I once got a tell in-game from someone using a name like "BlizzrdAccountRep" which warned me my account was "suspicious" and I had to go to some site like "www.blizzard.logincheck.com" and enter my name and password to "verify" it. The scary/hilarious thing is that they wouldn't do this if there weren't people stupid enough to fall for it. A *lot* of people stupid enough to fall for it. This isn't ANYTHING Blizzard can correct. You can't cure stupidity.
I got this as well, it was a variation of us.battle.net (I won't type the incorrect one here since I'd be concerned that someone will click on it and go there), the domain name was only one character different than the real one and the toon that whispered me looked somewhat official. A few minutes later someone in my guild was talking about how they had to go visit the site, lol. I guess many people are just too trusting.
I can usually count on receiving at least one of those "official Blizz" account notifications daily. They're easy to spot, though because they come to an email address that I've never had associated with any Blizzard account. However, it is one I use for signing up on sites like this one. Having a separate email address solely for your Blizzard account is a good deterrent and is a good way to see where phishing emails are coming from.

Very true.
As the simplest rule for password security, never use the password unless absolutely necessary, and that is loggin onto the game via the game launcher. Never use your password elsewhere, never on forums, never on any websites.
i got hacked a few months back. I got an email from Blizzard about some suspicious activity and found out that someone from a Alabama( think it was Alabama) IP Address logged into my account. They suggested I change my password which I did. Funny thing was the next day the hacker logged back in by requesting a password change again and now I'm locked out of my own account. I finally said screw it, wrote a letter about this to Blizzard to get it fixed because I couldn't get through on the phone and it took them 3 days to reply to my email. I've never been hacked in anyother game nor was I hacked before they merged with Battlenet. If all a Hacker needs to do to get into my account is request a password change than that's nuts.
Ended up cancelling since I didn't play much anyways. I would never give them my new payment information, who knows what else Hacker can do with their software.
Your email was hacked. Nothing blizzard can do about that and they most certainly are not the ones who exposed it to hackers.
This is a great example of how hackers are attacking wow accounts and they don't even need to try to steal your wow login information. All they need to do is steal your email account and they have everything they need. Most people don't even understand what happened.
I went back to playing WOW after 4 years out of boredom. I wanted some mindless effortless fun. I had been playing for 2 months and found out yesterday my account is hacked and my level 70 toons from before are gone. The current level 20 toon i was playing is also gone.
I called support and the call volume was so high the couldnt take my call. I looked in the forums and see this is an epidemic.
Who needs this hassle I can play RPM or Allods and not deal with this BS.
So....how did you find out it was "hacked?" Did you just log in and notice it, OR.....did you get an email TELLING you that it was hacked and click on the link to go "check?" Just wondering.
People who get their accounts hacked have only themselves to blame. It is not the result of any fault on Blizzard's part. Almost every successful account hack is done by implanting a keylogger on someone's machine when they download an add-on for the game. It is the responsibility of the player to make sure that add-ons they run are legitimate and do not contain keyloggers... and there is nothing Blizzard can do to prevent you from doing something stupid.
Also... big tip: If you get an email that is supposedly from Blizzard telling you that they need your account information for some reason, do yourself a favor and don't be a moron. Blizzard will NEVER ask you for your account information for any reason.
I have not used my WOW account in over six months. I have not logged in, checked my status or anything in all this period. I have stopped paying a monthly fee and have moved on until Cataclysm comes. Yesterday, I get an email from Blizzard that a request was made for my password to be changed and then I get an email stating that there is suspicious activity with my account. My account is not active at all, so i don't even see how this is possible.
So I go to check my account and I can no longer log in due to someone setting a mobile authenticator to my account. So now I have to contact Account Support to try to figure out how to log in to my account, and waste all this time for an account I don't even use anymore.
There was no keylogging, virus, or any other attempt from my end as I am using a new computer and have not ever logged into my WOW account with my new laptop and I no longer use my old computer.
So to say that account hacked is soley the user's fault is ridiculous to me. The whole Real ID fiasco and BattleNet have made security a real issue with WOW. I play at least ten other games, plus manage my own web sites and no other account has been interrrupted or affect, plus I don't key into my accounts and instead use the Norton Cards for all my Internet use.
I don't believe I will be playing Cataclysm if this matter is not cleared up because that would mean having to but WOW and all the expansions again to create an account for a game I have moved on from.
For those who have not experienced this issue and want to just blame people for their stupidity is never a helpful way to understand a community that is suffering from its own stagnant growth and greed from the manufacturers.
If you want to know what will kill WOW, it will be the community and company and not the gameplay itself.
Just because you did not get hacked while you were actively playing does not mean they did not collect your information then and wait for you to go inactive when they could change up your account and have more time with it. It is not by chance that inactive accounts are the ones being attacked. Mostlikely you were using an infected Addon back when you were playing and they waited for you to be inactive before they took control of your account.
I managed to get hacked, which according to the rep I spoke to over the phone(45 minute+ wait mind you) asked me if I used an install, like curse client, and was like yeah, though i doubt it, but its possible. but anyways, I managed to retrieve my account and load my BN authenticator onto my iphone(free version), and when I logged into the game, I found out the hacker went to town on my toon lol. my priest is a herbalist, so he must of been farming like mad day in and day out. One of the main issues I was missing around 3,000 gold, but due to this farmer/hacker going nuts farming every herb around northrend lol, I managed to make around 8,000 gold off him lol.
I was able to purchase my epic mount training and now have my COS bronze drake, and get a 280% speed griffon mount with the armor lol. and still managed to have like another 2-3000g worth herbs, though i had to buy like 10+ 20 slot bags for both my DK and my priest and max out my bank space lol in order to empty my mailbox lol. but this is a happy ending to a horrible experience. I was able to turn the table on the hacker. He ended up doing a chargeback, my account was closed for a couple days, but I called them back, and they realized the hacker did this, and reactivated my account. take that u hackers! lol.

