Well it may not reach WoW subscriber levels but it may take in quite a lot....
WoW at least recognizes my region(Southeast Asia) while SE lumps us with China who is notorious for its gold farmers, this alienates Asian players who are not gold farmers but are real subscriber.
if you check the region selection screen of SE they placed there countries where there would not even be a single subscriber but countries from Asia where they could get at least a few thousand real subscribers.....
This is the first mmorpg I've ever played where I've thought, "Hmm, this thing could get as huge as WoW."
Polish seems superb and it's still in Beta. The graphics, music and networking (dealing with lag and whatnot) are all top notch, really beyond top notch. I've never seen anything this polished in Beta, and I've never seen an MMORPG that looks and feels as nice as this one does period.
Top all of that off with the fact that you can play it on a ps3 and I can totally see this thing overcoming WoW.
Square will be lucky enough that even surpassess sales over FFXI, it will never touch the numbers WOW brings, it's just a fact, unless Blizzard closes shop, that's the only way FFXIV will surpass it.
As for beta play, it's really not in that great of shape for launching which is in a few weeks.
I think Square should hold off and release the game Q1 or Q2 next year with PS3 launch in the same window, they need to do some serious tweak and polish and just release it when ready.
The Gameplay/ Mechanics are really off at this part of the games upcoming launch window, I'm more concered about that then anything else.
I do hope there launch is success, but I have a feeling it will not =(

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.
WoW at least recognizes my region(Southeast Asia) while SE lumps us with China who is notorious for its gold farmers, this alienates Asian players who are not gold farmers but are real subscriber.
The goal of CGF is to not be on servers only in china. That wouldnt make much sense if all the cgf were on the same server. They infest every server.

Yep, so SE excluding 50% of Asia would not really deter the gold farmers from China but in effect would prevent those that are living in the countries excluded by SE who really want to play FFXIV from playing it. From my experience I was able to register and play the following MMO's: World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Trek Online, Age of Conan, Dungeons and Dragons online;
But with FFXIV I may not be able to since I can't register due to the fact that my country is excluded, so FFXIV MAY NOT be able to give WoW a run for it's money, but that is just my opinion
As much as I'd like to see XIV do well, I wouldn't expect it to come even close to WoW numbers. FFXIV will prolly get a nice bump next spring when it releases to the PS3, but even so can't see it having the mass appeal of WoW. Just being realistic, ya know?
IMLTHO, game quality has significantly less to do with WoW's success than it being Made By Blizzard. That being the case, Final Fantasy XIV has a far better chance of getting a following than many competitors simply because it has the Square-Enix brand behind it.
If FF XI is of any indication, they're not shooting for Blizzard casual friendly (most people quit that game before they hit level 10) but rather for the retention of a more sophisticated MMORPG (which is why 11/18 of the classes are related to crafting in a pretty much completely player-driven economy).
"WoW fanboys need not apply," is what I get out of that. FFXI operated quite comfortably on a few hundred thousand subscribers for years, and FFXIV will likely continue that trend.

Square-Enix isn't exactly known for rushing Final Fantasy games to market. I'd be surprised if they would release the game before they think it's ready. Considering they're so quick to say it'll be out this month, I wager they're pretty confident they're just one open beta test away from release.
If the user interface is anything like FFXI then I doubt FFXIV will even have as many subscriptions at its peak as Aion does on a worldwide basis. Console controls are a fine way to control a game... if you are on a console, but it is simply a limiting factor on a pc. There is no need for the limitation and no point trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. If you are on a particular platform then support the controls for that platform or dont bother. At least as an option. I don't want to use a gamepad. I want to use my G13 gameboard. MMOs are why I bought it.
Aion is now widely regarded to have failed in the west largely do to capacity problems at launch and being too "grindy" for a western audience. I haven't heard about FFXIV being grindy but if the rumors about forced grouping is true that could be just as bad or possibly worse. And if the last 24hrs is any indication of how well SE does with capacity, well, game over. SE needs to do better. The MMO world is not very forgiving.
And does anyone know yet what forms of payment they will be accepting? FFXI was and still is extraordinarily limited in that regard.
But I am still waiting to see things for myself. I am impressed with the graphic detail I have seen so far. The mechanics of the job system are very innovative and the storyline and lore appears to be top notch. This game has a lot of potential.
It won't be a threat to WoW, its way to performance hungry, and many players of WoW don't have the PC to start FFXIV, and i guess almost noone will buy a new PC for FFXIV
This is probably the best argument I've heard so far against my thesis. You can practically run WoW on a cellphone. I have a brand new computer, but from what I've heard, ffxiv is pretty scalable, however.
1.5 million subs after ps3 launch sounds pretty right to me, and onward and upward from there.
I'm telling you guys I am right! If nothing else, this is the first mmorpg I've played since LOTRO that feels it has a very high degree of polish and care put into it. I've just played so many mmorpgs that were clearly shooting for box sales and trying to piggyback WoW's success that playing FFXIV is very refreshing. Hell, it's probably the first game I've played since WoW started that feels like a real and unique world. WoW came out a very long time ago, so that's saying a lot about how bad most MMORPGs have been since.
For a guy that really enjoys an immersive world, this game is a gaming Godsend!

