This is the first mmorpg I've ever played where I've thought, "Hmm, this thing could get as huge as WoW."
Polish seems superb and it's still in Beta. The graphics, music and networking (dealing with lag and whatnot) are all top notch, really beyond top notch. I've never seen anything this polished in Beta, and I've never seen an MMORPG that looks and feels as nice as this one does period.
Top all of that off with the fact that you can play it on a ps3 and I can totally see this thing overcoming WoW.

i really dont think so but i do like the game and hope for the best
There is no chance in hell that going to happen and I like the game.
I'm just being realistic... this ain't going to happen.
graphics and sound come second to gameplay.
I'll judge that when i get my hands on it
The thing is, WoW has been around for what? 6 years by now? FFXIV just started its open beta.. You really cannot compare one to another
we can all dream and hope can't we lol
Time to stop dreaming.
After playing for an hour, and how wow works, this game won't even break 1 million.
The Japanese based UI, control scheme, and more difficulty in general will make this never happen. I am a huge fan though. It is just that the masses need everything to be as easy as possible with clear direction on how to get from point A to point B. They need it to be able to run on 9 year old computers, and be playable with 1 finger.
I do think it will do really great on console though. Right now is the perfect time for an MMO on the console market with how many consoles are online. I think it will really shine in that aspect.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Ironic since I'm seeing nothing but complaints on horrible mouse/keyboard support, no in-game configuration settings and the inability to alt tab. I think the masses prefer a game that isn't half baked.
Please don't make threads like these we don't need more useless rantings..
This is the first mmorpg I've ever played where i wanted to log off after an hour. I personally enjoyed XI more and i don't think enough has changed to warrant a new monthly fee.
tbh, would it matter at all?
As long as the game has enough subscribers they can continue to work on it theres nothing more that it would need.
I`d rather not have the bulk of the wow community come over, too many rotten apples in it.
totally agree with you there.
For the past 2 years i've been looking for a mmo where i can get that same 'adventure-feeling' as when i first started playing mmorpg. I don't really care wether the game has 100k subscribers or 1M.. but for the sake of it, i'd rather not.
I for one hope the game doesn't. If the game ended up beating WoW then they would jsut strt dumbing everything down to a point where its a game of follow the arrow with little to no actual skill involved. Just a matter of standing in the right place at the right time and following the arrow around on the minimap.
I'm holding out my opinion on the game so far. Need more then 7 hours of play time to judge the game and decide if its something I will stick with or not. So far though it has the graphics nailed down and the gameplay is deep enough with what appears to be a solid story line to the game.
The only big issue is the interface / mouse keyboard support. Though I use a gamepad to play (since I have played all FF games and FF 11 with a gamepad) its just more natural (to me) to play the game that way.
Really? Did you play the same game I did?
While I agree the graphics and animations especially look very nice, the cut scenes which I encountered so far were awesome and I also did not have any lag issues, there are quite a few drawbacks. The game feels like a horrid console port from the start. There is not even a config menu ingame, for me the game won't even start in full screen mode (just blank screen, then nothing), the controls are really aweful, can not be customized for the most part, keyboard and mouse are not even remotely utilized for the interface, everything is basically made to be accessed via menus (well how else would you do it if you only have a gamepad to use..) but for a PC MMO this is ridiculous. And I don't see these issues getting adressed before launch.
So in general, I do like the look & feel of the game and Final Fantasy in general (played and liked some of the earlier single player games) I am most definitely not going to buy this game.
No, it won't.
Well, FF and FF Online will never be "fast paced action mmorpg" don't come into FF if you just want smashing buttons mindlessly being in a party, the pace of combat is ment and build that way for strategy purposes, but i find it faster than it already was in the last beta, which i think we weren't needed it that "fast" it will make coordination between party member harder.
Anyway it's speed VS quality, and the game is all about quality, animations, textures, sounds, design in general, they can manage to really make worlds of their own that feels alive and unique, not like 90 % of korean grinders that just feels soulless and pointless without proper story to me.
