Why would anyone read another thread like this might be a better question.
If you listen to people on these forums there really isn't a single developer that has more than one game out that would be considered good by a simple majority and even most of the smaller single game companies would have a hard time getting a positive rating.
So, based on that everyone should stop playing MMOs and go do something else. But, the thing is that they are just games and even the bad ones give us something to do and talk about. The problem is that so many seem to take it personally as if the developers came to their homes knocked up their sister and then kicked the dog on the way out.
I'm looking forward to The Secret World as it sounds interesting but so has many other games that haven't for me at least been as much fun as I was hoping for. But, I have certainly enjoyed trying them out and seeing what was attempted. So, yes I will be another game from Funcom. And Blizzard and NCSoft and Turbine and pretty much every other developer out there as long as the game sounds like something that I would be interested in. Ninja Nuns riding bunnies bareback? I'm there. Murderous Mutant Monkeys? Yeah why not. My little crack pony? Emmm maybe not.

Yea but no MMO company I know well other than the makers of Vanguard (who are no longer with us by the way) have failed so bad.
I'll continue to watch TSW, no doubt, because Tornquist is a very creative and energising figure. Prophet Without Honour is NOT going to win many awards for his writing, but it was great getting to LIVE the thousands of years of history that make the AO world what it is. I've not played AoC because I dislike the setting and I'm much more into 'setting' and 'lore' over 'pvp' and all that stuff. And besides...Beats the hell out of WoW, that's for sure.
just because they usually have shitty launches for about everyone of their games, doesn't mean you should avoid their games. I really enjoy their games.

The game definatly had potential with some pretty cool classes to choose from but what did they do, as a barbarian i was doing the same moves at 60 as i was at 10, just different buttons i had to push.
Basically they released a game that was halfway done, had no thought or care for imputing any cool or unique armour, then about 6 months later they say they realized the armour was so bad and they would add more but by then, every1 had left.
Just be aware that when you stop buying games from producers that release games incomplete and buggy you may only end up with producers that can afford to release games all singing and all dancing.

One would have thought that the way some people talk, about Funcom for example, that they are just out to make a quick buck, but if that is the case then why do they stick around and fix the game. Actually Warhammer sold more units than Conan but dont fret cause that fanbase came to a screeching halt within a few months as well. They are now down to half the servers as well, Tabula Rasa was chopped down to make way for NCSofts next failure AIon whos servers ahve now also have been cut in half. MO garbage, sto garbage, who even openly admits to liking start trek these days only the retarded folks that go to their conventions.
Because despite the fact that AoC bored me silly within thirty minutes (I logged out after less than two hours and have yet to log back in), I have hope for Secret World because I loved Anarchy Online. It was the only MMORPG I played for many years, and for many years, despite annoyances like the insanely inflated prices (courtesy of farmers and the inevitable problems all aging games have with inflation), and despite some bugs that still existed up until the very day I quit (a couple of spots where you could still get stuck in terrain, for example), and despite Funcom giving players the ability to killsteal (which wasn't a big deal until the community became so horrid that killstealing became a popular and accepted activity), AO was one hell of a fun game.
As someone already mentioned, the pet classes were incredible. You didn't have to follow questlines all over the place until you felt like you should have punched a timecard before you started so you'd at least get paid for slavishly killing, fetching and carrying. While missions were available (both group and solo) you never had to do them (especially after Shadowlands was released). The ability to twink in AO madewhat people call twinking in all other games a sad little joke. The skill distribution system gave players a lot of flexibility. Funcom did many things right.
I do agree with Aquitha, though, at least for those who are intolerant of glitches, just give Funcom a year before you subscribe, and you should be good to go. But check back on the forums every month or two, just in case, finally, Funcom learns their lesson about buggy releases and gets it right this time.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
I would debate whether Funcom are trying to advance the 'genre' especially considering they have done nothing innovative in AOC for quite some time. I am not so sure TSW is going to be that innovative either, checking the screenshots from the main site it looks like they are just ripping ideas from games like Fallen Earth and Left 4 Dead.
In fact the Fallen Earth similarities I would say are quite disturbing, if I didn't know any different I would think it's Fallen Earth concept art. The salvage yard looks remarkably like 'the dump' conflict town. They have a wolf type creature that has a good resemblance to that of a Blight Wolf. Then the creature with the gogles looks the spit of one of Shiva's Favored who are a band of mutants. What do you have in Fallen Earth - guns, swords, pistols, mutant abilities - err what do you have in those screenshots.
Then I look at the game info and these are the high-points,
Urban Environments - wow, well any game based in the last 100 years or the future is going to have them.
Real World Locations - oh very nice, Fallen Earth is based on a topological map of the Grand Canyon so hardly a first even for an MMO.
Free Form Gameplay - no classes or levels. Well I would argue that to an extent exists in Fallen Earth. Though level structure still exists it's almost superfluous to requirements. Classes have predefined options for ease of use, Rifleman etc, but you can go your own way if you decide.
Hundreds of Powers - well you can have lots of mutations in Fallen Earth, set people on fire etc.
Action packed combat - hardly likely to say 'dull' combat are they, but then I haven't yet seen an FPS option for shooting in any TSW trailer. If they go third person they are in trouble.
Secret Societies - obviously trying to appeal to the Davinci crowd here. Probably just acts very similar to a class wouldn't you think.
Player-made Organisations - probably translates to mean a Clan/Guild.
Track your progress - be a pretty pointless MMO if it lost your progress or you couldn't tell how far you have got which means progression which must mean some type of levelling even if it's just in the background.
Intense Player vs Player combat - well based on their track record I can imagine this will be oh so balanced.
Next generation graphics - which will probably mean you need an Alienware rig to run the thing.
Perhaps there is more to it, I will wait and see but so far it doesn't look or sound that special to me. In fact I think I might already been playing the game already in Fallen Earth.
I am sorry, but i do not understand why you would buy another game from a company that keeps failing and can't even finish the games they have out?
AoC was the biggest let down.. i paid 100 for the collectors edition and the game still today doesn't work......
And somehow this game has a hype meter of 8 something i mean no wonder game company's keep making crap unfinished games ppl still buy them....
Please wake up ..
Thank you
stop blaming some one else for your crap hardware, works perfect on my machine and after coming back for the add on recently im really enjoying the game, im looking forward to secret world and might buy the CE like i did for Godslayer
Playing: FFXIV Future: wishing for SWG 2, World of Warcraft Classic Played: Most current and extinct MMO's - 18 Years in....
I don't get it.. Funcom isn't that bad.. AO was pretty awesome for it's time, AoC was alright if you were into that kind of thing.. If it's the same funcom, they made countless top end single player games, etc..
Plus it's different dev groups anyway, most likely..
The best attitude to take about any up and coming game is: wait and see.
Doesn't matter who makes it.. wait and see before forming an opinion or being prejudiced because of some mental instability.

