That's why they have named the game Rift: Planes of Telara. You will never see the name written in demos, products etc with a TM for only "Rift".

Also, Star Wars is a quite specific trade mark, but I bet quite alot that noone could for example trade mark "Star" or "Stars", unless with an additional specification, or submarket.

Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see then, what the law sais I suppose.

edit: theres some combat in this video

Manual aim is good to a point.  What I've liked most is the system Age of Conan has.  Tab targetting combined with aimed melee.  This allows multi-classing, it gives a the ability to use melee and support spells at the same time.  I don't like the combination stuff that AoC has, but the rest of the system is very good.  I think they got it right and it should be what new games should start doing to evolve combat as we know it.

When everything including melee is tab targetting, it's easy to program.. but unrealistic because you can't attack multiple targets in melee. It becomes boring, WoW has this now.   When everything is aimed fire, you run into some serious balancing issues.  It makes ranged combat much harder due to the fact that you have to aim at greater distances.  So what do you do to fix that?  Make spells stronger?  Make them have more AoE?  Then you hurt melee.  See what I'm getting at?  It's an endless struggle and I think we've seen games like DF and MO have those problems recently.

UE3 is a great engine, as is the Cryoengine.  The problem is that they are completely targetless.  Ranged combat is always a problem and both of these engines are designed for shooters, not MMO's.  MMO's need to mix these two together and polish it.  Melee and ranged will be balanced, it will be easier to program, and it will require players to be a little more active while they fight.  Best of both worlds.

Why a developer won't take the best of 'sandbox' and 'theme park' to make a sandpark game is beyond my comprehension, but I suppose that's another topic entirely isn't it.  I'll be following this game, but from what I've seen it will be pretty much similar to what we already have out there.  Maybe I'll be wrong.

    Lmao: "Sandpark".

Good points though. In the future, the business will probably evolve so that all games use non-targeted/aoe spells to some degree.

Everything I've discovered about this game has pleased me a great deal. I can't wait until this game is released.

I have to agree they have an all star team one noteable exception.  Their senior community manager.  The woman is a walking ticking time bomb.  Tieing forum rep to chances to enter beta, flame baiting, banning out of emotional reaction rather than facts.  This is what happens when you give a party planner control of your community.

Several of my guild and friends have turned away from the game after this weeks antics.  I'm still on the fence and hoping some one in management wakes up soon.

I'm not active on their forums. I'm not active on SWTOR either, even though I'm very excited about the game. I long ago learned to stay off the official forums of games in development. Most often the wrong impressions can be gotten by reading them or I get overly excited about it, and then massively disappointed during beta.

Problem with this is that PB's Rifts also does the same sort of thing with subtitles on everything they release as well, which only furthur adds to the potential for confusion. For example there video game was Rifts: Promise of Power. Just about every book they have written also has subtitles such as: Rift's: Vampire Kingdoms, Rifts: Atlantis, etc. as well as the registred trademark PB has on Rifts in and of itself as well. And yes, they do currently claim that as their's and have been doing so for around 30 yrs now. You can use the term rift(s) to describe anything you want, but the first person to use it in commerce is generally understood to hold ownership of any profits generated from that. Had a similar issue with some clubs where i live. 2 of them were fighting over the same name, and it basically came down to who had commercially used the name in a business transaction first. Obviously there could be some factors im unaware of with this partcular case, but if the cases ive seen prior show any precedent, then this wont look good for trion. And that case with the clubs also took place in california.

click the links on Living Dice website Trion list out a bunch of factors as to why the trademarks held by PB were obtained by fraud.

Its a bunch of Legal BS that should be taken care of in a back parking lot rather than waste eveyone elses time with it.
