Expectations and hype for this game are high, but most of it is just extremely unrealistic...
Here is what the masses want, but can't get:
* X-wing vs Tie Fighter + Rogue squadron sequels combined into space combat.
They don't care that this is an MMO and not a flight sim. They don't care that story is the focus. They don't care that this is essentially KOTOR III and I and II had no space combat. They just want.
* Hyper-photorealistic graphics.
They don't care whose computer freezes up or how elite the gaming machines must be to run this game. In fact, they want everybody's computer to crash the minute they walk into town. They don't care if the average user is forced to spend a few hundred dollars in upgrades, and thus decides to buy a PS3 instead. They just want.
* Every race from EU represented
They don't care that each race will require varients on voices and animations which will take a lot of time to program. They don't care that the EU is still being written. They don't care if the game comes out in 2011 or 2014, or 2020. They just want.
* Lag free gaming on Day 1
They don't care that every MMO crashes and has stability issues at launch. They don't care that this is Bioware's first MMO. They don't expect the game to be unstable for 1-2 weeks like you and I... they just want.
*Amazing PVP
They don't care that Bioware has never done a PVP game or attempted to play test PVP. They don't care that Bioware is developing 16+ story lines for the game. They don't care that this is a follow up to KOTOR II which had no PVP at all. They just want.
* Revolutionary combat
Well, I would have liked this too, but anybody who is complaining about combat at this point is mad. The game is Trinity and reworking the combat would extend development a year or two just in itself, but we just want it.
All of that said... on launch day I can't wait till all these overhypers see their sky come crashing down.
Those who expect this launch to be any better than WOWs, or who fail to remember how horrible it was, are sadly mistaken... and I await their QQ posts come launch. The forums will be overloaded with day 1 quitters, and I will be the one handing them the sporks to gouge their eyes out with, and laughing... OVERhype FTL!

Do we have flying cars in the future?
Schadenfreude? Or a much needed "shock" to the system, you decide.
I think the positives will largely outweigh the negatives, is my estimation. I think a lot of people have a lot to look forward to, here and the MMO genre is the place for it.

TLDR version of the OP.
What it won't be is SWG2. And it won't be a space combat game.
Better to focus on what its likely to be, an MMO version of KOTOR.
It won't launch better than WOW, but will likely employ many of the same game design/mechanics as WOW.
People won't like it come launch day and will qq.

Yes... Exciting stuff. 120 + mil dollars in development cash and all they can come up with as "innovation" are "voiceover" and "RPG like quest system". Great...
I try to restrain my judgment till the release but as i stated before no other company managed to kill my hype as efficiently as Bioware with SWTOR.
I've been uplinked and downloaded, I've been inputted and outsourced. I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading.

Couldn't agree more, there has been no information released about this game so far that makes me say "I need to play this MMO".
I'll keep my eyes on it of course, but so far, nothing grabs me, even slightly.
The Game will be fine, what a few naysayers spout here doesn't really impact the game whatsoever.
First of all it is boring crap becouse the person who started this threath doesnt even know singel thing about SW TOR.
He could at least watch the E3 video first as for the beginning before writing some crap sry but its true .
Besides all of that dont write about it like if u would play it already 1 year now , when it comes out than we will know if we got lied to or not .

I'm slowly suspecting that a lot of anti-SWTOR posters have other motives than just the arguments they posted: some hate EA and as a consequence every game that EA will launch, others are afraid that SW:TOR will cause people to leave or draw attention away from the MMO they themselves favor, current or upcoming one.
Anyway, I agree that SW:TOR hasn't the 'shock and awe' power that a number of the revelations regarding GW2 had.
In contrast to the trolls, haters, and anti-SWTOR and anti-Bioware/EA people I did see a number of things that interested me, enough to change my initial 'meh' after seeing the graphics into a 'hmm, let's wait and see': the indicated massiveness of SW:TOR's that could very well dwarf most of the other MMO's around in worldsize and content, the enhanced questing and immersive storytelling, the seamlessness of its worlds inclucing the instance flashpoints.
So I'll just wait and see what more they'll come up with, if anyone can make a great Star Wars MMO that manages to draw you into its universe and story, then it's Bioware, they have the benefit of the doubt to me.
But hey, I liked most of the other games they've released throughout the years.

Good points. With the hype this game is creating/causing it is almost doomed to crash and burn. Not because it won't be a good game, but because many people will create an idea of the game which is different from what will be delivered.
Isnt that what happens will almost every game? Unrealistic expectations are common especially with such a huge title. Many people will like it and a equal amount will complain about how it sucks. I'll just wait, try it myself and make a decision after that.
It's what happened with every other AAA release after WoW. I think this game will sell hugely well, maybe as much as 2-3 million in the first few weeks. What will surprise me is a retention rate after 6 months of more than 30%.
That said, I'll definately try it. My only expectation is to have fun.
Wanna hear something funny?
Before WoW was released, I said the exact same thing about it because of what happened to SWG's release. Both games had hype bigger than SW:TOR could dream of.