Spend enough time around these boards and you'll learn that "quality" is not a big priority of mmo players. People honestly have no problem paying for games with major features that are unreliable for years on end, there are countless examples of this AOC being one of them and of course there are many other examples as well from companies other than FC.
While I have no interest in horror atleast as I see it from FC luckily I am a firm believer in the reputation this company has garnered for not being able to release a new prodcut without screwing up. You have Anarchy online with a terribible release they followed that up with AOC which had a terrible release and from what I hear the new expansion while many think was fun was also full of bugs many of which that have been ignored or atleast unfixed to this point.
While I would prefer personally that people avoid giving money to a company that is this inept at what they do as an entertainment product I don't see how I can tell people what they can or can't spend on so good luck to those still looking forward to this game I suspect you'll need it.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Wow, how in gods name can you say Fallen Earth, a postapocalyptic MMO a la Fallout, is similar to a horror/urban fantasy MMO like TSW that will be more along the lines of Lovecraft and Stephen King's works? The mind boggles.
Maybe you should just stay at Fallen Earth and stay away from Funcom games at all, before you know it you'll start yelling 'FE clone' as much as others yell 'WoW clone' about every new MMO post-WoW.
The game is at least a year, to 1.5 year away, so that's a lot of time that a lot of info still has to be revealed yet.
But so far, the things that are interesting about TSW:
- horror/urban fantasy theme: the first real MMO one, after all the fantasy and scifi MMO's. Set in modern times where science and magic will mix, in a world where 'all the legend and myths appear to have been true' with secrets and secret societies sure sounds intriguing. Inspired by Cthulhu mythos, Stephen King and Neil Gaiman, I expect the game to have a Supernatural/X-Files vibe. From zombies and a Innsmouth-like area, to a mysterious mummy infested Egypt. Certainly not a FE, lol.
- Ragnar Tornquist is game director: the man behind the great games The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, and he mentioned he'd been working on the idea and the world for 7 years, he certainly sounds very enthusiastic and devoted to the TSW project.
- no levels, no classes: now that's a change from the level grinding. We'll see how it works out
- team combos: where players' passive skills interact with their active skills, sure offers some intriguing gameplay when looking at the mentioned examples
- Cool factions: Illuminati, Templars, Dragons. It sure sounds a far cooler and more exciting setting, secret societies, compared to the factions in other MMO's.
- Faction PvP in the large Underworld: it sounds like the Abyss in Aion or the RvR in DAoC. We'll see how it turns out, but continuing faction warfare if done well sounds like a blast.
It's still a long way from launch for TSW, so we'll see how it turns out. But of all the upcoming MMO's, I like the theme and setting of TSW the most. Plus it looks to have more discerning features than a lot of the other upcoming MMO's.

