I read the first few reviews on the main section of WoW and I was outraged. Isn't it a bit obvious that these people are straight from the EQ payroll.
Look at these quotes:

They should rename it to everygame, because its the same as all the rest. Also why not make the avatars invisible, after all your armor counts for well over half your stats. Just another gutless game, risk nothing get everything in return. No working economy, No housing, no content. Its a shame they dont have goose egg as a rating, thats what it deserves. After 3 months you cant bring yourself to log on, it starts to fell like a job. If your looking for long term fum look elsewhere.

Can this be ANY MORE obvious. Clearly WoW is far superior to any MMORPG out there...ever. I find it extrememly fun to play--whether I'm grinding with buddies, questing, or auctioning goods at the auction house (a fantastic in-game ebay). I don't know what evercrack these guys are smoking, but what could he mean by, "...kinda fun, until you get to the max level (which doesn't take long)." Are you high. How long do you guys play a day--10 hours? Maybe THEN it would still take months to get to level cap. But the majority of people I've talked to on forums are 18-30, and we have full-time jobs. I've been playing for almost a month, and I'm only at lvl 20. And it's starting to take a lot longer to lvl up now...
These people must have been payed to say these things. I would like them to explain to me which mmorpg IS worth buying; since WoW is so UN-fun, I wonder which game they DO play.
Don't be swayed by these ludicrous statements--WoW is fantastic, and that is why it's
#1.

Hello fanboy!
Unfortunitly I have to agree with the reviewers except for one point. You actually control your character using keyboards instead of point and click.
Otherwise, the game is probably just one out of millions of those pointless mmos that feature a leveling treadmill and a dice rolling combat system.

Give me lights give me action. With a touch of a button!
I seriously doubt WOW is the best MMORPG ever. I haven't played it so I'll reserve judgement until they (inevitably) offer a free trial. Until then? WoW won't be getting my money. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to give it a whirl but... as I said... no free trial? No chance of me buying it. I'll stick with the demon I know before I sink more money into the devil I don't.
I *NEVER* buy a MMO without a free trial. And no, Beta doesn't cut it. I learned that lesson after AO and Horizons. Too many developers change entirely too many things between beta and release for me to trust my impressions in a Beta to what actually will be in the game.
So I will wait patiently for a free trial and continue playing what I personally feel is the best MMO on the market right now:
Star Wars Galaxies
Housing
Roleplay
All roles have a purpose, no skill set is pointless
Full scale PVP supported, Partial PVP supported, No PVP supported... all on the same server! I don't have to go to a "PVP" server to get PVP or a "NON PVP" server to avoid it.
Player Controlled Economy
Mounts
Vehicles
Space Combat
Space Combat PVP
Best Crafting System in the industry
And, of course, it's Star Wars
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

If WoW is the first MMORPG a person has played, to them it would probably seem like the greatest thing since sliced bread. But to people who have been playing in the genre for a while WoW is pretty bland.
The game is just another pointless leveling exercise. It has no depth. The only originality it might lay claim to is in the deliberately cartoonish graphics. Which do look good unless you're one of those people who don't like the cartoonish look.
I would venture to say that most people who have played a MMORPG or two before WoW are hoping for something more. I guess WoW is ok....for what it is, but there's no depth to it. There's nothing new there. WoW isn't really a virtual world it's just another linear walk through a series of monster bashing areas. It's not really a game to capture peoples hearts and souls as much as it is just a treadmill to run on for a while untill something better comes along.
WoW is a very fast paced game in the terms of leveling which, depending on your play style is either good or bad. I dont mind it, but then it has its dark tones to it too. I played the game for the first two months after its release, reached level 28-32, cant remember, and was getting a little bored with it.
I have to say that the game is polished, I love the graphics because they hold close to the WarCraft RTS graphics. Once the game incorperates a few objects such as Hero levels, Guild halls and player housing I think i'll go back as it was a fun game to play, I just got bored.
"Dont make me bitch slap you through the force!"
It is not my first MMORPG. And not only have I been gaming since Pong, I am a CG Illustrator, Level Designer, and obvious gamer...my opinions on the subject hold water. I've done lots of research, and have played many MMOs.
I am new to WoW, and I think everything from the graphics, to the mechanics are silky smooth. I have a lower end system, and it runs great when I turn down the view distance. Also, I play in a high population server, and rarely EVER have to wait to play--and the lag is actully not a problem at all.

these kind of reviews are universal. people can't stand having another game out there that people like more than the one they play. and its not just WoW thats getting flamed, go look at some EQ2 reviews, many are just as bad. such as my favorite:

This game sucks big time...
Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II
XBL Gamertag - Eagle15GT
The Atari 2600 was still going strong in the early 80's and Pong and Tank were still around also. PvP was pretty hardcore back then the carebears played Defender and Missile Command.
"Combat" on the 2600 was the greatest game ever!!! Now that was some great PvP!