Is their anyway we can somehow get Moderators to ban the fanboys? The "Read First: Notice of Increased Moderation" has good intent, but the Fanboys are the ones that root cause of the hostility. Many of us who want to come and have good conversations with actual discussion's, are drowned out by people saying things like...
Too the Original Poster, I think you hit it right on the head. People are upset because its popular. When I was a Teen, I was a Fanboy... I needed to diminish the pop-culture music to make Me feel "Special"... Well a few decades have past and of course now I see life in a better light. I make choices on what I like based on what I find to be enjoyable. I want to have real conversations with people who have made intelligent full responses, either negative or positive, and who can see gaming for what it is!
I love games, I want to find enjoyment and excitement from them. I like to see success not failure! I don't go to a movie thinking "This will suck because its popular" instead I go to a movie hoping I haven't wasted My $8!
Everyone has different tastes. I don't like COD:MW2 because of its Rambo type action and lack of team play. Instead I enjoy BF:BC2! The latter takes longer to learn, requires good team mates, and abit of work... but when you get it down, WOW what a RUSH!
MMO's are the same way. EVE is a great game, that I am sure I would love if it wasn't for a few things. I don't bash EVE, I wish there where more MMO's with the high learning curve and extreme amount of detail and customizations available.
I am hopeful that the new Engine for Anarchy Online will do what EVE's engine update did. Anarchy Online is a complex game, with a high learning curve that requires patience during the learning curve to fully enjoy!
With that said, My Wife and I will still be one of the ones that mass login at SW:TOR launch and probably one of the ones that causes so much traffic that the servers will inevitably shut down! LOL...
I will probably still be on AO, slowly leveling My character, and enjoying the harder gaming environment. I know that recommending AO to My Wife would be a bad Idea. She is new too MMO's and like EVE, they are not for everyone!
I like the diversity offered in MMO's, I get frustrated that everyone is making MMO's, and thus diluting the market place. I feel this causes few companies to take the $125+ million dollar plunge that EA is. Almost all new MMO's are released as bare bone games. Company's wait to see if their game generates revenue before they invest in end game content and additional complexities that make an older game more enjoyable.
Talking about MMO's is usually a very unpleasant activity. I end up getting discouraged and eventually quit the game! Even reading the forum's that are on the MMO's website is filled with enough negativity that I usually come out thinking "Why am I doing this?"
I would welcome a constructive intelligent conversation about the art of making a game, the balance of features and gameplay. Unfortunately I find the message drowned out until it becomes absurd.
Have your read these forums much?If you have you'd realize that reality doesn't paly a big part in most discussions here hehe.
OP: When you take on one of the biggest, beloved IPs in the world, there will be alot of expectations. Star Wars also has a very long history of video games, and quite a few of them were outstanding space combat games.
I'll leave it at that, since my TOR ranting can be more frequently found elsewhere on the forum with better details
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
This thread is an example of why I never expect anything for an upcoming game, MMO or not. The only thing I expect is that it will be an MMO, and it is based on Star Wars. Everything else is not for me to speculate. That will all be revealed leading up to, and at launch, can't you people just wait?

Honestly, I never anticipated TOR to be anything more than Kotor 3 with some slightly improved-upon WoW mechanics for the mmo portion. It is supposed to be a sequel in the Kotor series after all.
Kotor 1 &2 had about 5 mins worth of "space combat" which was just the player in a turret shooting really slow moving targets, so I wasn't expecting rogue squadron there.
They've made some nice innovations that the industry seems to be moving toward, such as more voiceacting, fluid/reactive combat animations, etc. There's also their loading-screen-free instancing technology which I hope more mmos will use.
If you overhype the game and expect things that you aren't lead to believe will be there, then you have no one to blame but yourself.
No point in speculation. Just sit back, enjoy the ride, and crash the servers on launch day. I am looking forward to this game and will give it a week or two before I jump in. I'll hope its like Episode 4 and not Episode 1 (proving that even LA can make sh!t).
Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.
Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
Lol your blaming the fanboys? Look at the OP's last paragraph dood.
I agree with this post. Also, at PAX the BioWare guy said "SWTOR is not KOTOR 3, it's KOTOR 3,4,5,6,7,8..."
So basically if you were hoping for another single player KOTOR sometime in the future, yeah, no. :P
