Guild Wars 2: "Walking the Walk" Blog Update; Design Manifesto Video

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

ArenaNet studio head Mike O'Brien updated the official ArenaNet blog today. Dubbed "Walking the Walk", this latest blog entry discusses all the details they've released on Guild Wars 2 since Mike's "design manifesto" article that kicked off the official ArenaNet blog months ago, and how ANet plans to now "walk the walk" by allowing gamers to get their hands on the game themselves at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany and later at PAX Prime in Seattle.

image

The demo that will be available to general public at Gamescom and PAX will consist of a level 1 human experience and a level 47 Charr experience. Mike encourages gamers to start out with the level 1 human to experience the game's personal storyline content, dynamic events system, cross-profession combos, visceral combat, and open world. Once you've got a hang for things, you'll want to pick up the level 47 Charr to check out some of the high-level abilities, though there won't be much in the way of storyline for the level 47 character as they don't want to spoil things for you.

You won't be playing alone, either, as the full ArenaNet team will be playing alongside youl. In fact, at least at Gamescom, ArenaNet will basically host a series of Guild Wars 2 LAN parties where developers will play with gamers 1AM to 11AM each day of the show. Now that's dedication!

Excited? Be sure to also check out the new Design Manifesto video that ArenaNet revealed alongside today's blog update. The video features members of the Guild Wars 2 team outlining the vision and features of the game along with tons of new gameplay footage, most of which will be part of the demo shown at PAX and Gamescom in a couple of weeks, and yes, this includes the giant dragon.

So far, everything about this game looks absolutely amazing! I can't wait to play it.

When faced with developers who supply insufficient information on games, ArenaNet's over-disclosure is certainly a nice change.

But I went from excited to overloaded and bored with all the talk. I want to know when I can play this, how much it's going to cost, is there going to be a free trial, etc.

I don't need a philosophical manifesto on development processes or whatever the recent PR pieces have been. You're starting to kill me with information overload.

    Then don't read.

The game will be B2P, so you pay for the game and that's it, no sub fees. Price will be around the usual for MMO's.

Don't know about a trial right at launch, is that common? I do know that GW had open beta weekends that were very informative regarding the GW gameplay, and I'm expecting the same for GW2.

No release date is known yet, so it'll be somewhere in 2011, I'm guessing Q2 but nothing is known yet.

I don't read the GW2 posts anymore, that's my point.

I was excited and was reading them early on, but the marginalia and miscellania they're throwing out now has gotten me to the point of barely even paying attention to the headlines anymore. let alone actually reading the articles.

Too much information. Limit press releases distributed to gaming sites to big important things. Post obscure details on your site for hard-core IP followers to devour, not to overwhelm what were once casual but earnest followers on more general websites.

Quality over quantity definitely applies here.

I think you're pretty unique in finding that there's too much info about GW2 around.

Besides, not everything that is posted on the official GW2 site or blog is being posted on other MMO forums, but it's up to those forums and sites themselves to determine what news they pick for their site and what not. If they post 90% of the news being posted on the GW2 site, then blame mmorpg.com or massively.com.

For the rest do what everyone does or what you probably already do for other games like the many F2P games: just ignore the news you're for the moment not interested in.

What's particularly funny is that while it may seem that ANet is constantly posting information and re-treading familiar ground, you still get people coming into the forums asking if there's a monthly fee, if you can jump, if/when there's going to be a beta, and other basic info.

These articles are for those people.

    Awesome video,too much info?

For someone interested in Guildwars 2 there might even be too little(visual) info.

I would have imagined an updated article on this video, not merely linking to the same info and giving a summary.

Instead something like an analysis, which might come later on.

    Regardless,thank you for showing it.

Just a few more days for watching some hands on demo gameplay!:)

They didn't force this site to show the clip or announce it as news. The stuff was posted on twitter and then their site. The so called casual earnest followers wouldn't be following their site OR twitter. So in the end, it was MMORPG.com whom posted this for you to see, not ArenaNet. Do not blame them because another site wanted to get in on the new stuff.

Unless you suggest ArenaNet totally bans anysites from posting any GW news...

    GW2 = WOW Killer

  • DubhlaithDubhlaith Member Posts: 1,012

This sounds just...awesome, but I have one important question.

Do they know Steeleye Span is a band?

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true — you know it, and they know it." —Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

    WTF? No subscription fee?

Yes they do, look at GW and there are plenty of pop culture references :)

As for too much info there are still things I'm waiting to hear about - how is gear going to work? Is crafting going to be player based and not NPC based like GW?

yeah sometimes i cant figure why people keep asking if GW2 will have a montly fees, it's killing me, it's clearly stated almost in everywhere that GW2 is B2P, even if you just got the time to open wikipedia and type in Guild Wars 2 you would know it's B2P

sometimes i feel like some people are just posting without effort of trying to find, they just login and ask question and logs off, seriously, it's funny people like these still exist

im not attacking anyone here, just a general stuffs that needs concern, please take some effort searching before splashing a question that have been splashed countless times

    So What Now?

Did you read the article? It was describing the demo at gamescom to allow people to judge for themselves. It's not a promise it's simply showing you the game.....

Your commenting on the mmorpg article about the ArenaNet blog post. It's fine to say that in comment to the video which the link you provided is perfectly adequate but this isn't mostly about the video but the blog post which doesn't really have any promises hence making your comment seem a bit misplaced here.
