So in a nutshell the servers went down, no one from their side was around to see it(ITS THE WEEKEND PARTY PARTY!!) until they came in Monday. Should you really expect anything less from a company that took 8 years to launch an MMO...of this quality.
It would only be fair for me to factor into point that no other MMO is really even close to what Darkfall is like from a game feature perspective. It would be easy for me to spiral the conversation down to that level however that said, it does play a factor and here is a classic example why.
I took a break from Darkfall and I played Fallen Earth, it has a great crafting engine but its so quest dependent that it can get annoying running around touching that, talking to this person. I would almost rather have a quest that says 'kill 1000 beasts' and just not worry about finding boxes and the like. never the less I quit and came back mostly becuase of the quest insanity.
Unfortuntaly for making a fair debate almost all other MMO's are quest dependent leaving only a very small amount to compare to in that vein.
Anyway, its also true that its actually a conversation for a different thread and I most likely have diverted enough away from the orginal post. I think the reason its of intrest to me is becuase I very honestly would like to have options and I am currently looking around for a second MMO.
Like I said, UO has just about every 'feature' I can think of from Darkfall and was very likely some inspiration for the overall design. It's true that there aren't many MMOs like it, but there definitely are some. Your first statement just isn't true. I just think you haven't found them yet.
Otherwise, I agree with your interests steering away from quests, because I often prefer that too. There are actually a lot of games that focus on the simple grind of killing mobs or raising skills rather than be an npc errand boy, as I like to call it. UO, L2, AC, and a small handful or F2P games are grind-oriented like Darkfall, where even the quests are more about the grind than questing itself. It'll just take time to try a few out and find one you like.
I think it's a good idea to always have a backup when you want to play something when one of your favorites is unavailable. My backup is usually Guild Wars, while Lotro/UO are currently my mains depending on if I feel like questing or grinding skill gains. Sometimes I swap those out with EQ2/L2. There's definitely no shortage of MMOs out there (guessing probably about 300+ total right now), but I think the best ones are still the most widely recognized after trying so many of them. I haven't found any 'hidden gems' so to speak, but I think the Perfect World Entertainment, Alaplaya, and Gamigo networks of F2Ps are pretty decent compared to the rest. Outside of those networks, a lot of them feel like early beta tests (and some of them legitimately are, to be fair).
all I did was scan your text for the name of another game and didnt see anything.
These types of debates always happen here and its usually take a great deal of effort to pull the name of ANY game out of people who make these points as you have other than 'well any game' or all other such predictably cute comments such as that.
Alright, well, if you have scanned the text of what I wrote, then you would in fact see the name of two games, but that is neither here nor there, and neither were MMOs. BUT, the post you just responded to was the first post I have made in this thread. I am not the original person you were responding to in the post I quoted, and I am not debating the merits of DF versus other games.
I am simply talking about facts versus opinions. Hence the need to pull the name of a game out of me is pointless in this case. I don't truly care if you like DF, or if you think it is the best game out there. I find the statement that DF blows other games away in game versus game debates to be a bold statement, since it is truly a matter of opinion.
I mean seriously, I never made statements even close to "well any game", and I am not trying to put other games out there as being better than DF. My point was quite simply, there is truly no game better than another, because it is all opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Reading my statement applies equally to anyone that states another game is truly better than DF and blows it out of the water. Your statement just got picked for my little soap box tirade because it caught my eye.
How is that for predictably cute? I mean, it seems you didn't even bother to read what I wrote, and clumped me in with other posters, because if you had read what I wrote, then I would truly have expected a different response than what was given.
But hey, since we are here, I'll give you my opinion. I finally played DF. I found it boring and I found it lacking. It didn't appeal to me at all. But hey, that is just an opinion, just my opinion, and I am not throwing it out there and saying "DF sux" or some such comments. If DF is your cup of tea, fine, rock on with it and play it. It doesn't affect me or my life.
What MMO does have my attention right now? None of them. There is not a single MMO on the market that has caught me and taken me for that magic ride since old school UO, old school EQ, and probably SB. I'll keep trying, testing, and playing until I find one worth my dollar, hence me still visiting this site, and sites like it to see what is out there.
Sorry for derailing the thread, but I guess it's already too late for that lol for the record, I still am all for them improving communication!
Like Wyldsong pointed out, it's hard to get that classic old school UO/EQ feel in an MMO nowadays, but the thing is those MMOs are still active for good reason. The developers on those are still releasing new content, patches, and player events. I know old-school UO/EQ is not the same as what both games have become, but the newer versions of those are still the closest you are likely to get to what they once were. There is also a very good chance that classic servers for UO will open up soon due to a large following behind the idea and an advertised "major announcement for the future of UO" in the next community event. It could just be a sequel or graphics upgrade, but more people are betting on classic servers which is expected to bring a lot of veterans back to the game.
Best way I can explain UO vs DF is just the difference in perspective. UO is like DF from a Diablo 2 top-down perspective. Darkfall is like UO from a Dark Messiah of Might & Magic perspective. If Bioware Mythic releases classic servers supporting the way it originally was meant to be played, then the PVP ruleset and world will be the same as Darkfall also. If anyone questions why Darkfall doesn't separate PVE from PVP, then any UO veteran could tell you why because that's exactly what EA did with it, and a lot of people left because of it. There's a type of gameplay and strong community feel to the original ruleset that can't arise from it any other way, of PVE peacekeepers versus PVP rogues or PVP police versus PVE thieves and city raiders. Basically, the people that like the game best for it's PVE content still have to watch their backs.
Everything else I can think of is the same. They both have full loot PVP, city sieges, skill systems based on activity instead of 'levels', similar minimal interface, getting transported back to town on death with nothing unless you make it back to your corpse, diverse world to explore, open world housing instead of instanced, boating, important crafting/collecting of backup weapons/armor because items wear out or break, identical ruleset if classic servers are added to UO, seamless world, a strong roleplaying faction of the game, realistic harvesting necessary for crafting, reagents used for magic, and probably several more areas I'm not remembering. UO is also more developed in some areas, like dungeon crawling, linked/related skills to create a combination of important ones based on your focus, you can't be 'everything all at once' because of an overall skill point cap, 11+ games to it's name of lore and history behind the world, and a ton of housing options for customization to name a few.
Seriously, DF could have been called UO2 for all intents and purposes. If you want another game to compare to DF, and you're capable of putting aside dated graphics, UO is at the top of the list especially if you don't care about good CS. That is one of the few legit complaints against EA taking over for Origin Systems back in the day, and still remains to be seen if they can correct mistakes they make with promotional events in a timely manner.
All you people jumping around with the pom-poms in the air like the cheerleading captain for a losing team need a reality break!
Customer service will make or break a company, PERIOD! A company can have a quality product but without appropriate support of that product the company has nothing. We as customers pay a monthly subscription to play a game. Maybe not all of us need nor want to know everything that’s going on; but when a problem affects the masses then the masses have a right to know what the problem is or when the problem will be resolved. That is something that we are entitled to as paying subscribers. I don’t think anyone is looking for a in-depth explanation of the issue, I think most want to know that the company (not a forum moderator) is aware of the issue and it’s being worked on and that there should be a resolution in X hours, days, weeks…

