Whats wrong with Star Wars Galaxies?

deidesdeides Member Posts: 197

Well i was trying out ryzom, whe i suddenly discovered that in order to go from the trial to p2p, you had to disburse 29.95, which techically only gave you 15 days or playtime... So i decided to give SWG a go.

I have to admit i've heard many people say negative things about SWG, that they didnt like it, that it wasnt "star wars-like". Well im just starting off, but I really like the game, and the gameplay - so heres a question to all your naysayers; what is wrong with SWG? Why didnt you like it?

Its got an open skill system (I hate limitting class-systems with a passion), ok quests and mostimportantly - placer cities and housing!

**EDIT**

Well, after over 2k views and countless posts, the general consensu was that swg had initially received a bad rating, and a bad rep because of a bad launch.  SWG is still my favorite MMO, and even though i have only been playing for a short while, i can say its the only mmo that comes close to bringing me the same UO feel i have been looking for.

I would therefore challenge those who gave SWG a bad rating, or simply havent tried the game because of the bad launch - to read up on the changes to the game, and perhaps even give it a second go :)

SWG has very good graphics, great atmosphere, one of the best crafting systems (even though it could still use some tweaks), and fun combat. The problem is after scratching the surface, you realize there is nothing underneath. I once heard someone describe the game as a mile wide and an inch deep, and that about sums it up. I still get the urge to go back and hang out in a cantina from time to time, but the game needs some serious depth work before I would think of playing it again.

FYI, this was all before the space expansion. I have heard good things about the expansion, but I still like games that happen on the ground, and I think SWG needs work in that area.

I bought SWG (and JTL) a couple of weeks ago mostly out of curiousity.

I honestly wasn't expecting much- i was very pleasantly suprised.

Much more deep, complex and involving than EQ2 or WoW. So many more things to do and many different facets to the game. I can't agree with the previous poster who said SWG was "shallow". It certainly isn't now.

It's not perfect but i think its one of the best mmorpgs out.

I play SWG currently and there is nothing wrong with it whatsoever. It is no worse and no better than anything on the market ATM.It has many different aspects to it.

I think what people cant wrap their minds around is that it is for the most part a "virtual world".There are mission booths but they dont really handout enough credits(unless you go smuggler)to keep you doing the missions. Not to mention the fact that the missions are very very bland and dull.

The grind on upper levels is huge and it takes an extremly dedicated player to achieve these lofty goals. To get to the elite professions takes a long time for the casual player. If you stick with it great.I would suggest getting in a PA that does things together.

SWG got a bad rap at launch because people expected it to be the best game ever.Dissapointment set in when everyone realized the game (like ALL mmo's at launch) needed at least a years work.Ive played a LOT worse than SWG.It takes a long time to achieve goals past the very basic skills and is probably not for everyone in this aspect.

Personally i love the game because im a scifi fan.But my life being what it is i may be forced to quit playing soon.I realistically cannot devote enough time to the game when i have a home to take care of a daughter growing up and a fulltime job.Maybe if the DAOC casual server becomes reality and popular more companies will do this as well.

I remember the CEO of SWG released a statement that the game is broken and in need of some major fixes. Ive spoken to a SOE employee recently and he also admitted SWG is still in need of some major changes. Very disappointing game for when i played it for 3 months. The worse thing weas all the promises that SOE made for the game and never seeing any of them. They revamped the Jedi system 3 times already and now its just one long quest to get it.

Galaxies are pretty good. They're big and impressive.

It's the Star Wars part that puts me off.

I dissagree.... They've added tons of new missions that you can get from NPC's... you need to actively find those NPC's however and their missions aren't bland or dull at all. Sure the MISSION TERMINAL missions are bland and dull, they're just bounty missions... "Go do this and we'll pay you". Find the NPC missions, they're a lot better. And the Space Missions are fun too.

