No, I'm not trying to hate on the game, I'm simply curious to why it's so hyped. Sure I understand that it belongs to one of the largest video game franchises on earth, and I doubt it will be a bad game, I'm just genuinely curious to why it's so popular.
I've never played FFXI, or any Final Fantasy game for that matter. I know very little about the game. I just want to know what makes this game stand out. SWTOR is making a big deal about story, Tera is making a big deal out of it's combat and GW2 is making a big deal out of being innovative and different. So enlighten me, why is Final Fantasy so great? Will there be epic storytelling? Will there be a dynamic world? Will there be a deep character customization system? You tell me!
This statement is false.

I'd say you just answered you're own question.
FFXI had top notch story and lore, and a great world to explore, as will XIV, and character customization seems like it will be pretty in depth, since you'll be able to switch between classes just by switching weapons and mix and match skills from different classes.
But you're right, FFXIV isn't pushing a specific gimick, but if you do a little research you'll see there's some pretty innovative features like the guild-leave system, and armory system.
Like you stated, its a big franchise with a lot of followers so the hype is always there. As for the game itself, I admit I haven't been following the game very thoroughly but from the little bit information SE released especially the classless system its intruiging. Otherwise yes, I don't really know what the hype is around gameplay since details are very scarce and the beta seems to be very limited so I guess we'll just wait and see how it goes.
I think the hype is that big because of all the FF11 players who just love the game and because of there good time in FF11 now have really high hopes for 14.
If 14 can hold up to the hype well that we will have to see in the near future.
However since u said u never played 11 lemme just guive u some personal reasons for me why i have high expertations for 14.
FF11 had really nice story's every single one of the storylines was done good and much fun to play.
FF11 has the best endgame from all MMOs out there even tho u might find a few who disagree but most of them didn't even make it to endgame lol.
The class system was some sweet shit with the sub job system and the ability to learn all classes on 1 character u really had a lot of choices (ok in the end not that many since there of course were better combos and some which were just ridiculous)
One downside from 11 was the lvling (at least for most players i personally loved it as well) it was almost impossible to lvl solo u always had to find a group to pt and that could lead to long waiting times for an pt invite (there were just too many Damage Dealer and not enough tanks/Refresher around to get a good pt rolling) while this could frustrate u from time to time did it also bring the players cl9oser together meaning once u found good ppls to play with u tried to stick with them.
In no other mmo so far did i manage to get that good of an online friendship with other players
I can only tell you my reason for being hyped about it.
I have played close to a dozen mmos. Not a single one made me feel part of the world and so immersed as FFXI. The music, the difficulty, the fact that you had one character that did everything, etc.... Addmittedly, I dont' have much of an imagination.... it really takes a great game that is deep in story/music/lore, to capture my attention and feel a part of the world.
So... since FFXI was the only game where I felt that, I'm hoping FFXIV is the same way.
That's my personal reason for being excited about FFXIV'S release.
Yeah, I also played FFXI and I must admit I'm quite eager to try FFXIV but lets be real.. was FFXI that good? Yes, the music is simply awesome, being able to be any class with one character also rulled since I don't like making alts.. but was the game itself that good? I remember waiting 3hours for a group that would disband 5min after being formed.. I remember running from 1 corner of a map to the other with a train of goblins after me just because I accidently aggroed one of them.. leveling was simply grinding.. compared with nowadays MMO, FFXI is finished in what touches "flexibility".
From what I've seen of FFXIV, it is just a copy paste of FFXI with better graphics and a new system.. having in mind that SQUARE-ENIX rarely learns with their mistakes.. I'm not hoping for much out of FFXIV. Just check the gameplay, combat is the same old boring action of FFXI..
Well even if its the same game, the new version suits todays industry standards both graphically and gameplay wise so i wouldn't say that having the same game is necessarily a bad thing hell some people often dream of old games being updated to todays standards. So yes, even if its the same game I think many people would be more inclined to play the game now rather than a 8 year old game.
