Very informative... they're putting a lot more work into this than I anticipated. This is shaping up to totally change the game; for better or worse. I like everything so far, especially their emphasis on profession masters - but I am a bit skeptical of the exploits and such this'll create... will take months upon months to tweak and adapt to this new system.

I'll always be skeptikal of upcomming large sweeping changes.

I read that, and I'm still not all psyched. It will be really nice to have balanced profs, though.

Bottom line is, every update they've made since I've come back has been OUTSTANDING, so I have faith. Only time will tell, though.

    Stuff sounds good!

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

    Excellent.....

This change is absolutely tremendous and is exactly what this game needs in order to get back on track. This will be what brings me and many other players back to the game. Most of the people who started playing at launch left because of the changes made along the way that ruined the original combat system (ie buffs, uber armor, template stacking etc..)

These changes should even the playing field again and make ranged weapons viable. The inability to shoot through solid objects and terrain should increase the chances for melee players to use strategical maneuvers against ranged players. This should revolutionize the game in my opinion.

To all the players who are already crying about this change because they have worked so hard to stack an uber template or whatever I say give it a chance. I think you will find the game to be much more engaging when these changes are implemented.

Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

  • HarelinHarelin Member UncommonPosts: 409

    A few points...

They're making health points relative to skill. If I'm understanding this right, this will totally do away with stacking and templates and return power to profession masters. They're also revamping skill point costs and pre-requisites which will also work towards this. They're even upgrading AI to create a 'hate' system... to 'improve gameplay and make agro control more interesting and engaging.' Line of sight will be turned on (no more shooting through hills, even), they've already improved movement to make it more 'responsive' for fast paced combat, buffs are being totally reworked, etc... also, this effectively makes the need for buffs in every fight nonexistent (while still giving a small bonus to those that have them, it's not an absolute necessity)

  • Mr_ManMr_Man Member Posts: 77

It's great that we'll finally get our Health points increasing by level.  That was one of my big complaints with the game.  I appreciated SOE's effort to do something different, but after a while you realize that you NEED more Health points to access more high level content, which leads to buffs which leads to soloing, etc.

Yeah, it's just like every other MMORPG, but the system exists for a reason.  Higher level players need more Health to take on higher level MOBs.

This already has me psyched for the Combat Upgrade.

Will the combat change in appearance or purely by statistics? Will there be new animations for TKA or Bounty hunters ect?

not sure but dont think so
why do you need new animations anyway? these old ones are fine already :P

  • ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,329

There will be many new animations, sound and light effects.

Why ? So you see what the other one is doing (especially in PvP) and can react to it. If you are good enough :-)

I hadn't heard that, Erillion... neat.

Any chance you could link us to more info?

Check this here often (Friday Features):

    http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/content.jsp?page=Friday%20Feature%20Index

For combat revamp I recommend to especially check the section about armor ( imperial biker armor, rebel assault armor /drool  ) and the new armor rules which are a link from the armor page

    http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/content.jsp?page=Combat%20Upgrade:%20Armor%20System%20Enhancements%20-%20Overview

    and the new weapons

    http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/content.jsp?page=Combat%20Upgrade:%20New%20Weapons

In this section we await a new document about the upcoming changes at any moment. Or when Beta starts - we think early April .. one month beta test.

Being a long-time Master Chef, I am extremely skeptical of this gigantic change. We were promised that the Chef revamp were made so our foods would fit into the coming CU. Now, that you can't enhance mind anymore, our biggest seller is rendered useless.

But I look forward and am sure that they will solve it.

My biggest concern is for the healing-professions which seem to take a big hit. Combat Medic and Doctors will get the crafting side move to BE (which is a bad thing), what will happen to states, etc?

Armorsmith also seem to get in the fire - as it seems now, they wont be able to change stats on the upcoming armors, therefore they will become nowadays Smugglers/Spice Dealers. :/ Not a good thing.

    -----------------------------
Looking forward to: WAR, Darkfall, Earthrise,
    Playing: Age of Conan
Have played: WoW, SWG, Runescape, EVE, LotR:O, ... and a lot of other MMO's.

    Out of curiosity...

What about the players who are happy with the old combat system and may find the new unappealing?  They have to STFU and adapt or they have an option for the old combat system?

    - "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren

  • ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,329

Either one or the other. No option to play the old system as the systems are incompatible.

As we DO know that the old combat system does not work well and is full of imbalances it WILL be the new system. For better (as I think) or worse.

So everyone has to adapt and if someone is too rigid to adapt and gets fed up with the changes ......

    /shrug

well .. this site features plenty of games ... I am sure they find something they will like.