I also take issue with the statement that it's hard to gain an elite class. When I started playing SWG (and to this day) I played around 1 to 2 hours a day. Within 1.5 months I was a Master Bounty Hunter, arguably one of the hardest skill sets to master. 3 weeks later I was a Master Pistoleer / TKM, A week after that I'm nearly Master Commando. It wasn't hard work and it wasn't a lot of playtime. My character is well under 15 days total played at this point, 9 months later.

I also really love the space side of the game. Its set up so that you can master a pilot skill tree without impacting any of your ground game skills so it's possible to be an ace pilot and a master smuggler (kinda like Han) if you so desire.

Thus far? I've found SWG difficult enough to keep you interested but it's not much of a "grind" at all. The game is deep, especially if you get into the GCW and do some of the NPC missions.

    I will say this:
Anyone who wants to become a Jedi better have a LOT of time on thier hands. Some people moan about how long it takes to become a Jedi but I dissagree with them. Jedi SHOULD be hard to get. It SHOULD take a ton of time to get. Because Jedi should be RARE. They're the single most powerful force in the game. The last thing we need is everyone having a Jedi 3 days after they buy the game.

I enjoy SWG a great deal.... it's easily my favorite MMO ever (and I've played a ton of em).

Some people think there will be a trial in May.  I might try it before that....

I strongly suspect they'll release a trial around May timeframe. But you can pick up the game AND JTL for under $40. It comes with 30 days of play. No worse than buying any other game to try it out.

Up to you though. Like I said, I suspect they'll release a trial around the time ROTS hits the theatres to leach off the visibility of the movie.

Take an amazing universe concept like Star Wars and turn it into a simplistic shadow of an MMO.... I wouldnt have thought it was even possible if I hadnt seen it with my own eyes.

I played from Beta and about 4-5 months into release. Im not sure how I could be more disapointed but given time Im sure the Devs would work out how... image

Yes yes, it sucked 4-5 months into release. Most of us who played the Beta WARNED you it was going to suck for up to a YEAR after release but nobody listened. Not the Devs and not the slobbering masses and even some beta fans didn't listen either.

Now, over a year after release, it's almost a totally different game. Much deeper, a lot more fun... a lot more STAR WARS and has spaceflight, space combat and much better PVP. The TEF system was scrapped and completely redone (much better now!) and they're re-vamping combat as we write this.

Overall? I hated SWG during Beta and refused to buy it. I tried the free trial last June and fell in love with the game they SHOULD have had at release. And now it's just that much better and a revamp of the entire skill system and combat system to boot.

Be bitter all you want but SWG is not the same game it was a year ago.

Maybe if there is a trial I will take another look because I wanted SWG to be so much better than I found it.... If indeed it has improved I really want to see that.

Unless something has drastically changed since the game first came out. It really isn't that great. The graphics are just mediocre, the atomsphere is ok at best, the combat is amazingly clunky and boring, and the crafting system is more formula driven then you would be led to believe. However, if they have truly changed it.. I mean REALLY changed it, then it might be ok. Otherwise I would recommend staying clear.

  • deidesdeides Member Posts: 197

Actually i was looking for a trial too... but i coudlnt find one... so heres what i did -

I downloaded the trial (10 day SWG trial) from fileplanet .. its inactive so they dont send you a cdkey, but at least youg et the client right?

Then i bought a cdkey from Enotts (19.95, you buy a cdkey, and they email it to you directly, good service).

I figure, 19.95 isnt bad to buy a game - sides playing most games monthly is 15.xx so what the hell. Well i can honestly say im not dissapointed, and im even thinking of pre-ordering the rage of the wookies expansion - 24$ and you get JTL and ROW.

SWG is good if you ask me, i come from Ultima online and i really despise class-based skill systems... its so restrictive.

SWG is the best mmorpg around. Sure it had problems at launch. I was one of their biggest critics, however the game is completely different than a yr ago. Here's why its the best...

Graphics - even after almost 2 yrs out, its still one of the best graphical games around. With the exception of EQ2, SWG is better than everyone else AND doesnt require a $4,000 system to run well.