Square-Enix is one of the most over-hyped companies in the gaming business. It makes sense that their games would be as well. I don't have any doubts that FFXIV will be a good game - it's not going to touch a fraction of WoW's numbers though. I expect it to do roughly as well as Aion, once the dust has cleared.
i have high hopes for this game because of FFXI, but ffxi was far from perfect. altho flawed, i still had an amazing and immersive time in game and im hoping XIV can deliver that also.
one of the things i loved about FFXI that i hope carries over is the refinement and strategy that combat brings. there was a level of difficulty that made the game interesting. i remember seeing skillchains and magic bursts (coordinated attacks that granted addition effects or damage if done in proper sequence and timed right) for the first time and realizing that this game was so much more involved that other spamming mmo's. the steep learning curve was a total blast to learn. strategies varied so much it made new levels exciting for me. i never got too into WoW or any other mmo like i did with FFXI so i might be off base when i say that strategy wasn't as intense. i just didn't feel the level of variety in other mmos. the combinations from subjobs and the number of classes was amazing. since it isn't released yet none of us can say right now how special XIV is but it's got a great bloodline imo. then again final fantasy titles r usually love 'em or hate 'em without middle ground.

THere is nothing special about it. Just some Fanboys struggeling to find theyr new true mmorpg.
MMorpgs have died after 2002, when they started to copy everything from each other.
Now lets few 1-2year and see the new action orientaded mmorpgs coming along. Maybe were getting dissapointed too, who knows?
But FF14 is not special at all. Adding some new features, wont make it mind-blowing. Maybe the fanbois gona like it ( i was once too), but for me Squaresoft died after ff9. All they make now is Bs.
It tries to be an MMORPG.
You know, instead of being a one trick pony (combat) it tries to be a world you play in. No unnecessary instancing, no NPC-driven economies, no massive solo-fests. Crafting matters, gathering matters.
But in the end, I don't find it so "special". It's just a good game.
At risk of repeating others my fascination with FFXIV is due to my love of FFXI.
So many games are just a level treadmill but with FFXI there is so much more. As well as the great story and missions it is the nearest thing to a sand-box of all the AAA MMOs. I spent ages in the game crafting, or gardening, or chobobo raising, or fishing. These had more depth than most games crafts and were lots of fun.
The fact you can level any job is superb and a huge reason why I am so interested. If you take a job to say level 23 and then decide on something else it is always there. It may be used as a subjob later and the money and skills learnt help other jobs to some extent.
FFXI was not my first MMO, but it is my favourite by a big distance. FFXIV 'appears' to offer much of what I love but with interesting changes I'm keen to try. Just got my new PC up and running and looking forward to September.
As a side note:
I'm disappointed by the above posters who moan about the hype. There is very little hype except by that which the community itself is developing. you cannot blame players who have enjoyed FF games in the past taking an active interest.
Yeah there's nowhere near as much hype for this game as there are for other games. And the only reason for having the hype it has right now is that it's coming out in 2 months.
Compared to any other previous MMO, I don't think this is anything. There's more reserved interest than massive "OMG BEST GAEM EVAR" hype which I think works better in the long run.
i don't think square is up there with the most hyped. they're usually tight lipped and their games usually appeal to a smaller market. they put out a different style of gaming that appeals to a different type of gamer. most of their fans know that u cant really sell ur friends on a final fantasy game because its just not for everyone. i think they have a track record of decent to great games, but i dont think they compare to other hype that other companies get. lol i just had to check their website cause i wasn't sure what other games they're putting out soon. the mmo report hardly mentions them.
blizzards got blizzcon for crying out loud lol. i called in sick for when MW2 launched. bungie invented midnight launches. lol i don't really think square is in their league yet.
as for the player base... well i don't think any of us r expecting WoW numbers. XIV launches in sept. and i haven't really seen mainstream advertising.

Maybe this is halfway offtopic but the comparisment of WoW and FF in terms of player numbers is hilarious.
