Best: DAoC pre-ToA. It was simply amazing, when people were locked into one realm on one server, and there was huge realm pride. The community was incredibly tight-knit. Those were amazing days and I've never come across that since, much to my regret. ATitD has a very good community as well, though it can be cliquish depending on what region and which tale you fall on. Strangely, my short time in AoC on a PvE server had me encounter a very nice community. I was simply shocked in a good way. I expected an absolutely horrible community and instead had some of the most helpful people I've ever encountered.
Mediocre: Most games fall into this category for me, but I'd like to mention two. EVE's community is hit-or-miss. I've met some very nice people in it and have made friends that I've known for years and years. On the other hand, I've come across a lot of patronizing, pretentious jerks and immature smacktalkers. WoW's is also hit-or-miss, but I have to say that the community was much better in the days before the dungeon finder tool. Vanilla was the best and I made some good friends that I still talk to even though I no longer play. Gearscore and the df tool have really ruined the community in my view.
Worst: LotRO had some of the most politically correct, you-must-think-as-I-think people I ever met. I really did not like the community in this game, I found them elitest, pretentious and patronizing. I had a very bad experience with LotRO, arguably the worst I've ever had in an MMO. GW had a terrible community as well, not just from the point of view of there being a lot of clueless players who could really ruin your gametime in groups, but also from those who thought they were better than everyone else. There were tons of scammers as well. I was glad when Nightfall came out and I could fill my party with heros, because I didn't enjoy dealing with my fellow players.
Worst: Darkfall, Lineage 2, AoC (PvP, Ru), most asian F2P grinders
Cant say bad about WoW. Warsong US server in early vanilla days was great, have alot of great memories. I also found alot of friends on russian Thermoplugg server. Of course there is alot of trashtalk in general chat and nobody willing to help, like in VG or Ryzom. But for WoW veteran it doesnt matter much.
Worse: The games I play now and probably the games I'll be playing next.
Game communities differ from server to server and experiences vary from group to group but the only common trend I can observe is a gradual deterioration of communities.
I found this comment interesting, because for me....it's just the opposite. The games I play NOW have the best communities. It's one of the reasons that I play them. The games with the worst communities....I eventually left, whether quickly or after a time of watching the community devolve. Just goes to show how we are all so different.

Couldn't have said it better myself its crazy how most people don't understand this. Also game size plays a huge roll.

You know why people don't "understand" it? Because it's backwards logic.
If the games you are playing now have the worst communities....why the FUCK would you play them? That's just ignorant. Conversely, if the games you USED to play had the best communities....why don't you still play them?
It's just illogical. Why stay in a game with a shitty community or leave one that has a wonderful community? What about that makes sense?
WoW doesn't have a community, so it doesn't count.
EQ2 overall has quite a positive community. SWG had an excellent community back in 'Pre-CU' because the game was basically a giant virtual chat room with player houses and cantinas.
I always felt the best and worst communities regarding MMOs are subject to change any day, throughout the day, and depends on what server.
With my experience the most consistently decent community was on Leafcull (or) Frostfell on Asheron's Call throughout 2000-2004. I never seen WOW comparisons, trash talk of other MMOs, "STFU NOOB" when people ask for help, nothing. People asked questions and got good answers. People seemed to enjoy helping the newer players, and there was more community action required with the lack of things like the auction house.
Ahh, when the genre was young. And I honestly love auction houses, but man, I enjoyed the economy on Asheron's Call and games without so much more.
Have to agree with most of the people here WoW has the worst community by far. I played for about 7 hours this week. In those 7 hours I had 1 person call me pussy cause I declined a duel and another person follow me around for 15 minutes, killing every mob I attacked. I actually logged out for about an hour and when I came back he somehow found me and the whole process started again. So, after 7 hours of playing I realized why I quit this games years ago. I have now cancelled my sub and this will be my last look at WoW ever again.

So the guy who was following you and killing mobs you tagged was actually helping you? Since you cant kill steal in WoW

Yes, the level 80 1 shoting every quest mob in the level 10 area around me was be really helpful to me.....hmm........ But even if they were the same level as me and it wasn't kill stealing it still rude as hell. If you want to group you need to ask not just run in and start killing someone's mob. I don't care how you want to word it, it's just plain asshatery. Which is what World of Warcraft is built around.
I guess I just don't get where your coming from. Back in Jan. you said WoW had one of the worst communities http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/3331248#3331248 . Now your saying you never had any issues with the game and can't complain. Your also trying to denfend the game or at the very least it's player base.

I don't know I'm confused.........
That really sucks! Sorry to hear that you had that experience. I must be one of the luckiest (ex) WoW players. I never had issues like these. I've had issues with groups from time to time, like the random ninja looter or healer/tank who leaves group right when you get in the dungeon door, but nothing on the order of harassment like this, and nothing I haven't encountered in any game to be honest.
Maybe I was just lucky on the EU server I rolled, the community was very nice and pretty helpful. There weren't even that many Chuck Norris jokes in Barrens chat!

Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.
Best: LOTRO
Worst: FFXI or Aion
Best: Vanguard, Ryzom, LoTRO (RP), SWG (RP)
Worst: Darkfall, Lineage 2, AoC (PvP, Ru), most asian F2P grinders

Best: The last time I answered this same thread I said LoTR. That was before they let it all the F2Pers. So I amend my answer to CoH.
Worst: WoW, by a landslide.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Best: SWG and LOTRO.
Worst: Darkfall.
Couldn't have said it better myself its crazy how most people don't understand this. Also game size plays a huge roll.
no game i've played had a good community.
Should probably stop playing games then.
Best would be Old EQ, EQ 2, Vanguard , LotRO , FFXI
Worse is WoW, Lineage 2 and a few other f2p games I tried out but cannot recall much.
Best: DDO, Lotro.
Sorry to be a cliche . . Worse: WoW

Lotro is the worst of all times
Best - Lineage 2.
Worst - Lineage 2.
A love hate relationship.
Best VG and EQ2.

Best answer thus far.

I have seen alot of games that have had some great communities. Most went down hill fast for one reason or another.
currently
best : fallen earth
the folks in this game are amazing. I can ask any game related question and it is taken seriously.
worst: WoW
I think many folks have covered this one well.
best = SWG community. I love those guys over there.
worst = Aion and wow..