Emotes - By far the best ever. After playing WoW and seeing the ridiculously simplistic type of emotes, it made me appreciate SWG. There are so many it boggles the mind. Most mmorpgs dont even bother to program emotes. SWG didnt just put them in, they went much further by making them entertaining.

Chat - Call me crazy, but I find it hard to play a game without a chat bubble above a player's head. In games like WoW or EQ2 I kept missing peeps talking to me in the text box. Factor in guild chat, planet chat, auction chat, group chat, etc and its just too hard to try and keep up with stuff. Nothing is easier than seeing someone's chat above their head. I think only Coh had chat bubbles.

Housing - I've played many many mmorpgs, SWG is the only one with housing in the game. Yeah EQ2 has housing but its not really in the game. Instanced apts isnt the same thing. No other game gives you sooooo many choices, not to mention allowing you to place it wherever you like.

Crafting - even the most cynical haters will admit SWG has the best crafting system in place. This system ties in nicely with pretty much the only player based economy of any mmorpg around. The player's talent and ability determines what the combat players get to use.

merchants - i have yet to find a game where i could hire an npc merchant and place him in my own shop to sell my goods like SWG. This feature alone makes SWG stand out.

quests - everyone talks about eq2 and WoW for quests. Well those quests are made for idiots who want everything handed to them. Call me crazy, but I prefer my quests like SWG...mysterious, hidden, not well-known, with neat rewards I can use to decorate my house. Most peeps who complain "lack of content" havent even touched half the hidden quests in this game.

Instanced zones - this was the big reason I quit EQ2. Everywhere you go it was an instanced load screen. If SWG was the same the following would happen...travelling in theed approaching the woods, load screen for instanced zone. Coming up to your house, instanced zone. Leaving house, instanced zone. going to weapon depot to farm npc, instanced zone...BLEH BLEH BLEH. With the exception of WoW which is a much much smaller world, we at SWG are fortunate to play a game with so few instanced zone areas.

Loot - unlike other games, loot in SWG doesnt take over the game and render crafters completely pointless. In games like WoW weaponsmiths are pointless as the loot drops are always better. Also items dont decay in most mmorpgs. In SWG the items gradually wear out, guaranteeting more business for crafters.

crafter / combat - most mmorpgs alow one to do both without penalty to template. This results in peeps not needing to rely on each other for goods. If I can make my own armor by becoming a smith and it doesnt weaken my combat ability I will. In SWG, if I go weaponsmith / merchant I wont have many skil points left to become an effective combat type. This key element forces me to become good at one thing and reliant on others. Every mmorpg I've played besides SWG makes this terrible mistake.

I could go on and on but you get the point. SWG is the best most complete mmorpg to date.

SWG is one of the mainstream MMOs that I do appreciate, and I only played the trial.

How is the JTL space combat. Is it more arcade or simulations. Would it make since to use a joystick with it. Compare the flight model to Battlefield1942s and WWIIOLs if you play them; yes I realize that those are air and this is space. I'm trying to get a feel for how deep the air combat goes, hopefully it doesnt just boil down to rolling toward the enemy and pulling up till you get a shot.

  • ElnatorElnator Member Posts: 6,077

If you ever played X-Wing or Tie-Fighter that is how JTL is.

If you never played them? Think of Privateer
    Or Freelancer
Hmm.... Or any Flight Sim Combat game.

It's First Person (or 3rd if you REALLY want to)
    It's twitch
    It's realistic as hell

It's like being in the cockpit of a starfighter (which you are :))

They really did a great job with JTL...

As to whether you should use a joystick? I do... friends who use a mouse say it works ok... I could never get the feel for that though, I use my joystick exclusively for spaceflight.

Add in another factor for immersion with JTL.I play it with a joystick and its great i cant wait to see the asteroid mining get added.

I just got done playing WoW and while im glad i tried it it fell far from expectations.Glad it was just a ten day trial/buddy key.I cant understand why SWG gets such a bad rap when WoW is the frontrunner on horribly conceived games. The game just hurts to look at.