I've received plenty of these "messages" from "Blizzard". Well, NOT from Blizzard, actually. All of them FROM FRACKING HACKERS TRYING TO SEE IF I'M STUPID ENOUGH TO GO THEIR FRACKING FAKE WEBSITE AND TYPE IN MY PASSWORD LIKE A GODDAM FRACKING MORON. Now, I'm sure it's POSSIBLE the email you got was legitimate, though I've never heard of any such mails being sent legitimately, but the fact you were locked out of your account THE VERY NEXT DAY makes me just a TINY BIT SUSPICIOUS.
Nah, it's a all a big Blizzard conspiracy. It's NEVER the user's fault.
(I once got a tell in-game from someone using a name like "BlizzrdAccountRep" which warned me my account was "suspicious" and I had to go to some site like "www.blizzard.logincheck.com" and enter my name and password to "verify" it. I can tell just by the way you typed out that message that you are not the sharpest tool in the shed. Now, there are multiple ways somebody can hack your account without you being phished through email. Look how easy it was for those hackers to hack the pentagon database. You don't think the same people could easily hack into your email or gain access to your wow account? Hell, you put those wow head data collectors in your add ons, that is one way it is possible, and most people on wow use that wow head thing. Also Gearscore collects data, they too could be taking your info.
Sure, blame the victim when it is clearly blizzard problem. This happens more times with companies like NCsoft and blizzard than with other companies, and they allow the gold sellers to have free run of the game.

You guys are a funny bunch, you went home one day, the door perfectly locked but your TV set stolen. So you run to the sheriff throwing out crazy theory about demons rising from within the house and fly out of the chimney carrying it?
Come on, you do not know how the hacker get it. nor do we. Period. No one has to explain to you how you lost YOUR account. We don't know. We cannot come up with a reason, b/c we do not even know you. However, throwing a big conspiracy theory following your unfortunate unexplained event does not make it any more plausible,
You lost you account, checked, You do not know how it happened, checked. Blame no one, if you do not want to blame yourself. No one need to give you an answer, not even the police. No one owe you an explanation, no one can, unless they perform a thorough investigation, about your online bahaviour years ago while you play. Is there enough foundation for that investigation?

I work in the computer security industry and I play with malware every single day. I have seen every method used by these people to infiltrate accounts and it is ALWAYS due to something the end user does or does not do. Either you accidentally gave your password away when responding to a fraudulent email or your did at some point download and install an add-on containing a keylogger. Just because your AV program says there is nothing present, does not mean that is true. There are hundreds of thousands of new malware programs released on a constant basis and many have not been identified yet. Somehow someone got your password and I can guarantee you that it was not Blizzard who gave it away.
I have played WOW off and on since it launched and, through common sense and an intimate knowledge of computer security, I have never once been hacked. It really is the responsibility of the player to avoid getting hacked. Still, Blizzard will usually assist you with the issue even though it is your fault. Perhaps you should talk to them...

If they have an authenticator, it should be free to begin with, not some kind of extra security system that blizzard wants to capitalize on. It is just like windows with their security risks and viruses, they should have a free virus detector that comes with windows since this is clearly a windows problem. I got hacked about 2 hours after I switched over to the battle.net account. Blizzard messed up making your email your user id. I still get spam on my email. This is the only game I've ever been hacked in, that's 19 years of playing online games.....security much?
I haven't been back to WoW since. I figured my 8 level 80s and about 15 level 30-79s are all gone and striped.