It will never be as popular as wow, because it ain't going to call to the masses, i wish it could get millions of players of course, but that kind of "old style and quality" nowadays just slip between the fingers of actual nerdraging players who only sees if it's fast or not without even having a second thought about "why" is it designed like this, or that, with real intencives and purposes behind it ( party gameplay mechanics improved over coordination of skills / chain skills that "obligates" players to actually play and "think" at what they have done, what they are doing, and what they will do next thinking to actually "manage" all the mp/ hp / Attack of the whole party to get fights against boss viable.)
The game to me is top notch quality from what square can deliver and has an old FF style feeling approaching to the feeling i had while playing FF IX and older FF, a good old shool medieval feeling.
I wish players could actually see what has been done there, but i highly doubt it.
Not if it plays best with an Xbox remote.
Lol.
Square will probably secure the 500k fan-subs from FF XI. But in an ever-growing market, soon to be topped by Cataclysm, and probably much expanded by TOR, not even counting other major AAA titles due to release within a year, those 500k for Square will translate in an ever-dropping market share.
"Time to stop dreaming", indeed, with its crappy interface and many old-school (pre-2000) software limitations, FF XIV cannot appeal to more than a million players. No way. Even if the press rates it well, discounting a lot of software ergonomy aspects that aren't really them to judge--they often don't, anyway--the majority of users will just be baffled by the hardships they have to go through before even playing the game.
I was a huge fan of FFXI, but this thing plays like a bad PS2 Emulator game. The keyboard/mouse controls are horrid and a gamebreaker for me.
Joined 2004 - I can't believe I've been a MMORPG.com member for 20 years! Get off my lawn!
so far i like the game , cut scene are well done, graphic are nice, art style are right, music is awesome
BUT THE UI IS HORRRIBLE, and the MAP and the MOUSE LAG is just a pain in the ass
i actually enjoy the combat system, and the fishing/harvesting system as well(surprisingly good)
this game will not be as big as SWTOR or WOW , never due to its PS3 limitation
Your post reminds me of that South Park episode where the kids wrote a stupid book and the adults read too much into it and saw things that were really not there. I'm probably too old to be watching that but i think my point comes across. I think you over generalize about the entire speed vs. quality because most of us have no issue with speed at all. It's the horrible clunky mechanics and the lack of freedom of movement that has not been improved on at all from FFXI that we dislike.
Let's not even get into your so called "thinking mans" party dynamic that once again i feel is limited by the terrible animation locks and skill locks that prevent any sort of reactionary movements. Managing HP/MP and hate is something former FFXi players are really good at and i don't even consider that "thinking" as it comes second nature to us. Don't sell other games short, as i'm sure there are a lot like myself that never played WoW, that understand group mechanics down to a science from other MMOs.
I can see exactly what they've done and i'm still disappointed. I think the PS3 is holding this game back from it's true potential.
Every MMO that comes out people say, "Now THIS is the game that will dethrone WoW." WoW is an anomaly. The next Blizzard game might beat WoW.
While I agree that dumbing down would be a bad thing, I think Square-Enix is one of the few companies that has the balls to do things the way they think they should be done. The insistance on grouping for ffxi is testament to that, despite the rabid backlash by most mmorpg players. In a way, the unusual controls is also a testament to that.
As for the mouse/keyboard thing, it's bound to be an issue just like it was for ffxi. I for one will probably be getting a gamepad to play it with, but I think people are jumping the gun by panning the layout. Just because it's not the generic layout from WoW and the WoW clones doesn't mean it's necessarily bad. I would fool around with keymapping and macros and giving it some solid time before declaring it a gamebreaker.
In Re: to the post above me, while that may be true, this is the first one that actually feels like it has the ability to pull it off. Also, in Re: to others, there's no doubt Star Wars will probably kill both these games, but that's still a long ways off. I think ffxiv has a good solid year of being number one or a really close number 2 to WoW.
After countless crashes i finaly created char.
Guess what error error
then crash crash
now cant even login
dunno if we played same game. And amout of crashes just 3 weeks from retail is just too much. Beta at this stage should have only random crash per serveral playing sesion. They should push release date later. OR game will die after month. Guess doesnt metter will get costs and profit from box sales anyway.
