Ive been on these forums for years and i can say in all honesty... ive never seen a positive post about any game, its a known fact that the MMORPG community hates every game.
THe game is in open beta, there is nothing stopping you from making your own decision.
Pretty much my thoughts on these forums as well. Everyone hates all new games. Its comical to say the least.
Forums are always much more negative than reality. You know, it's kinda like the news, reporting what goes wrong all the time.
That's cuz most of the people who really enjoy this game are playing the beta right now. I myslef, am conserving my energy for the launch, cuz right now it really doesn ammount for much. Just gives me an idea what to watch out for, and the general feel for the game.
The UI sucks in my opinion. BUT I've gotten used to it for the most part... but I don't find it effective at all. I hate how people think that just because it's not like WoW that it's great. Sorry but that's the case with the UI.
As for the game itself. I did not have a good first impression when I played as a Tartumage in the Forest starting area. When I restarted I created a Conjourer and started in the Desert area and found it much more enjoyable... so i suggest everyone try a few things out before they make their final decision.
I find it very hard to belive that they will change the ui or controls at this state. Contents maybe yes, quests, xp et cetera. But not the core of the game as it plays.
This.
The game is in open beta, which is pretty much the end product. There are only minor tweaks and bug fixes between now and release. Every beta I've been in has seen no significant change from OB to Release and there is no reason to think this case will be any different.
Every MMO I have ever played has significantly continued to change after release. There is really no such thing as an end product in these kind of games.
I don't care what a game MIGHT become 3 years from now. I care about what I get for my money NOW.
Right now I want to fight mobs and solve some quests. But what I have to do is fight the bad UI instead. And figuring out how to change graphics settings and even quitting the game is a quest in itself.
It's like the developers thought all things where better in the old days 10 years ago. So let's make the game like things where back then. Exceptionally clunky and primitive! Well here is a newsflash for You developers: There is a reason why certain things changed. Specially in the UI department. If You can look past the pretty graphics You have to be an oldschool Cobol programmer or something similar to think this game is modern and streamlined. Fighting my way through another menu instead of fighting the mobs feels like a deliberate waste of time. And personally I prefer my games to be time consuming, not time wasting.
Unless this game changes in a BIG way I'm not paying a dime for it. And on the other hand, if it DOES change in a big way I'm not touching it for a long time either. Because there simply isnt time from now till launch to implement and TEST a whole new UI. Different doesnt always mean better. And right now it definitely isn't!

I had a similar experience, after trying all three starting areas I think I can pretty much say I hate the forest area straight out. Its got by far the longest running distance to get anywhere, and its hunting areas are tunnels and corridors with frustratingly low access from different directions. The desert area on the other hand, city was nice and compact, open area outside the city, much better from my view point.
Once I realized that and got used to the controls, I basically ran headfirst into the real issues that I basically can't play with. "Your character can do everything!" If you can stand all the menus just to switch weapons, and reequip skills, etc... Really? Does this make the game more hardcore? Is testing the player's patience good game design from some school of thought? This kind of stuff makes issues with the mouse seem rediculously insignificant.
I generally enjoy crafting, I don't mind deep crafting systems, in fact I'd love to encourage them. But seriously, moving 1 item at a time into slots, having to keep a seperate notebook or looking online for actual recipes? Soooo my character is learning to be an expert tradesman, but I can't keep an in game record that y'know might speed the most tedious aspects of the process up? Gathering is pretty random and frustrating needing stuff from every profession both gathering and crafting, but that's fine lets make the interface even worse. There are definetely better ways to make a deep crafting system than tedium ad nauseum.
Crafting leves are even better. So I'm going to give you an assignment, but guess what its like a criminal investigation where the contact doesn't want to be found. Really? You think someone who really needs me to do their work would make their prescence known. This is the kind of rediculousness I actually expect to be changed relatively soon, since squenix has taken steps with other guildleves to make the direction and area obvious, but if they don't... good freakin game.
A game always gets a ton of negative threads on these forums (MMORPG.com) when they are close to release, I wouldn't listen to either side to be honest, you just need to try it yourself. The people that like it hype it up and the people that don't over exaggerate how much they don't like it.

Over the years i've been here i only posted a negative post on rare occasion ... if i did, i was simply dissapointed with a game i really tried to like
I tend to assume other people do it for the same reason.