Yeah yeah i know its within the context of the game. That game needs help but most mmo's do in the 1st year.

    Longlive SWG!!!

Yeah, i remember when swg came out, so many people complained that it sucked - and i didnt even bother trying it out till last week... but I dont know why on earth people would complain about it now... the graphics are amazing (oh yeah they are good, dont care what others say.. i played eq2 and the graphics had some kind of ... blurr... gave me headaches) and the gameplay is great.

Thats why i created this thread, i wanted to know why people give swg such dissregard... well now i got the answer : bad beta/launch. I really think those who didnt like it in launch should try it now, its really good.

If youre willing to spend 20$ for one month of play, follow the steps in my previous post.

2 yrs... of playing... and still having watching the changes.. the jedi holo's to the long quests.

I have WoW, eq2, swg with exp.... i also play ao, neocron 2... and another name

I spend more time on swg and its expansion more than anythin else..

the merchants, the quests.... exploring things...

what makes it stand out now morethan ever is the 3 tier system

1st tier is pvm which player vs monster.. the factional npc's leave you alone andyou can hunt till your hearts content...

2nd tier pve.. here the player takes on factions npcs, [imp/rebel] and monsters...

and finally pvp... monster, npcs... and people..

Is SWG a good game ?  YEEESSSS !!!!!!!!!

Is it bug free ?  No !   No MMORPG ever is.

SWG gives you much more freedom in what you do than almost any game on the market. It also gives you the freedom to be bored to tears if you do the same thing over and over again instead of trying out 34 professions and 10 worlds. I am NEVER bored in SWG .. Even after 18 months there is SOOO much I have not seen yet, have not done yet ... and I play a lot.

Crafting : best in the MMORPG genre IMHO.

Combat : is undergoing a complete overhaul. For the better IMHO. Reduces the need to be buffed 100  % of the time. Reduces the ability to solo everything in the game. Increases the fun in PvP.

Space : Joystick twitch fighter plane feeling (like in the movies). You will love it. Try doing a sort of trench run around the circumference of a star destroyer, with 104 turbolasers trying to shoot you down. Good luck ! There is a whole fleet of 200+ ships up there that I crafted myself ... I like that.

Player Cities : tell you what. I played an architect for over a year before switching to shipwright. There is a player city which is made up almost exclusively of houses crafted by me. If I stand on a nearby hill and see 150+ of my  houses ... i almost burst with pride, even after so many months ! When you see that you make a difference in the game ... its a great motivation.

Community :  I dare say SWG has now one of the best communities of the current games on the market. Most of the powergamers have burned themselves out on becoming Jedi. The forever hopping L33T speaking idiots have moved on to WoW and other games. The experienced multigame guilds that dominated the early game have moved on to other, newer games. What is left are people who like Star Wars, people who are roleplayers, people who like freedom of choice instead of being stuck in one profession forever, people how maybe just want a chat window with nice grafics around it on some evenings ... not wanting to grind or explore or craft but just to relax in a cantina and dance and talk.

Support :  IMHO customer support - once justly condemned to be shitty - has greatly improved. Assigning CSRs permanently to certain servers - so they come to know who the jerks are and who are people with valid problems to be solved - has helped a lot and formed a bond, where CSRs are identifying with THEIR server and wanting it to run smoothly. Also the event team has had great success recently, as the event perks you can buy in game are a GREAT (!!!!) and fun way to organize player events. And who knows ... maybe Vader checks out your base defenses or Han Solo sends you on a daring mission to bail out one of his buddies after just walking into a player city cantina.

In summary .... May is a good time to (re)start the game. Combat revamped. New planet added. New content added. Episode III in the cinema. Probably new free trial and offers to former SWG players. Definitely worth taking a look at.

    Have fun

I just take a deep breath and smile, hearing all those good thing about SWG::::02::

But one question: You guys are saying that it's cool to use a joystick to control the fighter ( I can imagine that), but how about a gamepad?
Do you think it would work as well?