Spend enough time in these forums and you might end up killing yourself. This place is infested w/ a bunch of unhappy people that are looking for the good ole days that they remember from their first MMO. Sorry folks, not gonna happen. Makes me wonder why I even bother coming to this place when all people do on these forums is bash other games/developers.
For every positive thread their are 10+ negative threads. Looks like its time for you guys to just find another hobby/passtime.
The problem with AOC was is was released premature no doubt about it.
lvls 1-20 were a great change of pace for most mmo's they had cutscenes, talking npcs, good class choices. but what happened after lvl 20? the game was just thrown together no more cutscenes, no more talking npcs, armour never changed and spells never improved.
I was very letdown with AOC and Funcom and would look elsewhere when playing an MMO

Oh I so trust TSW will be along the lines of HP Lovecraft/Stephen King writings. Especially as AOC is so much along the lines of what Robert E Howard wrote – not. They are even licensed to use his works yet deviate from what makes it good. Going for Age of Harry Potter rather than what it should be about.
Again as I said before not a lot sounds like innovation to me in TSW - you are dismissing it as not a clone of Fallen Earth (FE) only because it's not set in a post apocalyptic setting. But the majority of the features exist already in Fallen Earth - we have Zombies, we have underworld areas and bunkers, not sure about Egyptian Mummies but we have Mutant Apes. We have all sorts of mutant beings with all sorts of weird powers (mutations which could be considered magic) alongside established weaponry. We can also craft something like 95% of the stuff you find in-game (no crafting mentioned in TSW from what I have seen). We have 'cool' factions - Enforcers, Light Bearers, CHOTA, Travellers, Vistas and Techs - we even have a faction wheel for balance between different factions allies etc. Though by the sounds of it you consider the definition of 'cool' to be anything that might of appeared in a Dan Brown novel.
As for Ragnar Tornquist - what are his MMO credentials again? Anarchy Online - how many millions of units did that sell then - or is that another Funcom game that has gone f2p. Nor does being passionate about a game mean it will be any good. You could say Gaute was passionate about AOC but he didn't deliver, he was that passionate he left the company because he wasn't happy with the direction the game was taking.
Funcom can pretty much promise the earth at the moment, but the information is scant to say the least. Can they really afford not to release this game for another year and a half? A company that is continually making a loss year in and year out (in an industry that is thriving). This company excel at being vague and how better to be vague than a game about secret societies, the epitome of vague - so it should suit them. But at the moment take everything with a pinch of salt until you see it - at the moment it does sound like a Fallen Earth clone.
I love the concept of this game and the idea of a 3-faction PvP system(like DAoC) excites me. I've played Fallen Earth(and liked it) and don't see this as a FE clone at all based on what has been revealed. FE is a more sandbox style MMO grounded in science fiction, whereas this one seems more mystical and grounded in horror.
Of course time will tell what actually makes it into the game. The big elephant in the room is the developer and we are all too familiar with how their vision outreaches their abilities, given their past two MMO releases.
Cautious optimism would be the wisest way to approach this game. Better still, put it to the back of your mind until it launches and see what state it is in then.

Yes, but that's because you're more objective and don't have a built-in grudge on autopilot towards Funcom that colors everything you say and think about FC or TSW into the extreme negative.
In short, your viewpoint shows more sense and reason than the full bias that the posts of haters can easily be recognized by.

Hehe sorry but this made me chuckle, there are of course skills. How else would we kill anything? Anyway I'm also looking forward to this game without prejudice, mainly because of a unique setting and 3 FACTIONS (!!!!). And all the other stuff you highlighted.
Currently playing: No MMOs Played properly: WoW Tried: AoC, WAR, Aion, Darkfall Looking forward to: FFXIV, Earthrise, The Secret World, Guild Wars 2 (very much), Project Copernicus (and Mercury for that matter), Everquest and Planetside Next (finally a meaningful mmofps again) Wants to play in 2 years time if it survives from the subscriptions of fanatics and turns into the game with all features stated on the website: Mortal Online

Maybe because Age of Conan is the first MMO where I like playing almost all the classes. Maybe because Age of Conan is a great game. They had a bad release and that will haunt them for the rest of their existence, but that doesn't mean that Age of Conan is not a fantastic game now. Of course all of this is simply my opinion.

In fact I think I might already been playing the game already in Fallen Earth.
stop blaming some one else for your crap hardware, works perfect on my machine and after coming back for the add on recently im really enjoying the game, im looking forward to secret world and might buy the CE like i did for Godslayer
Playing: FFXIV
Future: wishing for SWG 2, World of Warcraft Classic
Played: Most current and extinct MMO's - 18 Years in....
Interesting Fact - I own 27 Tarantula's
I like both Anarchy Online and AOC. Good games. You are a bittter person.
Just a slight note here: Alienware is no longer the big dawg.. they are essentially a Dell, with surplus charges for their handling and stuff.
You will get a cheaper, better system if you put it together yourself, that's for sure. Much much cheaper.

Currently playing: No MMOs
Played properly: WoW
Tried: AoC, WAR, Aion, Darkfall
Looking forward to: FFXIV, Earthrise, The Secret World, Guild Wars 2 (very much), Project Copernicus (and Mercury for that matter), Everquest and Planetside Next (finally a meaningful mmofps again)
Wants to play in 2 years time if it survives from the subscriptions of fanatics and turns into the game with all features stated on the website: Mortal Online
Yeah, I'd alrdy corrected it in the original post when I saw it, but in Fallenlords' quote it's still the uncorrected version