Darkfall or UO are the best choices?
well I best be nice and leave it alone so that we get back on topic which was mostly my fault anyway
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Apparently you didn't read much of my post. If you're not going to read most of what I typed, then yeah. Best change the subject cuz I'm not going to waste my time.
Lol Sean Arcken has been that way since vaportrolling times. Don't feed him, he is here just for some 'forum pvp'.
well if it isnt my ole froth&foamer. havent seen you much lately hoss, how're those 1 million + subs you so vehemently preached before lauch doing?
You even can't remember fact's right. I was the one asking for a dedicated and small playerbase and getting rid of all the "critics'.
I am happy ...
And yes, its not good they were silent the whole sunday. But for them making thebest game on the market the playerbase forgive em their odditys and take em verey lightly.
Heh... just like pre-Beta days, and the early days of launch.
Going to have to agree with Darth on this one though Arcken.
Darth has been very consistent in his postings. I don't recall him predicting huge numbers, and (if I remember correctly) has always been vocal about having a loyal smaller base instead of caving into "carebear" ideas to attract more players.
Some possible names that might have predicted large sub numbers would be:
javac
Aragon100
SignusM
downtoearth
originalegg
imbant
mcpoopypantz
singsofdeath
daarco
Seggallion
I've probably forgotten some popular posters from the early days... but those are the ones that were pretty active back then. Anyway, thanks for the memories.
I think it is a bit mind-boggling that customers feeel it is 'ok' to be left in the dark about a timed purchased (subscription) for a whole day. The fact that it does happen in several games proves that starry-eyes customers breed uncaring companies.
Servers melt, databases get corrupted, datacenters are attacked by aliens. All that happens and it is OK. But minimal communication is a sign that the company cares, and it serves to strenghten the bonds between 'company X customer'. In this aspect, I agree that this is a serious oversight by AV.
About the whole 'best game' thing... I won't touch that one with a collapsable aluminium ladder.
I prefer to play a good game..thats why i dont play DF.
what game is that?
I'm curious as well.
WoW, Eve, GW and so many more great games. What a silly question.
played them. I enjoy DFO MUCH better.
Can't beleive anyone would post that WoW is interesting to anyone but a retarded 3 yr old.
Who made you the king of the earth? Who says your opinion about WoW/DF/GW final?
Can't believe anyone would post that DF is interesting to anyone but a retarded 2yr old. There, I beat u by 1 year.
yeah well saying WoW is better than Darkfall pretty much speaks for itself. I find it funny
Funny as it is, I wonder why someone who still likes WOW is even interested in a game like Darkfall.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
EU server has been down all day now. Tacos (Tascos) has just made a great post that was full of good news about the future then they go an f up the communication again by not bothering to post why the servers never came back up after maintenance.
Not good.
well as we stated before, knowing why the server is down will not allow you to play the game anyway and you will simply need to make a choice in life, do you want to play a good game or have good customer service with personal wtf is going on hotline?
Why does it exclude each other? Also many players would say that good customer service is part of a good game.

