I went back to playing WOW after 4 years out of boredom. I wanted some mindless effortless fun. I had been playing for 2 months and found out yesterday my account is hacked and my level 70 toons from before are gone. The current level 20 toon i was playing is also gone.
I called support and the call volume was so high the couldnt take my call. I looked in the forums and see this is an epidemic.
Who needs this hassle I can play RPM or Allods and not deal with this BS.

Sucks when that happens just play Allods till thwy get back to you
March on! - Lets Invade Pekopon
I was hacked several times already. I'm done totaly.
They just want to force you to buy the authenticator.
I'm not usually the type of guy to call doom and "the sky is falling", but maybe this big amount of accounts hacked is the start of the fall of wow if they dont put a stop at it.
Please note is just a maybe
I was recently hacked and I am sure there was no key logger on my machine.
I sent a request via the form on the wow site and I must admit once I was able to login again all my missing items where there for me in the mail. I ended up getting the authenticator (it was only 50p for my mobile) and don’t have too much of an issue now.
I must say one thing though, since battlenet and your email account are the same login DONT have the same password for the email and wow account. That’s where I failed and will make sure I keep those passwords separate. A mate texted me and told me my toon had stolen everything from the guild bank. I immediately changed the wow password and when I logged into my email got a lovely message saying that someone from Korea had logged into my account.
If this ever happens again I think I will call it quits since I don’t want the hassle of having to deal with a hacked account every once in a while. Hopefully the authenticator does solve the issue of hackers sniffing your login details.
When you say 'no support' what you actually mean is that there was no support in the time that you allowed them to give you support??
The thing i always love about these posts is people make it sound like WoW is the only game that has accounts hacked when in reality games like Allods and pretty much any other out there has the same issues. Wow is bigger and the most popular at the moment which makes it the prime target of course, but not the only target by a long shot.
A couple of guildies have been hacked, both admittedly their own fault and both had their accounts back, all their gear as well as any guild items taken being returned to us as well. Vault items were returned to us within hours, accounts were returned within a few days in both cases.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
I had the same thing. Difference is, I emailed them and got my characters back in a few days.
If you're not even gonna try, why complain?
What a stupid comment.
The solution OP is not to get hacked.
Getting hacked is your own fault. Blizzard merely offers an extra layer of security for a whopping 55 cents (mobile phone authenticator app).
Might wanna start caring about your internet security, paid or non-paid. Whatever gets the job done.
I say it time and time again, if you used any add-ons, ever, you opened the door for the hackers. Again, Blizzard's add-on policy is rather vague and inconsistent with the EULA note: folks need to understand that modifying the game experience is what add-ons do, period). That said, Blizzard doesn't deserve your support for facilitating this very situation.
Will these situations get players to better protect themselves? No, of course not, and that is very unfortunate. WIll these situation get Blizzard to better protect their players? No, of course not, and it's very clear that Blizzard is very eager and willing to test just how far they can push most of their playerbase: just look at RealID.
That said, there are plenty of games coming out in the near future and some damn good console games and 'old' MMORPGs out that can certainly fill the void. Best of luck, and mind the rules.
(1)TL:DR must be your way of saying that thinking hurts. Then again, this may explain why it looks like you responded to the post without using your brain.
(2) It's not about community, is it? You just have nothing better to do.
Would you please stop spreading this misinformation? Did an addon run over your dog or something?
Addons have the same security issues as the Internet in general. A malicious website can exploit a security hole to infect your system. A fake file can contain a virus if you do not understand what you are downloading. An actual addon cannot compromise your account in any way.
55p may not be a lot but its a clear way to rake in a bit more cash.
Why don't blizzard make the authenticator free if its needed? Greedy little bastards tbh. (I bet activision had a thing to do with all this battle.net and authenticator stuff)
It's your responsibility to keep your information safe.
At work, I see people that don't even deserve to touch a computer. I've seen computers damaged beyond repair because of all the shit they installed and downloaded. Complaining, oh my computer won't work. When I finally figure out the problem, because people can fuck up some software, guess who's fault it is, the user.
At work/home/school, people fail to update their computer/software and wonder where they get the virus/malware on their computer. They shrug off updates like it's the coming on the plague. UPDATE YOUR SHIT!! People sit at home all day and try to figure out what vulnerabilities in the OS's (the most popular ones) to try and get your information. When they release an UPDATE, that means they found a vulnerability and someone can get your shit.
How can Developers be held responsible for something you should be taking care of on your own. It's no wonder you can never reach customer support, with all the stupid people in the world calling at once.
I love all the "get an authenticator, it only costs you $X" crap. Show me another game that basically forces you to get additional security because the corporation heading the game doesn't have enough encryption and security to keep hackers out.....oh wait....right.
Bliz has lost all my business as of the RealID bullshit.
I got the authenticator for free for my phone. And an adorable in-game pet to boot!
As far as the original post goes, my account was compromised about a year and a half ago. I got an email from Blizzard about the account and contacted them by phone. Within about 15 minutes I was back in the game and getting my toons belongings from the mail.
Patience is a virtue...
So here is a dancing banana, just for you!
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I dunno about the OP's situation, but I know from guild mates getting hacked that Blizzard is pretty damn quick at getting you your gear/toons back. And as another poster stated, some games don't even bother and just ban the account.
I do know that if you happen to be a repeat customer (someone who gets hacked multiple times in a short span of time) Blizzard might move you to a longer wait time (Friend of mine got hacked several times in less than a month because he couldnt't take simple advice - if at first you don't succeed, format and start again to be safe...). First time he was hacked his account was restored in less than 24 hours. Second time was about 24 hours as well. Third time it took a lil over 48 hours. Fourth time took about a week and a half, and each time after that took even longer.
But anyway, if you get hacked do a full system scan with more than one Anti Virus/Anti Maleware program (one might pick up what the other missed). If you use addons, get them from a reputable site. This will cut down the risk of getting a tained file. Do not accept an addon from a friend, because no matter how clean they claim their machine is, it might not be. If after a account breach you still don't feel safe, format the PC and reinstall.
Also, avoid using public hotspots to play. You don't need to login to WoW at Mc Donalds or Starbucks while having a burger or a latte. Wireless Hotspots can easily open up security risks. Same goes for leaching someone elses wifi.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
they dont even come close to forcing u to get one of those lol, my whole family plays WoW and i played since release (till recently), i got have 4 rl friends who play, and my wife plays and only i've been hacked... (due to my own stupidity lol)
i know like.. uh.. no one in person (and i've met a lot of people in rl who play WoW) who has the authenticator.. so they don't "basically force" you to do anything
if people get hacked, its cause their dumb, not because the game has poor security.. you have poor security..
btw is your name from a warhammer book? lol
I've had my account hacked but it is my fault I used add ons. However blizzard returned ally my gear within a couple of days. I just bought an authenticator to save myself the trouble again.
no one forces you to get the extra security, but to answer your question...
Square Enix - security token

