Some players may not be aware about the differences between these two games and so it is easy to jump to conclusions.
I will just list some that I've come across either in the recent demo or past interviews and articles. Feel free to include to this list. Bullet format for a short, concise summary.
Guild Wars 2
No skillcapping. In advanced areas, skills are drops from mobs. in early areas, skill trainers.
True 3D environment. Jumping over obstacles, swimming and exploring underwater.
No dedicated healing class but with 3 professions with switchable primary support role.
Self healing direct/non-direct are far more effective than healing other allies.
Downed state (like borderlands)
Access to indoor buildings. Dungeons. Multiple floors and levels.
Dynamic events and mini events occurring in a persistent environment.
No exclamation marks over NPC heads.
Personalized stories based on a series of biography questions. You may join someone else's story in the instance.
Skills based on profession, weapon and race.
Skills will have more usefulness. Less emphasis on skills being useful only when certain conditions are met.
Marketplace (a "smart" auction house)
Environmental Weapons such as turrets, mortars, and water bucket.
Level Cap raised to 80. Nearly flat experience curve.
Difficulty of the Boss and mobs are scaled down to the number of players participating in the event.
Potions (mana only with cooldown)
Personality System
Traits (affects skills)
8 Professions with swappable roles. All 8 with revive skills. No secondary profession.
Skills that interact with skills of other players to form a profession combo
No auto attack
Dodge and roll to evade attacks
Spell casting while moving (most spells)
3 Factions
Structured PvP (e-sport style), everything is equalized.
World vs World PvP, your character joins as it is. Objectives and roles. Large map with territories, keeps, villages, lumbermill, resources, caravans. On-going. Each week different server match ups.
Tournaments
Rankings and statistics
Weapon Personalities
Firearms
Titles and Achievements
Day/Night Cycle and Weather Effects
Player housing. You are able to invite other players to join you in this instance.
Player neighborhood/district that changes with your story.
Extended Guild support. Social Guild Management.
Mini-games in cities offer rewards and equipments for cosmetic purposes only. Compete for scores. Designed to be social places. i.e. shooting gallery.
Stay tuned for more details on PvP when ArenaNet reveals them in the coming months.

They also removed the secondary profession didn't they? or are they keeping that in gw2 as well?
nope, they're using your race instead of secondary profession. They said it became way too difficult to balance everything with a race, and two professions affecting skills
Is it still going to be instanced or is it an actual open world now?
There will be some use of instancing, but it is mostly open persistent world.
I appreciate the thread's intentions btw, but honestly I believe half the people who claim they are uninterested in GW2 because they disliked GW1 are trolling...
Nobody should make such large assumptions - and if you're even the slightest bit interested you should take the time to do some basic research atleast (not that questions aren't welcome on threads like these - the fewer misconceptions the better).
P.S. (None of that was directed at anyone in particular.)
Most of the world and content (dynamic quests) will be 100% open, like your good old MMO. However there'll still be some instancing, like in housing, personal story quests and some end-game dungeons.
Playing: Starcraft II.
Played: Tibia, Ragnarok Online, Ultima Online, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft.
Wanna play: Guild Wars 2, SW:TOR, Final Fantasy XIV, Diablo III.
Some modifications and clarifications should be added;
Potions: only Energy potions no health potions
Open persistent world, not entirely seamless in the main cities.
No secondary professions
Cross-profession combo (professions can combine their skills to get new effects from them)
Non-combat activities (bar fights, shooting gallery, snowball fights)
10 slot skill bar
Weapons dictate your first 5 skills (professions can swap weapons in combat or for elementalists they can swap attunements but not weapons)
This is not a game.
Actually its useless to compare GW1 and GW2 they are completely different games.
I can also see that GW inheritted a lot from other games, like WoW, DAoC (WvWvW) Warhammer (Public quests are a premature for of Public events) ..........and so on.
Its important for both GW lovers, GW haters and neutral players to realise that GW2 is a completely new game, based on the lore and the world we know from GW.