On FFXI players are generally older than on other MMOs. Most people will be at least 25+. I once joined a guild (we call it linkshell) which was run by a guy and his wife who played together and both were 60 years old. You won't bump into any teenagers that will brag about their equipment before they challenge you to a point and click pvp fight.
What makes the game special to me? I'm already addicted to leveling my Conjurer and I enjoy the storyline - at least the small bits they showed us so far.
Additionally it's not as naive as FFXI was anymore. NPCs will constantly make humorous sexual comments. When you try to join the blacksmith guild for example the npc will turn you down and compare your chances of how likely it is to join the guild: "And maybe I thinks that the Admiral will invite me up to her bedchamber for a night o' poundin' the anvil!"
Shocking that everyone has opinions, eh?
What is so special about any game? Fans of a series, a dev team, or in general form opinions based on information and whatever game they are looking at attains a specialness to them. Everyone has different tastes, and hype, regardless of how much is out there, is all in your head.
To me you seem to be confused. It is special to me because FFXI was one of my favorite games of all times and by far my favorite MMO, and the devs are making the MMO with their own fans in mind which includes me. I am sick of devs selling out to try to copy WoW so this is another aspect that makes this game special to me. I am a huge FF fan and remember pulling all nighters when I was 5 or 6 years old playing FF1 on NES. Should I keep going?
You are kind of right with your statement since Squaresoft really doesn't exist anymore since it was only used as a Brand name between 1992 and 2003 from Square Co., Ltd which than merged with Enix in 2003 and is now known as Square Enix.
However to say MMOs died after 2002 and they started to copy everything from each other sounds strange since FF11 was released in 2002 and so far i wouldn't know any game really which copied it....
Well actually i struggle now to see any real information's in your post which maybe could be because of the fact that u seem to not be informed at all but that's just my personal opinion and u of course have a right to state your opinion here so lets just settle for
Squaresoft is dead....Long Live Square Enix
I think FFXIV will be the first mmorpg to become successful after the long series of failures. FFXI had a long, solid running and when people can see that, they're more willing to put time into a game. It's odd in a way to think so, but SE might have just as much mmorpg experience as just about any other company.
I think they'll be able to get a good mix of ease and complexity into the game. They also seem to have some pretty fresh ideas compared to other software companies. Their story telling probably surpasses any other company out there in the mmorpg field.
It is not that special lol. To some of us that liked XI and some of the other FF games it is a new game to play that promises a lot of things. While I hope it delivers on those promises it does not mean that it will deliver on all of them, think of it like a president running for office or any other polititian running, they promise all these things and then they deliver on some but not all of them. One can just wait and see what comes about when the game is finally out there to be played.
I did enjoy the time I spent in XI and hope to enjoy my time in XIV as well, where there issues with the game or things that just sucked about XI? Yup there where and even through all that I still played it until I jumped on the WoW band wagon. While I enjoyed WoW since it was providing me with something that fixed the issues I saw in XI. At this point I am jaded with how WoW has turned out, yes there is a lot of content, yes some of it is hard, but the community for the most part is terrible. Yes you do have great people out there, I was in a decent guild and most of them where great. We had a problem child or 2 but hey every guild has that. But its more than that that has really mest my mind up about WoW. So since I am tired of WoW and I enjoyed XI I am going to buy XIV and play it and hope to have something that will keep me entertained for a number of years.
And if the game does not deliver and I get tired of it, well there is always other games out there that are coming out that I can try. But first I will give XIV a chance.
It has what i wish every MMO would incorporate.
The ability to level every class on one character.
I only liked the FF tactics games, otherwise I never understood the interest in any of the Final Fantasy games. From what I hear, each game had little in common with the previous...
I'm free on Friday.
Now that is quite interesting...
This made me lol. Thank you.
My theme song.
No, I'm wrong? I only played three games in the entire series...
I'm free on Friday.
'Cause it's our only hope for an MMO that doesn't cater to the soloers and the casuals. Also 'cause it's the sequal to the greatest MMO of all time.