oh! and add-ons usually rnt ur source of being hacked! if u dl from curse-client.. or the website, your usually pretty.. uh.. safe.. lol
stupid LIAR 4 years ago lvls 70' toons didnt exist
on top of that u have played for 2 months and u only made it to lvl 20? BS!!
MMORPG.COM Wow Haters Unite!!!!! together we are strong even if we are playing an extremly dead game
No other legitimate reason comes to my mind of why myself, along with others, who took all necessary and due precations could have been hacked. The other alternative is to say that Blizzard's security is really that bad and I'm not sure I want to seriously go that far.
Take the time to write me a PM here to explain just why add-ons are not and cannot be an issue. Other than that, we have two informed opinions that simply are different. Thankfully, neither one of us is stupid we're simply missing something. That said, when you say that an add-on can have the same security issues as the internet you are in fact saying that an add-on can, in some real way, compromise my account. Finally, add-ons seem to be the common demoninator because we have yet to see someone saying that they have never used and add-on and have taken all necessary and due safety precations yet still be hacked.

Did you know there are several versions of the authenticator that are free?
Blizzard can't keep players from being stupid and authenticators are being offered to help protect users from themselves.
If anything, more games should offer this level of security, because no matter how secure a company is there are customers that will be idiots with their account information. Those same idiots then turn around and blame the company when they get hacked.
Blizzard needs to stop restoring accounts that are playing with altered game clients. I remember how good it sounded during WoW's beta when it was said that Blizzard was putting tools in place to deter anyone hacking the game client. That was until Thottbot started datamining and the floodgates opened. Originally, we were told that they were allowing add-ons so they could learn how to combat the hacks.
Then the suits figured out pretty quick that the inconvenience of restoring compromised accounts was far outweighed by allowing the chumps who made the add-ons to do much of the development grunt work. How else do you think that changes to the UI were instituted? They just look for the add-ons that get used the most, pick them apart, and graft them into the client without having to worry about pesky details like compensation for labor.
If you use add-ons (I won't even talk about buying gold or leveling services), you have only yourself to blame for your account being compromised.

An addon itself can not access your account information, except for your realID.
You can of course be compromised simply by visiting a site where you downloaded the addon from. Using internet explorer and not having your computer secure will do the trick.
An addon itself is 100% safe.
I don't use an authenticator and have never been hacked. Just stay safe, get some basic knowledge about internet security and phishing and make sure your password is secure enough. Hopefully that will be enough, or maybe I've just been lucky.
I am not saying you guys did anything wrong. However, the sad thing is, maybe you did not do enough right. These gold-farming, account-stealing bastards will try to get access to unsuspecting gamers' accounts. This is a known fact. These guys put some real money into R&D to develop keyloggers, other malicious software, cleverly crafted phishing mails, 'cloned sites' and even 'brute force' password breakers to gain access to 'disposable' accounts.
What is happening here is that amateurs(the gaming public) are being targeted by professional criminals(gold farmers). Blizzard is not forcing anyone to buy an authenticator. The sheer popularity of the game, and the profitability of gold farming is what is causing these accounts to be compromised.