Personally I give little credit to reviews posted on message boards, because most of them are little fanboys who want to do nothing more than flame their compitition. The only reviews I pay any hedence to are gameing sites and mags, which I actually read through, not just check out the score, and more than anything, my friends who play the same games.
And thats why im picking this game up tommorrow for my birthday, cause my buddies, who have played through both EQ, FFXI, DAoC, and EQ2 have said this is by far their favorite, and that it outperforms the others 2 to 1. And I trust them, because they arnt fanboys, hell most of them havnt even played warcraft, but they know their MMORPG's, since they have reached max levels in all but EQ.
Well there you go.
However you feel about the game Kendall, I would suggest staying away from the actual reviews for ANY game on this site. Most of the people that review haven't even played the game their reviewing. Look at any game and you'll see stuff like "This game is the worst ever!!!!" and they give no reasons for why they personally dislike it. If you lik a game that should be enough. Who cares what other people say?
Malomeister what are you like 10?
I agree with the OP. I have yet to play any other mmorpg which is just this FUN. straight out fun, what else do you need in a game?
best mmorpg ever(at this point in time)
regardless of its originality(c'mon its a fantasy game) or whatever, i enjoy me some WoW.
This is a fun game period. I dont care what the EQ fanboys say. However i do understand why people dont like it. This game got a lot of hype. People bought this game expecting it to be godly and make other mmorpags look bad. This game is not godly. Also I dont think it deserves to be on top. Its fun, but only in smll doses. if you play to much you get bored. The quests do get repetitive but you can mix it up with things like working on gathering and trade skills. This keeps it from getting to repetitive. The other thing you could do is pursue other races and classes if you get bored with one. They all play differently and can offer a different playing style.
In conclusion: Good but not godly. Take in small doses and wash down with different games.
the game is kinda demi-godly...and yes, all these people that say wow is so easy are the crazy powerlvlers grinding....if you grind, a game can only be so fun, ya know?
people hate on WoW cuz of blizzard, some of my irl friends are like, "wow is gay" but they have yet to play it(i'm still spreading the good word, like Peter said); its the sense of liking something so many people like- we call those people "haters"
game recognizes game, and this is a fun title.
i also am i lifelong gamer....first game, pong....2nd game, pacman....everyone had the original atari and 2600 came out in mid 80's
I think that simply because of it being a Blizzard title, World of Warcraft will hold on to the top spot as being one of the most popular mmo's for the next few years.
I don't feel that the game has done anything new to change the direction of other games the way previous Blizzard titles have, and I don't feel it's much different than any of the other mmo's out there right now.
That being said, if your going to pay a montly fee for an mmo you might as well pick this one. It's polished and balanced very well, and definately deserves to be one of the top ranked games on mmorpg.com.
However it isn't as different from other level grinding games as I thought it would be, and I think a game like Guild Wars will have a much bigger impact on future mmo's than this game will. Only time will tell.
I tend to agree with most here, WoW is one heck of a game. Maybe that is why it is so succesful?
I agree that it didn't push the genre forward in terms of ... revolutionary features or what not, BUT i disagree at the same time, cause even if it didn't push the genre forward by a tech point of view, it did... by a social point of view.
WoW is the big one for the Western market, no doubt in it. It finally made the formula, that was always ALMOST right, really right. It is fun, it is good and it is a game.
Of course it can't appease everybody, especially who is seeking excusivly for Virtual worlds simulations. Wow ain't one. check out EVE, UO or SWG for those.
To me it feel exactly right. i played most that came out recently, i liked most of them... for a while. but i never had the constance to get to the really high levels in any of them.... know why?
Cause it seemed it was a Industry standard in MMorpgs that the low levels were the bad part of the game. You HAD to be high level to see the cool stuff and to really have fun, the low levels were kinda of the elimination zone. If you are not hardcore enough to keep up with this crap, then you don't deserve to see the rest. I didn't really wanted to invest months of my life on things i didn't enjoyed, just to arrive at some sort of gaming paradise.. that might or might not be good. Sorry, i can do that for my work or for my family, but from a GAME i expect entertainment, not a new grinding work.
In WoW the journey is entertaining. from level 1 up. THAT is what made it different, without speaking of classess, skills, spells, whatever.
So keep it up Blizzard and.... FIX THE DAMN SERVERS!!1111!!! ))