I used to play SWG as a Droid Engineer.  It was fun for about 2 months until I found out that there was only the probot and dz70 combat droids.  I don't know what has changed since then, but the combat upgrade does seem to be a good start into making the game more strategic.  It also puts more emphasis on getting the higher ranking skills, which is good.  I just might have to buy JTL now and get back into this game after the update. image

Already made more then 10 friends, and joined a superb guild!

Combat Upgrade is on Tester Center now.  TC should be up in about an hour.

Shodunn ... it sounds like you played Droid Engineer before the DE revamp. That was active masochism back then. They did a complete overhaul of the DE profession. We did not get new droid skins and we did not get real high end combat droids, but DE is now a perfectly viable profession and you can make money - not as much as weaponsmith, but enough to make a decent living.

My combat droids are good enough (speed 0.75, damage 180, self healing) to let me solo the three larger themeparks with practically no personal fighting skills. And if something still gives me trouble I blow it up with bomb droids (with some added skills from other professions). So droids are useful to any player still in a basic combat career or all players having no fighting skills at all.

ATM astromech droids, flight computers and preprogrammed space skill chips are the things that sell well.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AND YES, CU is on TEST CENTER.

WELCOME TO A COMPLETELY NEW GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

World of Starwars : an Everquest Divided.

My first impressions from Test Center:

    a) VERY laggy. But you cant move away from the starter cities as you can fight like a 2 year old child. Not been killed by a gorg, but incapped a lot by Worrts  (aka starter mini creatures).

    b) Still needs a LOT of work. Especially color icons look amateurish, grainy, not enough colors. Combat sounds leave much to be desired.

    c) Welcome to the world of levels. Creatures have levels, players have levels, Groups have levels. YES, they are informative and are useful. No, I do not like to see them in SWG, which IMHO is NOT a level based system.

    d) Lots of text missing in mission descriptions and when you examine the gear you get from the blue frog (blue frog = terminal where you get gear, money, items, skills on test center). Pictures of new combat revamp weapons are missing when you look into your inventory, especially for melee weapons.

    e) Pathing error for NPC .. dozens piling up in he same spots.

    f) Rubberbanding .. i did confirm that it was not lag but only happened in a certain area (probably server boundary).

    g) When you reach a new box and dont train yet: when you get more XP in that area, you get strange text like " 10 XP gained in [no permission]"

    h) The questionaire you fill out at the end is an EXCELLENT idea as they focus their questions on the basics. Give them ratings 1-5 for statistical analysis but also fill out the comments sections.

So in summary ... expect a very rough and early version.

You have to and should send in /bug reports often. I did send in 10 in a one hour session. Go there ! Test ! Help make it better ! And it NEEDS help. A lot. But we CAN do it.

    Have fun

    Erillion

    PS :

The normal game still works fine. I am talking about the VERY early beta test phase of the Combat Revamp system here, which only runs on a special Test center Server.

meh, best April Fool's joke I have seen, like, forever:

The CU (also known as the SWG killer, or EQ2.5 - Star Wars Edition)image

Why do they ruin a perfectly good game, and one of the few originals out there? If I wanted to play EQII, I would go play EQII! If this dmn CU doesnt do a full 180 soon, im cancelling my 3 accounts... I guess SWG was fun while it lasted image

Have you played the CU on TC5?  I thought that ALOT of the things in the CU documents that Blair posted on the forums were bad.

However, after playing it I have to say that many of my worries were alleviated.

yeah off course I played it on TC5. Its just, SWG combat system was unique, fun and easy, now its like EQII, you NEED to group, and there is that damn level system I always hated about MMOGs... I think they thought they would be able to turn it more into EQII to get more costumers, only they will lose about 55% of current players if this system goes live the way it is now...

I know im quitting too, if they nerf our perfectly good combat system! Although the professions were unbalanced (and they can fix that part imo) they should leave the system as it was...

    just my 2 credits

    1.  People were separated into uber and noob before.

    2.  It's not a level system.  Characters/MOBs have ALWAYS had a "combat level" but it was just never displayed to the user.  Now it's simply visible...but it shouldn't be in my opinion.

I agree that they could have balanced it out as well.  It's the route I wish they were taking.

See my post above regarding levels.

Grouping is NOT required, this has been said many times.  People will not lose the ability to solo, they just won't be able to solo everything they can now.  Nor should they be able to.  A red con is a red con and should mop the floor with you in any game.

Let's be serious, 55% of the player base will not quit because of the combat upgrade.  I'm sure some people will leave because of it but i'm sure some people will return because of it as well.

Anyway, they still have time to get it to a good state.  It's been on TC5 for a just about 24 hours.  Let's all take a deep breath, grab a beer and see how it goes. image