I'm glad to see that GW2 has taken the PQ system from WAR (arguably the only good thing that game brought to the MMO scene) and actually made it work as intended by NOT rewarding any items for participation but instead opted for EXP, gold and karma points. Basically, somewhat less tangible things (when you take into account that there's no grind, etc) so it won't lead to constant repetition of particular PQs so you can get that purple bag and best loot possible.
Nothing about PvP? Seems like, judging by this list, they are going the PvE route.
And self healing more powerful than other healing? This one sounds like the healer role will not only cease as a dedicated class but also marginalised completely. Pity, I liked playing hybrid healers. So what roles are left? DPS, obviously, but any other roles that require some tactical planning, like CC?

They've already mentioned W v W v W and that most of the arenas in GW1 will be making a return and as before PvP is completely seperate from the PvE side of the game.
This is not a game.
Also, seems like it's gonna be worth playing through GW1 if you haven't yet.
It's because pvp is still in the stage that they can't say for certain that something will be in-game since pvp for all intents and purposes will be a totally separate game from PvE with balances being completely different in Structured pvp.
It's probably also more than likely is that gw1 was seen by the majority of people as a pvp game. To help remove that stigma they're probably releasing all the pve information first and pvp information last despite the fact they're probably spending an equal amount of time on each aspect.
From what I gather, healing is just a part of the support role which is featured prominently in GW2 as step forward from typical healers and hybrids.
There will indeed be WvWvW which is an improved version of DAoC's RvR.. Where gear and level actually matter.
But there will also be competitive PvP which is alike the current GW's PvP. characters from all levels can enter and when they enter they get transfered to max level, they get access to all skill and they get to choose from premade armor and weapons... this way only skill counts in this tournament kind of PvP....

I wish people whould stop thinking Guild Wars is a PVP game. Anet themselves said most player are PVE.
I don't care about Guld War 2 PVP. I don't like PVP. I don't plan to take part in it.
Anet needs to be careful they don't make Guild Wars 2 too different or they're risk losing their core customers.
The cool thing about there being no normal world pvp is that it allows Arenanet to do separate balancing for the mists area and for pve areas (the rest of Tyria). Its very possible that certain skills won't work exactly the same in the mists, as they do in Tyria.
With this type of setup, I imagine that balancing shouldn't be as hard as it already is in games like WoW, AoC and other games like them.

If you are curious about this game and haven't done much research, I highly recommend getting your info straight from the source:
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/
Read the dev blogs, watch the videos, visit the forums, etc.
There's some features they won't talk as much about there - but you can find them on other sites. W v W pvp would be a big one.

Watch all the parts of that presentation from gamescon (this last week).
Has there been any info about gear progression as you get higher in level? Is there many different types of armor to obtain and use to get diffferent stats and looks, or is armor just pretty much the same throughout the game?
Who told you that many GW PvE players don't also PvP? GW1 has some of the best PvP gameplay, and a very active PvP community. I've played many hours of GW PvE and PvP, and love them both. Besides, this isn't Aion, GW2 PvP will be completely separate from PvE, so it shouldn't affect you in any way.
We will have to wait on seeing PvP in action. But it has already been mentioned before the features they want to put in PvP, specific details hasn't been finalized yet.
It isn't surprising this time that PvE took the opening stage given that it didn't receive an equal attention as PvP did in GW1. This move reaffirms to the PvE crowd, they aren't forgotten.

Its stated in one of the interviews that most Guild War player are PVE players.
That suprises me that more people dont pvp since the level cap is so low ,But then again there are 3 expansions worth of pve content.
Keep your pants on, people don't think GW or GW2 is specifically a pvp game, they think it's got good pvp systems in it and like it or not it attracts pvpers for that reason. The vast amount of the content of the actual game will no doubt be pve orientated.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
It is odd, given that the system is set into place to make is as accessible as possible. Methinks one too many pvers either buy into the general myth that all pvpers are scumbags, or they actually don't want their characters to get killed for some odd reason /shrug.
Sad really i'm sure if more people took part in pvp they would actually enjoy it.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Most peopel just play way more PvE then PvP
