Isn't anyone else outraged at having to pay an additional $3.00 a month, every month for EACH character beyond the first? This is just UNACCEPTABLE to me, and a game I was looking forward to I will no longer be playing.
And yes, I understand that 1 character can do everything, but these MMOs are ostensibly role-playing games, and I like to play many alt personalities. Not to mention wanting to play ALL the races at least once.
Anyone else feel this is a gamebreaker? Cause I sure do.

Hrm...lemme think about it for a second...nope!
It doesn't bother me at all. If they do it like FFXI, then you won't need to play other races to experience their story line. Also, isn't it like $1 per extra character slot after the first?
I do think $3.00 is a bit overpriced. It should have been $1.00 regardless of if it's a mule or an alt. Still, I don't really see a problem with it. I actually would prefer to use only 1 character. My only concern is inventory space for the multiple types of gear.
I definitely understand where you're coming from, but I also can see great value in encouraging people to stick with one in-game 'persona'. I have never liked the idea that one second I might be in a group with someone who just screwed over another player or worse a group in one way or another, and then once they have pissed everyone off so that they are avoided they just go log on a new toon nobody recognizes.
When people are monetarily encouraged to stick with one character, in a way that does not limit the abilities that character can possess, this problem is entirely eliminated. The idiots, jackasses, and flakes who are only looking out for themselves quickly gain a reputation as such and through the process of elimination you are less likely to have to deal with them later in the game as everyone else starts avoiding them along with you basically making it hard for them to play.
I see this more as a way to hold people accoutable for their characters actions, and at least in FFXI I felt like it did wonders for keeping people's behavior in check. It also connects you more to that one character, and in a way (at least to me) makes the experience more realistic and therefore a bit more immersive.
The major downside of course is that it costs you more money if you truly want multiple characters for roleplaying reasons. You know what they say: one bad apple spoils the bunch...
Did you ever play FFXI? I am totally an altoholic like you. Or I am in every other game but FFXI. It totally encourages you to fully map out one personality and stick with it by giving you as many options as you can handle with one character. I assume XIV will be the same. Plus! The game is $3 a month cheaper than anything else, so for a comporable price you really get two characters. With all the time it takes to properly develop and key one character, I don't think anyone that actually sleeps would be able to do more than two...
That being said, I do understand your anger. But I don't think you should cross this game off your list yet!
It was weird when I first heard about it in FFXI, but in practice it really isn't that bad, I actually prefer it this way since it saves you a whopping 2-3 dollars a month assuming you stick with your 1 toon. In fact, adding only a 2nd character would bring the subscription cost up to what it pretty much is with any other mmo on the market.
Really saw no reason to make another since you can switch classes/nations if you want, just picked my favorite race and made sure he looked sexy :P
edit: It's also nice that players kind of build a reputation on themselves, and don't have an alt they can escape it from unless they pay >:D
This isn't new to a lot of people. It didn't bother me in FFXI nor did it keep me from purchaseing those alts and it doesn't bother me now. and what? If you don't like it don't play it. Don't let the door hit you on the way out!
My theme song.
Eh I don't mind microtransactions in MMOs. They got to feed their families and send the wee ones off to school too.
I think it's a clever way to hide the lack of character customization. You become your name, your name becomes your gear, your gear becomes your name. It's a pleasant little cycle.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
Have never rolled and alt (mules excluded), will never roll an alt.
There's too much invested on my part in terms of progression and immersion in my mains for me to shift my attention and devotion elsewhere.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I believe they did say that you will get 1 mule along with your main charicter, but again any additional is supposed to be $3.

How many characters can be created per account and will there be additional fees associated?
We are planning to implement a total of 8 slots. Each additional character will cost $3.00 per slot, for the 30 day period. The fee will be charged as soon as the 30 day free trial period ends and will recur every 30 days.
This, for sure.
OP is ignorant as this is no different than FFXI.
What's funny is, everyone here will pay it lol.... Just like WoW, you will complain about it and do nothing with your wallets to change it.
Nope, not at all .
If anything, this will make people more accountable for their actions. If someone wants to be a lootninja, troll, or internet thug then at least I know it's them. On games where there are no limit on alts, people can troll away and act like jackasses on one character, and then turn around and be really great on another

I never played XI, so it's a big thing for me to be able to progress in all classes on one character. Assuming I play XIV, this will be the first mainstream MMO I have played where I can progress mutliple classes on the same character...and tbh, not being able to do that in other MMO's is the only reason I got started on alts in the first place (the fact that I wanted to try other skills etc). And, the problem with alts is that my investment in the game is lessened. I don't want to play 10 characters to max, and end up getting bored.
Yes, it means I won't be able to try other races, but unless there are crazy racial disadvantages, caps or skill modifiers..that isn't a huge thing for me.
As far as the cost is concerned. I didn't realise that it was $3.00 a month, each month. I won't pay for that. If I get tired of playing my main I'll quit.
My understanding is that mule chars are a one time fee of 1.00 and then atls (fully playable characters) are an additional 3.00 per month. Most of the alts in FFXI were just mules. I honestly don't know a single person who ever actually played an alt to level or whatever. I'm sure there were people that did it but I didn't know any.
This has been discussed here serveral times by now. My short version reply is that in the FFXIV system (assuming its the same as FFXI since everything we know so far is setup the same) there is almost no reason to play alts. I know a lot of other games are using "roll an alt" as a major part of their "content" but frankly thats just a tactic they use to keep people busy.
You can do all the content, stories, classes, professions, quests etc etc on one character so most of the roll an alt content goes right out the window.
BTW there are other games out there who only give you one character period. This is not a new trend.
It doesn't matter for me at all i only need mules for storage room.
Once i pick a alter ego i stick with it till the end the only reasons for me to roll toons were to self pl me but to do that i had to have more than 1 account anyway so again the 3 bucks for a second character isn't of any importants for me.
I still do believe that 3 Bucks for each additional slot is overpriced but than again the ppls who r bitching about it would still bitch if it would be 50 cent per extra slot so who cares really
Most of the FFXI fans don't seem to care, the rest of us are questioning the move. No it's not just you, but the die-hard fans will try and label you for questioning the charge.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
I'm not a die hard FFXI fan. In fact I quit the game to back to Everquest. In Everquest I am still an altoholic. SE just does a good job satisfying me with a single character. It's not that I think we are defending SE, it's that we are trying to convey the kind of playstyle that the SE MMOs engender.
You misunderstood what I was saying. Most the FFXI don't seem to care. period. Die-hard fans will try and label you for something for daring to question the charge. I am actually separating people who don't care from the people who go nuts over anyone asking about the cost of character slots.

this^^. in ffxi you made a name for youself, and if you screwed up soo bad that you cant get groups.. then you need to make a new character, or find a way to redeem yourself. i dont want some player i cant stand, hoping on an alt to get away from persecution! im def for the extra charge for character slot. if it were up to me i would make it more than 3.00
Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya...
I think that the $3 fee a month is a good thing, that way some people will think twice before hogging all the good names on every server.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
Or trying to raise a ton of characters in tandem due to altoholism, only to burn themselves out quickly.
My feeling is that SE knows you people better than you do.

you get 3 character slots when you have 1 retainer. what the hell is so difficult to understand about that?
3 characters in 3 retainer. gosh kids play nice
Because you can play every class one toon, I have little issue with this.... but wish they had it to where it was one per toon server for up to 3 servers... just in case you have friends on different servers.
You seem to forget that with only 1 character and the one were you can sell items on the monthly fee is 3 $ less then AAA monthly fees.
So getting another slot makes it the same price of the modern p2p games.
