Ok first off dont blame fan boys. Blame the idiots who think thi sis a first person shooter flight simulation game. Wake up is an mmorpg. Which means liek all rpgs the majority of storylines will be ground based. Also the rail shooter is probably the way all future space combat will be handled.

Making a flight sim game takes up a massive amount of dev time and server space. theyd have to cut half the ground stuff just to fit it in. For waht a 2-3 pct of the games content. No way. I liked it they were giveng us ships as houses and to move from place to place that was cool to me.

Im a huge star wars fan boy and what im nto is a flight sim type of gamer i hate those games. Id perfer a rail shooter. To be honest not cause its easier but because it makes it so i can finish the stuff. Ill admit the easier part plays a part but a full scale flight sim space fight is harder and not everyoen has the ability or the comp to handle that kinda stuff.

Thing about mmos are they all have to cater to a broad audience not just the flight sim fan boys. so i dobut they ever go anywhere past the rail shooter cause a rail shooter is easier for all gamers and is more likely to appeal to people like me and to casual gamers who arent in for a full scale flight sim game. When they make this a flight sim mmo then expect free form flight till then keep dreaming.

I also have seen them say u have quests u can group as and have shown group combat. Problem i think most of us have it we dont know what kinda end game content its gonna have. Weather they will have raid type instances where u get a big group of 10 or more together Or 5 mans or 8 mans ect. Until we know for sure what kinda end game there is alot of people will question the group portion of the game as end game is where most mmos do the majority of grouping .

Not to say I think a rail shooter is a great addition to any MMO. It's just that I can't say how "lazy" they've been until I see what they've actually produced in full. I'm not going to assume anything on space at this point, frankly I really don't care about it.

IMO one specific feature at times can be meaningless when judged against the full product. Before I'm to be included in any of your "we" arguments, I'd like to at the very least know something solid on the actual product.

If you're equating gameplay like X-Wing vs TIE Fighter as a flight sim along the lines of Falcon 4.0, IL-2 Sturmovik, or any other true sim, you're an ignorant fool.  XvT and the other games of the X-Wing series (Rogue Squadron series do NOT belong in the X-Wing series) gave freedoom of flight, basic system management (how much power you put in weapons, shields, engines), weapons usage, small group commands, etc.  You didn't have to worry about stalling speeds and flipping through real life cockpit indicators and controls.

We're not asking for a flight sim.

We're not asking for an overly simplistic, mindnumbingly dull that you drool out of your mouth, d**n rail shooter either.

We're asking for something in the middle, which a space game in the mold of the X-Wing series of games would ably fill.

Deep enough gameplay and combat.  Freedom to maneuver and fight to the player's wishes.  There's also been the desire to customize the outfitting of the ship's equipment.

This is going to take the immersion to a whole new level... (NOT!)

Don't get me wrong. I'm waiting with huge anticipation for this MMO, but this trailer of a "rails-on" space combat just killed the hype for me a good bit. Bioware was always saying how the game should be immersive, have that Star Wars feel, give you that awesome hero feeling.

How does a rails-on combat system contribute to any of that in even the slightest?

A fullform 3 axis space component would be the ultimate in immersion.

    • If you fancy yourself an above average pilot, form a wing and prove yourself in PvP.

    • Develop your own tactics in tackling PvE/PvP situations.

    • Different ship/fighter? Different tactics!

Can a rails-on combat system deliver mass PvP? Can it deliver beyond that arcady feel?

To the point of this thread, I really hope they deliver freeform space. But to be completely honest, they shouldn't even copy and paste this Clone Wars Adventures crap "for now" and launch the space component in an expansion ala Jump to Lightspeed.

I will be enjoying this game. As long as it has enough players around to satisfy my desire to be in a Multiplayer world surounded by fans and fellow gamers . I will be happy.

I highly doubt this will be a problem. In fact, a good number of people bitching and moaning about the game will still go out and buy it, like all other big mmo launches. Take STO for example, everyone knew that game was a trash heap at launch and they still sold like a million copies. Anyone who says TOR is going to fail is either a troll or out of touch with reality.

Very few doubt it will be a good *game*, but many have legitimate concerns about how *MMO* will it be (rather than a simple co-op, and still Bioware doesn't even have much co-op experience) and if it is going to be worth a 15€/month subscription.

You need to get out in the real world 15 Euro a month is peanuts for the hours of entertainment you get from these games. The only people who question this are the Jobless or people who really need a reality check with respect to the value these games provide. As far as any of these games go they are never really lack value but may lack longevity. But ona  monthly sub you can always cancel so you really can't loose.

Let me thing , 8 Extended storylines for the charachter classes to be played at discretion, the area Bioware excel in thats your money back for starters after thaanything else is just a  bonus. Again the value eists regardless of any smart spin so you just cannot loose.

As if you can't answer that question lol.  Because people want it.  And because one wouldn't invalidate the other.  The on rails missions would not lose relevance or their own unique appeal due to the existance of open freeform spaceflight.  There's simply many kinds of action combat that can't feasibly be done in an mmo-style movement scheme.

In fact, it seems inevitable to me that sometime down the road they WILL release a space expansion like JTL.  But it's a big project, and so it's no surprise it won't make it into the initial product.  However, asset-wise, they will be able to reuse much of the models and textures of their rails system in an open one, so it will cut down on some development time.

They know people want to own their own ship, that people want to live among the stars, that people want to explore, that people want to be pilots.  It's kind of obvious.

Do you have any proof that they're going to add in open space flying?

Or is your entire argument based on: "Because people want it.", "...it seems inevitable to me" (Emphasis on the "me" in that sentence.), and "It's kind of obvious"?
