have to pay for them and there's no real reason to have them. Plus the creator is an improvement over XI's, but still meh at best.

That aspect of their MMO just doesn't seem like a huge priority, but if you think about most Asian MMOs it never really is.

If there is anything I've learned in the past slew of Final Fantasies it is that SE is really good at reusing old content.

Well there's room for them in Final Fantasy, but there's other stock races they've used at times. I think the Ivalice races would've been an interesting addition. Playing as a moogle would be cool. Final Fantasy IX had some unique aspects on the beings living in that world. Summonors being born horned would be cool to see again, but often their epic gear calls back to it.

    Something inspired.

With your statement it seems like you'd be disappointed they're just using XI's established races renamed even more so than the OP.

I'd like to also add that since they've had the catgirl and have done it before why not the Cleyran?

I'd definitely like to see a few races from Ivalice...

My response is mainly because the OP didn't elaborate any, if he/she doesn't like the races then what exactly would they suggest? Seems like every other MMO does the Orc Dwarve Human combo...

In fairness he says sicko, the only clue that he thinks there's something wrong with playing a character that resembles a young child... you are the one who said sexual.  Sometimes how we interpret words is much like a rorschach test.

But a lot of Final Fantasy fans have a common trait, something unfamiliar is usually seen as BAD.

I'm going to try the game regardless. But it is a disappointing aspect. I think even more so than 'no jumping*'.

Where is there anything sexual in his post? I read the "sicko" comment to mean that these characters will be subjected to quite a lot of violent situations and he didn't think having his avatar look like a 5-year old was a good idea.

You need to look at yourself first buddy.

What I want to know is how he got "goats" from the elvaan race... I just don't see it at all!

And where was the OP 8-9 years ago when FFXI first came out with these nearly same exact races?

I personally love the Tarus, and I usually hate the short people (dwarves, gnomes, etc).  Not sure why you think they look like children?  I guess I can see it, but they look more like humanoid squirrels (or something similar) to me.

I love the Mithras too.  Not only have they been around longer than the cat people in Arch Lord, but Neko is popular in Japan...

Anyway, the FF races seem much more original to me than other games, aside from Humans and Elves.

    1. Not playing FFXI makes it difficult for your argument to be effective, especially when the reason that these races are being used is to largely give a feeling of familiarity to FFXI players that begin to play FFXIV.

    2. The Lallafel(sp?) are designed to look that way and that is part of their charm. That race is rather popular, much like the Tarutaru race is in FFXI. I'm not sure why a sicko had to come up with this or you seem to want to take it in that direction.

    3. The Galka-esque characters are incredibly similar to their FFXI counter-parts. This is simply how they look. I'm not sure why this should or should not be intimidating, it's simply the character design.

    4. The Miqo'te(sp?), the Mithra-esque 'class,' really should not be compared to "FTP MMO [classes]" because there is a really lacking false analogy there. Should we say the same thing about classes that use swords and magic, too? Of course not, and please understand that this is a racial choice and not a class. Do not confuse or conflate the two. Please, please, pay attention.

    5. S-E is not unnecessarily limiting race choices, they are following their plan. That is what S-E does and why FFXI followed a very rigid path since its release, doing very little that was innovative within thier game when it was out and keeping things that weren't very user-friendly (i.e. keeping the 3-level groups for parties for many years instead of bringing out the LevelSync functionality earlier than 2008). With that said, how many racial choices do you want or would you think are appropriate? EQ2 has a phenomenal amount of racial choices but FFXIV is not EQ2. Please limit your expectations to what has been announced. Understand that S-E has a plan for each game and, truly, they do not deviate from that plan. Ever, or so it seems. Some FF games can really be an acquired taste and FFXI and, really, FFXI-2 (FFXIV) is an acquired taste as well.

Your comments are really rather off-base and I suggest that you take a deeper look at what is going on before posting.

Seems to me there is a simple solution to this simple problem. If you don't like the choices you have for a race don't play the game.

It's a fundamental issue. Don't expect to like the game if you don't like a fundamental part of it.

This is a very good point. Much like grind is a fundamental part of AION and some people really don't like that. That isn't (and shoudln't, yes, shouldn't) change because that is a fundamental part of the game. Some like it and some don't; so too the racial choices and their basis in FFXIV.
