It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
1: You have 17 equiptment slots. Every piece of equiptment degrades fairly fast with weapons degrading faster than any other piece. Every piece depending on what you wear and what class your playing at the time, needs a different craftsman to repair it. Each piece of gear takes roughly 1 minute to repair no matter the % of degredation. NPC repairers only repair an item to 50%. I wont go into upgrades and how they are gotten. its still sorta in the air if some will be NPC sold or mostly all from crafting.
2: There is no AH. There are market instances where each seller puts up a store (FFXIV calls them retainers). You are charged for the store, charged to put an item up for sale and charged for selling. There is no way to see what everyone has unless you manually check each and every store. A person can set thier store on top of yours currently which can make targeting yours.. harder. These retainers are independant of your character and can be selling even while your offline.
3: To craft a levequest it takes clicking through 9 windows to begin crafting. If you LD for any reason you fail the quest(this goes for any type of levequest) . Skillup are randomly awarded even if you succeed in the crafting.(its a little more indepth than this but for all intents and purposes, its random) . There are no recipies or recipe lists in game. To craft you have to figure out the right combination of materials and once you do, you have to remember them. There is no way in game currently to keep track of them.
4: Alt+ tab will auto disconnect your game. I list this here because you will need a second monitor to look up recipes for the above crafting.
5: While in battle, you have to manually target each mob. If a mob is hitting you it does not auto target them. If your fighting 2 mobs at 1 time and you kill the first, the second will usually get 2 more shots on you before you can target it and get a skill to activate. (this is subjective but on avg its 2 shots depending on lag or how many other targets are around you.)
6: Currently there is no true tutorial. pretty much everything you figure out on your own or by reading websites. The first few minutes of the game is a"sorta" battle tutorial that plays without actually telling you what to do.
7: The UI is slow to respond to either control scheme be it KB/mouse or gamepad. Multiple errors accure depending on numerous situations. Gamepad keys are not working for all window menus most notibly the accept command for selecting crafting levequests or putting skills on your hotbar. It takes multiple windows to complete simple tasks in the UI for every task.
8: The game still stutters even on high end machines. A lot of high end configurations are performing worse than midrange systems comparably.
9: FFXIV's way of telling mob strength is out of whack depending on the mob. A green dot goat hits for 200's while a green dot mole hits for 25's.
10: if you die on a levequest you auto fail it and dont get any rewards.
11: If you pan the camera out and come across a wall, the camera will not auto pan back out to where you had it set. You will need to pan it back out yourself.

Yikes, looks like this is really turning into a problem with some people. I understand FFXIV and SquareEnix are their own idea makers, but when it comes to the GUI, there's just good ideas and bad ideas.
I hope for the best for this game simply for the competition, but it seems like they built this game from a pre-WoW perspective. Will still be trying it out just to exhaust all my options.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I know what to expect and look for improvements on when I play at launch.
I'm amazed the same people that cry wow clone, are the ones that bash games for not going the wow/themepark route... What the hell is it with these people????
Look... I am buying this game, but my concerns are not about it being wow clone, or pre wow w/e... I am worried about all this crap I am hearing about the controls and the bad performance on top of the line computers. Other things have cuaght my attention aswell.

in my eyes thats a good thing
Orange.
Wow this is what i call a stone-age game...mmorpg going back in time..instead of improving...
haha thats what beta board suggested; copy WoW if they cant figure out how to make UI work.
You got lucky on the complete the quest after death then. I tested this on 8 levequests today. Every single one failed me upon death. Could be a bug i guess.
Im sad to say that no there is no Ah planned for release.
yea you can use an NPC to repair everything. They "only" repair any item to 50% tho and they are sorta expensive.
So instead of having buttons and menus in easily recongizable places, making everything more complicated and random is a good thing?
I think your eyes got some rose glass in them.

This is why my CE for FFXIV was cancelled and now Cataclysm is in order for this year. Sadly Square Enix lost the winning forumal they had for FFXI when they were making FFXIV.
Cataclysm is even worse. -____- I'm in that beta, too. xP
(And by worse, I mean just not exciting.)
i knew I would get a response like this the moment I stepped out to smoke my cigarette. Either way it goes people are bashing the game now for not having a wow like combat system. Kind of ironic I think.

Atleast it doesn't leave your fingers in knots.

I would have to agree with you on this one. I got into the beta played cata and unsubbed my entire wow account after that mess.

XIV doesn't. I use a controller.
Lessens pain in my wrists from carpal tunnel, too.
there is no reason for all the name calling. I know exaclty what you are talking about. I played pre cu swg and the interface /targetting system was horrid. I think what people are talking about is something along the lines of this. I was calling it combat , because that is where the problems would arise. As oppose to a more wow user-frienldy targetting/combat system.

Edit: Nm, found an answer to my own question.
I understand that the FFXIV combat has a similar feel to the single player games. Kind of like a "on next attack" type of combat. That's fine, whatever. However, the targeting system that even WoW uses has been in place since EQ. No point in reinventing the wheel. Sorry for calling you names, my GTX 480 just got here and the UPS guy was giving me a hell of a time.

Controller for the computer or planning on waiting for the PS3 release?

Just more for me not pre-order, and also just not buy the game and wait for GW2
Currently playing: N/A
Retired from: GW, WAR, Aion, LOTRO, Rift, SW:TOR, Vinductus
Well, gratz on your upgrade. I was gonna go with the gtx 460, would be an upgrade from my 9800gtx+ I am using atm.
480 I hear tend to generate lots of heat, so I assume you will be taking poper measures to cool it.
Anyhow, I like the wow targetting system. I think they should have went with it, hopefully this game isn't designed with the expectations that you would use a controller. I know it is a ps3 game and square soft/enix have been making console games forever. I honestly don't feel like buying a controller to play this game. I prefer my keyboard :P
EDIT*** yea, i am playing this one on PC, so no controller for me.

Do yourself a favor. if you really intend to buy this game, go to newegg and buy a gamepad.
It's not too bad really. It's mostly the horror stories from people running it in SLI or with poorly cooled cases. I decided on the NZXT Phantom, which has 8 fans.
Looks like to make the best of this game you're going to need a controller. ><

They are putting in the same alternative WASD control scheme from FFXI, and I had no problems playing with that - I don't see why anyone else would either, but it works fine either with that or a gamepad. A gamepad certainly isn't required to "get the most out of the game" - it's just personal preference.
Sir dont kid yourself. its exponentially easier to play the game currently with a gamepad. Im testing with both.
