Keyboard + Mouse Controls

elihupelihup Member Posts: 102

I wasnt in any of the previous betas, but keyboard + mouse movement is exactly like any other mmo in open beta!

I assume this is a recent change, as it seems completely normal to me.

Still seems to be a bit of input lag when using keyboard/mouse, but a little better.

Hmm, this seems a bit contradictory to all the other feedback we're getting.

To understand correctly, you are saying that there are no issues with kb and mouse, that they are exactly as other mmo's?

  • elihupelihup Member Posts: 102

Wasd to move, hold right mouse button to change camera angle.  That is what I think of as normal.

I played for a few hours this morning.  Using the mouse to control the camera works fine, but using it for anything else is terrible.  It is slow and crappy.  I've just been using the keyboard for everything.  I'll probably pick up a controller eventually.

It's the lag on input from the Keyboard+Mouse (mosly just the mouse tho) most people have issues with, not the control scheme

Its because they use a Software Mouse ( So it ties in with your FPS, if you lag your mouse lags) instead of a hardware mouse, which they stated in an interview that they are looking to change it.

What little time I got to play do to the login error the mouse / keyboard are pretty bad. There is no mouse movement at all and you can't remap the keyboard your stuck with what you got. The mouse acceleration feels like it's moveing through quicksand. Today there is a patch but it's stuck on 47.3% like many others trying to patch according to the forums.  Not a very good impression so far but lets see how it goes.

  • mochipixelsmochipixels Member UncommonPosts: 144

Agreed.  We need a hardware mouse option.  They patched that into FFXI later in the game's lifetime and mouse interfacing improved, but I still stuck with a controller.

If you can dig out an old pc dual analogue controller or have a xbox controller with wireless pc dongle;  they work great!  It seems that the game controls much better with the console type control scheme.

I find the UI itself to be pretty responsive-especially when compared to closed beta.  I just wish I didn't have to push my mouse uphill in a snowstorm to access the UI.

Holy frack with the illinformed BS being passed around, yes you can remap your keyboard.  It was added with Open Beta...and as far as mouse movement goes its still a software mouse, but again just like with FFXI and every FF before, FFXIV is a heavy menu driven game thus the Keyboard and Controller are your primary input devices and the mouse shouldn't be used for more than the camera...really!

Instead of calling BS please tell me how to do this? I browse the FFcore site and have been told you can't remap the keys.  What little time I got to play was fighting the UI / Mouse trying to get things to work. The first issue I had was I was in windows mode and had no idea I had to logout and and run a config file to setup my video. sigh  Ever since then I have not been able to get to the character screen due to the 13001 error.

But its on a pc with around 10X as many different controls, so i shouldnt have to hit HOME then move my mouse to inventory, click and it pops up, I should be able to just hit I or B or whatever i feel like hitting for that window to open up. Limitation for the sake of limitation is ridiculous.

In-game configuration menu has Keyboard remapping options, which include {if I'm not mistaken} being able to set keys to open your Inv and whatnot.

And for the record FFXIVCore may be able to get translated material out quickly, but they are far from accurate in their info, and shouldn't be trusted as the one and only source.  There are many much better sites to visit for info, of which I have links on our LS forums to most of them...

Plus I'm working on FFXIV Guides currently, that which I have several posted already, but I've yet to get the in-game config complete due to worlds down for maintence atm!

Have you even tried to remap anything? or just assuming you can? Anyway if you can remap your settings I can't find it. I have been to config / keyboard and can't find any way to remap. I have yet to see anyone claim they can on any forum I browse except for you. I hope it's something like the character creation where it seemed you couldn't rotate your character around until I found out the LJK or something like that controls the camera.

I've tried the keyboard+mouse and its actually pretty smooth on my computer.

I did switch to my sixaxis just cuz its so much easier to control with.

  • elihupelihup Member Posts: 102

I did run into a little bit of mouse lag when I turned the graphics up, but it seemed that keeping them a little bit below what my system could handle kept the mouse very functional.  It would be better to have the option of a hardware mouse.

The thing I found most annoying so far was server lag.  Took a few seconds to get a response from npc etc.

It did not really felt to smooth to me. While it is not a barrier or really hard to play with the keyboard/mouse it is clear however that using a gamepad would be better.

the mapping is tricky right now... i had to click it.. then backspace to erase mapping.. then map new and make sure its not mapped somewhere else or it will just stay blank...

and for the keyboard-mouse control vs controller...... i always used controller in ffxi but do prefer the WOW style driving control...

i tried both in FFXIV and controller felt same as FFXI... decent

then i set it up WOW style and it works much better for me...much better camera control with mouse and cant beat point and click....also the interface is much more mouse click friendly... you can do things you cant do with controller.. but as others have said you must keep your framerate up for the software mouse to be fast...

so untill they add a hardware mouse here are my tips for improving FPS without losing the beautiful visuals..

    turn off:

shadows (overrated) this control is in the game not in config app

ambient occlusion (this is a cool feature but its not working properly right now anyway)

    anti- aliasing (if you must)

I was reading this from some random link to this site (I could care less).

I got so frustrated that no one knew this that I registered to post this.

You can map in the game in the menu option.

BUT, the keys that are already mapped need to be unmapped first to be used.

    Anyway.

For the topic at hand. Yes the controls with mouse and keyboard are terrible, this is something which will kill the game from the get go I believe. It's super laggy and clunky because they used console controls and the mouse is not hardware mapped. A hardware mapped mouse is independent from lag, every game has a hardware mapped mouse, except FFXIV apparently. Newbee mistake that will cost them dearly.

Thanks for the info. I have found many things in this game to be quite tricky for lack of another word.

Well that would explain why I had no success with remapping. Is it just me or does the UI and contorls remind you of something out of the 90's?

Anti-Aliasing is a waste if yyer running at a high resolution (1080i)

    Just my opinion.

I am running at 5780 x 1080 (or whatever it is, three monitors). high on everything (not very high on texture filtering), standard shadows (higher than that is not much better). AO is awesome, works great for indoor settings but its very expensive to activate.

It runs pretty well for me.

Mouselag right now is still just completely ridiculous. Not tried a gamepad yet. Have to agree on the interface too, its not userfriendly at all. The game definitely feels like it was designed with a gamepad in mind first from what I can see.

i played FFXI for years with keyboard+mouse so i was used to it

but when i played FFXIV only few minutes i noticed it's just not fun so i already ordered a gamepad(for other reasons too)

Morning Khrymson, where are you posting guides? Checked MMORPG profile but didn't see them. I would be interested in reading them.

    Thank you,

The fact that you cant use left+right mouse keys to move is not normal.
