I've tried a few f2p games and the most I ever spent was about 20.00 u.s. dollars on ddo. I believe I unlocked two classes and a character 2 character slots. I think that was about 20 dollars.

I have not played one of these so called f2p games to high level without paying.  So they are more like free to try, pay to play.  Games like ROM you need to spend far more than a normal subscription to get your gear to a playable state.  A free player can't exist at high levels in ROM for example.

For many of the other games, once you approach about two thirds of max level it almost becomes mandatory to purchase items that increase leveling, otherwise you can spend weeks on one level.

So at lower levels in these games spending is optional, but once you get to a certain point, you can no longer play for free.

If you like to make things, none of these games are free, making things always involves trips to the item shop for more pack space and enhancement items.

So basically anyone in this thread who claims to have not paid for anything in a f2p game has never taken a character to high level in one nor used their crafting system to any extent.

    Great.

Expect to be quoted by all the haters as the prime example of how much it costs to play these things. They love toting a single case of being spendthrift as a widespread panic.

lol don't attack the guy for at least being honest... Your post only really suggests you arnt in order to defend your position.

Whenever a F2P fan tells me how much they spend in game I silently times it by 100 for the true cost. For some reason a lot of F2P people seem very embarrassed to admit they spend money on these games, let alone how much.

You have no idea how many people tell me they don't pay anything on their Farmville, but the 'game' still makes over £500,000 a DAY.

With all these people spending so little, or nothing at all, it makes you wonder where all that revenue comes from eh?

So you are saying categorically, it is just impossible to take any character to high level without using the item shop?

Not that it takes a long time or more effort but that it is just not possible?

    Yes.

$15 a month for DDO, and probably spent a little over $100 buying points. I'm about to spend $50 to buy more points when they go on sale.

Don't really care what someone with no job or a minimum wage job thinks. I, too, would recommend you not play games that cost money.

its not impossible but at that point the game stops beeing fun

I spent 15/month for premium membership on requiem online, played till level 63 or so the grind even with premium was horrible and even with my premium mebership i was unable to compete with cash shop users ....

I hope you have the idea now

There are sooooooooooooooooooo many f2p games that even if it was true, i don't really see a reason to be as stubborn to cap a character if you don't enjoy it anymore. I play games as long as I enjoy playing them, not up to an arbitrary level cap decided by a random developer. As soon as I find myself *grinding my way* rather than *enjoying the travel* i quit (or just hold for a couple months), by that time something else will probably have captured my attention.

I subbed for about four months to DDO after playing it as a f2p for a few months but that would be it.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

If he can shell out $2-3k easily he'd probably be wasting them anyway in some way (plasma TVs, tranny hoes, iPads...)

If he enjoyed spending them that way, it's ok.

I haven't spent any cash on F2P games, though I only tried a couple of them for few weeks.

It's interesting to know how much players are spending on such games, and how long they played the game they bought items for.

I'd be curious to know how long doctormozg played or in which game he spent his money on.

  • BMoorBMoor Member Posts: 202

I've spent about $150 over a 2.5 year period on a F2P and may spend more if there's a particularily interesting costume or character.

  • LoktofeitLoktofeit Member RarePosts: 14,247

About $80 total in the past two years of Combat Arms, $20 in a year of Florensia and whatever the monthly fee is for DDO. The last one is actually a subscription with extras (500 DDO points a month), so I normally put that in the subscription catgeory. Since it's a F2P (and an awesome one at that) I listed it here.

Thank you for the clarification which also goes to my point.

It is more than feasible for someone to take a character to high level in a f2p game without spending money "if" they don't mind the grind. Also, "if" they don't feel like they have to be immediately competitive. Though I do wonder if one can ever be competitive in some of these games if the cash shop items essentially buy "win".

It seems there are many people who dont' really like or want grind. But there are many people who dont' mind it. I myself am one of them.

I would still be playing Lineage 2, with my character's current level experiencing 4 kills for .01% exp, if it wasn't for the economy.

There are many players who can easily put up with the grind as it is just not an issue. So that is why I find it difficult to accept part of your premise that a person who has never taken a character to high lvl in a f2p because of the grind.

The part I do take for truth would of course be the idea that if a person can buy clear advantages over a person who doesn't use the cash shop, then it would be impossible to play in a meaningful manner.

DDO (and soon LotRO) are hybrids... I wouldn't count the sub, but I would count the money spent prior to subbing...

DDO.  In that I subbed this summer, and spent the free TP's on stuff.

I never paid for any F2P games yet. I am not sure if i will.  Personally, i think those games are totally pay 2 win. And i know, i am not going to spend like crazy.

Vote your answer and throw some words

I have tried close to every Pay2Win MMO because my system is a bit outdated and can't handle the new games. So I have spend alot of time hopping from one F2P to the next. And I've paid absolutely nothing to F2P, and yes it means you're limited in every direction and yes it makes the game stink pretty fast.

For the moment I'm doing some Co-ops on Steam, cuz the MMO market is way beyond messed-up.

But they can still be enjoyed.

If I buy a nice suit it is my intention of having it for a while. However, I am under no illusions that "fabric" is going to last forever.

Pixels are just as real as anything else. One can perceive them and one can appreciate and make use of any forms they take on a computer screen.

After all, we are all on a site for online "video" games that are essentially pixels. Therefore those pixels do have value to us as these games are of interest.

60$ on Mabinogi over a year and a half (bought 30k NX, twice. 30k NX=30$)

As for P2P, bought DarkFall+6 month deal back in November so 70$, and also paid for a 3 month sub in July so 40$.

So far the items I bought in Mabinogi were 2 Character Card for additional character customizations,2 Mounts (Ground and Flying) and 2 other Pets that I use for combat (Pets can be used for solo-players, they can fill in for a party-mate but are still somewhat limited in what they can do due to AI of the mobs and your pet AI (that you can program by the way). Pets are pretty terrible in groups so you don't see them very often in groups, unless for healing or extra storage.   It's not exactly "game-breaking" item, it will help solo players to complete certain task of low level dungeons, but it can never replace an actual teammate for later dungeons or quest that requires a party, pets would  just keeps dying even with a good AI.

Dungeon Fighter Online, I haven't bought anything, though I actively play. Avatars can be bought from other players using in-game currency, which is how I bought my avatars.

Also played many other F2Ps but never spent any money on them.

You can enjoy having your nice suit for several years even if you wear it every day.

I think that buying ingame items is more like buying lots of candy bars than buying a suit...  it will give you enjoyment but it will not last for long.