Yea, like they couldn't have possibly gotten the password off of Blizzards data base /sarcasm.
The pentagon recently had somebody hack into their database and steal all of the armed forces Identities, so if one of those people get their bank account wiped out that means it is their fault?

It is also funny someone is narrow minded, so narrow minded. Something is black, must be black, if we cannot be sure it is white.
That we do not know how the hacking occur means we shove our what on what? You have issues or lacking the courage to admit that 99.99999% of the things happen around you without you knowing anything for certainty, that you only rely on some reports or news agency to relay you what they want to write?
They have an authenticator, then it must be free? Oh what logic? When you buy a house, the aircon must be free. Since the house comes with a garage, there must be a free oldsmobile inside? windows needs to provide free of charge whatever comes to your mind. Next time you run a business, I want everything from you, except your underwear. You must give it.
yeah thanks to WoW i had to cancel my credit card (they still were charging me for subscription, even though my account was banned for hacking activity), I changed my e-mail as well, thanks to Blizzard my old e-mail gets over 500 spam mails a day for something WoW. What's next, I'll have to change my name and SSN?

Blizzard sells their authenticator as an attempt to correct the stupidity of their users. The authenticator makes it so that even if you are a moron and have given away your password to a scammer or have inadvertently installed a keylogger, the bad guys still can't take control of your account. Before they had it, Blizzard spent an incredible amount of wasted time restoring people's accounts due to their own foolishness. Now they don't have to do it quite as much. That is the ONLY reason that the authenticator exists...
As for your comment about Windows - while it is true that there is far more malware for Windows than any other operating system, the reason for that is because more people worldwide use Windows than any other OS BY FAR. From a hacker's standpoint, it would be a waste of time to design malware for any other platform. They want to infect and steal from as many people as possible, so Windows is the logical choice. If Mac OS or Linux ever fully overtake Windows, I guarantee you there will be malware galore for them as well.
Fortunately you can get by just fine on ANY operating system if you demonstrate some degree of common sense and self-control. Run an antivirus and a firewall at all times. Always question the legitimacy of EVERY email you receive no matter how official it may look. Always question the source and legitimacy of ANY add-on you install. Never trust anyone else with your passwords and change them frequently. Also make sure that they are long and complicated. Stay away from fishy websites and use a browser other than Internet Explorer at all times!

I am saying, in simple terms, NO ONE KNOWS HOW THE HACKING OCCUR. Period. Not enough evidence to blame anyone. I am saying it is absurd to blame Blizz just b/c we cannot find who to blame. Where do I land the blame on users?

This is a great example of how hackers are attacking wow accounts and they don't even need to try to steal your wow login information. All they need to do is steal your email account and they have everything they need. Most people don't even understand what happened.
I just played through the 14 day trial and now I receive tons of phishing scams spam in the e-mail I registered with WoW.
I have no doubt it is an inside scam. So it is only natural you get no decent support for your problem.
We can only hope you get your problem solved. Best of luck to you.
You have no doubt meaning you cannot figure out something else, and that makes whatever only idea left in your mind the absolute truth.
To you yes that is the absolute truth, b/c you can work out nothing else.
That is the way of your logic, b/c you cannot think of anything else, nothing else exist.
Don't fall for phishing emails and you won't get hacked.
People still played that old piece of lowbie crap?
Its something millions find enjoyable. Period. Millions' view vs your view. Easy to know which seems more sensible.
He ended up doing a chargeback, my account was closed for a couple days, but I called them back, and they realized the hacker did this, and reactivated my account. take that u hackers! lol.

It's also a funny bunch of folks in here that have their heads shoved so far up blizzards butt that they think that it is not somehow their fault rather than the customers.
If they have an authenticator, it should be free to begin with, not some kind of extra security system that blizzard wants to capitalize on. It is just like windows with their security risks and viruses, they should have a free virus detector that comes with windows since this is clearly a windows problem. I know they have defender, and the firewall, but why is that not enough that most people have to go buy a seperate version just so they can use the overpriced windows OS to begin with? Windows needs to provide one free of charge for all of its customers.
To the poster above. Microsoft Security Essentials is quite free and easy to install.
Come on man, is my writing so hard to read? Do you care to read before throwing out a reply?
I am saying, in simple terms, NO ONE KNOWS HOW THE HACKING OCCUR. Period. Not enough evidence to blame anyone. I am saying it is absurd to blame Blizz just b/c we cannot find who to blame. Where do I land the blame on users?