SE's idea of ready and the current MMO gamers idea of ready are 2 entirely different things. I have no doubts that the game should wait 6 months and ship with actual content other than leveling and a few guildleves. I'm sure they see the box sales figure potential now, as apposed to in 6 months when 3 other MMO's are set for release, as a solid reason.
I'm sorry this thread lacks crediblity till Hokane comes on and declares it the New Wow Killer!!!!
But seriously I hope the game does well but jsut being on both the PC and PS3 doesn't garauntee anything,it does expand th epotnetial audience but there's no garauntee on how much of that audience it will actualyl capture and hold on too.If that weren't the case FF XI should have 3 times the number of subs as WoW because it was on PC,Xbox and PS2,maybe more because I've bne reliably told for 15 years or more that PC gaming is dead.
I think it will do better on PS3 thna PC though if reports of the clumsy UI and laggy mosue controls are true...msot PC users aren't gonna put up with bad controls jsut because it looks pretty. It don't amtter how nice the graphics are and hoe good the core mechanics may be if the UI and controls get in the way and suck the fun out of everything. But until/if I try FFXiV for myself I can't say anything for sure just rely on what we are being told.
I will agree with you that it appears to have a high degree of polish in terms of the programming. Not so sure anymore about infrastructure and execution but it looks second to none in the game itself.
I also cant really guess how big it will get in console terms. Consoles are a whole different world and the control scheme certainly appears to support that world. But in PC sales and subs, I think they are shooting themselves in the foot with the interface. Not because nobody will use it, there is no shortage of FF fans that are used to it and even prefer it even when playing from a PC. But rather because it doesn't lend itself well to expanding their playerbase. FF fans are a lock but it is those who are looking for something new that will likely be put off by the interface.
Because plugging an Xbox or Logitech or even using the third party drivers for PS3 controllers is a HUGE investment to someone who thinks they might enjoy this game... Silly rabbit.
I love snails. I love every kinda snail. I just want to hug them all, but I cant. Cant hug every snail.
A bit optimistic calling this a "WoW killer", I'd say Star Wars when it releases has enough legitimacy in all areas that matter to earn it that title. I think FF14 will be big and will port some of the ppl from WoW to this game. Depending on what they do however and how they maintain things as it goes on is the other question.
Don't know if this has been said, but I am playing in OB and I think it can't compete with wow because:
1. It has very little quests.
2. Combat is not as actiony as wow.
3. It has higher system requirements.
4. Quest givers are a bit harder to find.
These are just the things that come to me immediately.
Probably the best set of bullet points that describe why many WoW players won't play FF XIV. You could add the control scheme as a negative as well. The system reqs automatically negate many potential buyers as well.
The more I see these games release with higher end requirements the more I am lead to believe that many developers have no idea who their target audience is.
There are two groups you can negate immediately; Fanboys and Haters. Fanboys will play the game no matter what, and will do whatever it takes to play...it's probably better to call them Zealots. Haters won't play the game no matter what, the game could promise that some hot chick will come and perform sexual acts in real life, and the haters still won't play.
However, the audience you have to aim for is the potential buyers. If the system reqs are ridiculously high for a mmorpg, then you will automatically cut your potential profits by a great amount. Many mmorpg gamers don't have high end rigs, hell most people don't really want to or can invest in a high end gaming rig. Especially with this economy. Yes, there has to come a point where minimum reqs have to increase, based on the level of average technology. However, when the minimum reqs are higher than what might be considered average, you're losing money.

I am/was a huge Square Enix fan and i don't think much of Wow at all,but i still do not think FFXIV will be that big ever.
The biggest reason is because when Wow came out there was a huge influx of new rpgr's about 10-15+ million, right now there is maybe a few million game hoppers thta keep jumping to the next new game.
One other huge factor is the lack of PVP for players to brag/epeen/showoff in,so that will keep a large portion away.Square still leads ever so slightly at team work, many still just want to solo a MMO[god knows why]but it is their option, they jus twon't find FFXIV the best place to do it,so again it will help keep numbers lower.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Please provide credible information - not speculation.
The most credible evidence to this is the fact that WoW still maintains a subscription base of around 11 million players. Like many others have said, WoW can run on just about anything. Do you think it's mere coincidence that the most populated Western MMO (by a wide margin) just so happens to have extremely low system reqs?
I doubt most WoW players are even invited: their ancient computers couldn't run this thing. The recommended system requirements are about two to three times that of Crysis's, and about ten to twenty times that of World of Warcraft.

Just because you prefer a gamepad or don't care doesn't mean others sahre your lack of concern.
I think your more then a little bit delusional if you believe that a niche game like this will come any where near the subscriber numbers of a game that was designed for the masses of casual gamers.
