I admit it I'm feeling old and slow right now.

Ever since abandoning the much slower gameplay of mmorpg and joining in online multiplayer games I've felt my age.
From Starcraft 2 to Bad Company 2 to Super Street Fighter 4 I'm getting my ass pounded like a cheap street hooker.

I don't see how I can compete with these kids that have all day to play.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I'm 40 years old and quit playing those types of games years ago because I don't have the hand-eye coordination any more. lol

My 9 and 11 year old boys destroy me at FPS games on the Xbox360.

I used to love the pvp mmorpgs also (UO, DAOC, AOC, etc), but I pretty much suck at pvp nowadays so I'm switching over to PVE only games.

    Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard

Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.

I picked up BC2 on sale for 39.99 and I'm starting to wish I didn't. I get completely smoked, seriously within seconds. When you get your ass handed to you so fast tha after ten games you still don't understand the rules somethings wrong.

My old CS self would laugh his ass off at this pathetic mmorpg retiree.

I can still play FPS's and such on the PC, but I just don't have the dexterity anymore to use console game controllers. I was getting owned left and right in MAG when that came out, but can still hold my own in UT, Combat Arms and Q3Arena.  The speed of the games seems to remain the same... I'm jsut getting slower at using the controls. :)

its just prectice, play more and over the time you should start to get better, also remember to use your head, try to asmbush then, kids don't have much patience and like to run in rooms shooting everything so you just need to time then and back stab or flank then, sometimes you don't even need to shoot, XD team flag match I just run to get the flag when all the enemy then was rushing to the other side :P

I can see it now. Me telling my wife I need to practice a video game more because children and college kids are kicking my ass in Bad Company.

I think one of the above posters way be right when it comes to controls. I'm playing this on 360 I have no issue playing L4D2 on pc.

Well while I'm not that old, I used to be amazing at CS and games like that. I am still decent at PC shooters, but I try to play console shooters and can't even get a 0.5 kill to death ratio, everyone is freakishly good at it, my 11 year old brother kills me any time I try to play against him it's just insane. But I can go back and play the perfect dark remake and annihilate everyone, so I guess it's just the style of games that are coming out now. Really fast shooters are hard to get into.

I can sometimes hold my own but for the most part I get my butt handed to me in MW2 on the PS3.  I just don't play enough to know the maps and the good spots.

Why don't you just go looking for friends your own age to play with? There are places on the web for gamers over 30. 2old2play comes directly to mind. Get a nice big friends list and just play in parties or private games. Problem solved.

Personaly never was good with console FPS games, just something as mentioned with the controlers not working for me, but kick ass with the same games that are out on console when I play them on PC.

But obviously you might get your but kicked aswell on PC when just entering for the first few times, atleast I do and with more play you become more experianced/better at playing them. Every game takes practice to become a better player, so nothing really to worry about telling your wife, though simply don't call it practice if it might sound strange to her (none-gamers often don't understand the gamers lingoimage), just call it "play more often to become better". Same rules apply in real life, obviously not everyone will succeed even after some "practice"

I am starting to feel older too. I feel old even when am playing an MMORPG. I find that I do not have the time to devote to being a great player. Don't get me wrong, I am a good player, but I have not gotten the best equipment and I couldn't wield it even if I had it because I am not at a high enough level. We are just a little more casual.

I understand you.. hah... I'm not an old guy, but I have been playing MMOs for the past few years exclusively. Recently started playing games such as Starcraft 2. I find that I much prefer playing easy maps in SC2 and easy matches due to my slow gaming nature.. It is going to take me a while to speed up and catch up to these fanatic kids who play 24/7 and try not to turn into one of them. You know the whole "HOW COULD I OF POSSIBLY LOST?! I AM THE BEST! HAXER!" train of thought.

But I do enjoy going back to an MMO like lotro occasionally to slow things down.

Yesterday I spend the entire day playing BC2 squad death match. I sent the wife and kids to grandma's :)
After A couple of hours I started learning the maps and at the end got a few upgrades and even had a .8 kill/ death ratio which is great considering it was .2 last week.

The old guy is doing it!!!!!!

    You aren't alone.

A lot of folks in all the different types of games ...even PvE... are getting more and more frustrated.  PvP is a young guy's game, but these days, it seems PvE is getting more and more demanding of perfect, instant execution, with many of the abilities so interdependant on complex stats that you almost have to take a course on a game to survive in it.