I think its already been made clear that we (darkfall fans) are not going to play a game that is not as good as darkfall just becuase the customer service is better.
Its a no win arguement you really should give it up and call some 1-800 for some good old fun customer service
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Also many players would say that good customer service is part of a good game.
they are wrong and to be frank I dont believe they even believe it. They just use that excuse because it buys them a little more time in a losing arguement.
I know for a fact that many people LOVE customer service and I know that many people make purchases based on the customer service. I think those people are silly most of the time.

I'm curious as well.
on an game vs game debate Darkfall usually blows other games away. Its a debate that rarely happens or quickly gets diverted back to customer service as a game feature.
A lot of debates on Darkfall vs 'what I want' but not so much Darkfall vs Another Actual game.
EDIT: or walk into the valley of steel comments like 'Any thing other than Darkfall.'
This is your argument that DFO is better than every other MMO out there?
Don't you think there's something missing from your post, perhaps IMHO?
Power to you that you have found that special MMO that ticks the boxes, but don't be so condescending and think it's the best MMO out there for every other player, it cetainly isn't.
I personally found DFO rather dull, if the game can't grab my attention on the first day it's not something I want to keep coming back to, give me something thats going to leap out at me with excitment and adventure from the moment I log in, not find myself in a deserted fort, deserted landscape and have to hunt endless goblins for some blasted axes to progress, thats beyond tedium, thats something from 1999.

yeah you do have a point. I was thinking about maybe moving over to Diner Dash becuase I do understand it has great customer service! so that is a huge win there!

Adventures are something that don't comes to you but its YOU that has to hunt them and go after it, its like in RL. If you were a adventure type you would leave the desert and out of curiousity you would explore the landscape to find something different. from what you posted you don't seem me adventurer type of person. Adventures have to been brought to you..you don't seem me someone who would survive adventures and Darkfall has owned you already seems..

Agreed. If your looking for a game to hold your hand every step of the way, DF isnt for you. It forces you to use your imagination basically, i find it very freshing from the more recent MMOs on the shelves.

very true. Very few games make it possible for the players themselves to create in effect what is game lore.
Ginger Magician is now pretty much a game feature as well as a real player (as an example)

WoW, Eve, GW and so many more great games. What a silly question.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

yeah well saying WoW is better than Darkfall pretty much speaks for itself.

Why does it exclude each other? Also many players would say that good customer service is part of a good game.
I think its already been made clear that we (darkfall fans) are not going to play a game that is not as good as darkfall just becuase the customer service is better.
Its a no win arguement you really should give it up and call some 1-800 for some good old fun customer service

they are wrong and to be frank I dont believe they even believe it. They just use that excuse because it buys them a little more time in a losing arguement.
I know for a fact that many people LOVE customer service and I know that many people make purchases based on the customer service. I think those people are silly most of the time.

"I play Tera for the gameplay"
very true. Very few games make it possible for the players themselves to create in effect what is game lore.
Ginger Magician is now pretty much a game feature as well as a real player (as an example)