Yeah volkmar has got the idea pretty much.
I play WoW currently, but I've also played the majority of MMOs out there. I don't know if I could definitively say that WoW is the "best" MMO, because what's best for you is gonna be different from what's best for me or some other people.
That being said, I have to say that in my opinion (and keep in mind I've been following MMOs closely since the genre first came about), WoW is the most correct in what an MMO is supposed to be. It has the polish and the attention to detail that all MMOs should. Things like mist breath when your character is in a cold area, or that the clocks ingame (rare though they are) actually tell the right time. The church bells that ring when the hour turns in the city of Stormwind, the little bugs and flies that serve no purpose other than to flesh out the environment, the kids playing in the streets and going about their daily lives in some areas. WoW is just so well fleshed out because that's the standard that Blizzard holds themselves to. When compared to similar MMOs, it can sometimes feel like you're comparing a bit fat pie to some pita bread with orange peel inside. They've just gone to such lengths to immerse you into their world, which is one of the things I think is most important about an MMO. Like volkmar said, from the moment you step into the world, you're seeing all this cool stuff that really inspires awe to some extent. The whole world is rich throughout the whole adventuring process, which makes you really take a step back and say 'whoa, they really put some care into this game'.
Does it lack some things? Of course it does, all MMOs do, simply because of the scope they have to try to encompass. What does WoW lack? (my opinions) Lateral content in the latter 1/3 of the game; pretty much from 40+ you're going through the same motions as everyone else, and there's really not alot of freedom to go explore and do what you want anymore. It's really easy to burn yourself out on the content. There's not alot of variety in peoples characters at later levels. I could probably go on, but I'm sure other people will be more than happy to bash WoW for me, lol.
WoW, in my opinion, is the next step up from all the other MMOs currently out there, and should be held as the next level standard for future games. However, because it is a Blizzard game, it will be held up as the thing to compare everything else to, simply because Blizzard is known for putting the time and effort into their games to make them the sorta 'gold standard', and it's evident they did the same with WoW. That's why the game was the fastest selling game of all time (hard fact), and there's now over 1.5 million subscribers (to put that into perspective, that's more than the combined amount of EQ1 + EQ2 at their peaks to date). There will always be people that say they hate blizzard games for this reason or that, so you kinda have to sift through the BS alot of the time, and go by what people say that actually makes sense to you.
That's what this sorta comes down to, you have to go to the sources that you know make sense to you. What do I mean? Well for example, if I'm looking for reviews on a game, I don't go to IGN or Gamespy or watch X-play, because I think they all suck at reviewing games and don't give reviews that are good for me. I trust Penny Arcade, and Victor Lucas + Tommy Tallarico from EP/RotR, because I know when they say a game is good, I will find the game good too.
So what can one get from all my ramblings? Well, if you're serious about MMOs, I think you owe it to yourself to play WoW, simply because you should know it and can compare it to other games for yourself. It's the big dog in the market right now, and if you ignore it you're pretty much just limiting yourself. Play it, borrow someone's 2 week free trial (came with the collectors edition box), borrow a friend's account, whatever. Just play it so you can know it for yourself, whether you like it or not, because the majority of the community is playing it for themselves, and it'll be used as a common point of reference for a great number of things, past, present, and future.

Blurr,
I agree with you completely and 100%. WoW has somethings that other MMOs just don't have flat out. And it has other things that other games do have but maybe polishes them up, adds a new touch, and tries to makes them better. The game also has things the other games do have and doesn't do it justice compared to the other games that has that said feature.
The game has potential to be the greatest game out there in this genre once Blizzard warms up to the genre a little bit. This game is great as is, and it blows my mind that one company that has never had an MMO could do it correctly this well on their first try.
Looking at it now, I cannot wait to see what Blizzard will do next. The game, in my humblest opinion, isn't the best now and maybe won't be the best for some time, but if Blizzard can work with it and mold it, WoW has potential.
As Blurr said, "WoW, in my opinion, is the next step up from all the other MMOs currently out there, and should be held as the next level standard for future games." This game is the future and other games will feed off of the energy this game provides to the over all gaming community and everyone will work to be better. I can only see good things coming to the MMORPG genre.
Buddy I have played EQ 2, CoH, AC, AC2, and PSO before I played WoW, and WoW is the best MMORPG I have ever played. It isnt bland because you always have something to do. I find I always have to work up to a new item, even though my guy is lvl 59.
Things will be added, you people just have to be patient. A lot of games didnt come out with half the stuff they have now.
WoW is a very good MMORPG. Is it the best? No, definately not. But I do think it is the best for the casual player, and thats what most people are. That is why it is so succesfull, because it is very simple to understand and you can reach the level limit in a lrelatively small amount of time.
However, my account only has 1 week left, and I will not be renewing, not even for when Battlegrounds comes out. Simply because it has no long lasting appeal. I am searching for a MMORPG that will last me years of enjoyment, but WoW is not that game. It is a very good game for about 3 months, but then you realize there is not much to keep you playing. I doubt I will even play my character in the week I have left because there is nothing to work towards that interests me.
The best MMORPG would have houses, PvP areas, mass Guild/raid battles, towers/castles/areas which can be claimed, a great economy, and probably some other details I am missing out on. But WoW lacks too much to keep the hardcore gamer (and the gamer who just wants the most for their money like myself) subscribing and enjoying themselves.