It's all based on the fact that devs are hardcore twitch players that got their dream job...they think that it isn't fun unless only a few can succeed...heh there are a lot that don't want to study a game or practice at it...those that don't see a game as a sport and more like a hobby....they just want to play a game and they aren't getting what they want these days.

The good news is though that the hobbists have money, so someone will eventually see the profit in designing games again for that segment.

SC2 has been waited for by people who been playing SC1 ELEVEN YEARS...some professionally D=.  Give it a year and the competition will be far less difficult.

BC2 is a strange example because, well, everyone who just starts gets effing pounded.  WIthout the right unlocks, it makes it difficult to compete.  The early engineer gun is terrible for some time, the assault guns are terrible until the AN-94, the snipers don't get any better til the 3rd or 4th sniper, and the medic guns are kinda meh til you have a M60 and magnum ammo.

I really dislike how overpowering they made the unlocks in BC2, but eh, overall the game is top notch.  They lessened the impact of flying vehicles compared to BF2 which at first I hated but I've come to realize how important that was to the game.  I think my best jet score was like 119-0 on Kubra dam on a 64P map just doing bombing runs (we took their pad D=).

I am 40+ and do not have problems playing those games.  Just do not have the time for most console games or FPS.

Why? Cuz u need to kinda ramp up to the adrenaline level needed to play them.  Get your game on or get in the zone.  My problem is I stress all day and any game that induces more stress or makes me log in daily is not conducive to relaxing any longer.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

It is good to slow things down when you can. Then again, I am going to be spending more time on my MMO because they are hosting an event that looks pretty cool. They are going to do some races for in-game and out-of-game prizes. I want to see if I can muster up the speed to compete with the more hardcore and race for a mystery prize.

  • Try not to feel too bad about Starcraft 2. The multiplayer can take alot of getting used to. I normally obliterate people online in RTS games and I'm still stuck in the Bronze Leage watching replays and learning new tricks.

You definitely slow down as you age.  That is something we must all be prepared for.  But also the whole 'hacking' industry is a lot more sophisticated these days than it was 10+ years ago.  There are companies that make hacks to get around the anticheat software of both pc and console.

Before I do eventually come out of my shell and join this growing group of gamers with...uhmm...unavoidable effects of aging, I'd just like to ask - is it even possible to start "feeling old and slow right now" at your mid 20s?

    Please be gentle.

  • Rockgod99Rockgod99 Member Posts: 4,640

I'm actually getting pretty good at the basic mechanics of BC2 now. Kinda bothers me that people could just buy unlock kits but other than that im cruising along playing Squad deathmatch and have moved on to Rush mode.

my Kill/death ratio is around 2.3 kills to 1 death so thats ok for an old guy.

Once I get a higher rank im going to dabble in the new Co-op DLC but until then ill stick with my little assault guy trying to unlock that damn shotgun attatchment to my rifle.

As for SC2 im in the newb league and have been able to win a match or so.

Sadly its time for this gamers stage coach to turn into a pumpkin because my vacation is done and i wont get onto Live until sunday.

Yes... the whole "old and slow" thing comes about as you have more responsibility in life and can no longer devote large blocks of time in competitive multiplayer like you did as a younger gamer.

I remember the days of CS, 10 hour blocks of nothing but Mountain Dew and CS clan sessions and before that it was Quake II and Duke Nuke em 3D.

The only problem I see here is a huge azz lack of TESTOSTERONE. Cmon guys, man the fk up....This is embarrassing. Im forty years old as well, and I have no problems with pvp.

If you cant handle it because of twitch characteristics then USE YOUR HEAD AND CUNNING. That should make up for the slow response time. Unless of course your a bit slow. Then nothing will help.

Seriously you guys, your starting to sound like old women.. I CANT HANDLE PVP ANYMORE, IM GETTING TOO OLD AHHHHHHHHHHH FINGER CRAMP/ARTHIRITIS...LET ME PUT MAH DEPENDS ON FIRST AND GRAB MAH METAMUCIL THEN ILL BE READY GUYS...

If I ever get to the point where you guys are at, Ill find the highest waterfall I can and do a swan dive. To everyone else, dont listen to these guys. There ARE testosterone filled forty year olds who will rock your sheot..And Im one of em ...:)

The pussification of Americas men continues..sadly....
